Eurowings Discover is the latest airline to join the ranks as an Aeroplan partner

This past Sunday, Lufthansa's newest leisure airline Eurowings Discover took to the skies with a flight from Frankfurt to Zanzibar. Being part of the Lufthansa group means this airline is perfect to add as a partner and Aeroplan did just that. As of today Eurowings Discover became the next airline partner of the Aeroplan program and they become a full fledged partner meaning that you can earn and redeem Aeroplan points for flights with them.

This is the seventh airline that Air Canada Aeroplan has added to the program since June of 2020 and represents the biggest growth in partnerships out of any frequent flyer program during this time (not including Alaska joining oneworld).

Eurowings which is Lufthansa's low cost airline, is a brand has been in existence for quite sometime now that consisted of Eurowings and Germanwings however they stopped using the latter about 5 years ago as the combined all low cost operations under Eurowings. The new Eurowings Discover is the leisure airline that is part of this low cost arm of Lufthansa that will provide flights to leisure destinations Africa, North America, the Indian Ocean, and the Caribbean. For Canada, the airline will fly to two destinations starting in 2022, Calgary will launch in May 23 and Halifax will start up on June 13. Despite being a leisure airline their long haul Airbus A330 planes will feature lie flat business class seats, a premium economy section and of course your regular business class.

Becoming a full fledged Aeroplan partner means members will be able to earn and redeem Aeroplan points on Eurowings Discover. The earning and redemption will be as follows

Earning:

  • Members can earn Aeroplan points based on distance flown on all scheduled flights operated by 4Y.
  • Members can earn Status Qualifying Miles (SQM) and Status Qualifying Segments (SQS), as well as Status Qualifying Dollars (SQD) on flights ticketed by Air Canada.

Redeeming

  • Eurowings Discover  flights will be priced based on Aeroplan’s pricing for partner airlines.
  • Members will be able to book Eurowings flights online at aircanada.com, through the Air Canada mobile app, or via Aeroplan’s Contact Centre.
  • Eurowings flights can be combined with flights operated by Air Canada and our other international airline partners.
  • Eurowings flights are eligible for redemption in Business and Economy classes.
  • The partner booking fee of $39 will apply for flight rewards which include travel on Eurowings

Here is Aeroplan's points requirements between North America and Europe. You'll want to look at the Partner airlines amounts to see how much it will cost in points to fly on Eurowings:

Based on the above the Halifax flights will be 35,000 points one way for economy class and 60,000 for business class while Calgary will be 40,000 and 70,000 respectively.

Wrapping it up

Having more options to earn and burn points is always a good thing when it comes to loyalty programs. This is especially true when it comes to an airline that does serve Canada, or in this case will be serving Canada. Despite being a leisure airline I feel Eurowings Discover won't be discounted by some members in Calgary and Halifax seeing that they do offer a lie flat business class product or for those who are willing to connect in those two cities.
