While we were on vacation last week we missed this important development right here in Alberta. It appears that the Alberta College of Pharmacists has followed British Columbia and Ontario's lead in banning the awarding of loyalty points/miles on prescriptions. This change is due to take effect on May 1st.You may recall from a few months ago we provided lots of coverage of the B.C. issue thanks to our reader Randy out of Victoria and now it is happening right here in the home province of Rewards Canada. The biggest hit that we see is the Safeway/Air Miles partnership as it is a huge draw to using Safeway pharmacies and as such there is a big push from the two (plus Sobey's) to have this decision reversed. There is an online petition which at the time of posting already had over 22,000 Albertans voicing their opinion. I haven't seen any communications from Rexall (Aeroplan), Sobey's (Club Sobey's/Aeroplan),  Shoppers Drug Mart (Optimum) or others yet but at least with Shoppers there is a work around as they award Optimum Points on buying Shoppers Gift Cards which can then be used for the prescription purchase. Perhaps for the time being Safeway should do the same, award Air Miles for Safeway GCs!  I also encourage our readers in Alberta to go and sign the petition at http://iearneditpetition.ca/

Aeroplan has released their next set of Distinction Flights. These are flights that only Aeroplan Distinction members can redeem for. The first batch of flights were in March for destinations in the U.S. and Mexico while this newest set is for flights within Canada. Here are the flight dates and times. The redemption amounts are 25,000 Aeroplan Miles for Economy or 50,000 for Business. Full details can be found here

Air France KLM Flying Blue Promo Awards - Save 25% on award tickets between Toronto/Montreal & Europe for summer travel

The latest set of Air France KLM Flying Blue Promo Awards are out and this time there are two Canadian cities included. The past few Promo Awards have not seen any of our cities included so this is a nice change! The latest set of offers will be bookable as of May 1st and are good for award travel over the summer in July and August!  The offers this time are for 25% off Business Class between Toronto or Montreal and Europe. This could end up being a great deal considering this is for award travel during peak season when other airlines will be typically charging higher amounts of miles if they have the availability.  Don't have the miles? You could always consider transferring Starpoints earned via the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express to Flying Blue.

What are the promo awards? The promo awards are a discount of 25-50% off the regular Flying Blue mileage requirement for select AF KLM flights in select cabins.  Due to increases in the regular award mileage requirements last year the promo awards not as grand as they used to be but overall are they are still considered a great deal when compared to the regular mileage requirements. With the 25% this time the rates are still slight higher than Aeroplan's 90,000 miles for a ClassicFlight Business Class ticket to Europe. To take advantage of this deal you must book your promo award ticket between May 1 and May 31  for travel between July 1 and August 21. More details can be found here.

Some of the U.S. Frequent Flyer blogs are encouraging you to book US Airways Dividend Miles award tickets for travel on British Airways sooner than later as word is getting out that US Airways is not charging the fuel surcharges that they are supposed to be charging for. This is a really good way to save hundreds if not thousands of dollars on travel to London. So if you can now is time to book some BA travel via USDM! If you don't have enough miles you can always buy miles with the up to 100% bonus that starts up again on May 3rd (see below) HT View From the Wing, One Mile at a Time

We had an email this morning from Points.com letting us know that the US Airways promo of up to a 100% bonus when buying miles will return on May 3rd and last until May 25. If you are not a USDM member join now as you usually have to be a member for 12 days before you can buy miles (and then use them for the above offer!)

Hyatt has launched another round of stay bonuses for select Hyatt Gold Passport airline partners. The offer is the same across all the airlines that are participating and that offer is triple miles per stay after your second stay at any Hyatt Hotel Worldwide from May 1st to August 31st. The bonus can be earned on every stay from you second right up to you fifteenth stay.

Transfer points to Aeroplan to earn up to 25,000 Bonus Aeroplan Miles

Aeroplan has once again brought back their partner transfer bonus that we saw in November 2013 April 2013,  November 2012 and so on. Basically what it entails is transferring points out of other select loyalty programs into your Aeroplan account. Just like in November, the offer is once again cumulative across all participating partners and the bonus maxes out at 25,000 miles again. (We haven't seen the 40,000 miles bonus since April of last year so it looks like it may have gone the way of the dodo bird...) and there are no financial partners involved this time as well, for Canadians that is, Americans get Diners Club Club Rewards in that category. Basically you can transfer from partners like Starwood, Hertz and more (see the last graphic) and as long as the total Aeroplan miles deposited from all of them reaches one of the bonus target levels you will be awarded the respective bonus miles.

And just like the last two versions of this offer, American Express Membership Rewards is unfortunately not included. so chances are I will not use the promo this time (again).

If you are a Starwood Preferred Guest collector you can really up the bonus by taking advantage of their 5,000 Mile bonus offer when you convert 20,000 Starpoints into Aeroplan. Which means in this promotion you can get 29,000 Aeroplan Miles for 20,000 Starpoints or if you transfer 20k four times, you'll get 125,000 Aeroplan Miles for 80,000 Starpoints. Of course I like to keep Starpoints for award nights or cash+points stays within the Starwood family but some of you may like this transfer option.

Air Canada is further delaying the launch of their 787 service! According to Airlineroute.net the service between Toronto and Zurich has now been pushed back another week to May 25th while Tel Aviv gets pushed back two weeks to July 15. The single day May 21st YYZ-YUL service remains unchanged. Hopefully those of you who have booked flights just to be on this plane are not affected or you can change your plans to fly on it still! We're still crossing our fingers AC sends one over to YYC in June for the new runway opening celebration!

Hilton HHonors: Double Points or Airline Miles for stays at participating locations Worldwide

It has been 10 days since our last post on the Rewards Canada blog and update on the main Rewards Canada site. Why? We were on vacation. Simple as that. Now that we are back it is time to play catch up on the past week or so of news, bonuses and more! some of the information we'll be bringing to you over the next few days you may already be aware of but as usual there will be some of it that you have not seen yet.

We start it off with Hilton HHonors next systemwide promotion which is nice and simple. Double HHonors points or Double Airline Miles on all your eligible stays at participating Hilton locations Worldwide. We bold 'participating' as once again there is a large list of hotels not participating, approximately ~600 or so, most of which are in the U.S.. Once you pick double points or double miles there is no switching. Starwood Hotels: Earn up to Triple Starpoints with Earn Away Get Away (Valid for stays May 1 - Jul 31)

With a little under two weeks left in earning bonus points from Starwood's Bring on the Nights promotion they have released the details of their spring and summer promotion! Called Earn Away Get Away the offer is open for registration right away (unlike the past few promos where they tease us first) and that registration must be done by June 30 for stays between May 1 and July 31. The offer is for Double Starpoints on all stays at participating locations worldwide but if you include a Sunday night (Saturday night in the Middle East) your points are tripled. This time the promotion does have a list of properties not participating and that list can be found here. These are the Canadian properties that have opted out of the promotion:

Why you should consider crediting your Avis rentals to SAS EuroBonus

A few weeks ago (or was it even last week?) we passed along the news that SAS EuroBonus will now award 1,000 points for any eligible Avis rental that is booked through their page on the Avis World website at avisworld.com/eurobonus

Why is this significant? 1,000 points for a rental may not seem a lot but when you compare it to many other programs it actually is especially when looking a rentals of 1 day or less. Aeroplan only offers 500 miles per Avis rental excluding any bonuses and many U.S. programs offer 50 miles per day excluding bonuses. Some programs award varying levels of points per day so that is why this SAS EuroBonus tactic should really only be looked at for one day rentals.

When looking at our home grown program, Aeroplan, it would take you 50 Avis rentals to get enough Aeroplan miles for an economy class award ticket within North America. With SAS EuroBonus their old earn rate prior to April 1st was also 500 points but now that it has been doubled, you can get enough SAS EuroBonus points for a round trip economy class award ticket in North America with only 25 Avis rentals and this is why you should consider moving your 1 day or less Avis rentals to SAS EuroBonus. Of course bonus offers may change this value proposition but most of the time those bonus offers require rentals of multiple days.

Although we haven't wrote about before here on Rewards Canada, you should do the same for one day or less Hertz or Alamo rentals by crediting those to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club as you'll earn 1,000 miles for any eligible rental with those two companies. This is also valuable as Flying Club miles can be converted to Hilton HHonors points if you never for see redeeming miles via Flying Club for flights.

But what about consolidating all your points into you main account you may ask? While I still tend to preach about focusing on one program a person should also look at how quickly you can be rewarded. If you are planning 25 Avis rentals this year and know you'll be 12,500 miles short of an award with Aeroplan than you should probably credit those to Aeroplan but if you have no award flights planned or just wing it when it comes to that department you are better off crediting to EuroBonus and getting a free round trip award flight vs. a one way award flight.

I'm have to pass along an apology! I didn't follow my own rules that I preach about making sure you read all emails you get from various loyalty programs and not deleting them or ignoring them. Well I did the latter! After seeing this bonus make its way out on several blogs I wondered why I had not received notice on it. Well in fact I did, going through my emails there it was, sent on April 8th! Mind you the subject was a bit ambiguous "Limited Time Spring Offer" but that is no excuse. In the bonus offers section you'll find a discount on buying Starpoints from Starwood Preferred Guest. Even with the highest discount of 25% you are buying Starpoints around 2.6 cents apiece not including GST. Unless you have an award in mind that you need to off your account for (either SPG or to an airline via the SPG transfer) then this discount may not be worthwhile.

Also the bonus offer section are new flight bonuses from British Airways Executive Club that could be of interest to those of you in the Vancouver area. The offers include double Avios on Alaska flights between YVR and SEA plus Double Avios between Seattle and London, the latter is a great offer for those of you who cross the border to save money on flights!

Turkish Airlines will be expanding their codesharing on Air Canada flights to/from Montreal. (Source Airlineroute.net)

Earn 3,500 Aeroplan Miles by simply test driving Volvos!

Volvo became an Aeroplan partner in 2013 and when they did they offered up to 75,000 bonus Aeroplan miles for buying a Volvo plus many other ways to earn miles for service and parts but one was free miles and that was for test driving a Volvo. That original offer is back now and Aeroplan members can earn 250 Aeroplan miles each time they test drive a Volvo. However until the end of the month their is another Volvo offer running that is for 2,500 Aeroplan Miles for test driving a 2015 Volvo V60 Sportswagon.

So how can you earn the 3,500 miles?

First go test drive the V60 Sportswagon before April 30th to get the 2,500 miles from the first Volvo offer then wait 30 days and go test drive another Volvo to get the 250 miles, wait 30 days, test drive again and so on until the end of the second promotion on August 31st. All told you should be able to come away with 3,500 Aeroplan miles simply by test driving Volvos!

The Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles program is being revamped with the new changes taking effect on June 1st. A high level analysis shows the Miles&Smiles program is following suit with Aeroplan (and many programs before that) by now pricing out one way award flight redemptions at 50% of the cost of round trip, mileage earning on discount fares are being slashed (5 of the lowest economy class fares will no longer earn 100% of actual flight mileage but rather anywhere from 25 to 50%), full fare economy tickets will earn 125% miles instead of 100% and there will no longer be separate award charts for flights on Turkish Airlines and for flight on Star Alliance partners. Hilton HHonors announces their 2014 category changes and the Alaska Airlines-Delta war continues

Hilton HHonors released their hotel category changes for 2014 and the changes are very mild when you compare them to their drastic devaluation last year! A total of 14 hotels are moving down in their redemption category (some even drop 2 categories!) while only 25 are moving up by one or two categories. These hotels account for less than 1% of the Hilton portfolio and none of them are in Canada. The changes take place on April 15 but you can see them all on Hilton's site here.

Alaska Airlines will be raising the amount of miles required for Mileage Plan award flights on Delta Airlines. The new amounts take effect on May 6. The majority of redemption options from domestic to international travel are going up. This is just the latest development in the big fight going on for Seattle between these two airlines. Apr 9 Update: Air Canada to add Wi-Fi to entire N. American fleet, Best Western $50 Travel Card after 2 stays, Fairmont Double Miles returns

After a busy day yesterday today is bit quieter with the best news being Air Canada's announcement of adding in-flight Wi Fi

For several years now Air Canada has been 'testing' inflight wifi with Gogo on two of their A319s flying between YYZ/YUL and LAX. Today they announced that inflight Wi-Fi will be expanded to their North American fleet of aircraft and it will be done soon. More than likely a response to WestJet's announcement of providing inflight Wi-Fi, Air Canada saw the need to bring this feature up to full speed sooner than their rival. Here is an excerpt from today' AC press release:

Air Canada presently has two Wi-Fi-equipped Airbus 319 aircraft operating in Canada and the U.S. and, subject to a final agreement with Gogo, plans to begin outfitting its remaining Airbus A319, A320 and A321 and Embraer 190 fleet types, as well as its Air Canada Express CRJ-705 and Embraer 175 aircraft, with Air-To-Ground Wi-Fi connectivity. The installations are to begin in May with the goal of equipping 29 aircraft in 2014 and a targeted completion date of December 2015 for the designated 130 narrow-body aircraft. The system offers peak connection speeds comparable to mobile broadband services available on the ground. Current regulations prohibit the use of cellular phones for voice communication. Pricing will be competitive with other in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity offerings.
