FREE MILES! Receive 2,020 miles when you join Emirates Skywards

Delayed by a year, Expo 2020 in Dubai is slated to start on October 1 and one of the big sponsors is the hometown airline, Emirates. To celebrate the exposition, Emirates is starting to release numerous promotions and this one here is for new members to their Skywards program. Using the invitation code EXPO2020 anyone who joins the program will automatically receive 2,020 Skywards miles and the airline is offering these new members the opportunity to redeem right away with a special Cash+Miles rate of 2,000 mile = US$20 (but you don't have to redeem they right away if you don't want to.) The new member welcome bonus doesn't have a printed end date however the other promotion on the same landing page mentions bookings must be made by September 15 and seeing how this bonus is being tied into the special Cash+Miles rate I would speculate that's the last day to join and get the miles.

Dubai based Emirates Airlines who flies to Toronto 5x weekly has introduced a new subscription based program that provides additional benefits when flying with the airline. Entitled Skywards+, the new program has three tiers ranging in cost from C$502 to C$1,256 per year with each higher level progressively adding more benefits. Those benefits range from bonus Skywards miles, discounts on flight rewards, lounge access passes and more - much of what you would see if you held elite status with the Skywards program. So with this program you are kind of buying yourself a hybrid elite status with the airline.

Alaska Airlines and Emirates partnership will come to an end on July 31

 
Undoubtedly one of the most aspirational flight awards that Canadian points and miles enthusiasts strove for was to redeem Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles for flights in business and first class on Emirates. By buying miles during Alaska's frequent bonus promotions to churning the MBNA Alaska Airlines World Elite Mastercard, you name it, a lot of it was done to fly on Emirates. Well sad news emerged today that this long sought after award option will be coming to an end. As of July 31 the partnership between Alaska Airlines and Emirates will be dissolved.

Earn Double Elite Tier Skywards Miles on Emirates flights out of Toronto and worldwide

If you find yourself requiring essential travel out of Canada this year and that travel will take you on Emirates you'll be happy to know that Emirates has brought back their Double Elite Tier Miles on all flights offer that we saw for the last few months of 2020. Well, in reality it just ended yesterday but you had to register for it back in December. Difference this time is there no registration requirement so all members will earn the extra tier miles so long as the flights are credited to their Skywards account and are booked by June 30 for travel until the end of the year.

Receive 25% bonus Elite Tier Miles when you convert Marriott or other points to Emirates Skywards

 

Emirates Skywards has offered an array of bonus offers during the pandemic for transferring points, buying miles and more. The latest is this one to boost your tier miles balance. When you convert points or miles from select coalition, bank or hotel programs they will give 25% bonus tier miles as well.  This means you’ll earn 1 Tier Mile for every 4 Skywards Miles you receive in your conversions. The great news with this offer is that the coveted conversion partner of many airline programs is included – that is Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott Bonvoy points convert 3 to 1 to Skywards Miles and when you convert 60,000 Marriott points at once Marriott will kick in an additional 5,000 miles. This means for 60,000 points you’d receive 25,000 Skywards Miles plus 6,250 Tier Miles. If you don’t have any status at all with Skywards and convert enough points/miles to receive the full 25,000 Tier Miles you’ll receive Silver Elite status in the program which includes business class lounge access in Dubai. For us Canadians we can't really take advantage of the financial partners (unless of course you have credit cards/bank accounts in the UAE) but can definitely use the four hotel programs that are part of the transfer bonus.

AIR MILES is offering reduced mileage requirements on over 1,000 reward items in their catalogue for the rest of this year with the It's Been a Year event. And what a year it has been! This offer comes at a good time with Christmas upon us and many Canadians feeling a financial pinch where it may be tougher to pay for gifts so offers like this can go a long way. Yes merchandise rewards aren't the ideal reward if you chase the highest value out of your loyalty currencies but we are in a different world now and this merchandise sale brings values close to or equal to travel redemption values! 

August 6 Update: New Amex Offer for Wayfair, Air Transat cancels Western Canada flights to sun destinations (but offers refunds) & earn Skywards miles for online shopping

A new Amex Offers deal came out this week. Once again we see a statement credit promotion for shopping with Wayfair. Cardmembers who see the offer in their account and register for it will receive a $15 statement credit when they spend $100 or more with Wayfair. We received in our household on the American Express Cobalt Card and the Platinum Card. This offer has been added to our Guide to American Express Canada 'Amex Offers'

Air Transat has decided to cancel flights from Western Canada to sun and U.S. destinations for the upcoming winter season. Flights from Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Victoria are all affected. The good news however is Air Transat will be offering all customers who had booked such flights full refunds rather than vouchers. (Source CTV News)

Emirates Skywards now has an portal where you can earn Skywards miles for online shopping. The portal has a U.S. or U.K. option, as such most Canadians will most likely pick the U.S. option and shop at stores that ship north to us unless you have a U.S. forwarding address where you can even shop at stores that don't ship here and still earn your Skywards miles. Air Canada is planning to resume flights between Toronto and Tokyo as of October 2nd. (Source RoutesOnline)

The rest of Air Canada's international routes have also been updated. Check them out on RoutesOnline. Some flights of note are Calgary-London restarting on October 25, Montreal-Tokyo on October 26, Ottawa-London on October 25, Toronto-Dubai on October 25 and Vancouver-Delhi on September 2.

April 21 Update: Air Canada temporarily suspends transborder U.S. flights, 2x cash back at Rakuten, Emirates pushes back re-launch of flights to July 1

Air Canada has announced the suspension of all U.S. transborder flights as of April 26. This is in response to the extension of the closure of the Canada-U.S. border to non-essential travel for another 30 days. Air Canada has been flying limited flights between Canada and the U.S. since the middle of March primarily for the repatriation of Canadians who were in the U.S. The suspension of flights to the U.S. is currently set to run until May 22. Emirates has once again pushed back the launch of passenger flights. They are now slated to start up on July 1st, yes not until July! If everything holds true they will start to fly to Toronto once again with a 5x weekly schedule. Chances are that this schedule will change again before then. (Source RoutesOnline)

Hilton Honors have extended their systemwide bonus points promotion where you can earn 2,000 Bonus Honors points per stay at Hilton Hotels worldwide plus 10,000 bonus points for every 10 nights stayed. It was scheduled to end on May 3 but it has now been extended to May 31. Of course the worldwide portion of it won't be in the cards for most of us for at least a couple of months but if you have essential travel within Canada and need a hotel stay you can consider Hilton's brands of hotels to take advantage of this bonus. Cathay Pacific announced today a major reduction in flights ad will only fly to 15 destinations during April and May. Vancouver will be one of those cities and Cathay will fly between HKG and YVR three times per week during this time. This means they will completely suspend Toronto flights during this time. Earn double elite qualifying tier miles on Emirates' flights out of Toronto and globally if you book by February 10

Here’s an awesome new bonus offer from Emirates Skywards! Terms and conditions

1. The Emirates Skywards Double Tier Miles Offer February 2020 is open to all individual Emirates Skywards members who:
   • a. are existing Emirates Skywards members, or who enroll as new members by 11:59 p.m. on 10 February 2020 (Dubai time).
   • b. have registered for the offer by 11:59 p.m. on 10 February 2020 (Dubai time) either via email link, emirates.com, Emirates App, flydubai.com or Emirates Retail and Contact Centers. Skysurfers can register only with consent from their Parent/Guardian, who must register via Emirates Retail and Contact Centers.
   • c. have booked and completed issuance of an Eligible Ticket and Eligible Fare (return or one way) between 12:01 a.m. on 4 February 2020 and 11:59 p.m. on 10 February 2020 (Dubai time).
   • d. have commenced and completed their journey on Eligible Flights between 12:01 a.m. on 17 February 2020 and 11:59 p.m. on 20 May 2020 (Dubai time).
2. An Eligible Ticket is defined as:
   • a. any with prefix 176 (being Emirates), prefix 141 or 169 (being flydubai) or any booking receipt issued directly via flydubai.com.
   • b. any purchased via emirates.com, Emirates App, flydubai.com, flydubai App, Emirates Retail and Contact Centers, or via a travel agent.
   • c. any eligible for normal Skywards Miles accrual, per Emirates Skywards Program Rules.
3. An Eligible Fare is defined as:
   • a. on Emirates: “Flex” or “Flex Plus” in either Economy Class, Business Class or First Class.
   • b. on flydubai: “Flex” in Economy Class or “Business” in Business Class.
4. An Eligible Flight is defined as:
   • a. any Emirates marketed flight with EK flight number, operated by Emirates or flydubai.
   • b. any flydubai marketed flight with FZ flight number, operated by flydubai or Emirates.
   • c. all other codeshare and interline flights are excluded from this offer.
5. An Emirates Skywards member who, at the discretion of Emirates Skywards, satisfies all the conditions set out above will be awarded bonus Tier Miles in addition to the Tier Miles normally earned in respect of the flight:
   • a. the bonus multiple is calculated on the total Tier Miles earned.
   • b. the bonus applicable for this promotion is 100% bonus Tier Miles on Eligible Fares and Eligible Flights only.
   • c. the bonus applies as per the original ticketed class, excluding any subsequent reward or complimentary upgrades, or other changes.
   • d. if an Emirates Skywards member qualifies for bonus Tier Miles from any other offer or promotion, only the higher of the eligible bonuses will be credited.
6. The Emirates Skywards member will be notified of the Miles credit in their membership statements, which are accessible on the Emirates App or online at emirates.com or flydubai.com

Earn double Skywards Miles on Emirates flights from Toronto to Dubai and beyond - Book by October 16

Emirates has brought us a pretty decent double miles offer that looks to be targeting flyers from some of the less popular countries they serve as many of their major countries are excluded as flight origins. This includes Canada which means EK's flights out of Toronto will earn double miles as long as you book by October 16 for travel until mid-December and again for a couple months after the busy Christmas season.

Marriott Bonvoy and Emirates Skywards have reopened Your World Rewards to new applications. This was a partnership that originated with Starwood Preferred Guest that was 'put on hold' with Marriott's takeover of SPG. We say put on hold in that it was closed to new registrations but that has now changed and once again elite members both programs will receive reciprocal benefits.
