WestJet recently announced the return of flights between Calgary and Amsterdam for the winter season and they have some great pricing on the route. The airline was awarded more slots at the Dutch airport so flights will return on November 14 and operate 3x weekly with their Boeing 787 Dreamliner featuring their international business and premium economy class cabins. Hopefully the mess we've all heard about at AMS during the summer travel season is fixed by the time these flights start operating again!

WestJet Elite Status members can earn qualifying spend on redemptions using WestJet dollars

WestJet Rewards Elite Status members who book flights with the airline and use WestJet dollars to pay for part or all of their base airfare will earn qualifying spend even on the redeemed portion. This offer is available for Silver, Gold and Platinum members who book Econo or higher fare classes for WestJet marketed flights and also includes Member Exclusive Fares.

Starbucks Rewards Double Star Days now require activation & save 20% on WestJet flights to/from Alberta and B.C.

If you are a Starbucks Rewards member they have made a slight change to their Double Stars Day. Previously members would earn double stars for simply making purchases on a Double Stars Day however now they require members to activate the offer beforehand. This is basically the same process we see with so many loyalty promotions in that you have to register for them beforehand. Loyalty programs put these registrations in place as it saves them from awarding extra points (and thus extra costs) to any members who don't activate or register don't earn the bonus.

WestJet has announced a new direct non-stop route from Winnipeg to Los Angeles. Launching on October 31 the new year round service will initially operate 3x weekly on Monday, Friday and Saturday. This is great news for the city of Winnipeg to get this flight and I'm sure our readers from YWG will be thrilled for it! Learn more here.

Canada Jetlines officially started to sell tickets today for their first flights. The newest airline in Canada will initially fly from Toronto to Winnipeg and Moncton. Both of these routes are set to launch on August 15. The leisure carrier eventually plans on serving vacation destinations in the U.S., Mexico and Caribbean. Click here to learn more.

WestJet announces a major schedule expansion for the summer including a new Toronto-Chicago route and the return of many more

WestJet sent out four press releases this morning announcing a significant increase in their flight schedules for this summer. The airline is adding one new route and restoring service on more including many of their transatlantic routes.  Here are the details of the WestJet's expansion as travel continues to recover.

The offer has been extended for new applications until May 2, 2022. WestJet has taken a different approach here than Aeroplan who have removed their Buddy Pass offers on their cards in keeping this $0 voucher offer going. It's a great opportunity for some big savings if you know you will booking travel for two or more people.

Big news out of WestJet today - they have announced they are acquiring Sunwing Vacations and Sunwing Airlines. If approved and the deal goes through WestJet will be creating a new tour operating business that will combine Sunwing Vacations and WestJet Vacations. On the airline side it almost reads that Sunwing Airlines will remain as a separate airline that operates under the WestJet group of companies. I could be wrong though. They state it will provide more affordable and competitive airfares and vacation packages however if history is any indicator that is rarely the case when an acquistion in the travel market takes place. WestJet providing a further extension on companion and other vouchers set to expire Dec 31 (You must register to have them extended!)

 

Good news came out this week from the team at WestJet Rewards as they have announced a further extension for most vouchers set to expire on December 31.  This is a wide ranging extension covering a wide variety of vouchers that are issued by the frequent flyer program from Companion Vouchers to Lounge Access Vouchers to Seat Selection Vouchers and more. The key factor this time however is the extension are not automatic. The onus has been put on the member to check their account to see if they have any vouchers with a December 31, 2021 expiry date and if they do they must register to have them extended.
