Aeroplan has further extended their waiving of all change fees on Aeroplan flight rewards through to March 31, 2022. As of April 1st bookings made by March 31 will be able to be changed once with no fee while bookings that are made from April 1st will return to the standard policy based on the fare option purchased. Recently, I had a flight to Toronto and decided to check-out the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge in the Domestic Terminal at Vancouver International Airport. The lounge is located by gates C29 and C30, just a short distance after security in section C. Currently, there is a a Lululemon pop-up shop by the lounge and you might miss it if you don’t keep you eye out for it. It is located to your right as you head down and the entrance is between the rock walls with a glass door.  

New Welcome Bonus of 20,000 points and first year free with National Bank of Canada's top three travel rewards credit cards

 
This week has seen the return of limited time increased welcome bonuses on several cards from National Bank of Canada. The offer provides 20,000 bonus points and no annual fee in the first year when you spend $3,000 in the first three months on either the Platinum, World or World Elite Mastercard. With National Bank's A la carte rewards those 20,000 points are worth up to $200 towards travel and the first year annual fee savings ranges from $89 to $150 depending on which card you get.  On top of this, if you get the World Elite Mastercard you can enjoy a refund of up to $250 per year on seat selection, airport parking and baggage fees.

There are several good gift card redemption promotions right now from CIBC Rewards. Until May 4, 2022 you can redeem 5,000 Aventura points for a $50 Pioneer, Fas Gas, Ultramar or Chevron gift card or you can also redeem 5,000 Aventura points for $50 Save-On-Foods gift card. The Save-On offer is valid until February 1, 2023. Redeeming 5,000 points for $50 gift card works out to 1 cent per point in value and if you earned those points with an accelerate earn rate on one of the CIBC Aventura card it could translate to a 1.5% return. While the value and return is potentially lower than if you redeemed for travel via the Aventura Airline Reward Chart (where you can get up to 2.28 cents per point for up to 3.4% return) it's not a bad deal to consider for these cash equivalents. Air Canada announces a major schedule expansion for the summer including seven new routes and the return of dozens more

 
Air Canada sent out two press releases this morning announcing a significant increase in their flight schedules for this summer. One release covered their North American expansion which also includes seven new routes being added and the other release covered International flights beyond North America. Here are the details of the Air Canada's expansion as travel begins to recover.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club moving from Qmiles to Avios as its loyalty currency

 
News came out today from Qatar Airways that they will be adopting Avios as the new currency for their Privilege Club frequent flyer program. Avios is the currency of the airlines that are part of IAG (British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia, etc.) which Qatar Airways happens to a be a major shareholder so it seems like a natural progression for Qatar Airways to bring on this change.

You can buy British Airways Executive Club Avios for as little as 1.3 cents with a subscription to The Economist

 
There are a few times per year when British Airways Executive Club and The Economist provide a increased bonus for subscribing to the latter. That bonus has returned and awards up to 18,000 Avios for new subscriptions. Unlike some other frequent flyer programs that team up with The Economist, BA's offer is available to Canadians. Why is this noteworthy? It's actually a way to 'buy Avios' cheaper than truly buying Avios through BA! Although you are limited to earning only up to 18,000 Avios with this offer rather than being able to purchase hundreds of thousands of Avios in one go. That being said this is a good way to top off an account for an award, to keep your account active or even for a short haul redemption as we show below.

Not even a week after it came to a close we see the return of Hilton’s bonus for buying points!  Once again you can earn a 100% bonus when you buy points but this time you only have to buy 5,000 instead of 10,000 to earn it. Also the promotion does not see the doubling of the annual cap on buying points which means you can only buy up to 80,000 points.  That 80,000 cap does not include the bonus points so if you max out this offer and buy 80,000 points you’ll receive 160,000 into your account.

World of Hyatt's annual hotel category changes are here - two hotels in Canada will increase in points cost

Hyatt's World of Hyatt program announced their annual hotel category changes today. These are the hotels that will be moving up or down in the eight categories that the program has. It is not a change to the actual categories or points requirements themselves as those stay the same. Overall the program will see 146 hotels changing worldwide, 70 will be moving to a higher category (69 move up one, 1 hotel moves up two categories) while 76 will move down in their categories. Here in Canada we have two of the current 16 hotels falling into those 70 hotels that are moving up.

I received a bit of shock in my email inbox yesterday. BMO actually sent a Diners Club email that wasn't strictly an automated statement or payment reminder! First thing I thought is "What is going on?" I haven't had an email from BMO or Diners Club like this in years! And by years I'm thinking nearly a decade if not more. Are they actually starting to pay some attention to the card and the Club Rewards program now?

TAP Air Portugal has launched a great Valentine's Day sale for travel for their flights out of Toronto. It is available in both Economy and Executive (Business) Class but I'll focus on the latter in this post as that really seems like the good deal! With this sale you can fly round trip business class from Toronto to Portugal from $1,999 all in or travel beyond to other European destinations for $2,499. On top of this, for the Executive/Business Class fares they are offering double status miles in TAP's Miles&Go program.  This means you would earn 10,746 status miles each way if you fly Toronto to Lisbon.

February 8 Update: SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) launching Toronto to Copenhagen & Stockholm flights plus a new Amex Offer for FedEx

Star Alliance airline SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) and partner of Air Canada announced today the launch of flights from Toronto. Starting this June the airline will fly 3x per week from Toronto to Copenhagen and 4x per week from Toronto to Stockholm. The airline will use their Airbus A321LR aircraft on the route which feature 22 lay flat business class seats, 12 premium economy seats and 123 economy class seats. These new routes are great news for Aeroplan members as SAS is part of the Star Alliance which means you will be able to earn and more importantly redeem points for award flights on these routes. Top 5 Small Business Credit Card Sign Up offers for February - These cards provide the best value out of their welcome bonuses

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Small Business Credit Card Sign Up offers for this month! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards for small businesses that have very good acquisition (welcome/sign up) offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the just sign up bonus, but when some of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when you grab them strictly for the sign up rewards. A few weeks ago we let you know how Best Western Rewards had expanded their Pay with Points redemption option to most hotels in North America and now they looking to get it more exposure with a new promotion. You can earn 2,000 Bonus Rewards Points when you make a Pay With Points booking and complete your stay at any Best Western branded hotel in the United States, Canada or the Caribbean. There is a minimum of 5,000 Points is required for a Pay with Points reservation and if you choose to only redeem that amount you'll still get those 2,000 points so it would be like you only redeemed 3,000 points to get a $25 credit towards your hotel bill!
