New Free Night Award Chart for the combined Marriott Rewards, Ritz-Carlton Rewards, and SPG program has been released

Not only did we find out the details of the upcoming changes to the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card yesterday, Marriott released the full free night award chart for all of their 6,500 hotels around the world. This chart will come into effect in August and overall I am quite pleased with it.

Here are highlights from the press release:
·         Nearly 70 percent of all participating hotels can be redeemed for the same or fewer points. (52 percent of hotels will move to a lower redemption rate and only 31 percent will go higher.)
·         6,300 hotels can be redeemed for just 35,000 points or lower.
·         Members can save up to 25,000 points per night by redeeming future Category 8 hotels that are priced at Category 7 rates until early 2019.
·         For the first time, SPG’s all-suite hotels such the W Maldives, the St. Regis Bora Bora Resort, or the Phoenician Residences, a Luxury Collection Residence Club in Scottsdale, are now included in the published award chart. These sought-after properties can be redeemed for 5,000 fewer points.

Also, please note a number of our most popular redemption hotels are becoming more affordable:
·         Hotel Talisa in Vail, Le Méridien Barcelona, W Punta de Mita, The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka'anapali, The Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota, and Le Méridien San Francisco will redeem for 10,000 fewer points in the new program.
·         The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, Renaissance Paris Republique Hotel, The St. Regis Princeville Resort, Courtyard New York Manhattan/Midtown East, Autograph Collection’s Hotel Punta Islita, and Las Alcobas, a Luxury Collection Hotel in Napa Valley will redeem for 5,000 fewer points in the new program.

Let's start with the good news that nearly 70% of hotels remaining at the same or lower point level and of their 6,500 hotels, 6,300 of them are available at 35,000 points or less. This is great news but it also leaves the door open for adjustments (typically negative) in the near future once the program irons out everything and they go back to its annual hotel category adjustments. Still right now this is encouraging news.

For their Canadian portfolio, 67 hotels are going up in price and some by quite a bit:
  • Le Westin Resort & Spa, Tremblant, Quebec goes up 14,000 points to 50,000 points per night
  • Sheraton on the Falls Hotel goes up 20,000 points 50,000 point per night
  • The Westin Grand, Vancouver goes up 14,000 points to 50,000 points per night
On the other hand 134 Canadian properties are going down in points required. Some of the notable drops:
  • Four Points by Sheraton Hotel & Suites Calgary West drops 12,500 points to 17,500 per night
  • W Montréal drops 10,000 points to 50,000 per night
  • Element Vancouver Metrotown drops 12,000 points to 25,000 points per night
Secondly, as we have mentioned in past posts when the new free night award amounts were revealed in April that the new highest Category 8 isn't launching until early in 2019 which means those hotels can be had at some excellent rates until then. For example the St. Regis Bora Bora is only 60,000 points per night (20,000 Starpoints) which seems like an amazing deal but you have to remember these rates are for standard rooms only which means you may not get that overwater bungalow for this amazing rate.

We also know that until that 'sometime early in 2019' the peak and off peak pricing won't be in effect which means for the remainder of this year all hotels will price at the standard rate:
In the news release yesterday Marriott also confirmed they are continuing with their Pointsavers option that discounts the above rates by 20%. Pointsavers properties change every week and is a good option for those who are really flexible with their schedules. Here are the Pointsavers rates
Cash+Points redemption options will continue and here are the rates:

You can check out the new Award Chart here which Marriott has made very user friendly where you can search by country, city, region, hotel name and so on.

Here are our tips that we also recommend following when there are point redemption changes like this! If you have been planning to redeem for stay soon check out the new chart, if the hotel you want is going to go up in price you'll want to book it before August. If it is going down in price and you can wait to book then wait and do so after the new rates take effect so you can pay less points. If you already have a booking don't cancel it yet. Wait until the new rates kick in and then see if there is availability left, if so you can then cancel your old booking and make a new one at the lower rates.

Overall this is good news from Marriott and once again we have to commend them for keeping this program quite strong as well as for the great communication they have had with the integration of the programs ever since they announced they were buying Starwood.

What are all you thoughts on the new award charts?

Here are other posts that you may want to read in regards to the integration of the programs

New earn rates and benefits revealed for the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express

For sometime now we've known what the earn rates and benefits will be on current and new U.S. issued Marriott and Starwood credit cards from Chase and American Express respectively. Here in Canada we have not, we have only been able to speculate on what changes will happen to the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express. The time has come and now we know what is happening to the card when the three loyalty programs that are owned by Marriott become one this August.

As speculated the earn rate on everyday purchases, that is earning on non-Marriott/Starwood hotel purchases is matching that of the U.S.. This earn rate is 2 points per dollar spent. This is a devaluation from the current earn rate of 1 Starpoint per dollar spent which is equivalent to 3 Marriott Rewards points. So you'll see a 33% reduction in earn for most spending made on this card. For Marriott and Starwood purchases, the new earn rate will be 5 points per dollar - again another devaluation from the current promotional rate of 2 Starpoitns per dollar or 6 Marriott Rewards points. You may be asking why didn't they match the cards in the U.S. on the hotel stay earn rate and I can only speculate that it has to do with the fact that the majority of their hotels are not in Canada and they are taking into account exchange rates. Think about it, a US$100 hotel stay will earn 600 points with a U.S. card but at 5 points per dollar with the Canadian card you'll earn roughly 650 points (US$100 = ~ C$130 x 5 points = 650 points) So the Canadian card will in fact earn more per Marriott/Starwood stay than it's U.S. counterpart. No matter what though it is a still slight devaluation from the promotional earn rate we've become accustomed to.

Now, it's not only the earn rates that are changing on the card, some of the benefits are changing as well and are actually better now and should help offset some of the decrease in points earning. The best news is the change to the free night award benefit. Currently when you spend $40,000 or more on the card annually you get a Category 1-4 free weekend night certificate and that spend requirement will be gone. Every cardholder will now get an annual free night redeemable any night of the week at eligible SPG and Marriott properties with a redemption value of up to 35,000 points (Category 1-5 in the new combined program) This free night will be awarded automatically each year after your anniversary date. This is actually better than the free night award that came on the Chase Marriott Premier Visa card, that one only gave you the equivalent of hotels up to 25,000 points!

The other benefit that sees a change is the elite status benefit. The current SPG card awarded Gold Status when hit $30,000 of spending on the card annually and while that remains ryou'll receive automatic Silver elite status in the new program just by being a cardholder. So if you were one who never hit $30,000 at least you now get some recognition!

You can see now that the card is taking some of the benefits from the discontinued Chase Marriott Premier Visa Card (the Cat 1-5 certificate and automatic Silver status) without eroding the current SPG card too much. If you were used to the Chase card you are getting a better earn rate and insurance package and still get two of its three major benefits. The only one missing is the no foreign transaction fee. That's pretty good a deal. If you've had the SPG card now for sometime it may be hard to get used to the new earn rates but hopefully the new benefits will help make up for that. I think American Express has done a good job in recreating this card for the new program, I knew based on the U.S. cards that there was no way we'd get a 3 point earn rate for everyday spending but I was a little surprised that the hotel earn rate is only 5 points per dollar spent. I thought even with exchange rates and such they would have gone with 6 points like the U.S. card and the fact that its equivalent to the current 2 Starpoint rate they have already been providing.

My wife carries this card and once I learned about the new earn rates and benefits I know we'll keep it in our family portfolio as the Free Night Award is worth more than the annual fee itself.

If you hold the Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express the card has the same benefits as above but has one more somewhat better earn option. It will earn 3 points for every dollar in Card purchases on eligible gas, dining and travel. If you make a lot of purchases in those three categories it may be worth it the get the business card over the consumer card.

One last thing we don't know yet is if the sign up bonus on the Starwood cards will change come August. They are going to be in the U.S. so one can hope the same will happen here.

Earn 1,000 Bonus Le Club AccorHotels Points for stays at Fairmont, Raffles and Swissôtel hotels

Accor Hotels is celebrating the addition of Fairmont, Raffles and Swissotel hotel to their Le Club AccorHotels program with this new bonus! Officially the three hotels from the FRHI group join Le Club AccorHotels on July 2nd and that's when this bonus kicks in. It will also mark the end of the much beloved Fairmont President's Club. As long the hotel is participating and you've registered for this offer you'll earn the bonus.

If you are unfamiliar with the workings of Le Club AccorHotels, you earn points on your stays like most hotel programs and then you can redeem those points at rate of 2,000 points for EUR40 off your hotel bill. That means this 1,000 point bonus is worth EUR20 or about C$30. That's not a bad bonus at all! Granted most Fairmont Hotels aren't the cheapest to stay at over the summer months, I'm thinking Banff and Lake Louise where you're lucky if you can get a rate under $300. You will also have to factor in the base earn rate which is awarded as follow:
Classic members earn 25 points per €10
Silver members earn 31 points per €10
Gold members earn 37 points per €10
Platinum members earn 44 points per €10
The 1,000 point bonus is equivalent to 500 Aeroplan miles as Le Club AccorHotels points can be converted to Aeroplan (4,000 points = 2,000 miles) so that is also an option you can take advantage of.

I would recommend reading this post to learn more about the amalgamation of the programs:
It's Official - Fairmont President's Club will end on July 2, 2018, to be integrated into Le Club AccorHotels

Earn 1,000 Bonus Le Club AccorHotels for stays at Fairmont, Raffles and Swissôtel hotels Worldwide. Full details, online registration & booking. (Registration is required) Book between Jul 2 - Aug 19 for stays Jul 2 - Sep 30, 18

mbna Alaska Airlines World Elite Mastercard gets an increased sign up bonus of 30,000 Mileage Plan miles

Wow this bonus was a little unexpected but we're grateful for it nonetheless! This very good credit card just got a nice boost. The mbna Alaska Airlines World Elite Mastercard now comes with a limited time sign up bonus offer of 30,000 Mileage Plan miles! That's enough miles for up to three round trip flights from Alberta or B.C. to Seattle and other close destinations. In fact there are so many options with Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan that we have said it many times here on Rewards Canada hat it is one of the best frequent flyer programs out there. The good thing with Mileage Plan is that you don't have to fly Alaska which means you don't have live near one of the cities they serve in B.C. and Alberta. You can use Mileage Plan miles on American Airlines, British Airways, Delta, Emirates and the list goes on and on. It provides many options with really good value and outside of earning on flights the best way to earn Mileage Plan miles in Canada is with this card. And for those who want to play the game, this card can be churned. You can get it, make your spend to get the bonus, cancel the card and in as little as three months after cancelling it you can apply for it again. Please note that this card is not available to residents of Quebec.

They have also added one more benefit to the card - you now get one complimentary checked bag per person flying on the same reservation for up to six people!

June 26 Update: What happens to Marriott Free Night Certificates come August, lower sign up bonus on no fee SimplyCash and Amex Business Gold Rewards no longer 1st year free

As of today the sign up bonus for the no fee SimplyCash Card from American Express has been lowered. The new rate is 2.5% on purchases in the first three months (up to $150). This is down from 5% with a maximum of $250 cash back however you are not limited to grocery, gas or restaurants to get this sign up bonus - it 2.5% back on all purchases up to that $150 level.

That's not the only change from American Express today, the American Express Business Gold Rewards Card is no longer first year free. The $250 annual fee must now be paid in the first year of having the card. Going to have to update our Travel Hacking 101 post now and we just did so last week. The card issuers are really clamping down on the gaming of the cards!

Rewards Canada reader Thomas M asked a very good question on what happens with Marriott Free Night Certificates in the new combined program:
I have multiple certificates currently (Chase Canada Visa and Fall Megabonus) that will expire in the fall/next spring. They both state they are valid to be used on category 1-5.

Do you know:

a) will you be able to use the above mentioned certificates on a new category 5 hotel once the new categories are realeased this summer(combined SPG/marriott)? I know those will now cost 35,000 points, but they technically will be categorized category 5, which the certificates also state.

b) can you book a category 7 hotel (35,000 points) and then apply the certificate to a reservation once the hotel changes are announced? This is with the assumption that a hotel stays in the same points category (requiring 35k points before (cat 7) and after(cat 5))
And this is the answer from Marriott:
Certificates attached now for a stay after launch date will convert as well but still be honored at the hotel for redemption regardless of any possible points required change for that specific location.  This is the same approach as our annual category changes. If the reservation is canceled or modified after launch date then the free certificate sits as up to 25k regardless of what it used to be attached to.
Short answer that is safe to say is all free night certificates issued to date will be honoured at the points thresholds issued.
So if I read this correctly the old Category 1-5 certificates will be good at hotels that are up to 25,000 points (the old Cat 1-5) not the new Cat 1-5 of up to 35,000 points. However if you book a hotel now that is Category 1-5 it will be honored even if it ends up above the 25,000 point level in the new program

June 22 Update: Norwegian Airlines outlines first Canadian flights from Hamilton & Montreal, a great Iberia Plus promotion and more

We now know what routes Norwegian Airlines will initially fly from Canada when the Ultra Low Cost Carrier launches them later this year. They will launch seasonal service from Montreal to the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique in late October and serivce across the pond in March 2019 when they start flying their 737 MAX aircraft between Hamilton and Dublin. Unlike most other ULCC's Norwegian does actually have a frequent flyer program called Norwegian Rewards and the currency is called CashPoints. You can 2 to 12% CashPoints on Norwegian flights plus more on hotel bookings and car rentals. Learn more about Norwegian Reward here. As is always the case when a new airline launches in Canada that has an FFP we'll add them to our bonus offer listing page and provide upgraded news coverage of the program and the airline. Norwegian Reward isn't known for offering lots of bonuses but have had the occasional flight offer over the past few years. Find out more

This may interest some of you if you have travels within Europe or maybe from the U.S. to Europe,  or even want to buy 10 cheap tickets and not fly them, Spanish carrier Iberia is offering a sweet 9,000 Bonus Avios per flight if you book those flights this weekend. They say you have to use to Avios by December 1st so only go nuts for buying Iberia tickets if you know you can use those Avios by then and you quite possibly can as they can be redeemed for flights on oneworld airlines, hotels and so on. We also know that you will get the bonus even if you don't take the flights (just don't cancel them) and they are reports of flights around 33EUR (330EUR total for 90,000 Avios, which is a good deal)  Find out more here.  Thinking of going for it? Iberia is actually one of our travel partners and booking these flights via our link with them helps support Rewards Canada/FFB!
