May 31 Update: Air Canada Gift Cards now available, AF KLM Sign up bonus, Club Carlson transfer rules changing?

The last day of each is usually quieter than the rest but that is not the case today!

Air Canada has launched their own Gift Cards that can be issued as either a physical plastic card (great for birthdays, Christmas etc) or as an eGift Card. You can choose any amount starting at $25 and can view the balance online. More details can be found here. There is a good FAQ via that link but I thought I would post the most important one:

When redeemed online at aircanada.com, at the airport, with your travel agent or by calling Air Canada Reservations*, Air Canada Gift Cards can be used to purchase a flight, and to pay for a variety of travel options, fees and services, including:

• seat selection,
• change fees,
• upgrades,
• additional checked baggage fees,
• pet handling fees,
• unaccompanied minor fees

At this time, the Air Canada Gift card cannot be used toward the payment of:

• onboard purchases (e.g. headsets, beverages, duty-free items)
• merchandise purchased at the Air Canada eBoutique
• Aeroplan or other reward travel tickets
• Air Canada Vacations packages
• tickets purchased as part of a group booking.
• hotel reservations, car rentals or RBC travel insurance
• another gift card
• a Flight Pass purchase

According to Gary over at View from the Wing, Club Carlson is changing their rules on transferring points between accounts. Previously there were no set rules and you could transfer points freely between accounts but potentially, as of June 1st:

non-elite members will have to have had their accounts open for a year to transfer points, will only be able to transfer points to accounts at the same address, and will have had to had their address in place for at least 3 days

There is a short term bonus for purchases made via the Aeroplan eStore. Right now you can earn 5x the Aeroplan miles on all purchases until June 2. Full details (HT Canadian KMs)

Today is the last day to take advantage of this iteration of the famous US Airways Buy Miles bonus:

As I mentioned last month the 100% Bonus on buying US Airways Dividend Miles is back. The offer runs from until May 31st. This time the bonus is for both buying and/or gifting Dividend Miles but has varying bonus levels. Of course buying at the highest level provides you with the biggest bonus.

• Buy/gift 5,000 – 9,999 miles, get a 25% bonus
• Buy/gift 10,000 – 19,999 miles, get a 50% bonus
• Buy/gift 20,000 – 29,999 miles, get a 75% bonus
• Buy/gift 30,000 – 50,000 miles, get a 100% bonus

In today's Globe & Mail there are hints that CIBC may not renew their agreement with Aeroplan! Could the 20 year partnership come to an end soon? We'll have to see what this new card CIBC is planning will have in store. A lot of cards come with a lot of hype before they launch and then when they do they aren't earth shattering. A good example are the Scotiabank Amex cards, while very good in their own right I don't believe they live up to the hype doled out by Scotiabank. The article from today's Globe & Mail as graciously supplied by long time Rewards Canada reader Andrew S is below. Andrew's thoughts are that it would be a bad move for CIBC and I partially agree, although there is a trend for more and more Canadian who are not part of the frequent flyer minority to move away from airline cards and go to travel points or hybrid cards instead for much greater flexibilty and ease of redemption. I am really curious to see who Aeroplan would team up with if this does come to fruition as the partnership with American Express can't provide enough coverage across Canada. They will need to team up an issuer of Visa and/or MasterCard branded cards. Who knows, maybe we will see the return of the Diners Club Aeroplan card (nee enRoute)!

Just a reminder that as of June 1 you will no longer need a Visa to enter the United Arab Emirates if you are travelling there. I was reminded by this email from Emirates:

Q1:         Do I need a visa to enter the United Arab Emirates?

A1:         Regular Canadian passport holders do not need a visa to enter the UAE beginning from June 1^st, 2013.

 

Q3:         Where can I get a visa to enter the United Arab Emirates?

A2:         Starting June 1^st, 2013 Canadian citizens will be granted a free of charge entry visit stamp upon arrival in the UAE.

 

Q3:         How much will an entry visa to the UAE cost?

A3:         There will be no cost for Canadian passport holders to enter the UAE from 01June, 2013.

 

Q4:        How long will I be able to stay in the UAE under their new visa regime?

A4:       (Regular) Canadian passport holders will be granted free of charge entry to the UAE with 
             their visit arrival stamp, again, issued upon arrival in the UAE. No application in advance of
             travel is necessary. Please know that the Canadian passport will be stamped for 30 days
             upon arrival. If further stay is required, an application for an extension should be made to
             the local General Directorate of Residence and Foreign Affairs three days prior to the

Here is my tip of the day:
As a follow up to yesterday's news on the latest Avianva TACA devaluation it appears that many frequent flyers have taken to Facebook to voice their displeasure with LifeMiles lack of being able to communicate changes. In fact, on Facebook LifeMiles denied any changes to the program which we know is not true! This is a classic case of a loyalty program being reactive rather than proactive, LifeMiles is not the first program to do it, closer to home both Aeroplan and Air Miles have done it before and LifeMiles will not be the last either. With all that being said however, the Cash+Miles option and the 100% buy miles promotions from LifeMiles are still a great value but unfortunately not as good as value now for those who just bought miles in the last promo go round. If you are new to this then just heed this warning, if you want a good deal you can still get it from the LifeMiles program but I would not wait to redeem miles bought during a buy miles promotion, I would try to redeem them as soon as possible to avoid any potential changes in the program which based on the experience of the past week can happen at anytime and without notice. This is what I ended up doing, I did not buy any miles during the last LifeMiles promotion as couldn't forsee me using the miles soon and I did not want to forego the cash just to have those miles sit there.

In the span of one week Avianca TACA is becoming one of the most hated Star Alliance based program. For the second time in the past 7 or so days (and third time in ~6 months) they have made changes to their awards without any notification. Firstly it was the increase in select award tickets (see last week's post) and now they have increased the much coveted 40/60 option where you only needed 40% of the miles for a redemption and purchase the remaining 60% at an amazing 1.275 cents each (which is even better than the 100% buy miles option we see several times a year which could/can then be leveraged for that first 40% of miles required). Now with the increase the cost of those miles if 1.56 cents if you max out at the 40/60 option. It appears that all of the news out there in the online world of the 40/60 option combined with the 100% buy miles bonus has taken its toll on Avianca TACA and we are now seeing the after effects of it. It is well known that all programs makes changes, most not to our liking but many have become good at giving the consumer fair warning but Avianca TACA seems to have missed that boat. I know a few of you may be perturbed now as you probably bought miles during the last 100% bonus and now are going to have to pay more for your 40/60 redemption!

On the other end of the spectrum, more good news for RBC Avion cardholders. Early in the week I mentioned that that BA 50% transfer bonus is coming back in July but RBC never mentioned that there is currently a promo for transferring to American AAdvantage. The bonus is 20% and is good until June 30th. See the details below in the bonus offer section (HT Canadian Kilometers)

The PointsHound.com double up feature mentioned right here on RC last week appears to be better than initially stated by the company. Instead of around 1,000 hotels in the U.S. where you can double up at the actual number is around 3,200 hotels in 115 U.S. cities.

For me I will easily earn the 1,000 bonus miles either through a couple of Hertz rentals I have plus I do have some Air Canada Executive Class flights during the period which aren't eligible for the 50% Bonus as they were booked before the promotional period but should count as activity. What doesn't seem clear about the Facebook promotion is whether it is a one time bonus (I'm leaning this way) or if it is a bonus for each transaction.

PointsHound.com gets even better: now offering frequent guest earning benefits at select hotels

PointsHound.com, one the sponsors of my FFB8: The FrequentFlyerBonuses.com 8th Anniversary contest sent out an email last night detailing some exciting enhancements coming to the hotel booking site on Monday. As featured here on Rewards Canada back in October, PointsHound.com is a service that awards a hefty amount of miles or points for booking hotels via their online booking engine.

I don't have a list of those hotels but I would suggest you bring up the hotel you want to stay at on the actual hotel brand site and then also spend an extra minute or two to see if PointsHound.com offers Double Up and comparable prices for that same location.
