Aeroplan officially adds Etihad Airways as an airline partner

You may recall that back in April of 2019 news came out that Etihad Airways would become a partner of Aeroplan as of May 1, 2019. Well that was news that was accidentally released as the partnership was not set to launch at that time. Well we can pass along the news that it is finally official as Etihad is now an airline partner of Aeroplan. This brings the total number of airlines that you can earn and redeem Aeroplan miles on to 35.

Here are some key points provided by Aeroplan on the new partnership with Etihad
* Etihad flights will be subject to the Fixed Mileage Flight Reward chart, available here
* Members will be able to book Etihad flights online at aeroplan.com, as well as via their Contact Centre.
* Etihad flights can be combined with flights operated by Air Canada and other international partners.
* Fuel surcharges will not apply on Etihad operated flights.

When you fly Etihad Airways on eligible paid tickets you will earn Aeroplan miles as follows:
It's great to see this partnership come to fruition as Etihad connects Toronto to hundreds of global destinations via Abu Dhabi and gives Aeroplan members that many more choices to redeem their miles on for award flights. Note point four above that fuel surcharges do not apply to Etihad flights! The partnership however does not provide recognition of elite status benefits nor do Etihad flights count towards Air Canada Altitude elite status.

Aeroplan also let us know that more partners are going to be added in the coming weeks in preparation of the launch of the new Aeroplan program.

Learn more about the Etihad Aeroplan partnership here.

April 14 Update: Earn points for registering for Rexall's new Be Well program, Best Western cancellation policy update, hotel occupancy rates down to 12.8% in Canada

https://www.rexall.ca/loyaltyrewards

Rexall has brought back the sign up bonus for preregistering for their loyalty program that will launch on May 1. With today's news we now know it will be called Be Well and it will replace AIR MILES as the loyalty program for Rexall. We first brought you the details of the program back in February and the new offer is the same as the one in February whereby you preregister for the program and they'll award you 10,000 points when it launches. Those 10,000 points are worth $4. If you haven't preregistered already you are eligible to earn this bonus now as long as you sign up by April 29. Find out more and preregister here.

Best Western has finally published a COVID-19 cancellation policy. Prior to this they were leaving it up to each individual hotel as to what they wanted to do with non-refundable/non-cancellable reservations. They have now set in place a policy for their locations in Canada, the U.S. and Caribbean as follows:
  • The policy applies to any reservation for any future arrival date.
  • The policy applies to hotels located in the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean.
  • Guests may cancel at any time, as long as cancellation occurs least 24 hours before arrival, and the reservation is cancelled on or before June 30, 2020.
  • Hotels will waive all fees associated with the cancellation of the booking.
  • Applies to all booking channels.

And on the topic of hotels - the occupancy of hotels in Canada for the week of March 31 to April 6 dropped from 79% in 2019 to 12.8%. Ouch. The worst decline was seen in Quebec with occupancy rates dropping to 6.1% from 89.8%. (Source Canadian Lodging News)

It appears that Etihad is planning to resume 5x weekly flights between Toronto and Abu Dhabi as of April 22 (Source RoutesOnline)

40% Discount for buying Etihad Guest miles - use to plan future travel like Prague-Seoul in business class for only US$312

Etihad Guest is the latest airline loyalty program to launch a buy miles offer in attempt to boost some much needed cash flow. Until April 7 you can buy miles with a 40% discount which translates to a per mile cost of US 1.2 cents. Etihad flies from Toronto to Abu Dhabi, normally, but of course right now they aren't flying the route. Also redeeming miles on Etihad tends to be an expensive proposition, for example, to redeem for Business Class round trip between Toronto and Abu Dhabi costs just over 200,000 Guest Miles. However Etihad does have a lot of partner airlines where using their miles can make sense. One of those sweet spots is redeeming Etihad Guest miles to fly on Czech Airlines between Prague and Seoul. The redemption amount is ridiculously low - only 25,610 miles for business class one way. So just over 51,000 round trip if needed.

With this 40% discount on buying Etihad Guest miles you can get that one way trip in business class for only US$312 (+GST/HST as Points.com is a Canadian company)

This is an unbelievable deal to be able to fly in business class - yes Czech Airlines business isn't the same as Etihad's but for about $450 to fly this route is amazing. Of course you would be buying the miles speculatively right now as Czech Airlines isn't flying right now nor is Etihad and most flights their partners offer aren't in the air either. The good news is that Etihad states right on the buy miles page that any miles bought are valid for a minimum of two years so it will give you some time to plan some potentially amazing trips. This is definitely one of the better speculative offers out in the market right now.

Offer details:
40% Discount when you buy 1,000 or more Etihad Guest Miles. Buy miles here. Until Apr 7, 20

October 8 Update: 20% Bonus for converting hotel points to Etihad Guest, Double Avios on all Accor Hotel stays Worldwide including Fairmont & more bonus offers

Today was primarily a bonus offer day on our websites! There are definitely a couple you may want to check out.

The first offer is more so for our mileage and program maximizers as it is quite program specific. It is the return of Etihad Guest's transfer bonus offer. This is similar in vain to Aeroplan's hotel transfer bonus offers we often feature on here. With this bonus you'll get 20% bonus Etihad Guest miles when you convert points from hotel and financial partners (unfortunately Amex Canada is not participating this time) As with almost all these transfer bonuses your best bet is transferring points from Marriott Bonvoy. When you convert 60,000 Bonvoy Points Marriott will kick in an additional 5,000 miles. In this case that means you can get 30,000 Etihad Guest miles for the 60,000 Bonvoy points (25,000 + 20%). Etihad isn't a program overly utilized by many Canadians but they do have sweet spots in their program such as redeeming miles to fly Business Class between Prague and Seoul on Czech Airlines. This redemption is only 25,610 Etihad Guest miles one way! Learn more about the transfer offer here.

---

The second bonus you may want to check out is the new Iberia Plus bonus offer for stays at Accor Hotels Worldwide including our coveted Fairmont Hotels. The reason you may want to pay more attention to this offer is that Iberia Plus has the best earn rates (conversion rates that is) with Accor Hotels out of all the hotel's airline partners. Basically the points convert 1:1 and you may think why would I want to credit to Iberia instead of Aeroplan as I use the latter program more. The main reason why is that Iberia Plus' currency is Avios. Yes the same currency as British Airways Executive Club and you can transfer the Avios from Iberia to British Airways so long as you have your accounts linked for 90 days. BA's own earn rate at Accor is 2:1 so you would earn half the normal amount of points compared to the earn rate with Iberia (not taking into account this bonus!) Learn more about the bonus here!

May 1 Update: Etihad not an Aeroplan partner quite yet, Marriott entering the home rental market & more!

Yesterday was quite the Air Canada Aeroplan day on our site with six blog posts covering Air Canada and Aeroplan (and one more today to boot!) Two of those posts, the ones looking at Market Fare Rewards and Etihad becoming an Aeroplan partner stemmed from my visits to the Aeroplan site yesterday to find offer examples for the A look at how the current TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card sign up offer of up to 30,000 miles can provide huge value! post. If you visit the site regularily you'll know that on the bottom left hand side of the home page there is a section called 'Latest News'. I was surprised when I saw a couple of 'May 1' posts in the Latest News section seeing that it was April 30. Turns out this may have been a mistake on Aeroplan's side and those were removed sometime later. One of the pieces of the news, the More Value For Your Aeroplan Miles is now back on the Aeroplan site however the Etihad news is not. So if you are reading our Etihad post from yesterday you'll find the link now lands on a blank page on Aeroplan. The Etihad news seems legit but obviously it is not ready to be released just yet! I'm guessing it will come soon though now that the cat's out of the bag!

Yesterday Marriott announced a new initiative targeting airbnb, Homeaway and other home rental companies! Called Homes & Villas by Marriott International, the new Marriott 'brand' will challenge others in the space by being integrated into the Marriott Bonvoy program where members will be able to earn and redeem points for stays on these home rentals! Find out more here
Marriott International (NASDAQ: MAR) announced Homes & Villas by Marriott International, a home rental initiative offering 2,000 premium and luxury homes located in over 100 destinations throughout the United States, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America. Starting next week when the offering launches, we expect members of Marriott Bonvoy can earn and redeem points at these highly-curated homes, providing even more choice of accommodations that suit a range of travel needs around the world.
“The launch of Homes & Villas by Marriott International reflects our ongoing commitment to innovation as consumer travel needs evolve,” said Stephanie Linnartz, Global Chief Commercial Officer, Marriott International. “What started out as a pilot a year ago is now a global offering, providing our guests with the space and amenities of a home backed by a trusted travel company, and the very best in loyalty benefits.

Marriott’s expansion into home rentals was developed as a result of the 2018 pilot under the brand extension Tribute Portfolio Homes. Of the guests who booked a home during the pilot, which was only available in select European cities, nearly 90 percent were members of Marriott Bonvoy and over three-quarters were traveling for leisure with family and friends. During the pilot, the average guest stay was more than triple the typical hotel stay. These insights, along with Marriott’s commitment to providing travelers with unique and different accommodations including spacious homes with one or more bedrooms, large kitchens, in-unit laundry and more, played an important role in guiding the selection of luxury and premium homes, as well as the key leisure markets available at launch that complement the core offerings of Marriott’s hotel portfolio.

Luxury & Premium Offerings
The introduction of Homes & Villas by Marriott International adds nearly 40 new leisure destinations for Marriott Bonvoy members to earn and redeem points, including Sorrento, Italy and the Amalfi Coast, Italy; North Lake Tahoe, California; and St. Barts in the Caribbean. This curated selection of homes aims to connect travelers to thousands of rental properties around the world and sets the stage for guests’ most treasured travel moments - home-cooked dinners with extended family, lawn games in the backyard or celebrating a milestone birthday with family and friends. Homes include:
  • A four-bedroom cottage on six private acres of California wine country.
  • A six bedroom villa in Sorrento, Italy with an infinity pool overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and a wood-fire pizza oven.
  • An oceanfront villa in Anguilla with private beach and a personal butler and house staff.
  • A 18th century Irish Castle that sleeps 17 and features a private lake for boating and fishing.
  • A six-bedroom townhouse in London with a children’s playroom and climbing wall.
Marriott is launching Homes & Villas by Marriott International with select property management companies that are already managing these homes. These trusted property management companies provide guests a professionally cleaned home with 24/7 support, high speed Wi-Fi, premium linens and amenities, and family-friendly conveniences upon request. At launch, the property management companies selected by Marriott include TurnKey Vacation Rentals, LaCure, Loyd & Townsend Rose, Veeve, London Residents Club as well as current hotel owners and operators like Mainsail Lodging, and Reserva Conchal. Over time, Marriott expects to introduce Homes & Villas by Marriott International in additional markets as well as increase the number of homes offered in these launch destinations.

“Our approach to home rentals allows us to curate an incredible collection of homes that deliver an elevated travel experience,” said Jennifer Hsieh, Vice President, Homes & Villas by Marriott International. “By working with a select group of professional management companies that understand and operate in this dynamic landscape, we are able to focus on what we do best – selecting a breadth of homes in inspiring destinations, setting standards for responsive service and designing a seamless booking experience that helps our guests navigate an increasingly complex and uncertain set of home rental choices.”

How to Book
Starting next week, we expect travelers can search and book homes on the Homes & Villas by Marriott International site – www.homesandvillasbymarriott.com. At that time, travelers searching on Marriott.com for accommodations for three-plus nights in markets where home inventory exists will see links to Homes & Villas by Marriott International, promoting home rentals as an offering to meet their needs. Marriott is in the process of determining how it will sell Homes & Villas by Marriott International through other channels, including the Marriott Bonvoy app and travel advisors, and will provide an update in the near future.

Etihad Airways to join Aeroplan as an airline mileage earning partner

Aeroplan will be adding a new airline partner tomorrow!

UAE's Etihad Airways will be an earning partner as of May 1st. It does appear there are no redemption options when this partnership kicks off but hopefully that will come shortly. Also there will not be any elite status benefits being extended by Etihad to Air Canada Altitude members.

Here is a link to the news.

April 3 Update: RBC introduces Pay Bills with Points redemption option, save 15% on Etihad's flights out of Canada and more!

RBC has introduced a new redemption option for those holding RBC credit cards that earn RBC Rewards Points. You can now redeem your points via the "Pay Bills with Points' options to pay bills
like phone, internet, utility bills and more. This may be helpful to some where the vendor is one that normally doesn't accept credit cards for payment. Think Plastiq, payTM, and a host of other providers who offer a similar service - however RBC's is different in that you are not using your credit card to pay the bill but rather you points. This is the first of its kind in Canada where you can directly pay for bills with points. There are of course indirect options to do the same, you can use a service like Plastiq or payTM where the charge goes on your credit card and then use a Points for Purchases redemption option that almost all providers have now to pay for that charge. RBC doesn't tell us in the press release what the redemption rate is for Pay Bills with Points is so we call on the Rewards Canada community to see if they can let us know (we only have the RBC WestJet cards in our wallets and of course it doesn't work for this redemption option). I also assume there will be some merchants who do accept credit cards in the list that you can pay with points - in all likelihood you are better off paying those retailers directly so that you earn the points first and then redeem against the charge (assuming the Use Points for Purchases redemption rate is the same as the Use Points for Bills)
