Marriott New Hotel Openings in Canada for 2020 - 14 hotels in the works including the W Toronto

With over 7,000 hotels Marriott Hotels is one of the largest hotel companies in the world and they are one of the biggest in Canada. The chain comprises of a whopping 30 brands ranging from mid-level budget locations to high end luxury resorts.

Marriott is looking to add no less than 14 more hotels to their Canadian portfolio in 2020. This is about half the amount they opened in 2019 and will bring their portfolio of hotels in Canada to nearly 300.

To the best of our knowledge this is largest growth out of any of the major hotel chains as IHG comes close with 13 new openings.

These are the hotels and their anticipated opening dates (of course these are subject to change):

I would say the most anticipated hotel this year is the W Toronto, which according to Marriott's site is slated to open in June however nights are not bookable until September 1.

The W Toronto will have 255 rooms on 9 floors and is located in the Yorkville neighbourhood at 90 Bloor Street East. The hotel will open as a Category 6 hotel in the Marriot Bonvoy program meaning you'll require 50,000 points per night at the standard level (40,000 off peak/60,000 peak). This unfortunately means it will be out of reach for the annual free night award that comes with the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card - however the welcome bonus on the card is 50,000 points so that could be utilized for one night at this new location. There is availabilty every night in October - albeit at a mix of Off Peak, Standard and Peak:

On the night that is only 40,000 points you would be redeeming for a room that costs $490+taxes which means you would be getting 1.225 cents per point and seeing that we value Marriott Bonvoy points at a minimum of 1 cent per point you can see this would be a good redemption. On 50,000 point nights the going rate seems to be $519 so it still a little over 1 cent per point.

I also want to note that I find the Fairfield Inn in Kitimat as the most interesting of the new hotel builds. Why so? Because it is a modular build! It is a 119 room 5 storey hotel that is being built in modular sections by Horizon North Logistics. Here is a timelapse video of how they built another modular hotel

The hotel giant has also recently opened up five hotels in the past few months:
Remember to take advantage of all the possible Marriott Bonvoy bonus points offers that are available if you plan on staying at any of these new Marriott hotels or any other Marriott hotels for that matter! You can find all the promotions listed on our Marriott Bonvoy Bonus Points page

Are you excited about any of the new Marriot hotels opening up this year? Are there any locations or brands you'd like to see in your neck of the woods? Let us know in the comments below.

Summary of global hotel systemwide bonus points promotions – February Edition

Here is your monthly update of all the global hotel bonus points promotions that are available! One of the easiest ways to rack up lots of hotel points is to take advantage of these systemwide bonuses that come from many of the big chain programs and also from the lesser known programs. In fact, right now it should be rare for you NOT to earn a bonus. Unless you are staying at a boutique hotel or perhaps an independent hotel most other hotels out there have a bonus. So take advantage of it! These systemwide bonuses simply require you to register beforehand and they do not affect hotel pricing as long as you book a point eligible rate which are most rates out there. Of course booking through a third party site like Expedia or Rocketmiles does not count as most chains only award points on bookings that are made directly with them. Without further ado here are all the current promotions that are available to everyone:

Tim Hortons Tims Rewards being revamped - changes coming on February 26

Less than a year after it was launched Tim Hortons Tims Rewards is being revamped. The struggling coffee and donut chain was banking on having the rewards program help it regain some traction in our market. With over 7.5 million members the loyalty program grew quickly to be one of the largest in Canada and yet it doesn't seem to be working for them.

The program as we know it right now was pretty simple, make 7 purchases and get one item free. That free item was limited to a brewed coffee, tea or baked good with a typical maximum value of $2.00. You could hold up to 5 rewards at once in your account and they were valid for only 120 days.

The new program is moving to points based system which really only affects the redemption side. The reason why is that you will earn 10 points per purchase - not per dollar like one of Tim's biggest competitors. So it doesn't matter if you spend $0.50 (the minimum to earn the points) or $20 - you'll only get 10 points. So the function of earning hasn't changed at all. The move to a points system however is allowing Tim's to give its customers more redemption options rather than just a brewed coffee, tea or baked good. For those wondering - if that's all you want to redeem for, the program hasn't changed as it will take 70 points (ie 7 visits) to get a brewed coffee, tea or baked good. (dream donuts, bagels etc.) So this is good news - they haven't devalued the program! That 70 point redemption level is only one of 14 reward levels the new program will have. All the levels haven't been revealed yet however we do know the lowest level will be 50 points (5 visits) for a classic donut or cookie. You will also be able to redeem for breakfast items, lunch items, Iced Capps and more.

You must register your reward level
Unlike other programs where you can choose what you want to redeem your points for at time of purchase the revamped Tims Rewards program will require you to register for the reward level you want. For example, if you are registered to receive rewards at 70 points and want to redeem for a 50 point item you'll have to go into your Tims Rewards account (online or via the app) and change your registered reward level. They state they have this to make a quick and seamless in-restaurant experience. I see it as being a big in the butt. People who sign up for the program or already members aren't going to read all the details of the programs. They are simply going to go to store hoping to redeem points for something at 50 points and won't be able to as their account will be set to 70 points. as that is the default level. I see this being a big issue with the new program and they will have lots of unhappy customers at the till wanting to redeem for a sandwich and they can't. This is probably one of the most convoluted redemption requirements I have ever seen from a loyalty program.

Existing rewards and visits
When the program switches over to points they will give each member 10 points for visits that are already in their accounts and 80 points for each reward that is stored in their accounts. This is nice move to give an extra 10 points per reward.

Expiring Points
Points held in your Tims Rewards account will expire 12 months after they are earned. You may ask how can they do this when Ontario and Quebec have laws against expiring points. Well in Ontario the law allows programs whose reward values are below $50 to still expire. Seeing that Tims Rewards redemption options range from below a dollar to maybe five or six dollars they can expire their points.

Double Points to celebrate launch
To celebrate the launch of the revamped program Tims is offering 2x points between February 26 and March 18, 2020.

You can learn more about the new Tims Rewards program here.

So what do you think Rewards Canada Community? It the new program going to change any of your habits? Will it make you visit Tims more? Let us know in the comments below!

Miles & More Mileage Bargains - Big mileage discounts on flights to Europe out of Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto & Vancouver

As we do each month we bring you the latest set Miles & More "Meilenschnaeppchen" or Mileage Bargain discounted mileage awards. This month the offers sees many more cities than usual - and an airlines that we haven't seen on the list in ages! Those airlines are Condor and you can get in on their flights out of Calgary and Vancouver and also SWISS' flight out of Vancouver is in there as well. The other cities included are Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver. All of these last four have direct service with Lufthansa - the Ottawa route being the newest which actually launches on May 16 (see our post here).

This month's offers:

With this month's offer you can redeem Miles & More miles for round trip business class tickets on the routes listed above for only 55,000 miles. This is just over a 50% discount off the normal Business Class award ticket price of 112,000 miles. For premium economy class it is a straight 50% discount from 80,000 miles down to 40,000 miles as is economy at 30,000 miles instead of 60,000 miles.

Normally at this point we go into our discussion on how you can get more Miles & More miles by converting Marriott Bonvoy points to the program. However as we reported previously all hotel points transfers to Miles & More have been suspended. That means if you want to take advantage of the offers this month you'll have to just make sure you have all the miles in your account.

Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for February - These cards provide some of the best value out of their welcome bonuses

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of February 2020! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards that have very good acquisition (welcome/sign up) offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the just sign up bonus, but when some of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when you grab them strictly for the sign up rewards. This month we see two first year free cards on the list!

Once again we see no changes this month from January although we should give an honorable mention to the CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Privilege Card as it can push a decent value of over $500 but don't play your redemptions right and you could end of with a value of only $1. With many offers ending this month or early in March we should see this list change next month!

Remember as well that you will find this list smack dab in the middle of the Rewards Canada homepage for easy reference!

Here are our top 5 credit card sign up offers for February (in order of welcome bonus value, calculated as minimum mile/points value minus annual fee)

Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card - 50,000 Points (Apply here)
No changes to this card means it stays put on the list The 50,000 points, awarded after spending $1,500 on the card in three months are worth at least $500 in our minds which means after subtracting the annual fee you are coming out ahead by $380. In reality you can pull even more value out of the card (into four figures) as we outlined in our post A look at how The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card provides huge value!  Don't forget you get an annual free night with the card as well on the card anniversary date!
Minimum Income: N/A

Alaska Airlines World Elite Mastercard - 30,000 Miles (Apply here)
This card offers a welcome bonus of 30,000 miles when you spend $1,000 on the card in the first three months of having it. This is one of the easiest bonuses to achieve and this card is one of the most churnable in Canada. There are really no problems in getting it 2-4 times in one year alone! Those 30,000 miles are worth no less than $330 when redeeming for economy class flights and just go up from there like the TD Aeroplan card.
Minimum Income: $80,000 Personal or $150,000 Household

National Bank of Canada World Elite Mastercard - $480 Cash Back (Apply here)
This card's offer hasn't changed in a few months so it retains its spot in the list. You will get $40 cash back for each month you spend $500 on the card in the first 12 months. This will give you $480 in rewards but then subtracting the annual fee of $150 you are coming out ahead by $330.
Minimum Income: $80,000 Personal or $150,000 Household

BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard - 3,000 Miles (Apply here)
This card offers a welcome bonus of 3,000 AIR MILES Reward Miles, split between 1,000 on first purchase and 2,000 more when you spend $3,000 within 3 months of getting the card. The annual fee of $120 is waived in the first year as well meaning these miles come to you at no cost other than card spend. Those 3,000 miles are worth $330 at a minimum when redeeming towards travel.
Minimum Income: $80,000 Personal or $150,000 Household

If you went for all these cards you ultimately could end up with anywhere from $1,700 to over $3,000 in travel value. However even if you only take on one or two you are helping your travel budget significantly at no cost other than regular credit card spend. We don't really recommend getting all five in one month unless you know you can meet the minimum spend for them all at once, rather you'd want to pick one or two right now, perhaps another next month and so on.

Earn double points on Hyatt stays starting with your second stay with World of Hyatt's Bonus Journeys promotion

World of Hyatt released their first systemwide promotion of the year today. The offer is a simple double points bonus that kicks in on your second stay during the promotional period. Double points offers are great for those longer and/or more expensive stays when compared to flat rate bonus points offers so be sure to keep this in mind if you are planning any long or expensive stays. Of course you'll still want to register for it even if you only have two one night stays planned as you should be making all efforts to earn the most points possible at all times. There is any additional portion of the promotion that is open to U.S. Hyatt cardholders which I know some of our readers do carry - that offers 1,500 Bonus Points with each qualifying stay, starting with the second, that includes a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night.

Offer details:
2x World of Hyatt Points with each stay starting with your second qualifying stay at over 1,000 participating Hyatt Hotels worldwide. Full details, online registration and booking (Registration is required) Register by Mar 31 for stays Feb 15 - May 15, 20

Making the news over the past 24 hours is Edmonton based Ultra Low Cost Carrier Flair Airlines. Why? Simply from their umlimited travel pass promotion. Called the 'Go Travel Pass' the new flight pass from Flair Airlines offers unlimited travel to anywhere they fly for 90 days. There are two options, the low cost option for $499+taxes and fees where you still have pay for add ons and luggage, have black out dates and can't fly on Friday or Saturdays. The more expensive pass option at $699+taxes and fees includes 1 checked bag (add ons are still extra) no black out dates and you can fly on Fridays and Saturdays:

The passes are good for flights between February 13 and May 13 and there are no extensions beyond those dates. What the promotion doesn't state is an end date to actually purchasing a pass.

This reminds me of when Air Canada had an unlimited North America flight pass back in 2005 and one well known FlyerTalker from B.C. took advantage of it to fly almost every day for a month as those flights earned Aeroplan miles and he collected over 1 million of them during that month! Air Canada announced today that they now accept Paypal for purchasing tickets in Canada. Find out more here.
Air Canada has introduced a new payment option for customers by enabling them to use PayPal when purchasing tickets online at aircanada.com in Canada. The popular online payment system offers a secure and convenient means to buy tickets, with customers able to pay for their flights with their preferred payment method – bank account, credit cards or Visa Debit card – linked to their PayPal account.

"Air Canada's strategy is to continually provide customers the opportunity to make their purchase using their preferred method of payment. We are therefore pleased to announce our agreement with PayPal, the popular online payment system that is secure, fast and convenient to use. Having now made PayPal available for ticket sales in Canada, we will look to expand the program to other markets as opportunities arise," said Keith Wallis, Senior Director, Payments and Distribution, at Air Canada.

"We're excited to add Air Canada—our first airline partner in Canada—to a growing fleet of airlines across the globe that leverage our global e-commerce platform to expand their reach," said Paul Parisi, PayPal Canada President. "Our two companies share the same goal to provide a great checkout experience for travellers, so they spend less time buying tickets online and more time enjoying their trip." Image via Air Canada
