AIR MILES adding card linked offers for Save-On-Foods on September 22

Here's an interesting development in the ongoing saga of AIR MILES and grocery partners. As most of you should already know, AIR MILES and the Empire Group of stores such as Sobeys and Safeway are parting ways. Atlantic Canada was first and the Western Canada sees them switch to Scene+ on September 22. But that's not all that will happen on September 22. Coincidentally, on that date AIR MILES will be launching card linked offers for grocery shopping at Save-On-Foods.

Sep 22 Update - The offer has now been revealed: Earn 100 bonus AIR MILES when you spend $100 at Save-On-Foods, Urban Fare and other grocery stores

In fact if you have enough points to redeem at the highest level, 48,000 points for $200 off your grocery bill you'll be redeeming points at nearly the same value as travel redemptions via the program. The Ultimate Guide to Credit Card & Loyalty Programs for the All Inclusive Vacationer

This feature was originally published on the Rewards Canada website in October of 2019 and has been updated for 2021! With travel starting to open up more for Canadians many people will be looking to get away this winter to some sunny destinations and the good news is you can use your credit card points and loyalty programs for All Inclusive Vacations!

As Canadians we know what it’s like to live with long, drawn out winters. We dread the short daylight hours and the biting wind. So how do we as a nation battle the season we look forward to before Christmas but are sick of by the first week of January? We travel. We travel to warmer sun drenched locales and for many of us that means an all inclusive vacation. Canadian winters and all inclusive vacations go hand in hand.

CIBC credit & debit cardholders can earn 2x More Rewards points at Save-On-Foods, Urban Fare and PriceSmart Foods

A little over a year ago the More Rewards program had their only banking relationship come to an end. That's saw the end of the More Rewards Visa that was issued by Scotia which was unfortunate as it was the number one no fee travel points credit card at the time.  Since that time More Rewards hasn't had any partnerships with a financial institution until today.

An announcement came across the wire today that CIBC and More Rewards have now partnered up so that CIBC credit card and debit card holders can earn extra More Rewards points when shopping at Save-On-Foods, Urban Fare and PriceSmart Foods. The promotion is interesting in that if you have a CIBC credit or debit card and are a More Rewards member you don't have to do anything. You will automatically start earning 2x More Rewards points per dollar spent at any of those three grocery stores as long as you pay for the purchase with a CIBC issued card and give your More Rewards number.

Here are some more details from today's press release:

In addition to doubling the More Rewards points earned at the checkout or online, from November 26th, 2020 to February 28th, 2021, customers are automatically entered to win** one of four prizes of FREE Groceries for a Year when they use their More Rewards and CIBC credit or debit cards at one of the three participating grocers.

“We are thrilled to launch this exciting new partnership with CIBC which allows our customers to earn double the More Rewards points on their purchases with no requirement to link cards or register,” said Dan Howe, President, More Rewards. “We are committed to providing excellent value to our customers, and this partnership is a new, innovative, and simple way of doing just that.”

As one of Western Canada’s favourite loyalty programs, More Rewards has over 3.5 million members. Their extensive customer data will provide greater opportunities to offer significantly more personalized promotions to customers.

This new partnership provides CIBC with high marketing value through a unique 360-degree omni channel ecosystem which includes More Rewards digital platforms, Save-On-Foods store and digital assets, as well as Jim Pattison media assets. More Rewards is in the midst of a large digital transformation, and the new CIBC partnership will improve our capability to focus on high opportunity customers. With a new app in development serving up personalized offers, CIBC will be cross promoted with all of the More Rewards partners.

“The new partnership between CIBC and More Rewards is an exciting one as we see our shared values align to offer our customers increased value for their hard-earned money,” said Diane Ferri, Senior Vice-President of Card Products, CIBC. “By teaming up with More Rewards we are proud to offer Western Canadian families a new opportunity to enhance their grocery shopping experience.”

The double More Rewards points will be awarded over and above any points earned on the CIBC cards. So for example if you go spend $100 at Save-On Foods you'll earn 200 More Rewards Points (100 base + 100 bonus for using a CIBC card) and then 150 Aventura or Aeroplan points if you use a CIBC Infinite or Infinite Privilege card or 100 Aventura or Aeroplan points for the entry level cards.

Now part of me is thinking this may a test as well to see how well it is received and could very well lead to a new More Rewards credit card being launched with CIBC of course.

Learn more about this new partnership here

Excellent Deal: 50x points when you book Sandman Hotels via More Rewards Travel

Western Canada's More Rewards is offering a pretty sweet deal for booking Sandman Hotel stays via their in-house travel agency aptly named More Rewards Travel. The offer provides 50x More Rewards points for bookings made by September 30 and completed by December 31. Bookings made via More Rewards Travel earn 1 point per $1 spent in their loyalty program which means you'd end up earning 50 More Rewards Points per dollar spent with this promotion.

Let's see how this is an excellent deal! We took a look at the Sandman Signature Edmonton South Hotel for a one night stay on October 16:

More Rewards Travel is showing $106 per night + taxes/fees for a total of $119.49. Here is the same hotel on Sandman's website:

Same price as More Rewards Travel and a check of Expedia, Trivago and so on all show the same. In the past More Rewards Travel has been known to sometimes charge more for hotel rooms compared to other booking sites but as we can see this is not the case here and that's why this is a good deal with the 50x points. This particular stay would earn 5,322 More Rewards Points ($106.44 x 50) and with More Points being worth 0.423 cents each (when you redeem them towards travel) you are earning $22.51 in rewards. Then on top of this you'd earn the points on whichever credit card you use to make the booking (I'd recommend the American Express Gold Rewards or Platinum Card with their 2x points earning on travel) Unfortunately (not sure if it really is...) you can't earn Sandman Hotel's Lucky13 rewards stamps on stays booked via More Rewards Travel.

Offer details:
50x More Rewards when you book and pay cash, credit, or redeem your More Rewards points for stays at a participating Sandman Hotel Group Property (Sandman or Sandman Signature) through More Rewards Travel Full details Book by Sep 30 for stays until Dec 31, 20

Coast Hotels Coast Rewards Points Bonanza - Earn double points or miles on all stays until September 14

As soon as Coast Hotels last double points promo ended last week they revealed another one! Points Bonanza, mmm Bonanza, I wish Bonanza buffet was still around (I do believe there is one in Edmonton... maybe our YEG readers can confirm) but then again this pandemic has kind of put a stop to buffets for the most part.... Sorry, time to get back on track here! The Coast Rewards points bonanza takes their previous double points promotion but expands it beyond Coast Rewards to include all of their earning partners. This means you can earn double points or miles with five different programs. Simply choose your earning preference in your Coast Rewards account and any stays until September 14 will earn double in that program. This means for Aeroplan each stay will earn 500 to 1,000 miles, Mileage Plan will be 1,000 miles, Hawaiian is 400 and More Rewards will be 2 points per pre-tax dollar.

Offer details:
Earn Double Coast Rewards Points, Aeroplan Miles, Mileage Plan Miles, HawaiianMiles or More Rewards Points when you stay at any Coast Hotels location in Canada or the U.S. Full details Until Sep 14, 20
