As Air Transat does not have their own frequent flyer program (maybe they'll be integrated into Aeroplan should the Air Canada takeover finalize) your best bet is to use proprietary credit card programs to earn and burn points for this flight. Learn more about proprietary credit card programs here. (Source Routesonline) Image via Air Transat

WestJet confirms their first flagship business class lounge will open in Calgary in summer 2020

For several years now WestJet has made it known that they plan on opening and operating their own business class lounges in key cities across their network. This has all played out as WestJet made the transition to an airline that offers a true business class on their Boeing 787 Dreamliners and move to a true premium product on their 737s. We know that WestJet's current plans are to open nine of their own lounges across Canada and in Europe. I believe Paris is in the cards and I wouldn't be surprised if London Gatwick is also part of the mix seeing that is WestJet's number destination in U.K. and Europe.

Earlier this year, WestJet took over the Chinook Lounge in Calgary's Concourse A so that they could have their first pseudo-lounge (see our March post WestJet has unofficially opened their first lounge in Calgary)  This was done more so for the training of their employees and to also find what works and doesn't work for their passengers prior to opening of the new Calgary flagship lounge in summer 2020, which of course got its official announcement today:

WestJet today announced that work has begun on its first proprietary flagship lounge at the Calgary International Airport (YYC).
As the airline with the most departures, destinations and seats from Calgary, the construction of the lounge underscores WestJet's ongoing commitment to growing its premium presence and guest experience.

"As WestJet continues its accelerated journey to becoming a global network carrier our new flagship lounge in Calgary will give top-tier WestJet Rewards members, Business cabin guests and select partner travellers a home within our home in Calgary," said d'Arcy Monaghan, WestJet's Vice-President, Loyalty. "This lounge will showcase WestJet's award-winning hospitality, refined style, elevated products and premium experience our guests have been enjoying with the launch of our new Dreamliner."

Working in partnership with the Calgary Airport Authority, WestJet's new lounge will be located near Concourse B to conveniently serve guests travelling from Concourses A and B in the Domestic Terminal, and from Concourse D in the International Terminal.

"Whether guests are starting a journey, or connecting, this premium lounge will elevate their experience," said Rob Palmer, CFO and Vice-President, The Calgary Airport Authority. "YYC is already proud to be home to WestJet, its Dreamliner hub, and now we're excited to welcome this flagship lounge at our airport. Congratulations to WestJet."

Designed in partnership with Gensler, world-class design and architectural firm, the lounge will seamlessly blend contemporary interior design with refined mountain living. This custom Canadian-inspired space brings together exceptional local food and beverage, along with business amenities designed to keep travellers connected. Once complete, it will be a place for guests to work, relax, rejuvenate and collaborate in comfort and style, reflective of WestJet's ongoing premiumization of its Boeing fleet and award-winning hospitality and service.

WestJet flagship lounge is scheduled to open in late summer 2020. Platinum, Gold and Silver WestJet Rewards members with complimentary lounge access benefits, along with guests travelling in the Business cabin, will be among the first to enjoy the new space.
WestJet's 787 Business Class Pod

What is unknown at this time is if WestJet will follow Air Canada's lead and only have the lounge available to their guests or if they will open it up to Priority Pass and other lounge membership programs. Personally I don't think they will knowing how many WestJet travelers alone will use the lounge (and their partners like KLM) just as we see with Air Canada's Maple Leaf lounges. There is a chance the Chinook Lounge, which WestJet took over, will revert back to a third party lounge once the new lounge opens in which case it would most definitely be part of Priority Pass and other lounge programs. I have reached out to the Calgary Airport Authority to see if this will be the case or not.

Are you looking forward to this new lounge? Let us know in the comments below!

Alaska Airlines Buy Miles Bonus – 40% Bonus Miles until October 31, some get 50% until October 8

Alaska Airlines has brought back a bonus for buying Mileage Plan miles! Right now you will get up to a 50% bonus when you buy 30,000-40,000 or more miles. It does appear only some members are being targeted for the 50% for one week only whereas the rest of us can max out at 40%

At 50% you’ll definitely want to consider buying the miles as you are buying Mileage Plan Miles under U.S. 2 cents a piece. Canadians will have to pay GST/HST on the amount since Points.com, who processes the transaction is a Canadian company.

Seeing that you can redeem miles for premium class flights on British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Hainan, Korean Air and more, there are lots of options for you to use these miles. Remember it only takes 70,000 Mileage Plan miles to fly Cathay Pacific First Class from North America to Asia and that flight alone will cost a lot more than US$1,478.13!

Here is one example of a redemption you could use this bonus offer on. Flying Japan Airlines and Korean Air business class from Vancouver to Tokyo:

Visit Japan in April for a week – 112,500 miles round trip for business class + $102.70 in fees/taxes. To purchase 120,000 miles (the closest amount at 50% to get these flights) would cost you just over US$2,300, add in the fees and you are looking at ~$2,400 To pay cash for the same flights you would be looking at over $4,000.

Remember Alaska has set in place a maximum amount of miles you can buy in a year if you don’t hold MVP status.  Non-Elite members can only buy 150,000 miles per year now.  MVP, MVP Gold, and MVP Gold 75K member are not subjected to this limitation. Seeing that Alaska has never offered more than a 50% bonus this is definitely the time to buy if you were targeted to get that amount.

Offer details
Receive up to 50% Bonus Mileage Plan Miles when you buy miles online. Buy miles here Until Oct 31, 19

Here is the 40% bonus
Buy 10,000 – 19,000 miles, get a 20% bonus
Buy 20,000 – 29,000 miles, get a 30% bonus
Buy 30,000 – 60,000 miles, get a 40% bonus

Here is the 50% bonus (until Oct 8)
Buy 10,000 – 19,000 miles, get a 20% bonus
Buy 20,000 – 39,000 miles, get a 35% bonus
Buy 40,000 – 60,000 miles, get a 50% bonus

October 2 Update: Alaska Airlines & American Airlines gut partnership, more confirmed American Express Multiplier Locations & get elite status with a paid airline membership

Alaska Airlines and American Airlines are gutting a major portion of their frequent flyer partnership. Effective March 1, 2020 you will not be able to redeem miles from either program for award flights on the other airlines, ie redeeming Mileage Plan miles for flights on American. You will however still be able to earn miles, albeit in a limited fashion, on the other airline's flights. Lounge access for each airline's elite or lounge club members will remain intact as well. Learn more about these changes here.
 What's changing, effective March 1, 2020:
  • You will no longer earn Mileage Plan miles on American Airlines international flights.
  • You will no longer be able to redeem miles for award travel on American Airlines domestic or international flights.
What's not changing:
  • You'll continue to earn a mile for every mile flown on eligible domestic American Airlines flights with an Alaska Airlines (AS) flight number to select key destinations in the Midwest and eastern US and Canada.
  • Alaska Lounge members can still access over 50 Admirals Club lounges worldwide when flying on an Alaska Airlines or American Airlines flight.

We had another good sized update to our Confirmed Cobalt Multipliers resource! We should probably rename it to Confirmed American Express Multiplier seeing that the AIR MILES Platinum Card will soon offer 1 Mile for $5 on Eats & Drinks and the fact the Platinum Card from American Express earns 3x points on dining. This time we give thanks to FM for a big list of Vancouver locations, one Calgary restaurant and some more travel multipliers. Visit the feature here.
Here's what was added:
Chambar (YVR)
Japanese Village (YYC)
Colony Bar (YVR)
Incognito Coffee (YVR)
Noodlebox, Gabi & Jules, Fresh Slice Pizza, Elephant Garden, Ugly Dumpling, True Confections, Kissa Tanto, Grapes and Soda, The Farmer's apprentice (all YVR)
Cathay Pacific
Alaska Airlines
Pinnacle Hotel

Over on our global site, Frequent Flyer Bonuses, we highlighted a paid membership portion of TAP Portugal's Miles&Go called Club TAP Miles&Go. This membership club has you pay an annual fee and in return in you receive bonus miles (redeemable & status) each month plus extra miles on flights (TAP does fly from Toronto) and if you buy the Platinum level you'll receive Silver Elite status which you could then use to try to status match with other airlines. Find out more here.

Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for October - These cards provide some of the best value out of their welcome bonuses

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of October! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards that have very good acquisition (sign up) offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the just sign up bonus, but when most or all of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when you grab them strictly for the sign up rewards.  This month we once again have 3 cards that have no annual fee in the first year and two cards with an annual fee in the first year.

There are no changes to the list for this month.

Here are our top 5 credit card sign up offers for October (in order of welcome bonus value)

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card - 40,000 Miles (Apply here)
TD has come out with the best ever offer for this card and it is first year free so that means up to 35,000 of the 40,000 miles would come to you at no cost other then spending on the card. The bonus is awarded as follows: 15,000 Aeroplan Miles when you make your first Purchase with your Card + Double Aeroplan Miles on all purchases in the first three months (up to 20,000 miles) and 5,000 miles for adding an additional card ($50 fee). Depending on how you redeem those Aeroplan miles should be worth no less than $400 but more likely closer to $800 or more! In fact if you take the per mile value from our post from late July this welcome bonus would be worth $2,000 or more.
Minimum Income: $60,000 Personal or $100,000 Household

Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card - 50,000 Points (Apply here)
This is the first card on the list that has an annual fee right of the bat but the sign up bonus and other benefits more than make up for it. The 50,000 points, awarded after spending $1,500 on the card in three months are worth at least $500 in our minds which means after subtracting the annual fee you are coming out ahead by $380. In reality you can pull even more value out of the card (into four figures) as we outlined in our post A look at how The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card provides huge value!
Minimum Income: N/A

National Bank of Canada World Elite Mastercard - $480 Cash Back (Apply here)
This the second card on the list that has an annual fee that isn't waived, however the sign up bonus and other benefits provide some big value over that annual fee. You will get $40 cash back for each month you spend $500 on the card in the first 12 months. This will give you $480 in rewards but then subtracting the annual fee of $150 you are coming out ahead by $330.
Minimum Income: $80,000 Personal or $150,000 Household

http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=rePwQEjA0OI&offerid=373814.23&type=3&subid=0TD First Class Visa Infinite Card - 90,000 Points (Apply here)
This card is offering up to 90,000 points when you apply for it along with the first year annual fee waived on the primary card. The bonus is awarded as follows: 20,000 points when you make your first Purchase with your Card + Double Points on  all purchases in the first three months (up to 60,000 points) and 10,000 points for adding an additional card ($50 fee). Those 90,000 points (less the add. card fee) translate to $310 worth of travel credits for any travel booking or $400 worth of travel for bookings made via Expedia For TD.
Minimum Income: $60,000 Personal or $100,000 Household

BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard - 3,000 Miles  (Apply here)
This almost best ever sign up bonus for an AIR MILES co-branded card continues on our Top 5 sign up list thanks to its 3,000 miles sign up bonus (worth ~$300 or more) and no annual fee in the first year!  Even if you aren't a fan of AIR MILES the fact you can get 3,000 miles and them use them as cash rewards for no cost to you should be enough to go out and get this card. Please note: new Collectors have Miles automatically deposited into their Dream Account, not their Cash account.
Minimum Income: $80,000 Personal or $150,000 Household

If you went for all these cards you ultimately could end up with anywhere from $1,700 to over $3,000 in travel value. However even if you only take on one or two you are helping your travel budget significantly at no cost other than regular credit card spend. We don't really recommend getting all five in one month unless you know you can meet the minimum spend for them all at once, rather you'd want to pick one or two right now, perhaps another next month and so on.
