United has brought back their bonus for converting hotel points to MileagePlus miles. The bonus for this iteration of the promotion is 30% and you are allowed to earn a maximum of 25,000 bonus miles across all your transfers. Really the only transfer that can make sense is converting Marriott Bonvoy points since they transfer at a a 3 to 1.1 ratio. You’ll also want to do it in 60,000 point batches to ensure you get the extra miles from Marriott. All other hotel programs have pretty terrible conversion ratios however if you have orphaned points in those programs that you know you’ll never use, then by all means convert them over so you can get something of value from them.

New Amex Offers for United Airlines - Spend $400 and receive a $120 statement credit
Another great Amex Offer made its way out this morning. This one is for flights with United Airlines and provides a $120 statement credit if you spend $400 or more. U.S. airlines eliminate some ticket change fees permanently - find out which airlines have done so and which of them included Canada
At the start of this week news broke from United Airlines that they were permanently removing some of those dreaded fees that airlines charge when making changes to tickets. It didn't take long for other U.S. based airlines to follow suit as American and Delta removed fees next and then followed by Alaska Airlines. There is no word yet here in Canada whether our airlines will follow suit and do away with at least some of those pesky fees but I don't hold my hopes up. In fact WestJet just increased some fees on domestic flights citing increased fees from Nav Canada. That being said, most Canadian airlines do offer at least one change to tickets for free based on the current COVID-19 circumstances and that is also what the U.S. airlines have been doing but with this weeks news have gone on to not just consider COVID but make those changes permanent.
United Airlines
As United was first out of the gate with the news here is what they are changing in regards to these fees. They are permanently removing change fees for most economy and premium class tickets for travel within the U.S. (including Alaska, Hawaii Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands) This change doesn't help us Canadians very much unless you are booking a purely U.S. itinerary. United's COVID policy will cover flights out of Canada until the end of the year however after that it is entirely possible those flights will once again incur change fees. This same policy is in effect for Basic Economy fares and other international flights on United.
United also added free same day standby for any flights in their network.
Learn more about United's changes here.
American Airlines
American Airlines took what United did, copied it and went one step further - they included Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico for destination where the ticket change fees were removed from. Ticket types are the same as United's in that it covers all types except Basic Economy. However AA will waive fees on Basic Economy and other International flights until the end of the year as part of their pandemic policy.
American will also offer free same day standby as of October 1st. They are also allowing those who buy Basic Economy fares to buy extras like upgrades, priority boarding and others as of October 1.
Learn more about AA's changes here.
Delta Airlines
Delta Airlines copied United to a tee and didn't expand it like AA did. This means Delta has eliminatied change fees for travel within the domestic U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. It covers pretty much all fare classes except Basic Economy tickets. And just like AA and United, Delta is waiving fees on all fares and flights until the end of December.
Learn more about Delta's changes here.
Alaska Airlines
Alaska was the last out of these four to announce the elimination of ticket changes fees and they chose to be like American Airlines and expand on what is offered beyond what United first set out. Alaska went beyond by eliminating ticket change fees for their entire network which means the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Just like all the other airlines this elimination covers all fares except their lowest saver fare. Where Alaska went one step further is that they have also eliminated the change and cancellatoin fees on Mileage Plus award tickets that for travel on Alaska Airlines.
Learn more about Alaska'a change here.
What about Canada?
As you can see, American and Alaska have included us Canadians in their policies so it is possibly something the two big Canadian airlines may be eyeing. However given the current travel situation, both Alaska and American have very flights from Canada and not many Canadians are even traveling to the U.S.. If history is any indication Canadian airlines tend not to follow U.S. or other international carries with removing revenue sources (they do like to copy policies that increase revenue) so I don't suspect our carriers will follow suit just yet. Given that the airlines have pandemic policies in place already granting some change fee waivers it is entirely possible they'll just keep extending that policy until travel levels return to a somewhat normal level and then start charging everyone again.

Shopping online from the U.S.? Check out these bonus offers from Alaska Airlines, American & United
Online shopping portals are more popular than ever thanks to the huge shift in shopping habits due to the current global situation. With more people shopping online than ever it is a little surprising that we even see any bonus offers for going through these online shopping portals but we are! The three latest offers come from U.S. airlines but are very much accessible to Canadians for those retailers that do ship up to Canada or for even more retailers if you ship to a U.S. address and then forward to Canada. Remember though all these retailers charge in US$ so you may want to utilize a No Foreign Transaction fee card like the HSBC World Elite Mastercard or Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card to save on that 2.5% conversion fee that most other cards charge.
The offers are almost the same from all three - you can earn bonuses of 500 to 2,020 miles in each program and the only real differences are a higher spend requirement with Alaska while American's offer ends one day sooner than the other two.
NOTE: Before you complete any shopping via the portals you do have to register for the promotion(s) which can be done via the links below.
Here are the offers.

United MileagePlus does away with partner award chart for airlines like Air Canada - most awards have now increased in price
Back in November of 2019 United MileagePlus got rid of their published award charts for travel on their own metal and with that moved to dynamic award pricing. They did however retain the charts and award redemption requirements for their partner airlines like Air Canada, Lufthansa and so on. That all changed yesterday when United pulled their partner award chart and immediately seemed to start pricing award on partner airlines dynamically. According to One Mile at a Time many award flights jumped by 10% citing examples of Detroit to Frankfurt on Lufthansa and New York to Seoul on Asiana.
We conducted our own quick search and sure enough Toronto-Frankfurt on Air Canada is pricing 10% higher now:
The timing of this move doesn't make sense with the pandemic on hand and such little travel taking place now and for the immediate future. It works contrary to logical thinking when airlines will want to try to fill seats once travel resumes. Who knows maybe we can remain optimistic as we could all be jumping the gun right now (I'm not, but trying to stay as positive as possible here...) that there is the possibility that United has loaded new base mileage amounts at 10% to 12% higher as that seems to be the common denominator and will in due time implement dynamic pricing as has already been stated by United to several bloggers. That means we could see lower and higher mileage requirements and it wouldn't surprise me if the lower requirement typically ends up being 30K and 70K for the first example above. That is, the amount prior to the increase we are seeing as of today. It's kind of like those shady retailers who illegally raise prices right before a sale and then advertise a big sale..... although in the world of loyalty programs this move isn't illegal.

United MileagePlus provides elite status extensions, lowers qualification requirements and more
Following in the footsteps of Delta's announcement, United brought out details for the MileagePlus members detailing status extensions and more on Sunday. This news is almost an exact copy of Delta's with status extension, extensions for memberships and certificates however there are some slight differences.
Here are the key points for Canadian MileagePlus members:
If you have current 2020 Premier status, it will be extended to January 31, 2022. At a minimum, you will enjoy the same published status next year that you have today, up to and including Premier 1K®.
For the 2021 status year, United is reducing thresholds for Premier qualification by 50% for each status level, to make reaching an even higher tier easier. You'll still need a minimum of four flight segments on United or United Express®.
2021 status Earn Premier qualifying flights and PQP … or meet a higher PQP goal Silver 6 2,000 2,500 Gold 12 4,000 5,000 Platinum 18 6,000 7,500 1K 26 9,000 12,000
1K® and Platinum members, we're increasing your ability to upgrade by extending PlusPoints expiration dates by six months and expanding Skip Waitlist.
- This means a six-month extension of any PlusPoints set to expire on or before January 31, 2021.
We're extending all annual membership and subscription benefits by six months.
- Last year we introduced Skip Waitlist on select flights as a benefit to 1K members, giving you more opportunities to confirm an upgrade request at the time of booking. This benefit will now be available for the rest of 2020 in a significantly expanded selection of long-haul international regions and will have expanded availability in 2021 as well.
All electronic travel certificates now have 24 months to be used.
- We want to make sure your benefits are still there when you're ready to start flying again. That's why we're extending purchased United Club℠ memberships and purchased subscriptions for Economy Plus®, United Wi-Fi℠ and checked bags by six months. You should see this reflected in your MileagePlus account soon.
We have removed some redeposit fees for the rest of the year.
- If your travel plans have been disrupted, and you have an electronic travel certificate from us for the value of your ticket, you now have two years from the date it was issued to book a new flight, as well as up to an additional 11 months to travel. This includes all currently valid and all new electronic travel certificates issued on or after April 1, 2020.
- We are currently waiving all award redeposit fees for travel through end of May 2020.
- We are now also waiving all redeposit fees for award ticket cancellations made more than 30 days before departure for the remainder of 2020.
If you read the post about Delta's announcement we had this morning you'll see it is the elite qualifying portion where United differs. Delta did not lower elite qualifying requirements for 2020 like United has done here. United has cut the requirements to qualify for 2021 by half. This could potentially mean some of you may be close to or have already qualified for 2021 if you flew United enough prior to the non-essential travel market shutting down. Just like Delta we also see United extend the validity of certificates and membership programs like United Club. It also nice to see United waive more fees in regards to cancelling MileagePlus award tickets.
United also stated in their announcement that they will make it easier to earn 2022 status during 2021 but they will announce how at a later date.

Add in the bonus from the portal and you have completed a quadruple dip! Remember as well many of the stores for the U.S. based airlines and hotels are in US$ and ship from there so you can save some extra cash by using a No Foreign Transaction fee card like the Scotia Passport Visa Infinite Card. December 20 Update: SPG Amex will have 15 elite night credit added early in 2019, United adding Toronto-San Francisco flights & more!
Earlier this year when the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express underwent some changes due to the complete integration of SPG and Marriott Rewards into one program it was noted in a letter from Amex that the card would soon offer qualifying night credits. When it was first announced it wasn't stated how many nights but at that time we assumed it would probably be 15 just like the extinct Chase Marriott Premier Visa card offered. Well there is now confirmation that the card will offer those 15 nights starting sometime early in the New Year and it will be an annual benefit. (Source Reddit)
United Airlines will be adding new service between Toronto and San Francisco. The flights that start on March 31, 2019 will operate twice daily and offer good connection times to United's Asia and South Pacific flights. Of course their Star Alliance partner Air Canada also serves the route and additions are always good for looking for routes to redeem miles for from Aeroplan, MileagePlus or other Star Alliance programs. Your best conversion bet is from Marriott/SPG but also IHG thanks to the latter's buy points bonus. With this bonus you could actually 'buy' MileagePlus miles for just over US 1.9 cents each with the current IHG Rewards Club buy points bonus. You can buy 200,000 points for US$1,000 with IHG and then convert those to MileagePlus. The 200,000 converts to 40,000 MileagePlus Miles and the 30% bonus boosts that to 52,000 miles.

5 Days Only! 30% Discount on buying Choice Privileges points and how it gets you MileagePlus miles for US 1.18 cents each
Choice Privileges last buy points offer just ended yesterday and now they launch this 5 day sale offering a straight 30% discount when you buy 5,000 or more points. As the price is flat rate across the board from 5,000 to 50,000 points the price you pay per point is 0.77 cents (US). This is a good value in its own right for stays at Choice Hotels globally but it also provides one of the cheapest options to obtain United MileagePlus miles due to United's special hotel conversion bonus that runs until the end of the month. In this promotion United will give you 2,500 miles per 5,000 Privileges Points (instead of 1,000) and also give you a 30% bonus on top of that. This means for every 5,000 Privileges points you'll obtain 3,250 MileagePlus miles. Do the math and you are buying the MileagePlus miles for 1.18 cents each (US). Now that's a great deal.
