A closer look at the newly refreshed Platinum Card from American Express

The Platinum Card from American Express is now three weeks into its refresh and for the most part the changes have been well received.  Back on February 13th we detailed the refresh that saw two changes come to one of the best high end premium cards in Canada. The first change was the points earning structure and the second change is the introduction of the metal card that The Platinum Card has seen in other countries. The beauty of these changes was that they were brought in without changing any of the card's other benefits nor with an increase to the annual fee.

Now let's take a closer look as to why The Platinum Card from American Express is one of the best high end premium cards for Canadians:

Points Earning
This was where the first major change happened with the refresh of this card. Prior to February 13 the card earned 1.25 points on all eligible purchases made on the card. Now the cards earns up to 3x points depending on the category:
  • 3 points for every $1 in Card purchases on eligible dining in Canada
  • 2 points for every $1 in Card purchases on eligible travel
  • 1 point for every $1 in all other Card purchases
As you can see two categories have increased earn while all other spending has gone down. The 3x points for dining is great and just like the Cobalt card, American Express has to legally word it 'in Canada' as that is all they can control but as long as a restaurant outside of Canada codes properly as dining you will earn the 3x points (this has been confirmed from Amex). I would recommend reading the following for additional details on dining outside of Canada:
The other increase is that the card now earns 2 points per dollar on travel spending - this should be global like the Gold Rewards Card and is a welcome increase. Here are examples of the 2x points already posting on some flights I booked:

The remainder of the spending does unfortunately drop to 1 point per dollar. I did a lot of shopping on my Platinum card to earn the 1.25 points where other cards don't have category bonuses and I will now have to reevaluate that spending.

I was told by American Express that they did lots of research and their numbers do show most spending on the Platinum Card is for dining and travel so for most people this should be a boon. Even if you don't have other cards and get 1 point per dollar, when you average out with your other spending you will most likely still be getting 1.25 points per dollar or more.

A deeper evaluation of this earn shows that the 3 points per dollar is also like earning 3 Aeroplan Miles or 3 British Airways Avios per dollar since Membership Rewards points transfer to those programs 1:1! That's huge and remember Amex typically offers a bonus once per year for transferring to British Airways so that 3 per dollar could go as high as 3.75 or higher depending on the bonus! No other cards can get you that many Aeroplan Miles or Avios on dining spend. For the 2 points per dollar on travel, this is the same as the Gold Rewards Card which means you can earn 2 Aeroplan Miles or Avios on travel spending, once again the highest earn for all around travel for those programs in Canada.

Points Redemption
When you redeem Membership Rewards points for their great Use Point for Purchases Travel option it means you'll be getting a 3% return on Dining, 2% return on Travel and a 1% return on all other purchases. Remember you only have to redeem as little as 1,000 points - you don't have to wait until you have the full amount of points and you can redeem up to 12 months AFTER the purchase posts to your account!

Related: Membership Rewards Use Points for Purchases explained

The points can also be used for the Membership Rewards Fixed Points for Travel option that works like traditional frequent flyer programs with set point amount for tickets.

Related:  A closer look at the Membership Rewards Fixed Points Travel program

Of course there many other redemption options like the aforementioned transfers to frequent travel partners. Currently you can convert Membership Rewards points earned on The Platinum Card to the following partners:

You can also choose to redeem points for Ticketmaster & Amazon purchases, merchandise, gift cards and a whole lot more!

Benefits
The card is stacked with a lot of benefits and features. In fact - the last time the card was refreshed in 2012 (read our post from June 2012  to see what happened then!) and at that time Amex went out to their members asking what they wanted in the card and points was not the number one topic - it was benefits and experiences! Those benefits continue on today!

$200 Annual Travel Credit
You get this credit right when you get the card and then it renews each year on your card anniversary. What is it? It's $200 you can use towards any single travel booking of $200 or more charged to  your Platinum Card through Platinum Card Travel Service or American Express Travel Online.

Fine Hotels & Resorts

Fine Hotels and Resorts provides complimentary benefits at over 1,000 extraordinary hotel and resort properties around the world. Benefits are as follows and may vary based on the location.

Not only do you get these benefits there are times of the year  where you can book a certain amount of nights, 3 for example and you get one more night free.

Global Lounge Collection
From years of talking with our readers, one of their favourite benefits from The Platinum Card is the Global Lounge Collection. The card gets you access to over 1,200 airport lounges around the globe and thanks to its top end Priority Pass membership you'll also get dining credits at select airport restaurants!

Hotel Benefits
The Platinum Card provides you with automatic hotel elite status from four major hotel loyalty programs. Gold with Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors and Radisson Rewards as well as Jade status with Shangri-La Hotels Golden Circle.  To get these status levels without the card would take thousands of dollars in actual hotel night stays - so it is a huge benefit!

And a hint from us.... you can then parlay those four statuses into even more status:
Get elite status with ten hotel reward programs, one airline and one cruise program with The Platinum Card from American Express

Car Rental Benefits

Similar to the hotel elite benefits, the card provides Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Five Star membership and Avis Preferred membership. The Hertz membership is an elite status level while the Avis membership is the same as what anyone can get albeit the Platinum Card discount code may provide larger discounts than without it.

Other benefits you'll also find on the card are Toronto Pearson International Airport benefits like valet service, discounted parking and priority security, Preferred Golf Membership, a strong insurance package and more.

As you can see there is lot to The Platinum Card from American Express, in fact we could probably write an entire novel detailing each and every benefit but to keep this post to reasonable length we've only highlighted the most popular benefits of the card. Some may wince when they first see the annual fee of $699 but when take into account everything the card provides you can quickly see how you can pull way more value out of the card than the $699. Another benefit of the card that I myself like? Additional cards are only $175 each and provide the majority of the benefits listed above like the Priority Pass membership and hotel elite status benefits to each additional card holder. Pretty good deal for only $175!

Finally here's the nitty gritty on the card:

March 8 Update: Hilton introduces a new brand - Signia Hilton, Best Western buys WorldHotels & decent SWISS Business Class offers out of Montreal

Two weeks ago Hilton Hotels announced yet another new hotel brand under their umbrella - Signia Hilton. The new chain of hotels will be targeted towards meetings and events "With a minimum of 500 guest rooms and 75 square feet per key of flexible meetings and events space" at each location. Touted as a global brand, Signia will launch with several locations in the U.S.. No word on if any are planned for Canada but with a minimum 500 guests rooms if they did launch here it would most likely only be in Toronto or Vancouver. Find out more here

Meanwhile Best Western Hotels purchased WorldHotels in February. This is a very interesting purchase as BW is not known for high end or luxurious hotels and now they will be adding over 300 of them to their portfolio!
WorldHotels will maintain its distinctive personality and individuality while benefiting from Best Western's robust and scalable E-Commerce platform, strong partnerships, award-winning loyalty program, effective sales and marketing support, global distribution network, and powerful revenue engines.
The good news with this is the WorldHotels brand will be part of the Best Western Rewards program which is very popular with many Canadians and will present some (potentially) great redemption options, WorldHotels no longer has any affiliated hotels in our country but lots of great locations around the globe. They themselves tried to run their own loyalty program called PeakPoints a few years back and that program essentially failed leaving only their frequent flyer partnerships as a way to earn loyalty rewards for stays at their locations. Find out more here

Miles & More Mileage Bargains - Save up to 50% on Lufthansa award tickets between Montreal and Europe for July & August!

As we do each month we bring you the latest set Miles & More "Meilenschnaeppchen" or Mileage Bargain discounted mileage awards. This month the offers are for flying out of Montreal on Lufthansa in either business or economy class. Please note that this should be the second last month of business class pricing out at 55,000 miles as Miles & More is boosting the standard 105,000 miles requirement to 112,000 come May 9th.  We aren't sure if they will still discount by 50,000 miles or some amount at that time. Economy class will remain at a 60,000 miles base amount.

Montreal
Lufthansa Economy or Business Class
Book by March 31 for travel between July 1 - August 15 , 2019

With this month's offer you can redeem Miles & More miles for round trip business class tickets on Lufthansa for only 55,000 miles. This is nearly a 50% discount off the normal award ticket price of 105,000 miles. Remember however Miles & More charges some major fees for redeeming miles on these flights so be sure you also check what a revenue ticket costs however remember this is for business class so even several hundreds of dollars in fees along with 55,000 miles could be the savings you are looking for.

Here are some of the Business Class offers this month:

You can also choose to redeem 30,000 miles for round-trip Economy Class Lufthansa flights from Montreal to Europe. This is a 50% discount off the normal Economy Class award ticket price of 60,000 miles.

Here is an example of some of them:

Short on Miles & More miles? Your best bet is to convert Marriott Bonvoy points to Miles & More on a 3:1 basis plus you'll earn 5,000 bonus miles when you convert 60,000 points at a time. That means 75,000 points is all it would take to get one of the economy class tickets if you don't have any Miles & More miles to your name.

If you don't have any Marriott Rewards Points you can get close to amount required to redeem for the tickets by grabbing some credit cards! How so? As we always mention in this post you can boost your Miles & More account with the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card to top off your account. Currently the card comes with a 60,000 point sign up bonus when you spend $1,500 on the card and then you could also grab the Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card as it also has a 60,000 point sign up bonus and then you would ultimately be able to have 120,000 points not including what is earned on spending. Of course timing of getting the card(s) now, spending and getting the points will likely not happen for this month but it sets you up for future offers.  Need to grab two tickets for an itinerary? You could choose to get one Marriott card for yourself and one for your partner or spouse.

Summary of global hotel systemwide bonus points promotions - March Edition

One of the easiest ways to rack up lots of hotel points is to take advantage of the systemwide bonuses that come from many of the big chain programs and also from the lesser known programs. In fact, right now it should be rare for you NOT to earn a bonus. Unless you are staying at a boutique hotel or perhaps an independent hotel most other hotels out there have a bonus. So take advantage of it! These systemwide bonuses simply require you to register beforehand and they do not affect hotel pricing as long as you book a point eligible rate which are most rates out there. Of course booking through a third party site like Expedia or Rocketmiles does not count as most chains only award points on bookings that are made directly with them.  Without further ado here are all the current promotions that are available to everyone:

March 7 Update: HSBC World Elite MC first year free + 30K points offer, a new king of programs for crediting car rentals to & Air France flash sale Canada to Paris from $735

Last year HSBC introduced their World Elite Mastercard to the Canadian public. Prior to the launch of this card their cards were almost exclusive to their banking customers only but they realized the money they could make by making a more accessible product. When the card did launch it had a pretty amazing sign up offer of 75,000 points and first year free. Unfortunately that offer has been long gone but they do have another FYF offer right now if you do want to try the card. It currently comes with a 30,000 point welcome bonus on top of the FYF. Find out more here. You can also read our review of the card here to find out more about what the card offers.

If you are travelling to or via Seattle over the next couple of weeks and were planning on visiting Amex's Centurion Lounge thanks to the Platinum Card you'll have to look for another lounge! The lounge will be temporarily closed for renovations starting on March 11. FYI Priority Pass does have access to two lounges at SEA. (Source American Express)

Speaking of Priority Pass - Members now have access to Gameway video game lounges at Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport. Members get 2 hours of access, two snacks and one drink. (Source TPG)

Over on my global site FFB, I point out that there seems to be a new king of airline programs to credit your car rentals to - as good as Aeroplan, British Airways and other programs have been and still are to credit car rentals to I believe Avianca LifeMiles trumps them all right now with their offers. I know a lot of you buy LifeMiles during their frequent bonus promotions and here you have another way to add miles to those accounts. Read my article here

Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for March - nearly $2,000 in travel rewards with these cards

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of March! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards that have very good acquisition (sign up) offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the just sign up bonus, but when most or all of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when you grab them strictly for the sign up rewards.  This month we're back to adding one annual fee card into the mix along with four cards that offer first year free waivers.

Three new cards are in the mix this month which is also one of the richest ever with all the card offers combined coming in at nearly $2,000 in travel value. TD's big push for their cards this month see two of their cards added, the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card and the TD First Class Visa Infinite Cards and we also see the addition of the Marriott Bonvoy American Express card! We added it even with HSBC's  first year free offer for their World Elite Mastercard but that is only worth $150 and TD's Platinum Travel offering 25,000 points with first year free but that has only a $125 value. Both of which are  much less than the Marriott Bonvoy Card even with its annual fee!

Here are our top 5 credit card sign up offers for March (in alphabetical order)

BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard - 3,000 Miles  (Apply here)
The best ever sign up bonus for an AIR MILES co-branded card continues on our Top 5 sign up list thanks to its 3,000 miles sign up bonus (worth ~$300 or more) and no annual fee in the first year! Add in a free companion fare when you redeem for flights and the value jumps even higher (click here to read a first hand account of using this voucher!). Even if you aren't a fan of AIR MILES the fact you can get 3,000 miles and them use them as cash rewards for no cost to you should be enough to go out and get this card. Please note: new Collectors have Miles automatically deposited into their Dream Account, not their Cash account. Minimum Income: $80,000 Personal or $150,000 Household

BMO BMO World Elite Mastercard - 35,000 Points  (Apply here)
The card offers a 35,000 point sign up bonus that is worth $250 in travel and since the card is first year free right now (they bill you $150 and then rebate after several months) that means your $250 in travel is free and yes you even get the LoungeKey access and 4 lounge passes included in that first year free.  Minimum Income: $80,000 Personal or $150,000 Household

Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card - 60,000 Points (Apply here)
First time on the list as a Marriott Card but not actually since the SPG Amex was featured here many a time! This is the only card on the list that has an annual fee right of the bat but the sign up bonus and other benefits more than make up for it. The 60,000 points, awarded after spending $1,500 on the card in three months are worth at least $600 in our minds which means after subtracting the annual fee you are coming out ahead by $480.  Minimum Income: N/A

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card - 30,000 Miles (Apply here)
It has been awhile since we've seen this card on the list! It returns with a bang with 30,000 Aeroplan miles and the annual fee rebated in the first year! This is one of the richest offers yet for this card.  The bonus is awarded as follows: 15,000 Aeroplan Miles when you make your first Purchase with your Card + 15,000 Aeroplan Miles when you spend $1,000 within 90 days of Account opening. Depending on how you redeem those Aeroplan miles should be worth no less than $450 but more likely closer to $600 or more! Minimum Income: $60,000 Personal or $100,000 Household

http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=rePwQEjA0OI&offerid=373814.23&type=3&subid=0TD First Class Visa Infinite Card - 80,000 Points (Apply here)
Here is the best offer we've ever seen for this card! You get the standard sign up bonus of 20,000 points after the first purchase made on the card and another 60,000 if you spend $1,000 on the card in first 90 days having it. And all of this with a first year annual fee rebate! Those 80,000 points translate to $320 worth of travel credits for any travel booking or $400 worth of travel for bookings made via Expedia For TD. Minimum Income: $60,000 Personal or $100,000 Household

If you went for all these cards you ultimately could end up with nearly $2,000 in travel credits but even if you only take on one or two you are helping your travel budget significantly at no cost other than regular credit card spend

Earn up to 4,000 Bonus Aeroplan Miles for weekend stays at Marriott Hotels in Canada

Here is the first major airline bonus mile offer from the newly rebranded Marriott Bonvoy program! Sure there have been some one offs - bonus miles for three airlines at the Sharm El Sheikh Marriott Resort but that's not as extensive as this offer, which still isn't huge by any means since it is only for stays in Canada, and weekend stays at that. But it is the offer many of us do like for our domestic travel. I do consider it first major airline promotion for Marriott and it comes hot on the heels of Marriott's own Double Points promotion for Bonvoy members. Unfortunately you can't double dip with both offers - you'll have to choose one or the other.

Offer details
Earn 1,000 Bonus Aeroplan Miles per night for stays on Thursday to Sunday nights at Marriott hotels in Canada. Maximum bonus of 4,000 miles per stay. Full details & online booking. Until May 31, 19
Be sure to set your Marriott Bonvoy earning preference to Aeroplan miles to earn the bonus

WestJet has unofficially opened their first lounge in Calgary

According to this FlyerTalk thread WestJet opened up their first lounge on March 1st. Albeit this is only an interim lounge and a step for them opening up no less than nine lounges worldwide over the next few years.  This lounge is in Calgary and many will know it as the Chinook Lounge. Up until March 1st it was owned and operated by Swissport as a third party lounge that was utilized by WestJet, American Express, Priority Pass and numerous other lounge access providers. However you'll notice that if you go to Swissport's website it's no longer listed which seems to confirm this news.

The third party providers like Priority Pass do however list them on their sites still and still have access to the lounge.  What we are unsure about is whether it continues to be a lounge accessible under the American Express Canadian Lounge program. Based on the screenshot below it doesn't seem like it but remember the Platinum Card gives you Priority Pass benefits so that would count - just not your whole family like the Amex Canadian Lounge program provides. I have confirmed the lounge is no longer part of the American Express Canadian Lounge benefit.

Related: Rewards Canada's Guide to Business Classs Lounge Access

As you may know from an earlier post of ours in January the WestJet Rewards program recently had its latest revamp which included unlimited lounge access for Gold and Platinum members and it is stated as such for this lounge on WestJet's website:

This interim step seems like one that ties in with the business class that is now available on the 787 that is flying between Calgary and Toronto on daily basis from the A portion of YYC which is where this lounge is located. It also provides ample time to train WestJet employees on providing services in the lounge seeing that all of the WestJet lounge partnerships are/were operated by third parties.

WestJet's new business class pod on the 787
Here's an update from WestJet:
Yes, I can confirm that WestJet has taken over the Chinook Lounge and has replaced Swissport employees with WestJet employees. The catering has been upgraded to feature hot breakfast items, hot lunch entrees, and more fresh items. The lounge will not be rebranded to a WestJet lounge so as to not confuse our guest with this lounge and the upcoming flagship lounge at YYC.

Unlimited access is provided to our Gold and Platinum guests as part of their benefits and Silver members can use their lounge vouchers to enter. Access to LoungeKey and Priority Pass members will continue as before and is pursuant to the individual access provided by each program.
