Air Transat has announced some new U.S. and European routes for Summer 2022. For U.S. flights the airline will offer twice weekly service between Montreal and San Francisco, three times weekly service between Toronto and Los Angeles and they will make Montreal to Miami and Quebec City to Ft. Lauderdale flights year round instead of just over the winter. For Europe the airline is adding Montreal to Amsterdam and Quebec City to London flights. Both of the Europe flights will operate once per week. (Source Air Transat)

In an unannounced move American Express has also now added a NEXUS benefit to The Platinum Card like they will be doing for the revamped Gold Rewards Card. Platinum Cardmembers will receieve up to a $100 statement credit every four years. (HT Canadian Rewards)

Air Transat released news today that they will receive $700 Million in funding from the Federal Government and as such will now allow travellers who received travel credits as a result of COVID-19 to request refunds for those credits. It's been a long time coming for Canadian consumers to get refunds on all the flights and vacation packages that had to be cancelled since last March. WestJet took the initiative first out of the big carriers with Air Canada and now Air Transat only announcing refunds once they were granted loans from the government. Air Transat has set up a dedicated page on their website where you can request a refund for your travel credit. Air Canada's planned acquisition of Air Transat has been terminated

 

On Good Friday news came out that Air Canada and Air Transat agreed to terminate the agreement for Air Canada to buy Air Transat. The acquisition of Air Transat by Air Canada was subject to approval and conditions set out by various governments and regulatory authorities and one of them, the European Commission put onerous conditions in place according to Air Canada. Thus even after making some concessions the two airlines have agreed to call it off due to those conditions.

Last week TD formally announced the option for the TD Rewards program whereby you can shop with points on Amazon. The feature soft launched back in October and last week's press release from TD marks the official launch of the redemption option. This is the same feature American Express offers for those who are familiar with it. All of TD's credit cards that earn TD Rewards Points (like the First Class Visa Infinite card) are eligible and it allows cardholders to link their rewards account with Amazon so that they can redeem points right at check out from Amazon.ca. Per this thread on RFD the redemption rate is 303 points for $1. Learn more about the redemption option here.

I can't recall if I covered this before in this spot but for the Winter season KLM will be returning to Edmonton as part of the airline's Calgary service. 2 of 5 flights per week between Calgary and Amsterdam will have a stop in Edmonton. Meanwhile Toronto is being bumped up to 9 flights per week and Vancouver is being scaled back to 3. (Source RoutesOnline)

August 6 Update: New Amex Offer for Wayfair, Air Transat cancels Western Canada flights to sun destinations (but offers refunds) & earn Skywards miles for online shopping

A new Amex Offers deal came out this week. Once again we see a statement credit promotion for shopping with Wayfair. Cardmembers who see the offer in their account and register for it will receive a $15 statement credit when they spend $100 or more with Wayfair. We received in our household on the American Express Cobalt Card and the Platinum Card. This offer has been added to our Guide to American Express Canada 'Amex Offers'

Air Transat has decided to cancel flights from Western Canada to sun and U.S. destinations for the upcoming winter season. Flights from Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Victoria are all affected. The good news however is Air Transat will be offering all customers who had booked such flights full refunds rather than vouchers. (Source CTV News)

Emirates Skywards now has an portal where you can earn Skywards miles for online shopping. The portal has a U.S. or U.K. option, as such most Canadians will most likely pick the U.S. option and shop at stores that ship north to us unless you have a U.S. forwarding address where you can even shop at stores that don't ship here and still earn your Skywards miles. Air Transat to gradually suspend all flights

Porter Airlines isn't the only Canadian airline announcing a suspension of flights today. Air Transat also released news today that they are going to gradually suspend all flights with most if not all flights ending in about two weeks. They have also halted sales on most flights to/from European, Mexico, Caribbean and U.S. destinations for departures until April 30.

"Sales for departures until April 30 are suspended immediately from and to most destinations in Europe and the United States. Repatriation flights will still be operated during the next two weeks, in order to bring Transat customers back to their home country. So as to allow as many repatriations as possible, sales will, however, remain temporarily open in both directions between Montreal and Paris and Lisbon and between Toronto and London and Lisbon. A date for a full halt to operations will be announced soon.

Sales are also halted immediately from and to the Caribbean and Mexico. Again, flights will continue for a few more days in order to repatriate Transat customers to Canada. Transat is advising its Canadian customers who were scheduled to depart in the coming days to heed the government's recommendations and postpone their departure.

For domestic flights, clients are encouraged to check that their flight is maintained on the website.
Transat customers who are currently at destinations are asked to check the company's website, where necessary information for the organization of their return will be made available. There will be no booking fee and passengers will not have to pay any price difference. It is of the utmost importance to Transat to bring everyone back.

All customers who were unable to travel because their flight is cancelled will receive a credit for future travel, to be used within 24 months of their original travel date."

Remember as well that if an airline cancels a flight you can be entitled to a full refund so you can also ask for that instead of a credit for future travel although this kudos to Air Transat for putting out one of the longest credit periods out there that we have seen yet at 24 months.

March 12 Update: Aeroplan to allow changes or cancel for full refund for March/April travel, Earn 5x CIBC Rewards Points for Air Transat Europe flights & a Hertz Elite Status Match offer

As of yesterday Aeroplan's Coronavirus policy was set in line with Air Canada's. If you have Aeroplan flights booked for travel in March and April you can change them once or cancel for them a full refund. This could also explain why the Aeroplan website is down and from what I can see on Twitter there are very long wait times when you call in. It does appear that contacint them via Twitter may be the best course of action if you want to change or cancel. At least if you try and don't get a response you have an electronic record of you doing so! Thanks to long time Rewards Canada reader Kevin A.  for the details!

We have reached out to AIR MILES to see what their course of action is going to be as right now they are stating they are following to policies of the airlines - which should mean that if you have an Air Canada or WestJet flight booked with AIR MILES you should be able to change those flights at no cost. Still would be nice to see a no charge cancellation policy in place like Aeroplan's!
