Last minute loyalty program laundry - check for expiring miles and points, vouchers and more

With just a week left in 2021 now is a good time to double check if you have any points and miles that will be expiring at the end of this year. For the most part, the majority of loyalty programs have extended the pause on points and miles expiry into 2022 however there are a select few that are not. The biggest program I can think that is not extending points expiry after December 31, 2021 is World of Hyatt. There are others as well which I list further below in the post.

September 14 Update: You can now book Aeroplan reward tickets for Canadian North online, WestJet adds no charge COVID-19 Travel Insurance ahead of slightly expanded international flying schedule

Aeroplan
members can now book Canadian North reward flights online on the Aeroplan website. Prior to this you had to call in to book reward flights and pay the phone in booking fee. This is nice little update to the program in your ability to search and book these famous flights online. They are famous as they tend to be very expensive and some of the routes like Edmonton to anywhere in the Northwest Territories price out as Short Haul flights within the Aeroplan program which means you are redeeming as little as 7,500 miles one way. (Source Aeroplan)
Here is the current Canadian North route map:

WestJet announced late last week they will provide no-charge COVID-19 travel insurance for select air and vacation reservations. Remember this coverage doens't replace your regular travel insurance as it is only specific to COVID-19 as listed below. (Source WestJet)

For reservations made on or after September 18, 2020, any WestJet air-only reservation including WestJet Vacations bookings for travel to and from Mexico, the Caribbean (excluding the U.S.), Europe (including U.K.) and inbound to Canada will provide eligible guests no-charge COVID-19 travel insurance through new partner TuGo®. Coverage will be automatically applied at no additional charge to eligible guests at the time of purchase for travel until August 31, 2021 for up to 21 days. One-way travel reservations will also be eligible for coverage for up to seven days.

TuGo® Travel Insurance COVID-19 coverage for WestJet guests includes*:

  • Emergency medical and hospital costs for outbound travellers if diagnosed with COVID-19 while outside of Canada (excluding U.S) for up to a maximum limit of $100,000 CAD per insured person.
  • Emergency medical and hospital costs for inbound travellers visiting Canada diagnosed with COVID-19 while in Canada up to the maximum limit of $100,000 CAD per insured person.
  • Quarantine accommodation costs when the traveller tests positive for COVID-19 on the trip up to $150 CAD per insured person, per day to a maximum of 14 days for inbound and outbound reservations.
  • Ambulance transportation and air evacuation costs related to COVID-19, up to the maximum limit of $100,000 CAD per insured person for inbound and outbound guests.
  • COVID-19 repatriation costs in case of death of up to $5,000 CAD per insured person for inbound and outbound guests.
  • One-way economy airfare for the return of one travelling companion and dependent children when air evacuated back home for treatment.

Airline Schedule Updates
A summary Canadian operations based on data from RoutesOnline and other sources. Remember that many of these route plans are subject to change and right now they are changing frequently!

WestJet revealed an updated fall schedule today that sees a few U.S. and International routes return on top of those they are already serving. (Source WestJet)

While the schedule is significantly reduced compared to 2019, several major routes have returned including non-stop service between Calgary and Palm Springs, Phoenix, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas along with the return of non-stop service between Toronto and Kingston and Montego Bay, Jamaica and Cancun. The airline is also reintroducing non-stop Dreamliner service from Toronto to London (Gatwick).

November 20 Update: Scotia credit card updates, new Amex offer for mobile service providers, Aer Lingus cuts Montreal & 30% off Canadian North flights

Finally got around to updating the Scotiabank credit card offers as many were set to end on October 31. Most if not all offers have simply been extended as follows:

Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite card
Earn up to 35,000 bonus Scotia Rewards points in your first year (that’s up to $350 towards travel)* Offer ends March 1, 2020
Scotia Momentum® Mastercard
•7.99% introductory interest rate on purchases for the first 6 months (19.99% after that) Offer ends March 1, 2020
Scotia Momentum® VISA* Infinite card
• First year annual fee waived Offer ends December 30, 2019
You can see all the Scotia card offers on our Scotiabank page

Yet another Amex offer has been released. This offer awards bonus Membership Rewards points for paying for mobile service provider costs (cell phone bill etc.) with your targeted American Express card. Personally I received it for the American Express Gold Rewards card. The offer? 1,000 Bonus Membership Rewards points when I make three $30 or more payments. That's 333 bonus points per $30. Not a huge offer but better than nothing! You can check to see if you got the offer via the Amex app or when logging into your account online.

Aer Lingus has apparently decided not to proceed with their planned Montreal-Dublin flight. It was supposed to initially launch this past summer but that was delayed to the summer 2020 season and now according to Business Traveller the route will not materialize.

Looking to buy some miles or points? Over on our global site we released a summary of all the current buy miles and points bonus offers. Check it out here.

Canadian North and First Air to merge - Aurora Rewards will remain as the new airline's frequent flyer program

On July 10 the Government of Canada approved the merger of Canada's two major airlines of the north, First Air and Canadian North. The merged airline will be known as Canadian North but with a planned integration timeline of 18-24 months the two airlines will continue to operate separately for the time being.

Here are highlights of what is to come:
  • A major priority will be to develop a combined flight schedule that will enable customers of both airlines to book any flight operated by First Air or Canadian North. This schedule will be released later this year, several months before it takes effect. Communities will continue to receive passenger and cargo capacity that fully meets their needs, with competitive passenger and cargo rates.
  • Canadian North’s popular Aurora Rewards loyalty program will be expanded to all scheduled flights operated by First Air, so that customers of both airlines have the ability to earn Aurora Rewards points and Aeroplan Miles that can be redeemed for free flights.
  • A unified ‘Canadian North’ brand will begin to roll out, featuring the First Air’s distinctive Inukshuk logo and red and white colour palette. This brand will be seen in more and more places as time progresses, including the website, uniforms, counter signage and aircraft livery.
  • Dedicated and hard-working First Air and Canadian North team members will be brought together under the unified Canadian North banner. This will be a gradual process that will be completed hand-in-hand with other milestones such as combining flight reservations systems, fare products, operational processes, fleets and facilities.
  • The merged airline will strive to lead the aviation industry as a top employer, with continued focus on recruiting Inuit and other Indigenous team members for excellent careers within this sector.
For most of you reading this post it is the second bullet point that will be of greatest interest. The new airline will retain Canadian North's current Aurora Rewards program. As we have written about in the past, this program is unique in that all flights let you double dip for earning - that is you can earn Aurora Rewards points AND Aeroplan miles for the same flight on the same ticket. You can then choose to redeem either Aurora Rewards points or Aeroplan miles for the flights on the airline.  The latter tends to be very popular as ticket prices for flying to the North or even between two points in Northern Canada can be very expensive so being able to redeem Aeroplan miles for them can provide some huge value.

We'll be sure to keep you up to date with the integration process over the next year and a half to two years!

Read more about this announcement here.

November 9 Update: Canadian North adding wireless IFE, Aeroplan Air Canada Getaway Bonus nixed for 2019, 10x Plum Points at Chapters Indigo

Canadian North will be adding wireless in-flight entertainment on select flights starting in January 2019 that are serviced with four of their 737s. If all goes to plan and the service is well received it will be expanded to all 16 of their aircraft. (Source Canadian North)

This exciting new inflight amenity, which utilizes Global Eagle’s portable Airconnect Go system, will initially be available on four Canadian North Boeing 737-300 aircraft, with service to be offered to passengers on the following daily scheduled flights:
  • Flights 436 and 437 - Iqaluit ⇄ Ottawa
  • Flights 444 and 445 - Edmonton ⇄ Yellowknife ⇄ Norman Wells ⇄ Inuvik
Aeroplan has updated one of the benefits of the Aeroplan status program: "As of January 1 2019, the Air Canada Getaway Bonus benefit will no longer be available" All other benefits will remain the same (Source Aeroplan)

For the next four days you can earn 10x Plum Points for all online purchases of $40 or more in-store or online at Chapters Indigo. This offer ends November 12. Find out more here

January 29 Update: Case Study of a Fixed Return Card vs. a Reward Chart Card, Canadian North Aurora Rewards award ticket sale & lots more!

Our Case Study: Fixed Return Travel Card versus a Reward Chart Travel Card has been updated and relaunched. We removed it a couple of months ago as it used the Capital One Aspire World Elite Mastercard in the comparison and as we all know that card is no longer available for new applications. We have replaced it with another straight 2% back card, the mbna Rewards World Elite Mastercard. You can read the Case Study here

Canadian North Aurora Rewards members can save 30% on all Aurora Rewards award flights if you book by February 4th! Find out more here

A reminder that PC Plus and Shoppers Optimum become PC Optimum on February 1st. I have finished a bunch of interviews over the past few days on the upcoming consolidation and one good question that came up is what could Loblaw's do to promote this. Here's what I said (and feel free to take it PC Optimum) for this coming weekend, February 1 to 4 offer points on all purchases at Loblaw's stores (Real Canadian Superstore, No Frills etc.) not just those items selected for you in the app and then offer 25x points over at Shoppers Optimum. Get your customers in and get them used to new program and reward them handsomely at the start and they won't forget it. I know it won't happen as they probably already have something planned and usually it's never as good as it should be for the consumer. Anyways it's just a thought. Read our post on the merger here.

Hainan Airlines, who already fly to Calgary and Toronto are adding flights to Vancouver. Coming this May you'll be able to fly Vancouver-Tianjin-Shenzen twice per week. Hainan Airlines has their own frequent flyer program called Fortune Wings (you can find their bonus offer listing here on Rewards Canada) or what probably makes more sense for Canadian's flying on Hainan is crediting those flights to Alaska Airlines. (Source Routesonline)

Not only did WestJet announce the brand new Halifax-Paris service today, they also announced a whole bunch of route enhancements for the summer:
Vancouver Toronto Calgary Edmonton
  • An increase of 24 weekly flights between Vancouver and Calgary for a total of 16 times daily, with hourly service in both directions (top of the hour from Vancouver, and bottom of the hour from Calgary).
