Aug 30 Update: MBNA Choice MC Bonus, No IHG Q4 Promo, 3x Miles @ InterContinental Hotels & More!

As mentioned yesterday MBNA officially launched another limited time increased sign up bonus, this time it is for the MBNA Choice Privileges MasterCard . The sign up bonus is normally 8,000 points (good for one free night at select locations) but that bonus has now been increased to 24,000 points. See my post from earlier today for complete details
InterContinental Hotels Group Priority Club has advised me that they will NOT be running a fourth quarter systemwide promotion. This is quite a change for them as they have been consistent at running quartely type bonuses for many years. On top of that a lot of their competitors have already announced their fall or fourth quarter promos so this came as a bit of a surprise. Hopefully they will continue with their loosely targetted Stay X Get Y bonus offers in the fall when the current batch expire at the end of September.

New Amex Membership Rewards Transfer Partner: Etihad Airways
I have been hinting at a new transfer partner for the Canadian American Express Membership rewards program since June but have not been able to release those details until now. The information is officially up on Amex Canada's site and the new partner is Etihad Airways and their Guest program.
The transfer ratio of 1,000 MR points to 750 Etihad Guest Miles is the same ratio as Alitalia, Cathay Pacific and Delta.
How is this beneficial to Canadian's especially since some of you may not have even heard of Etihad? Well they do fly between Toronto and Abu Dhabi three times per week with ongoing connections across the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

SPG Fall Promo: "Better by the Night"
I am still on vacation but here is another that shouldn't wait until next week although technically speaking the offer is not open for registration yet.
Starwood has released the details of their fall systemwide promo (kind of a misnomer as there are quite a few properties not participating) called Better by the Night:
This time the team from SPG have decided to make this promo less complicated than the summer "Nice Choice" promo. It's pretty easy, earn Double Starpoints on all eligible stays of 1 or 2 nights, Triple Starpoints on all eligible stays of 3 or more nights. Taking a page from the current Priority Club systemwide promo SPG will also award bonus Starpoints for certain online bookings. Members will earn 250 Bonus Starpoints for eligible stays booked on SPG.com and 500 Bonus Starpoints for stays booked via the SPG iPhone App.
You must register for this promo by November 30 for stays between October 1 and December 20, 2012

Quick update while I am on holidays!
I'm in the middle of taking some time off but can't really keep away from posting some offers, I won't go into huge details but here are some things that have cropped up in the past week that are worth mentioning:
Icelandair Saga Club is offering a 20% bonus on buying Saga Club miles which I found in my email and didn't think much of it and thought would add it to the site when I get back to work. Well thanks to Rob, who follows Rewards Canada, I have been made aware of a 50,000 point sign up bonus for the card! American Express TripFlex online point redemption now available
Following in the footsteps of Capital One's Aspire cards that allow you to redeem points for any travel put on the card via an online process, American Express now has the feature as well.
When I logged into my Amex account earlier this week I was surprised to see a new link under my card details "Use points for qualified transactions"
So of course I clicked on the link and it took me the Membership Rewards portion of Amex's site with a listing of travel purchases from the last three months to which you can assign points to get a credit against that charge. Transactions between 3 and 12 months old still require you to call in to redeem points against.
Being a huge fan of my American Express Gold Rewards Card this enhancement is a great new feature for the card and makes the redemption process that much easier (not that calling in was hard but in this day and age many of us prefer to do things ourselves, online of course!). TripFlex is part of any American Express Card that offer Membership Rewards points so this includes the previously mentioned Gold Rewards Card plus The Platinum Card from American Express and the business and corporate versions of those cards. This is just one of a few positive changes I know of that has happened recently with Membership Rewards with the other being the increased redemption ratio to British Airways Executive Club and soon there will be another airline partner for redemption but I cannot release that information yet!

No news for today but I do have a tip for those of you who travel Europe often and want the European Passenger Rights at your fingertips. There is now an app issued by the European Commission that covers air and rail travel in Europe that explains people's rights and options should a problem (ie flight delay) arise. The beauty of the app is that it works offline should you be stuck in a small European airport or rail station with no internet service! More details can be found on Tnooz

Marriott Rewards has long been known as one of the toughest programs to qualify for the highest level elite tier, in this case Platinum with Marriott and once qualified they have been knocked by many as there are no complimentary suite upgrades for those Platinum members. That seems to be slowly changing as Marriott will now be offering complimentary suite upgrades to Platinum members but only for stays in the Asia Pacific region. Marriott is taking a step in the right direction with this announcement and hopefully it will be implemented Worldwide sometime soon. For more details please see here,
If you hold Gold or Platinum Elite status with Le Club Accor Hotels is offering you free breakfast for one or two people every morning of your stay and a welcome amenity when you redeem your points for hotel reward vouchers. British Airways Executive Club will now allow you to use your Avios points to upgrade flights that are booked via a travel agent. Previously the using Avios points to upgrade your flight option was only available for flights booked directly with British Airways. This is how it is now worded on BA's website:
Bookings made through your travel agent can now be upgraded on ba.com or through your local Executive Club service centre. The flights you would like to upgrade must be booked and ticketed in eligible booking classes, however Bulk Tour (BT) and Inclusive Tour (IT) fare types are not eligible.

US Airways Dividend Miles is offering a pseudo-fast track to their elite Preferred status program. This offer requires you to buy 90 day status and then fly a certain amount of miles to maintain that status or achieve a higher status level. In general this isn't that bad of offer if you know you will enough flights to maintain that status or even if you have Star Alliance flights coming up in the next 90 days where this status can come in handy.

British Airways Executive Club will now allow you to use your Avios points to upgrade flights that are booked via a travel agent. Previously the using Avios points to upgrade your flight option was only available for flights booked directly with British Airways. This is how it is now worded on BA's website:
Bookings made through your travel agent can now be upgraded on ba.com or through your local Executive Club service centre. The flights you would like to upgrade must be booked and ticketed in eligible booking classes, however Bulk Tour (BT) and Inclusive Tour (IT) fare types are not eligible.

US Airways Dividend Miles is offering a pseudo-fast track to their elite Preferred status program. This offer requires you to buy 90 day status and then fly a certain amount of miles to maintain that status or achieve a higher status level. In general this isn't that bad of offer if you know you will enough flights to maintain that status or even if you have Star Alliance flights coming up in the next 90 days where this status can come in handy.

The biggest news today came from WestJet about their plan to reconfigure their fleet by adding a premium economy section to all their planes. The good thing about this news is that the new premium economy sections will offer a 36" seat pitch, complimentary on-board amenities (I'm guessing headphones, pillows, blankets etc) and priority boarding. The bad thing about this announcement is that for those people who will not be using the premium economy section you will now have less leg room than before as seat pitch will be at 31-32" versus the previous 32-34" depending on the plane. Some flyers are already asking the question, since you will pay a premium for more leg room on premium economy will the seats with less leg room be cheaper now? I doubt it! One also has to ask how much more is WestJet going to charge for the premium economy section, Anyways, I forsee WestJet Rewards program adding some sort of elite tiers in the near future where the elite members will be able to upgrade or be upgraded to these premium economy sections. It also seems beneficial to someone who may be buying a business class or first class ticket on one of WestJet's partners which includes WestJet metal as part of the trip that instead of the WestJet leg being strictly economy those people will now get seats in the premium economy section.
