Great Marriott Bonvoy PointSavers rates for stays at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Guelph

The Fairfield Inn and Suites in Guelph Ontario is promoting the fact they have Marriott Bonvoy PointSavers availability until September 2nd. PointsSavers are discounted award nights in the Bonvoy program that provide some decent point savings when redeeming points for those free nights. You can save even more if those PointSavers happen to fall on nights where the hotel is offering Off Peak awards. So we decided to check out this offer for this hotel in Southwestern Ontario.

July 29 Update: Aeroplan extends generous refund & rebooking policy + Air Canada adds more flights out of Quebec City

Air Canada Aeroplan has updated their refund and rebooking policy by extending it to August 31:

Aeroplan flight rewards booked through August 31, 2021 can be changed or cancelled free of charge, at any time. Members can cancel free of charge and receive all of their points back in their account, plus a full refund of any associated taxes, fees and charges on the unused value of travel. For changes, members will pay only the difference in points, or receive a partial refund if their new itinerary requires fewer points. In addition, a difference in taxes, fees and charges may apply when changing an itinerary.

Back on July 20th we had a post that detailed tourism board offers that provide gift cards and/or discounts for stays at select hotels within those tourism board regions. From Vancouver to Quebec City and several cities in-between you can receive $75 visa gift cards, $100 visa gift cards and discounts for dining just to name a few. What is good about some of these offers allow you to actually book the stay via the actual hotel chain so you may earn points, receive your elite status benefits and more. It appears Ottawa, Richmond & Vancouver are the cities where you cannot book direct with the hotel chain.

This news was expected for August but it appears that it has come early and that is the ability to redeem Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles for flights on Qatar Airways. Although both airlines are part of the oneworld Alliance this partnership was done separately from Alaska Airlines adding in all the oneworld partners so you won't see some of the other oneworld airlines as part of the Mileage Plan redemption pool just yet.

This past Sunday, Lufthansa's newest leisure airline Eurowings Discover took to the skies with a flight from Frankfurt to Zanzibar. Being part of the Lufthansa group means this airline is perfect to add as a partner and Aeroplan did just that. As of today Eurowings Discover became the next airline partner of the Aeroplan program and they become a full fledged partner meaning that you can earn and redeem Aeroplan points for flights with them.

It seems like not a days goes by without American Express adding more great deals to their Amex Offers. This one that came out today is another great travel related offer that provides a $70 statement credit if you spend $350 at Fairmont or Sofitel Hotels in Canada. In our household we received this offer on both our The Platinum Card and Cobalt Card.

Marriott Gold and higher members can earn 3,500 bonus points per night for stays at any of three Toronto Airport Marriott Hotels

A few weeks ago we brought you an offer for stays at three Marriott Hotels in the Toronto Airport area. That offer is for 2,500 bonus Bonvoy points but it turns out that is for basic and Silver elite Bonvoy members. If you happen to Bonvoy Gold or higher elite status with Marriott then you can actually take advantage of the offer in this post that provides 3,500 bonus points per night for up to two nights at the same three hotels.

RBC has launched a new initiative for the summer that they have entitled Time for More. This initiative allows eligible RBC credit and debit cardholders to earn additional savings and rewards on gift cards, food delivery, points redemption and more.

A really good new Amex Offers deal came out today so be sure to check your Amex card or cards for it. In our household we only received it on The Platinum Card but I did see on Red Flag Deals that some are reporting having received it on their Cobalt Card as well. Harry B. also let us know he received it on his Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card.

On Tuesday we published an article looking at the various tourism board stay offers across Canada and thanks to Rewards Canada reader Harry B. we have one more to pass along to you. Since the inception of frequent flyer programs in the early 80s there have been very few mileage and points stories that garner the attention of the world. Whether it is The Pudding Guy who has been enshrined in Adam Sandler's Punch-Drunk Love or George Clooney playing Ryan Bingham in Up in the Air who is trying to break the 10 million mile mark in the American AAdvantage program, the mainstream coverage of making the most of frequent flyer programs is pretty minimal. It seems like we get some story every few years (like The Great Canadian Mileage Run by the now fallen from grace Marc Tacchi) but one story other than the pudding guy that always seems to re-emerge is the Baht run. Made famous by Steve Belkin the Baht Run and many of his other mileage travel hacking records are often referred to as to crown jewels in finding that elusive loop hole to earning a ton of miles. Well rather than have other people write about him Steve has put pen to paper and wrote a book about all his amazing mileage earning journeys over the past few decades.

Offer extended: 35,000 RBC Rewards point welcome bonus on their Avion cards

The awesome welcome offers for RBCs Avion suite of cards are being extended! RBC let us know today that the 35,000 RBC Rewards points bonus on their flagship card the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card as well as the RBC Avion Visa Platinum Card and the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege will now be available until November 15th. This is nice extension from the original set expiry date of July 26. The thing that is most awesome about these welcome bonuses is that they are awarded on approval - no minimum spend, no spend this much each month over this many months. You simply have to be approved for the card and the bonus is yours. Yes you do have to pay the annual fee of $120 ($399 for Infinite Privilege) but it is more than worth it in terms of the value of the bonus (minimum $350 in value) and you get the points at the end of your first billing period. No waiting 3 months, 6 months or longer.

Hyatt has come out with their next buy points deal for this summer. When you buy 5,000 or more points in one transaction they will give a 25% discount on the price. This is different than the typical 30 to 40% bonus we have become accustomed to with Hyatt. With the discount the price works out to 1.8 cents (US) per points. This is slightly higher than the 1.714 cents per point (US$) when it is a 40% bonus. Still this is a pretty good price to buy points especially if need some right away. Depending on how you redeem them it could be worthwhile to purchase them for rewards at high end hotels like Park Hyatt’s around the globe or even buying less if you just need a few thousand points to top off for an award. You can buy up to 55,000 points per calendar year so if you take advantage of this now at the full amount of points you won’t be able to buy any later on this year.

July 21 Update: Canalta Rewards adds elite tiers with more benefits, JetBlue TrueBlue added to Rewards Canada & 2,500 free Qatar Airways Qmiles

Western Canada's Canalta Hotels has made changes to their Canalta Rewards program. You may have received an email from them stating this:

Some of you may be aware already that we are making a few changes to our rewards program. Your points will remain the same, and you will still earn points the same way.

We are moving our program to a new platform, so please bare with us while we work out some of the kinks during the move.

With news that Ireland reopened to vaccinated Canadians with no quarantine or testing requirements as of July 19 (Source Canadian Travel News) I thought it would be the perfect time to bring one of the easiest, most achievable transatlantic economy class redemptions back to the forefront. We discussed this redemption quite a few years ago and frequently bring attention to it but figured it would be best to update it for 2021.

That redemption option is using British Airways Executive Club to redeem for flights on Aer Lingus between Toronto and Dublin. Back in 2017 the redemption option (well any redemption on Aer Lingus) became part of BA Executive Club's off peak award pricing. With off-peak In the off season, which is actually the majority of the year, you can fly round trip on Aer Lingus' Toronto-Dublin flight for only 26,000 Avios (13,000 one way) which is a steal in the points and miles world!

Hilton’s bonus for buying points is back after a 13 day hiatus! You can earn a 100% bonus for buying Hilton Honors points until July 29, 2021. Unlike last time where you could buy double the annual limit of points this time you can only buy up to 80,000 points which is the typical maximum amount you can buy annually. That 80,000 cap does not included the bonus points so if you max out this offer and buy 80,000 points you’ll receive 160,000 into your account. Also this time Hilton has limited the points purchases to 20,000, 40,000 or 80,000 with no in-between. Those three packages will also be limited to a maximum of 280 million points sold for this promotion so if that is reached sooner than July 29 the bonus points offer will end.

American Express Front of the Line is gearing up for a return to live events!

American Express has recently been sending out numerous emails letting cardmembers know that American Express Experiences and Front of the Line are set to return for live events. If you you are a first time Amex cardmember who just got their card during the pandemic when FOTL wasn't running or are unfamiliar with FOTL it essentially allows American Express Cardmembers to enjoy exclusive access to ticket presales and reserved seating offers for concerts, musicals, shows and much more. During the pandemic FOTL switched to offering and still do offer access to virtual events but come this fall that all changes as live events are set to return.

BMO's mainstay premium small business card, the BMO Rewards® Business Mastercard® sees the return of it's 50,000 point welcome bonus which ran for the latter half of 2020 all the way into February of this year. The 50,000 bonus points are awarded when you spend $5,000 or more on the card in the first three months of having it. On top of that the annual fee of $120 is waived for the first year of having the card. That means you basically get those 50,000 points at no cost outside of the spending that you actually put on the card.

Regional and city tourism boards are always looking at ways of attracting visitors to their part of the country by offering various incentives and promotions. One such incentive has been to provide some sort of promotion like providing gift cards for booking and staying at hotels in that said region or city. This type of promotion has seen increased popularity in Canada ever since one of early trendsetters started it off many years ago. That trendsetter was Tourism Vancouver and Vancouver Hotel Destination Association who launched BeVancouver as early as 2015. Now known as StayVancouverHotels we see them run their gift card offers for stays in the Vancouver region several times per year and it is back for this summer. Vancouver is not the only region however running promotions right now. In fact at the time of posting we here at Rewards Canada were aware of five offers across Canada and are sure there are even more.

July 19 Update: World of Hyatt adds 20 more Small Luxury Hotels of the World locations, earn 5x points on some fancy cookies in YYC & two new Amex Offers

Hyatt''s World of Hyatt program added 20 more Small Luxury Hotels locations to the program last week. The 20 locations are spread out around the world and actually range in award night categories from 3 to 8 so some of these luxurious locations won't actually cost an arm and leg in terms of points! Canada's travel and tourism industry can hopefully breathe a sigh of relief as the Canadian Government today announced an easing of the border restrictions that have been in place since March 2020. Barring any changes to the current COVID-19 situation in Canada our borders will open up on August 9 for fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and on September 7 for the rest of the world.

Whether you are a frequent flyer, a points & miles junkie or just someone who wants to have the utmost in flexibility with your travel rewards then there is one type of credit card that is the best for most of you and in reality for most Canadians. That type of card is the Hybrid Card. Hybrid cards are the moniker for these cards that Rewards Canada instituted many moons ago. Also known as Flexible Points card, Hybrid cards give the cardholder the best of all worlds when it comes to being rewarded from their credit card spending and welcome bonuses.

The next airline to bring out a bonus for buying their miles/points today is Alaska Airlines. The Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan buy miles bonus is back and once again we see it up at the 60% level which does seem to be new normal for the airline. The bonus is tiered in that if you buy 3,000 to 39,000 miles you’ll get a 40% bonus and the 60% kicks in at the 40,000 mile level.

Aeroplan has brought back a buy points bonus for the next week and a half or so. This tiered offer sees bonuses ranging from 50% to 80% dependent on how many points you buy. This offer runs until July 30 and allows members to buy up to 350,000 points per transaction up to a new annual limit of 1 million points. If you buy 3,000 to 24,000 points you'll earn a 50% bonus, 25,000 to 55,000 points will earn a 65% bonus and 60,000+ will earn the 80%.

All I can say is wow! Here is a bonus offer that may be a once in a lifetime offer. Much like last week's update on new Marriott Hotels in Canada we have a mid-year update on new Hyatt Hotels in Canada. We now know the Park Hyatt Toronto will not remain a Category 4 hotel like they were before they closed for renovations. Unfortunately it is now confirmed to be a Category 6 hotel - that's a big jump from the previous 15,000 points required to now needing 25,000 points per night for a free night award! The hotel also now has a set date for opening and that is September 15.

Thanks to some huge new bonus offers from American Express and Scotiabank plus some ongoing big time offers from TD, CIBC, and RBC for their airline co-brand cards we are now seeing a plethora of cards that bring big value from their welcome bonuses. If I can recall correctly in our 20 years of writing about credit cards and loyalty programs in Canada we have never seen this welcome bonus offers that are valued at $300 or more. Typically we may have 6 to 8 cards in that range but right now we have 15 cards whose true value of their welcome offers are $300 or higher.

Time for another bonus for your online shopping! This time we AIR MILES shops provide extra miles when you shop online at multiple retailers. The bonuses are awarded as follows:

I think this might be the biggest bonus yet that we've seen for Rexall's Beauty Thursday. You can earn 100,000 Be Well points if you spend $100 or more on beauty products on July 15. Those points are worth $40. Check the app to add this bonus to your account!

Here is your monthly update of all the global hotel bonus points promotions that are available. One of the easiest ways to rack up lots of hotel points is to take advantage of these systemwide bonuses that come from many of the big chain programs and also from the lesser known programs. In fact, right now it should be rare for you NOT to earn a bonus. Unless you are staying at a boutique hotel or perhaps an independent hotel most other hotels out there have a bonus. So take advantage of it! These systemwide bonuses simply require you to register beforehand and they do not affect hotel pricing as long as you book a point eligible rate which are most rates out there. Of course booking through a third party site like Expedia or Rocketmiles does not count as most chains only award points on bookings that are made directly with them. Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Small Business Credit Card Sign Up offers for this month! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards for small businesses that have very good acquisition (welcome/sign up) offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the just sign up bonus, but when some of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when you grab them strictly for the sign up rewards. This month we see four first year free cards on the list! And remember this list is based on minimum value towards travel which we calculate as the minimum value of the welcome bonus less the annual fee. July 13 Update: American Express Gold Rewards Card is NOT being discontinued, confirmation of HSBC to BA transfer bonus & an Etihad bonus for travel between Toronto & Dubai

A correction for our Daily Update post from yesterday - American Express has reached out to us to let us know the American Express Gold Rewards Card IS NOT being discontinued. We'll provide more details as soon as we can about this news. You will notice however that it will be removed from the Rewards Canada site later this week but it will return in the near future!

We know that American Express will be updating the Cobalt Card as of August 16, 2021. On that date the card will get an increased earn rate of 3x points for select streaming services like Netflix and Spotify. It will also get Mobile Device insurance added to insurance suite of benefits. The biggest change however will be the ability to convert points earned on the Cobalt Card directly to American Express' airline partners. This is big news for many points and miles enthusiasts as this means 1 to 1 redemption to Air Canada Aeroplan and British Airways Executive Club. And then a redemption rate of 1 to .75 points for the other airline partners.

World of Hyatt and American AAdvantage have had a long standing partnership that goes beyond your standard hotel-airline earning partnership seen with most programs and today they launched additional opportunities for elite members in both programs to fast track to elite status in the reciprocal program.

Receive a best ever 40% bonus when you transfer HSBC Rewards points to British Airways Executive Club

For this month HSBC has brought back their transfer bonus to British Airways Executive Club and it is the best ever that we've seen at 40%! The last few iterations of the bonus have seen it at 35% so now if you choose to transfer you'll score an extra 5%. And seeing that most of you who jumped on the amazing 100,000 bonus points (or 130,000 if you are in Quebec) from the HSBC World Elite Mastercard in Fall of 2020 should have your points in your account you may want to seriously take this transfer bonus into account.

July 12 Update: The end of an era - Amex to discontinue the Gold Rewards Card and earn up to 8,000 bonus points at Sonesta Hotels in Toronto

GREAT NEWS! American Express has reached out to us to let us know the Gold Rewards Card IS NOT being discontinued. We'll provide more details as soon as we can about this news.

We have received word that the American Express Gold Rewards Card will be coming to an end. The iconic card that really seemed to get things restarted for American Express over a decade ago and was crowned the best card in Canada for many years will no longer be available for new applicants. It does appear it will be grandfathered for those who choose to keep it - an Amex customer service rep said my card isn't going anywhere so I can only assume that means it will be grandfathered.

Thanks to one of our regular contributors of breaking news: @joshnet on Twitter, we have be alerted to what appears to be a new or revamped RBC Avion credit card being released soon. Josh directed us to a post on Red Flag Deals that provides some details of this card that will be in the suite of RBC Avion cards. Price and benefits wise this card falls in between the premium veteran RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card and the Ultra Premium RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege card. Part of me actually thinks this is the anticipated revamping of the current RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card.

Starting today there is a new exciting offer for premium Aeroplan cardholders to earn Aeroplan Elite Status without even setting foot on a plane! New and existing cardholders will be able to earn Aeroplan Elite Status or increase their current Elite Status level by simply spending on their eligible credit cards.

The offer is broken into two parts - one for existing cardholders (those who have the card on or before July 11, 2021) and the one for new cardholders who apply for and receive an eligible card between today and October 1, 2021. Existing cardholders have to register for the offer while new cardholders do not.

July 8 Update: Flair Airlines announces flights to six U.S. cities, update on new Marriott Hotels in Canada & Neo Financial now has a page on Rewards Canada

Flair Airlines announced that starting this October the airline will fly between 8 Canadian cities and 6 U.S destinations: Fort Lauderdale, Orlando-Sanford, Phoenix-Mesa, Hollywood-Burbank, Palm Springs and Las Vegas (Source Flair Airlines)

Halifax, Montreal, Kitchener-Waterloo, Toronto, Vancouver,Calgary, Ottawa and Abbotsford will receive service to a variety of the U.S cities tarting this October.The ultra-low fares will start between $79 to $109CAD one-way

Earn 2,500 bonus points per night for stays at any of three Toronto Airport Marriott Hotels

Here's another Marriott Bonvoy stay bonus we came across for stays here in Canada. This one covers three hotels around the airport in Toronto. You can earn 2,500 bonus points per night for up to two nights at the Element Toronto Airport, Four Points by Sheraton Toronto Airport or The Westin Toronto Airport. This offer is good for stays until September 11, 2021.

Earlier this year launched Aeroplan launched their partnership with Starbucks Canada where you can link your Aeroplan account to your Starbucks Rewards account. Once your account is linked you can double dip and earn rewards from both programs. There are base earn rates with Aeroplan when you load your Starbucks card (75 points for $50-$74.99, 150 points for $75+) and then they have run bonuses on top of that which brings us to this new bonus offer.
