September 11 Update: Air Canada upgauges Ottawa-London while cutting Ottawa-Frankfurt, Amex adds Vancouver's TransLink as a merchant & much more!

Yesterday we brought you the news that Lufthansa will be launching new flights between Ottawa and Frankfurt. At the time we wondered if Air Canada would continue their summer seasonal service on the same route. Confirmation came late yesterday afternoon that they will not fly the route anymore, they'll leave it to Lufthansa. In the same press release however there was good news in that Air Canada will be replacing the aircraft used to fly between Ottawa and London to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner instead of the old Boeing 767. American Express has added TransLink (Vancouver's public transit system) to their merchant network. This should come as good news for American Express Cobalt cardmembers as the card earns 2x points on transit purchases. American Express Canada and TransLink are pleased to announce that riders on Vancouver's public transit system can now pay for fares with American Express. Cardmembers can now tap their Canadian contactless American Express® Card or their mobile wallet to pay at TransLink fare gates and on buses to get around the Metro Vancouver area. American Express Cards can also be used to purchase fares at Compass Vending Machines, online or by phone.

Hilton Honors: 100% bonus when you buy points until October 22

Hilton Honors has released another buy points promotion for their members! This one is a nice flat bonus rate of 100% bonus points when you buy 10,000 or more points. This means you are paying US$ 0.5 cents per point which can be easily redeemed at values of 0.8 cents or more!

Remember reward nights start out at only 5,000 points so you could essentially get up to 16 to 32 nights depending on which points package you buy.

And here's an example of how this buy points deal can provide some great value. Want to stay at the Hilton Whistler Resort & Spa during the height of the Christmas season? The cheapest going rate is C$1,328 per night on December 29 and 30th. The points requirement? 80,000 points per night. So it would take 160,000 points for 2 nights or paying $2,656 plus taxes for the same room and nights. 160,000 points would mean you only buy 80,000 points (and get 80,000 as a bonus) for US$800 or about C$1092 (includes GST on the points purchase). This example would save you over $1,500! Also for those who would like to know, the 80,000 point rate is also available on New Year's Eve.

Summary of global hotel systemwide bonus points promotions – September Edition

Here is your monthly update of all the global hotel bonus points promotions that are available! One of the easiest ways to rack up lots of hotel points is to take advantage of these systemwide bonuses that come from many of the big chain programs and also from the lesser known programs. In fact, right now it should be rare for you NOT to earn a bonus. Unless you are staying at a boutique hotel or perhaps an independent hotel most other hotels out there have a bonus. So take advantage of it! These systemwide bonuses simply require you to register beforehand and they do not affect hotel pricing as long as you book a point eligible rate which are most rates out there. Here is new discount rate offer for stays at select Marriott Hotels in Canada. These select hotels are the ones Marriott considers as the most luxurious in their portfolio in Canada. There are seven hotels to choose from in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton and Muskoka.

Both Economy and Business Class are included and their is only one route available - Montreal to Zurich.

Lufthansa adding direct Ottawa to Frankfurt flights in 2020!

Exciting news for those living in and around Ottawa! Lufthansa has announced new direct non-stop flights between Ottawa and Frankfurt. The flights will start May 16, 2020 and operate 5x per week:

From Germany's largest hub, Lufthansa will depart for the North American destination five times a week - on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The flight LH472 will leave Frankfurt at 1.45 p.m. and arrive at its destination at 4.05 p.m. local time. The return flight LH473 will depart Ottawa at 5.50 p.m. and arrive in Frankfurt at 7.15 a.m. the next day. An Airbus A340-300 with a total of 279 seats on board will carry out the flight. The booking classes are Business Class, Premium Economy Class and Economy Class.

 Air Canada has flown this route as a summer seasonal service so it is entirely possible we may not see Air Canada fly the route next year and leave it to LH. Seeing that LH is an Air Canada / Aeroplan partner it is not that huge of deal. You'll still be able to book it as an Air Canada code share and earn and redeem Aeroplan miles for the flight. What may be even better news, is that if you are a Miles & More member, this route, seeing that it is new will most likely be included in Miles & More's Monthly Mileage Bargain offers that sees redemption amounts typically cut in half (30,000 for economy and 55,000 for business vs. 60,000 and 112,000 respectively). If this is the case we should see those emerge around February of next year.  Watch for our monthly coverage of the mileage bargains later today (This month has SWISS' flight between Montreal and Zurich) and each every month to see if the Ottawa route is offered in the future.

Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for September - These cards provide some of the best value out of their welcome bonuses

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of September! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards that have very good acquisition (sign up) offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the just sign up bonus, but when most or all of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when you grab them strictly for the sign up rewards.  This month we drop to 3 cards that have no annual fee in the first year and two cards with an annual fee in the first year.

Finally some changes to this list although the top two cards haven't changed. The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite card with its new welcome offer just increased its stranglehold on the top spot while the Marriott card remains in second. New to the list is the new offer on the NBC World Elite Mastercard  which moves it into third place and the new offer on the TD First Class Visa Infinite card gives it enough value for fourth. Rounding out the top 5 is the still great offer on the BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard.

Here are our top 5 credit card sign up offers for September (in order of welcome bonus value)

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card - 40,000 Miles (Apply here)

TD has come out with the best ever offer for this card and it is first year free so that means up to 35,000 of the 40,000 miles would come to you at no cost other then spending on the card. The bonus is awarded as follows: 15,000 Aeroplan Miles when you make your first Purchase with your Card + Double Aeroplan Miles on all purchases in the first three months (up to 20,000 miles) and 5,000 miles for adding an additional card ($50 fee). Depending on how you redeem those Aeroplan miles should be worth no less than $400 but more likely closer to $800 or more! In fact if you take the per mile value from our post from late July this welcome bonus would be worth $2,000 or more.
Minimum Income: $60,000 Personal or $100,000 Household

Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card - 50,000 Points (Apply here)

This is the only card on the list that has an annual fee right of the bat but the sign up bonus and other benefits more than make up for it. The 50,000 points, awarded after spending $1,500 on the card in three months are worth at least $500 in our minds which means after subtracting the annual fee you are coming out ahead by $380. In reality you can pull even more value out of the card (into four figures) as we outlined in our post A look at how The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card provides huge value!

National Bank of Canada World Elite Mastercard - $480 Cash Back (Apply here)
This the second card on the list that has an annual fee right of the bat but the sign up bonus and other benefits more than make up for it. You will get $40 cash back for each month you spend $500 on the card in the first 12 months. This will give you $480 in rewards but then subtracting the annual fee of $150 you are coming out ahead by $330.
Minimum Income: $80,000 Personal or $150,000 Household 

TD First Class Visa Infinite Card - 90,000 Points (Apply here)
This card is offering up to 90,000 points when you apply for it along with the first year annual fee waived on the primary card. The bonus is awarded as follows: 20,000 points when you make your first Purchase with your Card + Double Points on  all purchases in the first three months (up to 60,000 points) and 10,000 points for adding an additional card ($50 fee). Those 90,000 points (less the add. card fee) translate to $310 worth of travel credits for any travel booking or $400 worth of travel for bookings made via Expedia For TD.

30% Bonus Aeroplan Miles when you convert hotel loyalty program points until September 22 - Marriott is included again

We see the return of the Aeroplan hotel loyalty program conversion bonus! Last seen in March (if you don't count the Marriott bonus in summer) the hotel only transfer bonus is back and as we have now become accustomed to it is a 30% bonus. There are two programs offering more miles however, Radisson Rewards is adding in an additional 30% for 80% total and Coast Hotels Coast Rewards is once again giving 4x Aeroplen Miles. You'll have until September 22 to make any transfers into Aeroplan. This bonus offer is a good way to use up some of those orphaned hotel points you may never use if you are a frequent Aeroplan redeemer.

The great news for the spring version of this bonus is that Marriott Bonvoy is included again, well last time we still knew it as Marriott Rewards. Marriott (and its subsidiaries) have the best transfer ratio to airline programs at a rate of 3 Marriott Rewards points to 1 airline mile but they also add in 5,000 more miles when you convert 60,000 points at a time. That means with this promotion 60,000 points transferred to Aeroplan will net you 32,500 miles (20,000 miles at 3:1 + 5,000 miles from Marriott + 30% bonus). The easiest way to earn Marriott points in Canada outside of actual hotel stays is with the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card which at the time of this post is offering 50,000 points as a welcome bonus. Now chances are you won't have the points post from the card in time for this iteration of the Aeroplan transfer bonus but you can start banking on the summer bonus which typically comes around August. This is also a good time to convert points from something like the Cobalt Card to Marriott to Aeroplan!
