Lufthansa adding direct Ottawa to Frankfurt flights in 2020!

Exciting news for those living in and around Ottawa! Lufthansa has announced new direct non-stop flights between Ottawa and Frankfurt. The flights will start May 16, 2020 and operate 5x per week:
From Germany's largest hub, Lufthansa will depart for the North American destination five times a week - on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The flight LH472 will leave Frankfurt at 1.45 p.m. and arrive at its destination at 4.05 p.m. local time. The return flight LH473 will depart Ottawa at 5.50 p.m. and arrive in Frankfurt at 7.15 a.m. the next day. An Airbus A340-300 with a total of 279 seats on board will carry out the flight. The booking classes are Business Class, Premium Economy Class and Economy Class.
Seat map of the A340-300 that is being planned for this route
Air Canada has flown this route as a summer seasonal service so it is entirely possible we may not see Air Canada fly the route next year and leave it to LH. Seeing that LH is an Air Canada / Aeroplan partner it is not that huge of deal. You'll still be able to book it as an Air Canada code share and earn and redeem Aeroplan miles for the flight. What may be even better news, is that if you are a Miles & More member, this route, seeing that it is new will most likely be included in Miles & More's Monthly Mileage Bargain offers that sees redemption amounts typically cut in half (30,000 for economy and 55,000 for business vs. 60,000 and 112,000 respectively). If this is the case we should see those emerge around February of next year.  Watch for our monthly coverage of the mileage bargains later today (This month has SWISS' flight between Montreal and Zurich) and each every month to see if the Ottawa route is offered in the future.

These flights will go on sale tomorrow from Lufthansa who is a Rewards Canada travel partner! You can book your directly flights at Lufthansa.ca (this link helps support Rewards Canada)

Avianca LifeMiles - 145% Bonus when you buy LifeMiles until November 27 (Use on Air Canada as an Aeroplan alternative)

Avianca has launched a great buy miles offer for Cyber Week! It is not tiered, it is not exclusive to select blogs. This is one of the best buy miles offers yet from Avianca due to these reasons. You can buy 1,000 miles and get the 145% bonus or you can buy 200,000 miles and get the 145% bonus! The price per 1,000 miles is USD33 which means you are buying miles for US 1.35 cents pre tax.

If you have followed us for sometime you'll know this is a decent option to get Star Alliance flights on the cheap especially in business class. So what should you do? If you know that you can make your travel work and get the LifeMiles redemption(s) of your choice go ahead and buy the miles however I wouldn't buy them if you don't think you'll use them over then 3-6 months just in case another award chart devaluation comes along.

Considering Avianca is a Star Alliance member this is a great way to get a lot of miles to use for Air Canada and this is actually one program you can look at as a stop gap measure if you are looking for an Aeroplan alternative where you can use miles on Air Canada indefinitely before AC launches their own program.

Some things to consider with the buy miles option before you pull the trigger is that their call center tends to be on the less helpful side so you are better off booking award tickets online which also means you are limited to the powers of that source and they have devalued the program without notice in the past so only buy these miles if you think you will use them in the next short while.

145% Bonus LifeMiles when you buy LifeMiles online.  Full details Until Nov 27, 17

Sep 25 Update: The easiest route to Star Alliance Gold comes to an end, Air Miles Jiffy Lube bonus

Big bad news from Aegean Airlines Miles&Bonus!

News, Tips & Tricks

We have touched upon this topic a few times here on Rewards Canada but never fully detailed it. What is it? The easiest way to Star Alliance Gold Status via Aegean Airlines Miles&Bonus. It is was quite simple earn 1,000 miles for joining, earn another 3,000 with 12 months and get their Silver Status (Star Alliance Gold) add another 16,000 on top of that within 12 months of reaching Silver and boom you have Gold Miles&Bonus status which equates to Star Alliance Gold and you could keep that status just with one flight credited to Aegean every 3 years.. Rumours had starting going around last week that this was all about to change and the email from Aegean Miles&Bonus yesterday confirmed it. This easy way to keeping Star Alliance Gold status for life has come to an end. Well not really yet, the changes go into effect on November 24th so you could still potentially take advantage of this with one long haul Business Class flight credited to Miles&Bonus.

I myself started this challenge earlier this year but took a harder way, crediting some Air Canada domestic flights to Miles&Bonus, I got Miles&Bonus Silver already but don't know if I'll make it to Gold by the time the changes take place. I'm not happy about neither are thousands of others who have used this surefire method as a fast track to Star Alliance status but that is also the reason why this great method is coming to an end. As with most fast tracks, tricks and other ways to work the frequent traveller system, many of them meet their end sooner or later. Now they have made the qualification requirements harder but they are still not that hard to achieve when you compare to some other programs and if you achieve that status it is relatively easy to retain (especially if flying on Aegean or Olympic, somewhat harder if only flying Star Alliance.) You can find out all about the changes here.

American Airlines and El Al are ending their frequent flyer partnership on November 1st of this year. Find out more here.

Tunisia's Syphax Airlines is converting their Montreal-Tunis service from year round to seasonal as of Oct 30. If you have travel booked with Syphax this fall/winter you should check with them to see how they will accomodate your planned flights. (Source Airlineroute.net)

Nov 5 Update: Hilton HHonors devalued once again, Star Alliance game to win Gold Status, lots of bonuses!

As the new month progresses along there is more news and lots more bonuses to pass your way!

News, Tips & Tricks

The devaluations of programs in the travel rewards industry continue! Yesterday Hilton HHonors announced the removal of their Points+Fixed Miles option. This option gave HHonors members HHonors points and a fixed number of airline miles for each Hilton stay. It was a very useful combination for low rate or one night Hilton stays as some airline programs like Virgin Atlantic's Flying Club awarded 1,000 miles on those stays! This change takes place on January 6th and after that date HHonors will offer two Earning Style Options: Points & Points (HHonors Base Points + HHonors Bonus Points) and Points & Miles (HHonors Base Points + Variable Airline/Rail Miles). If you have Points+Fixed Miles set on your account you will be automatically switched to the Points+Variable option (which is 10 HHonors Points and 1 Miles for every US$1 spent). Complete details on the change can be found here

Star Alliance is running a game where you can win Gold Status in the Star Alliance program of your choice. The 2 fastest times from each program will win the status, so as Gary Leff states your best bet maybe to enter not with Aeroplan or MileagePlus but one of the lesser known programs that may not have as many entries. You can enter the contest here. Best of luck to you!

Huge devaluation of the United MileagePlus program - what does it mean for Canadian MileagePlus members?

So we took Friday off from the world of travel rewards and of course as Murphy's Law would have it that some really big news happened. Also as Murphy's Law would have it, the news isn't good. United Airlines' MileagePlus program has announced changes to their flight award charts, primarily for flights on their partners. This really hits home to a lot of Canadian frequent flyers as this has been the program of choice that many disgruntled Aeroplan members have moved to. Why did they move to United MileagePlus? Well before this announcement the program was actually one of the best for redemptions (one way awards were always half the cost of round trip, which Aeroplan is bringing in 2014), they didn't pass along fuel surcharges so the taxes and fees on award tickets were way less than Aeroplan and the elite status program of MileagePlus, called Premier is also very attractive. Also since United and Air Canada are Star Alliance partners many Canadian's chose MileagePlus after leaving Aeroplan since you could earn and redeem MileagePlus miles for Air Canada flights, both domestic and international. Of course, now many of those award ticket redemptions on Air Canada will cost you more MileagePlus miles.

So what are the details of the changes? First off, the new award ticket mileage requirements go into effect on February 1st, 2014 which gives you until January 31 to book at the old rates. As of February 1st United MileagePlus will essentially have two award charts, one for flying on United (and United Express etc) and one for their partners. The increases for flights on United are not out of the world and honestly could have been expected as certain award ticket levels now match those of United's main competitors. The biggest changes in the partner awards come in International Business Class and First Class redemptions. United is definitely looking at lowering the amount people redeeming their easily obtained miles for these expensive type of flights and recouping their costs for those who do (so United says). One must also see that United has reduced the miles required for several redemptions but that hardly makes up for the high percentage increaese for others (over 80% in some cases!).

Here are some key examples of changes that will affect Canadian MileagePlus members the most:
If you want to do your own comparison here are links to the MileagePlus award charts:

All we can say is ouch!! Those long haul award flights on UA's Star Alliance partners in business class and first class have sure taken a huge hit. One topic that I have not seen discussed on other frequent flyer blogs is the idea of fuel surcharges? Is it possible that United MileagePlus wants to keep its reputation of not charging fuel surcharges on partner flights simply by embedding that surcharge in this increase in miles? The reply from MileagePlus doesn't state this directly but does say that the increased cost of these flights from their partners is the main reason that the award amounts are increasing so theoretically it could mean that UA is now charging a fuel surcharge that is simply buried in the award amount. We doubt we'll ever know the true answer however!

What happens if you book a mixed airline award (one leg United, next leg Air Canada or other partner). Well it appears it will book at the higher of the two award amounts (United vs. Star Alliance award chart) if the flights are in the same class.  For example if you want to fly to Paris from Toronto via the U.S. in Business Class and leg 1 is on Air Canada (Toronto-Chicago etc) and then leg 2 is on United (Chicago etc to Paris) and you choose the fly that first leg on Air Canada in Business Class (well AC Executive) then you will pay the Star Alliance amount of 70,000 miles one way however if you book the Air Canada leg into Economy class and then fly the Transatlantic leg on UA in Business Class you'll pay the award rate of the United chart of 57,500 miles. So some creative thinking may have to go into planning mixed airline award booking with MileagePlus.

The devaluations don't stop with award tickets as there are some minor changes to Mileage Upgrades for Intra-Asia and Northern South America flights. These shouldn't affect many of Canada's MileagePlus members but should be worth noting.

Looking quickly at the new 2014 Aeroplan chart versus the 2014 MileagePlus chart, Aeroplan looks to be the better deal for flights in Business Class or First Class on Star Alliance partners other than United as you will need less miles. For example, business class on Air Canada to Europe with Aeroplan is 90 to 105,000 Miles + Fuel Surcharge and United will be 140,000 Miles with no fuel surcharge. Depending on how you earn miles you may be better off with Aeroplan with the fuel surcharge. First class to Asia? 210,000-215,000 miles with Aeroplan, 240,000-260,000 with MileagePlus. Of course the best way around this is to redeem MileagePlus miles for flights on United only but for some destinations and flights out of Canada that can be tough. We will have a follow up post with a deeper comparison of Aeroplan 2014 versus United Partner Chart 2014 to look at mileage requirement amounts and fuel surcharges.

The next question to be asked is which airlines will follow suit? Delta has already gone through a major change, American and US Airways are most likely waiting until their merger is approved or not and hopefully, crossing our fingers here, Aeroplan doesn't follow suit given that they have already announced an increase for next year in certain award ticket categories! Also holding our breath that Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan doesn't jump on this bandwagon as now with UA changes, the small Pacific Northwest program got even stronger.

Finally, if you have lots of MileagePlus miles that you have been holding onto for that premium class award ticket now is to the time redeem or to at least start planning on redeeming them before January 31st, 2014!

What are your thoughts on the changes? Are you going to stick with MileagePlus or will you perhaps give Aeroplan or another Star Alliance program a look? We'd love to hear from you, comment below!

Discounted Aeroplan Business & First Class Rewards - Limited Time Offer

Late last week news starting breaking in the Frequent Flyer Blogosphere that there were mistakes in the pricing some of Business Class and First Class award tickets from Aeroplan. Learning from previous potential mistake fares and reward tickets many people starting jumping on the bandwagon and booking this lower priced tickets. A day or so after this broke Aeroplan confirmed to one of the bloggers that this was not a mistake, rather an unadvertised reward sale that could end at anytime. I have to apologize to my readers for not posting this sooner as it seems no one has really covered this in Canada for a Canadian loyalty program! All the bloggers who covered it were from the U.S. with predominantly U.S. audiences. Well, fret no more here is my post for the Canadian market.

Essentially the sale sees Business Class award tickets going for the price of Economy Class Award tickets and First Class tickets going for the price of Business Class tickets. For example some select routes to Asia in business class are 75,000 Miles instead of the usual 100,000, to Europe it is 60,000 instead of 90,000 and Australia is 80,000 instead of 100,000. For fun I checked Calgary to Hong Kong in mid January and there it was 75,000 Miles for business class.

If you were planning on booking any Business Class or First Class rewards your best bet is to do it sooner then later so that you can save yourself some miles (kind of makes up for the increased fees due to the fuel surcharges now charged Star Alliance rewards)
