Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for January - These cards provide some of the best value out of their welcome bonuses

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of January 2020! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards that have very good acquisition (welcome/sign up) offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the just sign up bonus, but when some of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when you grab them strictly for the sign up rewards. This month we actually only see one first year free card on the list!

No change this month from December although we should give an honorable mention to the CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Privilege Card as it can push a decent value of over $500 but don't play your redemptions right and you could end of with a value of only $1. Also note that we are early in the month and some offers are slated to change in the next couple of weeks so keep an eye out for those. In general we should see some really great offers in 2020 thanks to the new Air Canada Aeroplan program launch.

Remember as well that you will find this list smack dab in the middle of the Rewards Canada homepage for easy reference!

Here are our top 5 credit card sign up offers for January (in order of welcome bonus value, calculated as minimum mile/points value minus annual fee

Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card - 50,000 Points (Apply here)
No changes to this card means it stays put on the list The 50,000 points, awarded after spending $1,500 on the card in three months are worth at least $500 in our minds which means after subtracting the annual fee you are coming out ahead by $380. In reality you can pull even more value out of the card (into four figures) as we outlined in our post A look at how The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card provides huge value!  Don't forget you get an annual free night with the card as well on the card anniversary date!
Minimum Income: N/A

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card - 30,000 Miles (Apply here)
This is the only first year free card on the list this month and if you are just starting out I would recommend getting this card first thanks to that annual fee waiver! The bonus is awarded as follows: 15,000 Aeroplan Miles when you make your first Purchase with your Card + 5x Aeroplan Miles on all purchases per $1,000 in the first three months (up to 15,000 miles) Depending on how you redeem those Aeroplan miles should be worth no less than $360 but more likely closer to $800 or more! In fact if you take the per mile value from our post from late July this welcome bonus would be worth $1,800 or more.
Minimum Income: $60,000 Personal or $100,000 Household

Alaska Airlines World Elite Mastercard - 30,000 Miles (Apply here)
This card offers a welcome bonus of 30,000 miles when you spend $1,000 on the card in the first three months of having it. This is one of the easiest bonuses to achieve and this card is one of the most churnable in Canada. There are really no problems in getting it 2-4 times in one year alone! Those 30,000 miles are worth no less than $330 when redeeming for economy class flights and just go up from there like the TD Aeroplan card.
Minimum Income: $80,000 Personal or $150,000 Household

National Bank of Canada World Elite Mastercard - $480 Cash Back (Apply here)
This card's offer hasn't changed in a few months so it retains its spot in the list. You will get $40 cash back for each month you spend $500 on the card in the first 12 months. This will give you $480 in rewards but then subtracting the annual fee of $150 you are coming out ahead by $330.
Minimum Income: $80,000 Personal or $150,000 Household

BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard (Apply here)
This card offers a welcome bonus of 3,000 AIR MILES Reward Miles, split between 1,000 on first purchase and 2,000 more when you spend $3,000 within 3 months of getting the card. The annual fee of $120 is waived in the first year as well meaning these miles come to you at no cost other than card spend. Those 3,000 miles are worth $330 at a minimum when redeeming towards travel.
Minimum Income: $80,000 Personal or $150,000 Household

If you went for all these cards you ultimately could end up with anywhere from $1,700 to over $3,000 in travel value. However even if you only take on one or two you are helping your travel budget significantly at no cost other than regular credit card spend. We don't really recommend getting all five in one month unless you know you can meet the minimum spend for them all at once, rather you'd want to pick one or two right now, perhaps another next month and so on.

January 7 Update: WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard 350 dollar welcome bonus extended, Royal Air Maroc set to join oneworld on March 31, Air Canada worldwide seat sale

Yesterday was not the last day of the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard 350 dollar sign up offer! When I posted that it was all terms and conditions stated January 6 as the end date and we had received no notice from WestJet or RBC that the offer would be extended. Thanks to our attentive Facebook readers Dana B and Jon W they saw that sometime in the day the offer was extended to March 31! This is great news if you thought you might have missed the offer. I have updated yesterday's post if you want more details on the offer!

Royal Air Maroc announced back in 2018 that they will be joining the oneworld alliance sometime in 2020. Reports are out that it will officially join on March 31. The airline flies between Montreal and Casablanca and has their own frequent flyer program called Safar Flyer. If you have been reading our blog for some time you'll know that they are known for running some great award flight redemption discounts several times per year. (Source One Mile at a Time)

Fly round trip from Canada to Fiji for only 40,000 miles with Alaska Airlines' Mileage Plan redemption special

As soon as this offer came out yesterday it quickly made the rounds on the frequent flyer blogs and forums. Makes sense as it is a great deal! Alaska Airlines is promoting their frequent flyer partnership with Fiji Airways with two promotions - one for earning miles and one for redeeming miles. The earn miles, is simple - double Mileage Plan miles on Fiji Airways flights booked by February 29 and flown by June 30, 2020. But it is the redemption offer that is the star here as it offers up to 50% off the regular mileage amounts required to redeem Mileage Plan miles for Fiji Airways flights. Add in the fact that you can add in one free stop over on these redemption options and you have a true star. That means you can fly to Australia, New Zealand and other destinations with a free stopover in Fiji for only 20,000 Mileage Plan miles each way in Economy Class or 40,000 miles each way in Business Class. When the offer came out there wasn't much Business Class inventory available on Fiji Airways flights out of San Francisco or Los Angeles and with all the blogs covering it many of those were gobbled up quick - especially on Fiji Airways' new Airbus A350 flight out of LAX as that plane has their new business class with lie flat seats. There is still some business class availability out there but you'll have to spend some time searching for it. There is however tons of availability for economy class so those are much easier to find and redeem for!

Here are some examples of what is available:

Calgary - Fiji in April
And an example of the milk run that it is:

But still - for only 40,000 miles round trip and US$191 in fees this is deal that makes those connections and travel times potentially worthwhile!

Here is Vancouver for April as well:

Accumulating Mileage Plan miles isn't that hard in Canada since Alaska Airlines has their co-brand credit cards with MBNA. In fact, you could conceivably still apply for one now and try to push a lot of purchases on it this month (January) to have the miles post to your account in February to book by the February 29 deadline for this promotion. The main issue however is availability - while there is lots right now there is no guarantee that there will be availability by February 29.  The MBNA Alaska Airlines World Elite Mastercard comes with a 30,000 Mileage Plan miles welcome bonus when you spend $1,000 on the card, meaning you'd have 31,000 miles. Spend an additional $9,000 to get you to that 40,000 mile level for this offer. That's a lot to spend but maybe just maybe one of you are buying a car or doing a home reno where you can drop that kind of cash right away on the card!

You could also choose to buy Mileage Plan miles however they don't have a bonus for doing so right now so I would only buy them if you need to top off your account with a few thousand miles to take advantage of this offer. If you don't have any miles I wouldn't advise it - it is US$1,182.50 plus GST/HST to buy 40,000 miles as you an buy flights to Fiji for around the same price and you'll earn miles on the flights (in fact double if you register and credit them to Alaska) and earn your elite status qualifying as well.

For more details on the up to 50% off redemption offer click here and click here for details on the double miles offer!

Did you catch this offer when it first came out yesterday? Were you perhaps one of the lucky ones to get in on the business class option? Or even economy class? Will you jump on it now as a result of our post? Let us know in the comments below!

Redemption Stories: Saving $3,800 on last minute flights with the Platinum Card from American Express

For the Rewards Canada family a lot of our vacations are spur of the moment. So when we want to get away for only a few short days we don’t want to spend much of that time getting to our destination so we usually look for direct flights that aren’t much more than three hours in length. And since it is winter we wanted to go somewhere warmer. That means places like Los Angeles, San Diego, Palm Springs, or Phoenix. With a trip to Phoenix already booked for later in 2020 we crossed that off the list. Then with our attendance required at a New Years Eve party in YYC we crossed San Diego off the list as the flight back into Calgary wouldn’t leave us much time get home and get ready. So that left LA or the Palm Desert. We chose the latter as it tends to be more relaxing than LA. Of course this means booking at the last minute, which also means not so cheap flights when looking for four seats. Add in the fact it was during the Christmas high season and you know there aren’t going to be any cheap seats. Four tickets at the last minute to any of these cities run well over $1000 per person - in economy. That’s pretty pricey for these flights but that’s where points and miles can come in to help. WestJet is the only airline that flies direct to PSP from YYC (unfortunately the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX meant AC dropped the route) so that gave us two points options that we could utilize to make the price more bearable. The first was booking through WestJet and using our companion vouchers and WestJet dollars. Since my wife and I each have our own WestJet cards we have two companion vouchers that we could use. Perfect for a family of four. The second option was booking through American Express travel and utilizing the Fixed Points Travel program.
