Aeroplan Availability Alert: Canada to Bangkok in economy class from 45,000 points each way

Air Canada has revealed a promotion that is guaranteeing a certain amount of reward seats on their new flight to Bangkok, Thailand. This promotion is available for bookings until September 6 for travel January 9 to April 17, 2023.

Buy or gift Aeroplan Points with an 85% bonus

 
Aeroplan has come out with another buy or gift points promotion where you can earn an 85% bonus. . This offer runs until September 3, 2022 and allows members to buy up to 500,000 points per transaction up to the annual limit of 1 million points. If you buy 15,000 or more points you will earn the 85% bonus. Compared to the last buy points offer this is better as the lower tiers had lower bonuses but that's not the case this time!

Credit Card Review: TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card

One of the most popular travel rewards credit cards in Canada, the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card was first reviewed by Rewards Canada in 2014 when it was introduced. For the better part of six years the card didn't change very much but then we saw the entire Air Canada Aeroplan saga transpire for numerous years which culminated in Air Canada buying Aeroplan back from Aimia and launching a whole new Aeroplan in November of 2020 along with refreshed credit card offerings. Award Availability Alert: Canada to Europe round trip economy class for 30,000 to 40,000 Flying Blue miles (even for summer 2023!)

Right now you can book reward tickets between Canada and Europe with Air France KLM's Flying Blue for as little as 30,000 miles round trip! As first pointed out south of the border by TPG and later by Frequent Miler there is tons of availability between the US and Europe at 15,000 miles each way so we decided to check if the same holds true for Canadian departures. And it does. You can fly to many cities in Europe in Economy Class from Montreal, Quebec City or Toronto for only 15,000 Flying Blue Miles one way or 30,000 round trip. Calgary, Edmonton or Vancouver departures see these flights at 20,000 Flying Blue Miles one way or 40,000 round trip.

Credit Card Review: HSBC World Elite Mastercard

 

The HSBC World Elite Mastercard is a relatively new card in the Canadian market. This is not their 'Premier World Elite' which is meant for people who bank at HSBC but rather this card is for any Canadian and it is essentially the same as the Premier version. When HSBC launched this card in late 2018 it became obvious they didn't want to only market their credit cards to those who bank with them, rather they wanted to get into the entire lucrative Canadian credit card market. It was about time they did as Canadians, slow as they may have been to adapt, are learning they don't have to get credit cards from the bank they bank with, rather they can get whatever card they like and HSBC wants part of that pie.

Canada Jetlines will launch with Toronto to Calgary flights instead of Moncton & Winnipeg and British Airways adding Vancouver to London Gatwick flights (with lots of award availability!)

This is getting a little confusing. Canada Jetlines was to launch flights from Toronto to Moncton and Winnipeg earlier this month. That was pushed back to next week due to a delay in the airline receiving their license to operate. But now with today's press release from the airline, they will officially launch on September 22 with flights between Toronto and Calgary. Moncton and Winnipeg are totally gone - you can't even book these anymore. They make no mention of Moncton and Winnipeg being dropped, so I wonder about those people who booked travel on these flights if Jetlines is protecting them on other airlines or just providing refunds. I'll be honest, all these changes over the course of this past month and dropping routes before they are even started doesn't bode well for this start up. I wish them the best and hope they can get their act together here as they'll need it to gain the confidence of Canadian travellers. (Source Canada Jetlines)

Aeroplan Availability Alert: Business Class awards from San Francisco to Tahiti on United (with connections from Canada)

As posted earlier this week by The Points Guy  there is quite a bit of availability this fall for award flights on United Airlines between San Francisco and Papeete. Since United is a Star Alliance member you can use your Aeroplan points to redeem for these flights. There is amazing availability in economy class between September and November and there is also some decent business class availability as well. For the SFO-PPT flights Aeroplan charges only 35,000 each way in economy class and 55,000 points each ways in business class. Since it is a partner flight it will be subject to the $39 partner award booking fee.

The newly revamped London Drugs LDExtras program is here! As first noted to us by our reader Tony L. early in July, the new program launched on August 11, 2022. This is the first big update to the London Drugs' LDExtras program since it launched in 2016 and for the most people the revamped program should end up being more rewarding for them!

Scene+ will launch at Sobeys, Safeway and other stores in Western Canada & Western Ontario on September 22

Scene+ Grocery launched earlier this month in Atlantic Canada and today we learned it will be available in Manitoba Western Canada and Western Ontario as of September 22. Thanks to Rewards Canada contributor Jeff W. who forwarded the details to us from an email he received from Sobeys. Empire Company Limited stores such as Sobeys and Safeway will make the switch from AIR MILES to Scene+ on that day.

Starbucks Rewards Double Star Days now require activation & save 20% on WestJet flights to/from Alberta and B.C.

If you are a Starbucks Rewards member they have made a slight change to their Double Stars Day. Previously members would earn double stars for simply making purchases on a Double Stars Day however now they require members to activate the offer beforehand. This is basically the same process we see with so many loyalty promotions in that you have to register for them beforehand. Loyalty programs put these registrations in place as it saves them from awarding extra points (and thus extra costs) to any members who don't activate or register don't earn the bonus.

New RBC Offers include statement credits and discounts for Landmark Cinemas, Wayfair & Etnies

The latest batch of new RBC Offers sees 13 new and extended statement credit or discount promotions for using your RBC card at select retailers! In total there are nearly 40 offers in place with this program.

Personally I received these offers on the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard but most if not all should also available for RBC's most popular card the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card and most other RBC cards.

Buy World of Hyatt points with a 30% discount (1.68 cents US per point!)

Hyatt is out with another buy points offer and this time it is a discount instead of a bonus. When you buy 5,000 or more points in one transaction they will give a 30% discount on the price. This is different than the typical 30 to 40% bonus that we usually see with Hyatt. With the discount the price works out to 1.68 cents (US) per points which is lower than the 1.714 cents per point (US$) seen when they run their highest 40% bonus. When redeemed it can be pretty easy to receive a value of 2 cents per point or higher so you can see it could be worthwhile to purchase them for rewards around the globe or even if you just need a few thousand points to top off for an award.

Aer Lingus has once again brought back their offer that provides an additional discount off of their flights out of Canada. The discount is up to $100 on Economy Class flights and up to $200 off Business Class flights! Great news being forwarded on to us from one our readers! Sam let us know that they received a letter from Scotiabank letting them know that their Scotiabank American Express Card will accepted at IGA stores in Quebec as of October 2022. Historically, most IGA stores in Quebec have not accepted American Express (some have though) and while the letter states acceptance of the Scotiabank Amex I would be led to believe this means all Amex cards will be accepted at IGA stores in Quebec. This of course means you'll soon be able to earn up to 6x points per dollar spent at Quebec IGA stores with the Scotia Amex Cards or 5x points on cards like the American Express Cobalt Card.

Recently I was able to take an excellent vacation with my family to Honolulu, Hawaii. As part of the trip we got to check out the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge in the US transborder terminal at Vancouver International Airport. Today is the day Scene+ officially launches with Sobeys and other Empire Company Limited stores in Atlantic Canada. The news which broke only a few short months ago came as a surprise to many and was a move that solidified Scene+ as a major nationwide loyalty program that isn't just a movie going program.

AIR MILES lowers requirements to reach Gold and Onyx Elite status - is it enough to help the struggling program?

AIR MILES has let us know they are lowering the qualification thresholds for acquiring Gold or Onyx Elite Status with the program. Up until now collectors were required to earn 1,000 Reward Miles in a calendar year to achieve Gold Status and 6,000 miles for Onyx Status. Those requirements have now been lowered to 500 and 5,000 miles respectively.

Meridian Credit Union no longer accepting new credit card applications and a new Guide to Amex's International Airline Program

According to a thread on RFD, Meridian Credit Union has stopped accepting new applications for their cards as they will be changing providers in the fall. There are no details of the planned switch or what the cards will offer when they are released. We have updated our Top Cash Back Card rankings since we had the Meridian Visa Infinite* Cash Back Card ranked as the third best card in the market but now the list shifts up and sees the TD Cash Back Visa Infinite* Card move back into the rankings into 5th spot. Flair Airlines will be switching their Los Angeles area flights from Hollywood Burbank to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX The airline's flights from Vanouver and Edmonton will switch on October 31. Canada Jetlines, the newest Canadian leisure airline has had to delay their launch from August 15th to August 29th. The inaugural flights from Toronto to Winnipeg and Moncton have been pushed back as the airline will not have complete regulatory approval in time for the originally planned launch.
