SAS Scandinavian EuroBonus is the next airline to release mileage earning changes for 2015. Unfortunately those flying on the cheapest fares including some of the higher SAS Plus categories won't earn as many EuroBonus points. The only flights where there seems to be an increase in mileage earning is long haul business class. The good news is that Elite Status qualification is lowered! Point requirements for Gold status: 45 000 Basic points (previously 50 000) or 45 one-way trips (previously 50), for Diamond status: 90 000 Basic points (previously 100 000) or 90 one-way trips (previously 100) (Source SAS)

Japan Airlines Mileage Bank have also released the details of their 2015 program. Some the major highlights include

• JAL International First Class and Business Class award tickets mileage requirements are changing, see the charts below for flights from Vancouver and other North American cities to Japan (not until Nov 1, 2015, now that's advance notice!!). As you can see business and first class are seeing major increases except on select days of the week and the lowest discount economy goes lower!
• one way International award flights now only costing half the miles of a round trip flight.
• new phone in fees for changing award ticket reservations
• using miles to pay for excess baggage fees
• award tickets will be able to be changed to the next higher class without the mileage reinstatement fee (Source JAL)

The world of loyalty is remaining quiet this month but that is typical for August and summer in general. Watch for lots of news, program changes, enhancements and devaluations to come this September. The good news is that bonus offers never stop and we have two really good new offers to tell you about today.

Marriott Rewards has decided to return to its roots as their next systemwide promotion is once again called MegaBonus instead of the Getaway Bonus as the previous iteration was called. No matter what the name is the bonus is essentially the same and just like the previous Getaway Bonus offer there aren't any free night certificate options only bonus points. The offer is definitely weaker without the free nights option that we used to see as you typically would get a free night at either a Cat 1-4 or Cat 1-5 hotel after only two stays. It was a great reward that was easily achievable. Nonetheless bonus points are a still very valuable but it will take you more stays to get to the equivalent free night. It is a somewhat surprising move as the Free Night offer provides a higher percentage of breakage versus the bonus point offers.

The other big bonus comes to us from SAS EuroBonus and it is to celebrate their new all business class Stavanger to Houston flight. The offer provides Gold Elite status after one round trip on the new route and Diamond Status after two trips. Granted I don't think too many of us Canucks will jump on this but then again if you aren't going to reach status with Air Canada or other Star Aliiance members it might be worthwhile to jump on a cheap flight or a North American award to ticket to Houston to get yourself status via the new SAS flight.

The page that "Full details" leads to is in Swedish and we can't seem to find an English version and that is because we assume it is only meant for those living in Sweden. I gave it a try when signing up stating I was from Canada and that didn't work. So I changed my country to Sweden (you don't have to put in a house address just yet but you do have to put in mobile number, it seems any nine digits will work) and it let me sign for the program. That's step 1, which gave me 500 points.

Us Canadian's can ignore this next step - Step 2 is only for Swedes, they'll get 6,000 more points when they get a SAS EuroBonus co-branded credit card,

Step 3 is one that everyone else should be able to complete and that is for 1,500 more points for watching videos and answering questions. The only way to access those videos is from the welcome email you get from EuroBonus:

Click the link and it takes you this page which will have your name and EuroBonus auto populated so I can't just copy and paste the URL for you

When you finish each video you have to answer questions relating to the video, the good thing is since I don't understand Swedish the quiz lets you change your answer a couple of time until you have each one right! If you click too many wrong answers just watch the video again and then answer the questions.

Now I have  2,000 points in my EuroBonus account, which means I'll only need 23 Avis rentals for a North American Award ticket or only 1,000 more to access one of SAS's business class lounges in Scandinavia!  I will eventually update my EuroBonus profile to my correct address and such but don't believe I'll need to do it until I get closer to redeeming.

Why you should consider crediting your Avis rentals to SAS EuroBonus

A few weeks ago (or was it even last week?) we passed along the news that SAS EuroBonus will now award 1,000 points for any eligible Avis rental that is booked through their page on the Avis World website at avisworld.com/eurobonus

Why is this significant? 1,000 points for a rental may not seem a lot but when you compare it to many other programs it actually is especially when looking a rentals of 1 day or less. Aeroplan only offers 500 miles per Avis rental excluding any bonuses and many U.S. programs offer 50 miles per day excluding bonuses. Some programs award varying levels of points per day so that is why this SAS EuroBonus tactic should really only be looked at for one day rentals.

When looking at our home grown program, Aeroplan, it would take you 50 Avis rentals to get enough Aeroplan miles for an economy class award ticket within North America. With SAS EuroBonus their old earn rate prior to April 1st was also 500 points but now that it has been doubled, you can get enough SAS EuroBonus points for a round trip economy class award ticket in North America with only 25 Avis rentals and this is why you should consider moving your 1 day or less Avis rentals to SAS EuroBonus. Of course bonus offers may change this value proposition but most of the time those bonus offers require rentals of multiple days.

Although we haven't wrote about before here on Rewards Canada, you should do the same for one day or less Hertz or Alamo rentals by crediting those to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club as you'll earn 1,000 miles for any eligible rental with those two companies. This is also valuable as Flying Club miles can be converted to Hilton HHonors points if you never for see redeeming miles via Flying Club for flights.

But what about consolidating all your points into you main account you may ask? While I still tend to preach about focusing on one program a person should also look at how quickly you can be rewarded. If you are planning 25 Avis rentals this year and know you'll be 12,500 miles short of an award with Aeroplan than you should probably credit those to Aeroplan but if you have no award flights planned or just wing it when it comes to that department you are better off crediting to EuroBonus and getting a free round trip award flight vs. a one way award flight.

SAS EuroBonus will now award a standard 1,000 points per Avis rental instead of 500 when you book online at http://www.avisworld.com/eurobonus. Rentals made at an Avis desk or via phone will only earn 500 points. If you do a lot of one day rentals this type of earning structure can become very lucrative.

Another SAS news piece is that right now for stays at Scandic Hotels you can earn both SAS EuroBonus points and Scandic Friends points on all your stays. This offer runs until Jun 30. Full details

Feb 10 Update: Fly Air Canada's 787 between Toronto & Montreal, SAS EuroBonus gets a revamp, Etihad extends award ticket discount promo

Air Canada will be receiving their Boeing 787's soon to which we have already provided lots of coverage about here on the RC blog included what routes they are initially operating on. For training purposes the plane will be used between Toronto and Montreal in May and June (and a little bit in July) so if you don't think you will get on one of these birds soon for an international flight you can always get on one of these short flights. Aeroplan is showing lots of availability at 15,000 Miles (+$168 in taxes/fees) or you can buy tickets outright for around $330 all in. If you have just recevied or plan on getting one of the TD Aeroplan Visa's that come with a 2 for 1 short haul Aeroplan flight this could be one of those great experiences to use that on. I know there are only a few of you here in Canada who are SAS EuroBonus members so chances are you already know this news but just in case you haven't heard the EuroBonus program is going through some changes this April. The best change is that you can achieve Silver status with only 5 flights on SAS, Wideroe or Estonian Air instead of 10 and the addition of a new top tier, Diamond. Other changes include the ability to give someone Sliver status when you achieve Gold Status or giving someone Gold Status when you achieve Diamond. Increased availability of award flights will also be a new benefit for Gold and Diamond members while Diamonds will also get extended point validity. I could be wrong but from the quick glance at the changes they all seem positive which is a rarity these days! Find all the details here.

Rewards Canada reader Bill W. first alerted us many months ago about the new Smart Check-In feature at Aloft Hotels and now he lets us know that Starwood is expanding program in the coming months including three locations right here in Canada. (thanks once again to Bill W. for keeping us up to speed on this initiative)

As reminder the program is only available to select SPG members at this time but for knowledge sake here is how the program works:

How does it work?

On the day of your arrival at any participating Aloft hotel we will send a message to your mobile device with your room number. When you arrive you can bypass the front desk and proceed directly to your room. Once at your room just touch and hold your Aloft brand SPG card to the door lock and the door will unlock. It's easy-breezy!
With your Aloft brand SPG card, you will be able to take advantage of one of the easiest and fastest check-in experiences ever offered in the hotel industry. You will no longer need to check in at the front desk or kiosk when you arrive, but still enjoy full access to the front desk throughout your stay. Any costs incurred during your stay will be charged to the credit card used to book your reservation. Feel free to stop by the front desk at any time if you have questions or concerns. Also, please note that while your new Aloft brand SPG card does not list your specific SPG member tier, you will continue to receive all the benefits of your tier.

How do I join?

Currently the program is targeted to select SPG members and we are not able to add any additional members at this time. But, please be on the lookout for your invitation to join as we hope to expand the program in the near future!

Travelling to Turkey? Either on Turkish Airlines' direct flight from YYZ or via another connection point? You should note the change in their Visa application requirements which now have you go online at https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/tour/ to obtain a Visa:

• For the moment, Turkish visa can be obtained on arrival (if you are eligible), from the Turkish missions or over the e-Visa Application system (if you are eligible). Please note that visa on arrival will no longer be available as of 10 April 2014.

• e-Visa is valid for tourism and trade purposes only.

• You can check if you are eligible for e-Visa by clicking “Apply Now” and selecting your nationality. Each traveler must obtain a separate e-Visa, including infants and kids. (Even though kids/infants are included in their parent’s passports)

• Your passport must be valid at least for 6 months by the time you enter Turkey. Depending on your nationality, there might be some additional requirements to be met. You will be informed of these after you select your nationality and travel dates.

• You can find out about e-Visa fee by clicking “Apply Now” and selecting your nationality.

• You can only make payment by Mastercard and Visa credit/debit card. The card is not required to be under your name. Please note that cards issued by Turkish Banks are not accepted. Kindly make sure that your card has “3D Secure System” and is open to international transactions.

• After you receive the “e-mail address verification message”, you need to click “approve” button and proceed with the payment within 24 hours. Otherwise, your application will time out, hence the system will not accept payment and you will need to make a new application.

• Kindly inform the Support Desk (via “Contact Form” under “Contact Us” section on main page) in case of any suspended or unsuccessful transaction throughout the whole application procedure. Please do not make a new application or a new payment unless advised otherwise. The Ministry will not be responsible for additional payments and no refund will be granted in case of such unfinished transactions.

• e-Visa fee is only in USD .You don’t have to have a USD account. An equivalent amount in your local currency will be deducted from your account.

• After you make payment, the link to download your e-Visa will be e-mailed to you. Please print out and keep your e-Visa with you while entering and exiting Turkey.

• Validity period of your e-Visa is different than duration of stay. You can enter Turkey anytime within validity period. Please note that, if you wish to enter Turkey earlier than the date specified on your e-Visa, you need to make a new application.

• Once e-Visa is processed, none of the information on it can be changed. It is your responsibility to secure that information on e-Visa is exactly the same with the information on your passport. Otherwise, your e-Visa will be invalid, and there will be no refund for it.

• There are numerous web sites which claim to assist users in receiving Turkish e-Visas in return of a service charge. We do not have any connection with them. Therefore, we cannot be held responsible for any misuse of information or failure of service on their side.

• e-Visa application has no connection with Turkish Embassies or Consulates General. For any information you should contact e-Visa Support Desk through “Contact Us” on the main page.

You may recall that yesterday we posted a couple of targeted Air Canada flight bonuses, well it turns out Aeroplan had incorrect terms and conditions on the systemwide bonus of up to 15,000 Bonus Aeroplan miles. British Airways Executive Club is introducing Lifetime Gold Elite status for members that have earned or will earn 35,000 life time tier points. Full details can be found here

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club has improved their award ticket cancellation policy. Previously you would forfeit 25% of the points if you cancelled 7+ days out and would lose all the miles if cancelled within 7 days of departure. Now the rules state:

 If for any reason a flight reward is cancelled by the Member outside 24 hours of departure, 100% of the Miles will be re-credited to the member’s account. A cancellation fee of £30 for changes to flights originating in the UK, US$50 for changes to flights originating in the US or local currency equivalent of US$50 for changes to flights originating in any other region will apply. If for any reason a flight reward is cancelled within 24 hours prior to departure, no Miles will be refunded and no fee will be charged. If you change the original travel date (within 24 hours of departure) and later decide to cancel your flights, you will forfeit the mileage used for the reward. Once travel has commenced Miles cannot be refunded. Except as expressly stated in these Flying Club Terms, Miles are not refundable and changes or revalidation are not permitted in case of no-show.

The latest set of Air France KLM Flying Blue Promo Awards are out. For this latest set, business class out of Montreal is the only Canadian option but it is a good one as usual with award tickets available at 50% the regular mileage cost. This means you can get round trip flights between Montreal and Europe 1/2/3 for only 50,000 Flying Blue Miles instead of 100,000. You can also redeem one way for 25,000 miles. Much like last week's news from EVA Air about their new miles and cash option for buying tickets, SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) has announced the option for their EuroBonus members. The EuroBonus Points & Cash option has the same slider feature as EVA Air allowing the member to choose exactly how many points and how much cash he or she wants to use to book the ticket. The ticket is considered a regular fare and not a EuroBonus ticket so it is eligible for upgrades using points and is not limited to only EuroBonus ticket availability but rather any available seat. The contest is open to Canadian residents who are Wyndham Rewards members (free to join via the contest if you are not a member) and the prize is 1 Million Aeroplan Miles. The good side of me is sharing this with you as the devil on my other shoulder is telling me don't tell anyone as more people will enter the contest and your odds of winning go down! Glad I don't listen to that side! You have until April 30 to enter and you can enter the contest here.

Air Canada has introduced a Lowest Price Guarantee for booking on AirCanada.com that guarantees if you find a lower Air Canada price (at least $5 lower) on any other online travel retail site within 24 hours, they’ll match it and offer you a $50 credit. The guarantee only applies to Air Canada , Air Canada Express (operated by Jazz Aviation LP, Sky Regional Airlines Inc., Exploits Valley Air Services Ltd or Air Georgian) or Air Canada rouge flights from Canada with codeshares being excluded. My wording may have been a bit vague yesterday about the new card being launched. The information will be posted here on the Rewards Canada blog at 5:30PM EST tonight. Scandinavian EuroBonus brings back their refer a friend bonus

SAS Scandinavian EuroBonus ran a member-get-a-member referral bonus recently, well to be exact it only ended on September 30. Fast forward to October 11 and the promo is back! This time around however the points aren't totally free and easy. During the last iteration you got 500 points simply for having the people you refer sign up for the programs. This time the people you refer have to have activity in their account by the end of 2012 to get the 500 EuroBonus points per referral (up to a maximum of 6,000 points).  Complete details on the latest offer can be found here

This new activity rule definitely makes the points harder to earn (especially for those of us outside of Scandinavia) as there are no easy ways to earn points outside of travel and/or points transfers from Credit Cards. In many cases the easiest way to earn points is via an online shopping mall but SAS' is limited to Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.
