The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card is here - replaces the SPG Amex card with a 60,000 point welcome bonus!

 https://www.rewardscanada.ca/links/amexmarriott.html
PLEASE NOTE: The 60,000 point welcome bonus is no longer available. The current sign up bonus is 50,000 points.

Thanks to news from Marriott we knew this card was coming soon. As of today the Canadian Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card ceases to exist. It is replaced by the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card. Essentially the same card as its predecessor, it has only one change to make note of and it's a good one. The welcome bonus is now 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points up from 50,000 on the SPG card. One of the predictions I made at the start of the year has come true! I was always guessing that the card would be upped to 60K once the Category 8 hotels took effect and here we have it. (And for those asking - I didn't have knowledge of this change until 4:37pm MT yesterday - so yes it was a good prediction!) We also have published confirmation of the 15 elite night credits that we learned about from the letters we received from American Express Canada in 2018.

This 60,000 point bonus is truly the highlight of the card. It will get you one night in an expensive Category 7 hotel all the way to 12 nights in a Category 1 hotel during an off-peak period!

Or you can choose to convert those points to 40 airlines that Marriott partners with. 60,000 points nets you 20,000 airline miles plus they'll throw in 5,000 more when you do convert 60,000 points at a time. Technically speaking this is a 25,000 mile welcome bonus for programs like Aeroplan, British Airways Executive Club, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan and many more!

The main features of the Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card from American Express Canada include:
  • Current welcome bonus provides new Cardmembers the opportunity to earn 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points*
  • Earn 5 Marriott Bonvoy points for every $1 in eligible Card purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy properties; 2 points for every $1 in Card purchases everywhere else*
  • Receive an Annual Free Night Award each year after your anniversary that can be redeemed at participating Marriott Bonvoy properties worldwide, with a redemption value at or under 35,000 points
  • Receive 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year, helping earn the next level of Elite status in the Marriott Bonvoy program sooner
  • Complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status. Plus, the ability to upgrade to Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status when you reach $30,000 in eligible purchases on your Card each year
  • Receive complimentary in-room, premium internet access while staying at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels
We see the same increase to the welcome bonus for the Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card. This card also comes with a 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points welcome bonus and the 15 elite nights credit.

Overall I can say we should all be happy with the refresh on the card as these cards remain as some of the top cards in Canada! For us The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card will continue to be the number four ranked overall card in Canada and will remain in our wallet! What do you think of the newly refreshed cards?

Here are the details of the two new refreshed Marriott Bonvoy Cards from American Express:

Marriott Bonvoy reveals March 5 as the date that Category 8 comes into effect as well as 380+ hotel category changes

Since last August, there has been somewhat of a sweet spot (if you want to call it that) for booking high end hotels in the Marriott Rewards (Bonvoy as of next week) program. When the three loyalty programs under the Marriott banner became one last August they kept all their hotels in the Category 1 to 7 levels and didn't introduce peak season pricing. This meant you only had to spend 60,000 points on the best hotels in the portfolio. They did tell us that sometime in 2019 the new Category 8 would come out and that would have a standard redemption rate of 85,000 points (going up to 100,000 for peak times). That means you've been able to essentially 'save' 25,000 points per night for those hotels that will be moving to category 8 and you still can. That is only until March 4th as on the 5th the Category 8 level will take effect. Out of the chain's 6,500+ hotels only 68 will fall into this new category but they are some of the most sought after such as two locations in French Polynesia, a couple in the Maldives and Paris as well as a lot of the premier Ritz-Carlton hotels.

In today's announcement of the launch date for Category 8, Marriott also revealed other hotels that will be moving up or down in award night categories. The entire list of hotels changing can be found here (PDF) and comprises of over 380 hotels. Of that list only 37 are moving down, the remaining 346 are moving up on March 5. This means you'll want to book your free nights at hotels going up as soon as possible so you don't spend as many points and if you happen to be wanting to redeem for one of the 37 going down you'll want to wait to book.

In Canada we 9 properties affected in these changes and they are all going up in price!

You can find the entire category list of over 6,700 Marriott hotels here.

Marriott New Hotel Openings in Canada for 2019 - 22 hotels in the works

With over 6,500 hotels Marriott Hotels is one of the largest hotel companies in the world and with the recent takeover of Starwood they are one of the biggest in Canada. The chain comprises of a whopping 29 brands ranging from mid-level budget locations to high end luxury resorts.

Marriott is looking to add nearly two dozen more hotels to their Canadian portfolio in 2019.  To the best of our knowledge this is largest growth out of any of the major hotel chains.

These are the hotels and their anticipated opening dates (of course these are subject to change):

Artist rendering of the JW Marriott ICE District
I would say the most anticipated hotels of the bunch are definitely the JW Marriott ICE District Edmonton Hotel and The Westin Calgary Airport, the latter of which literally just opened a few days ago from the time of posting this!

JW Marriott ICE District Suite
The JW Marriott in Edmonton has 356 rooms with an executive level and executive lounge while the Westin Calgary Airport has 247 rooms and includes a club floor with a club lounge. The  JW Marriott ICE District Hotel is a Category 5 hotel in the Marriott Rewards program and the new Westin is only a Category 4 hotel which means you can utilize the new free night anniversary benefit from the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card at both of these locations! Both hotels also sport indoor pools and fitness rooms. The JW also has a spa while the Westin has a large conference centre built in to the hotel which has the largest hotel attached ballroom in Calgary at 16,621 square feet.

Remember to take advantage of all the possible Marriott Rewards/Bonus bonus points offers that are on offer if you plan on staying at any of these new Marriott hotels or any other Marriott hotels for that matter! You can find all the promotions listed on our Marriott Rewards Bonus Points page.

Are you excited about any of the new Marriot hotels opening up this year? Are there any locations or brands you'd like to see in your neck of the woods? Let us know in the comments below.

Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express to become Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card

Marriott revealed today the details of the new name and look for their co-branded credit cards in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, UAE and Japan. On February 13th the Marriott Rewards / Starwood Preferred Guest / Ritz-Carlton Rewards programs will become Marriott Bonvoy.  Sometime later in 2019 the Canadian Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express will become the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card. While the Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express will become the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Business Card.

At this point it appears the only changes are the name and the look of the card here in Canada. There is no word yet on whether the cards will receive any new benefits or increased points offerings that we are seeing on some of the U.S. cards. Hopefully we should know this within a few weeks!

Here is the current offering of the Canadian Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express:

It's confirmed - Marriott Bonvoy is the brand new name of the combined Marriott, SPG, Ritz-Carlton loyalty program

Rumours about this name began swirling around a few weeks ago when the trademark applications were found and now we have official confirmation from Marriott that the combined Marriott, SPG and Ritz-Carlton program will be known as Marriott Bonvoy.
“Marriott Bonvoy marks an evolution in travel because it represents more than a loyalty program,” said Stephanie Linnartz, Global Chief Commercial Officer, Marriott International. “Marriott Bonvoy is a travel program designed to bring to life our extraordinary portfolio of global brands in 129 countries and territories, while also providing endless inspiration for members to keep traveling and pursuing their passions.
The official launch date is February 13 when the logo and branding will be rolled out. That day will also see the end of the SPG as it was know it. The SPG and Ritz-Carlton apps will be retired as all interaction will move to the Marriott Bonvoy app (people who have the current Marriott app need not worry as it will automatically update). Marriott Rewards Moments and SPG Moments will become Marriott Bonvoy Moments, and of note from the press release are these name changes for several elite levels:

  • Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite will replace Platinum Premier Elite for members who surpass 75 nights
  • Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Elite will replace Platinum Premier Elite with Ambassador. This top Elite status tier recognizes members who surpass 100 nights and more than $20,000 in spend annually. These members enjoy the highest level of personalization with a dedicated ambassador to help plan their travel and cater to their needs one-on-one.
We will continue to track Marriott promotions in our bonus offer section but of course will refer to the offers as Marriott Bonvoy Bonus Point opportunities as of February 13

December 20 Update: SPG Amex will have 15 elite night credit added early in 2019, United adding Toronto-San Francisco flights & more!

Earlier this year when the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express underwent some changes due to the complete integration of SPG and Marriott Rewards into one program it was noted in a letter from Amex that the card would soon offer qualifying night credits. When it was first announced it wasn't stated how many nights but at that time we assumed it would probably be 15 just like the extinct Chase Marriott Premier Visa card offered. Well there is now confirmation that the card will offer those 15 nights starting sometime early in the New Year and it will be an annual benefit. (Source Reddit)

United Airlines will be adding new service between Toronto and San Francisco. The flights that start on March 31, 2019 will operate twice daily and offer good connection times to United's Asia and South Pacific flights. Of course their Star Alliance partner Air Canada also serves the route and additions are always good for looking for routes to redeem miles for from Aeroplan, MileagePlus or other Star Alliance programs. Summary of global hotel systemwide bonus points promotions - December Edition

One of the easiest ways to rack up lots of hotel points is to take advantage of the systemwide bonuses that come from many of the big chain programs and also from the lesser known programs. In fact, right now it should be rare for you NOT to earn a bonus. Unless you are staying at a boutique hotel or perhaps an independent hotel most other hotels out there have a bonus. Marriott Rewards Update: Category 8 hotels will go into effect March 2019

Marriott's PR team reached out to us with an update to the combined Marriott / SPG / Ritz-Carlton loyalty program to pass along to the Rewards Canada Community. The big takeaway is the time when the new more expensive Category 8 hotel redemption takes effect. It was assumed it would be January 1, 2019 based on prior communication but we now know that it won't happen until sometime in March 2019. This is great news as it gives you more time to book those future Category 8 hotels at Category 7 prices until at least February 28! This means hotels that will cost 85,000 points per night come March will still be able to be booked for only 60,000 points per night.

Here is the communication we received from Marriott
  • Combine accounts: As a reminder, members are encouraged to combine accounts by December 31 to potentially achieve a higher Elite status this year. While some members might have delayed combining to earn two years toward lifetime this year, please note there is no advantage to maintaining two accounts after 2018 ends. Combine Accounts
  • Update email addresses on separate accounts: If members have the same email address on two separate accounts, and do not wish to combine, they should change the email address on one of the accounts. An email address can only be associated with ONE account by the time we launch the new brand in 2019. We will notify impacted members that this needs to occur, and if they do not either combine accounts or change an email address, we will remove the email address associated with the less active account from the profile. This process will occur on a rolling basis starting January 7. After this occurs, the member will still be able to access the less active account by using their member number and password (not email address.) Please note, this account maintenance has been standard practice for members with multiple Marriott Rewards accounts since 2015 and multiple SPG accounts since 2017. Account balances, Elite night credits and any activity in members’ accounts will remain the same. Update Account >
  • Category 8: Category 8 redemption rates go into effect in March 2019 along with the annual category changes. If members wish to lock in redemption pricing for a current Category 7 hotel moving into Category 8, we encourage them to book now. Explore Redemption Rates
Be sure to follow steps one and two as soon as you can and of course book any potential Category 8 hotels between now and March 2019!!

30% Bonus Aeroplan Miles when you convert hotel loyalty program points until December 3 - Marriott/SPG included this time!

We see the return of yet another Aeroplan conversion bonus! Last seen in August, the hotel only transfer bonus is back and once again it is a 30% bonus. You have the make sure that you transfer enough hotel points to earn 5,000 Aeroplan Miles to get the 30% bonus. You'll have until December 3 to make any transfers and the 5,000 miles can be cumulative from multiple hotel programs - this is a good way to use up some of those orphaned hotel points you may never use if you are a frequent Aeroplan redeemer.  The great news for the winter version of this bonus is the return of Marriott/Starwood/Ritz-Carlton to the mix of partners that count.  Marriott (and its subsidiaries) have the best transfer ratio to airline programs at a rate of 3 Marriott Rewards points to 1 airline mile but they also add in 5,000 more miles when you convert 60,000 points at a time. That means with this promotion 60,000 points transferred to Aeroplan will net you 32,500 miles (20,000 miles at 3:1 + 5,000 miles from Marriott + 30% bonus). The easiest way to earn Marriott points in Canada outside of actual hotel stays is with the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express which at the time of this post is offering 50,000 points as a welcome bonus. Now chances are you won't have the points post in time for this iteration of the Aeroplan transfer bonus but you can start banking on the Spring bonus (and it gives you time to reach 60,000 points so you can get that extra little bonus). This is also a good time to convert points from something like the Cobalt Card to Marriott to Aeroplan!

Most of Aeroplan's hotel partners are participating in the promotion so you can convert from any of the following to add to your final tally.

Offer details
30% Bonus Aeroplan Miles when you convert Hotel loyalty programs points to Aeroplan Miles.  Click here for full details Until Dec 3, 18

Hotel partner loyalty programs eligible for this promotion are: Marriott/Starwood/Ritz-Carlton, IHG Rewards Club, Best Western Rewards, Choice Privileges, Coast Rewards, Radisson Rewards, Hilton Honors, Le Club Accorhotels (Accor hotels), Golden Circle Award (Shangri‑La), Wyndham Rewards.

The total amount of miles received from the conversion of hotel loyalty program points into Aeroplan miles must be greater than or equal to 5,000 Aeroplan Miles in order to be eligible to receive the 30% bonus.

Hotel Review: Aloft San Francisco Airport

This is the final review of the Rewards Canada Maui trip from quite a few months ago. Here are the other reviews from this trip:

As mentioned in the Marriott review we decided against staying at it for our return overnight hotel and decided to try the Aloft SFO. The primary reason for choosing this location was the late 4pm check out thanks to the Mrs.’ Platinum status,  the bed sizes plus the price was pretty good. Yes bed size. So many hotels in SFO have only double beds so it’s nicer to have something bigger when you have teenage kids. The Aloft features two queens in their rooms and the have adjoining rooms so we booked two for close to the price of one two doubles room at the Marriott SFO. That’s a pretty good deal and we were super happy we each got our own bed!

This was our first time trying out the Aloft brand which launched about a decade ago as lower priced vision of W hotels.

The hotel and brand have a Modern, Industrial feel that our teenage kids loved and thought was lots of fun. We got to the hotel pretty late as the Hawaiian Airlines flight from Maui arrives at 10pm into SFO. We took the free hotel shuttle from the international terminal that Hawaiian Airlines uses. We didn’t have to wait too long, perhaps 5 minutes for the bus to come and it had us to the hotel in less than 10 minutes as the Aloft is the first stop for that particular shuttle.

The rooms were pretty good - not a ton of space but good enough for an overnight for a couple. One room for a family of four with kids older than toddlers and it would definitely feel cramped. I’m glad we had the connecting rooms with two queens in each room. Overall the rooms were very clean and comfortable except for one part. One of the four Queen beds had stained sheets and not just one stain. It had a few stains, I’m not sure if it wasn’t changed out or if they were washed and had stains remaining - either way they probably should not have been on the bed.

A call down to the front desk saw new sheets and duvet covers brought up about 15 minutes later.

Once the new sheets were on we were able to enjoy our stay thanks the comfortable beds and pillows. And thanks to a shift in the winds at about midnight the planes the active runway right outside of the hotel moved to another so we weren't bothered with any take off noise overnight.

The bathrooms were clean and perfect for the overnight. No tubs, just large showers with good water pressure. Part of the bathroom was set out for a small closet space that had a curtain covering it along with the safe, coffee/tea station and some shelves that could be utilized.

Breakfast was included thanks to the Platinum status and we all tried the Berry’s Portable Breakfast pot - it was really sweet - too sweet even for our teen's sweet tooth! These pots were part of Marriott's innovation at the Aloft brand that came early in 2018.

Thanks to Mrs. Rewards Canada being an SPG Platinum member we received 4pm check out for both rooms which worked out great seeing that our flight to Calgary wasn’t until 8pm. This allowed us to go explore downtown SFO for most of the day with the primary destination being the Museum of Ice Cream.

We were having an amazing time downtown and realized that it would be tight to get back to the hotel by 4pm with traffic (using an Uber) so we called the hotel to let them know and they were more than happy to extend check out to 5pm! We eventually made it back just after 4:30 and made sure we were out as quick as possible before the 5pm check out time.

Overall I would pick this hotel over the San Francisco Airport Marriott Waterfront even though it does not have a lounge - it has bigger beds and has a better feel to it. Still, in the four different hotels we have stayed at in San Francisco over the years we have yet to find one that has really wowed us! May have to stay at some of the really fancy ones closer to downtown - not the touristy ones near Fisherman's Wharf or the so-so ones near the airport.
