Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for July - These cards provide some of the best value out of their welcome bonuses

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of July! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards that have very good acquisition (sign up) offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the just sign up bonus, but when most or all of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when you grab them strictly for the sign up rewards.  This month we are sitting at 4 cards with no annual fees in the first year (or at all) and one card with an annual fee in the first year.

This month sees only one change - the BMO Rewards Mastercard (No fee version) has been replaced with the TD First Class Visa Infinite Card since the latter's welcome bonus (sans the 20,000 points after having it for a year) is worth $240 at a minimum versus the BMO's ~$142. Also new this month is the order we list the cards, we now list the top 5 in order of value of the welcome bonus.

Here are our top 5 credit card sign up offers for July (in order of welcome bonus value)

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card - 25,000 Miles (Apply here)
Even though it is a decrease from the previous offer that ended at the start of June, this is still one of the better offers available in our market today. The bonus is awarded as follows: 15,000 Aeroplan Miles when you make your first Purchase with your Card + 10,000 Aeroplan Miles when you spend $2,000 within 90 days of Account opening. Depending on how you redeem those Aeroplan miles should be worth no less than $288 but more likely closer to $500 or more! In fact if you take the per mile value from our post from late April this welcome bonus would be worth $1,450.
Minimum Income: $60,000 Personal or $100,000 Household

Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card - 50,000 Points (Apply here)
This is the only card on the list that has an annual fee right of the bat but the sign up bonus and other benefits more than make up for it. The 50,000 points, awarded after spending $1,500 on the card in three months are worth at least $500 in our minds which means after subtracting the annual fee you are coming out ahead by $380. In reality you can pull even more value out of the card (into four figures) as we outlined in our post A look at how The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card provides huge value!
Minimum Income: N/A

BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard - 3,000 Miles  (Apply here)
This almost best ever sign up bonus for an AIR MILES co-branded card continues on our Top 5 sign up list thanks to its 3,000 miles sign up bonus (worth ~$300 or more) and no annual fee in the first year!  Even if you aren't a fan of AIR MILES the fact you can get 3,000 miles and them use them as cash rewards for no cost to you should be enough to go out and get this card. Please note: new Collectors have Miles automatically deposited into their Dream Account, not their Cash account.
Minimum Income: $80,000 Personal or $150,000 Household

BMO BMO World Elite Mastercard - 35,000 Points  (Apply here)
The card offers a 35,000 point sign up bonus that is worth $250 in travel and since the card is first year free right now (they bill you $150 and then rebate after several months) that means your $250 in travel is free and yes you even get the LoungeKey access and 4 lounge passes included in that first year free.
Minimum Income: $80,000 Personal or $150,000 Household

http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=rePwQEjA0OI&offerid=373814.23&type=3&subid=0TD First Class Visa Infinite Card - 80,000 Points (Apply here)
This card is offering up to 80,000 points when you apply for and receive it however 20,000 of those points won't be received until you have the card for one year. For this post sake we are only looking at the 60,000 points you can get quickly in the first few months. You get the standard sign up bonus of 20,000 points after the first purchase made on the card and another 40,000 if you spend $2,000 on the card in first 90 days having it. All of this is with a first year annual fee rebate! Those initial 60,000 points translate to $240 worth of travel credits for any travel booking or $300 worth of travel for bookings made via Expedia For TD.
Minimum Income: $60,000 Personal or $100,000 Household

If you went for all these cards you ultimately could end up with about $1,300 to over $3,000 in travel value. However even if you only take on one or two you are helping your travel budget significantly at no cost other than regular credit card spend. We don't really recommend getting all five in one month unless you know you can meet the minimum spend for them all at once, rather you'd want to pick one or two right now, perhaps another next month and so on.

Offer details:
3,000 Bonus Bonvoy Points for stays on a Sunday night at the Renaissance Montreal Downtown Hotel.  Full details & online booking Until Sep 1, 19

A quick search of pricing revealed that the rate for this offer is the same as the best available rate which is about $6 more than the members only rate. 3,000 points is worth more than $6 so this is definitely an offer you may want to check out if you need a Sunday night stay in Montreal

Can't make use of this offer? Maybe one of these other bonuses will work for you:
  • Earn 1,500 Bonus Bonvoy Points on all stays of 2 or more nights at over 7,000 Marriott Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. Full details, online registration and booking. (Registration is required)
  • 2,000 Bonus Bonvoy Points when your stay includes either a Sunday or Thursday night at The Courtyard Montreal Airport. If your stay includes both a Sunday and a Thursday night, you'll earn 5,000 bonus points. Full details & online booking.

Increased welcome bonus for the CIBC Aerogold Visa Infinite card - up to 20,000 Aeroplan Miles + a $120 Air Canada Gift Card

It's been sometime since we've seen CIBC come out with an offer outside their standard one for the CIBC Aerogold Visa Infinite card! The new offer for this card sees the welcome bonus miles boosted by 5,000 miles to 20,000 miles. That's broken down into 15,000 miles upon first purchase and 5,000 more miles when you spend at least $1,000 on the card within 4 billing cycles. On top that, CIBC is also giving a $120 Air Canada eGift Card as an additional bonus on top of the miles. You could almost consider this eGift card as the annual fee waiver for the first year since it does equal the $120 you have to pay for this card. It's nice to see CIBC finally come out with an offer on their Aerogold card.

July 3 Update: Travel Hacking 101 update, More Rewards Visa being discontinued, Montreal to Casablanca flights for $796

It's been a long time coming but we have finally brought our Travel Hacking 101 article back up to date. This article shows how you can earn Aeroplan Miles or British Airways Executive Club Avios for free It's definitely not like the good old days when the article showed how to get 80,000 or more Aeroplan miles or Avios at no cost - now we are down to 31,000 miles or 4,000 Avios. Read the article here

You may have noticed that over the past month or so we have been in the process of removing the Scotiabank More Rewards Visa card from our website. Unfortunately, as of August 31 the card will cease to exist. This is really too bad as it is the best No Annual Fee Travel Rewards Credit Card in Canada (as ranked by Rewards Canada) and was a big step in More Rewards expanding to a nationwide coalition rewards program. That means we have now lost the top 2 no annual fee travel rewards cards in Canada! The other being the American Express Blue Sky credit card. In the coming months there will be two more no annual fee cards (1 travel + 1 cash back card) that will also be pulled from our market however we aren't allowed to disclose which cards those are just yet.

Swoop, WestJet's low cost carrier will be launching new routes to San Diego from Abbotsford and Edmonton this fall. Flights will operate twice per week from Abbotsford and three times per week from Edmonton. (Source Routesonline)

Save 25% on business class reward tickets between Toronto and Europe with Air France-KLM's July Promo Rewards

The newest set of Air France KLM’s Promo Rewards are now out!  This month we see fewer options for flying out of Canada when compared to May. With promo rewards the discount ranges from 20 to 50% off the regular amount of miles required to redeem for these flights. As you can see just by the discount this can be a very good offer if you get 50% off for Business Class! This month sees only one Canadian city in the mix. You can save 25% off business class reward tickets to Europe from Toronto on Air France or KLM.

Offer details
July Promo Rewards – Save 20% to 50% on the Award Miles usually required for an award ticket.
Destinations vary by each promotional period. Full Details  Book by Jul 31 for travel Sep 1 – Oct 31, 19
This month's Canadian cities:
Toronto - 25% off business class on Air France or KLM

Here are the mileage requirements for flying from Toronto to Amsterdam or Paris (the mileage amount will vary for other cities in Europe). As you can see Toronto is a real good deal even at 25% off!

And an example of some of the business class availability from Toronto to Brussels:

And return flights:

Total miles and fees come to 79,500 miles and 452.93EUR:

And a few more options:

Remember one way flights are exactly half of the above mileage amounts.

If you don't have enough miles for a Promo Reward your best bet is to convert Marriott Bonvoy points to Flying Blue on a 3:1 basis. Remember you'll earn 5,000 bonus miles when you convert 60,000 points at a time (a total of 25,000 miles per 60,000 points) That means 120,000 points will get you to 50,000 miles which is enough to cover a one way flight between Canada and Europe in Business Class!

If you don't have any Marriott Rewards Points you can always look at getting the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card to top off your account. Currently the card comes with a 50,000 point sign up bonus when you spend $1,500 on the card and then you could also grab the Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card as it also has 50,000 point sign up bonus. You would then ultimately be able to have 100,000 points which can be converted 3 to 1 to Flying Blue Miles plus Marriott will kick in an additional 5,000 miles for every 60,000 points transferred.  Of course timing of getting the card(s) now, spending and getting the points will likely not happen for this month but it sets you up for future offers.  Need to grab two tickets for an itinerary? You could choose to get one Marriott card for yourself and one for your partner or spouse and you'll have a lot more points!

Fairmont Royal York Hotel 90th Birthday Bash

You know him as the host of the Rewards Canada Podcast and today Jeff Fredericks expands his role with Rewards Canada as a contributor to our blog. Jeff was lucky enough to attend Toronto's Fairmont Royal York Hotel 90th anniversary celebration in June. Here is his recap of the event:

Last month the Fairmont Royal York celebrated its 90th anniversary and held a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially unveil the completion of an extensive multi-year renovation including a transformed lobby and new lobby bar.

At the time, the tallest building in Toronto and the entire British Empire, the 28-storey hotel was the most dominating building of its era when it opened in 1929.

Edwin Frizzell, Regional Vice President and General Manager at Fairmont Royal York

Paul Campbell,  investment partners KingSett Capital.

Heather McCrory, Senior Vice President, Operations, Americas at FRHI Hotels & Resorts.

On June 24th, the hotel hosted a party for the ages with a large birthday celebration featuring three events in one.  Guests were decked out in their best cocktail attire and treated to live music by Montreal Rhapsody Orchestra, a fashion show curated by CAFA, an official cake cutting and remarks from executives of the Fairmont.

The swanky event was, in many ways, a throwback to a time when the Royal York was ‘the’ place to be seen.  The $5 million worth of ‘refurbishments’ was on full display including a new 90th Anniversary clock which executives “dedicated to the people of the city of Toronto, as well as the past, present and future colleagues of Fairmont Royal York who have, for 90 years, been the beating "heart" of our hotel."

Located directly across from Toronto’s Union Station and near prominent attractions including the Hockey Hall of Fame, Rogers Centre, Scotia Bank Centre and CN Tower, the Fairmont Royal York Hotel should be high on your list of hotels to consider when visiting the city.   For best rates, try booking directly at Fairmont.com
