Hotel Review: San Francisco Airport Marriott Waterfront

The Rewards Canada family was in need of a hotel near SFO for a quick overnight stay to catch a flight in the morning. We wanted something close, not crazy expensive and of course a hotel where status could get us something extra. It seems like most of the hotels around the airport get average reviews with nothing really outstanding, so having Platinum status with Marriott we decided on the San Francisco Airport Marriott Waterfront since it was close and has a M Club lounge. By having the lounge it made for an easy breakfast option when not having too much time in the morning before our flight.

Walking into the hotel it may seem pretty nice but one thing you learn is that you can’t judge how good it is by its lobby or entrance area. Some hotels can have amazing public spaces and the rooms will be well.... not that amazing. Such is the case here! The check in area was crazy busy with quite a long line but luckily the elite line only had three people waiting in it. We had done a mobile check in and requested a mobile key but that never made it to our phone. The lady working the elite desk was pleasant, told us we were upgraded to a concierge level room however she never asked what Platinum amenity we wanted. Per Marriott’s own terms and conditions we are to be provided with a $100 credit for them not asking. When I called down and requested the $100 credit they said we selected points which wasn’t the case at all. We have brought this up directly with Marriott via Twitter and we eventually did get the credit after having to reach out several times.

As well when doing the mobile check in you can put in additional requests and in this case we requested two additional duvets but those weren’t waiting for us in the room. I had to call down for those and also ask for more bath towels since the room only had two for the four of us. This has got to be one of my biggest pet peeves with so many hotels, not just this hotel! When you book a room you are asked how many guests there are per room so they should make sure it is stocked accordingly.  I would have to say 75% of the time the number of bath towels do not match the number of people on the booking.

The room itself was OK and the best part about it was a little surprise waiting for us in the toilet! Not sure if housekeeping was overwhelmed and rushing their room cleaning but they sure missed that! Speaking of the toilet, the toilet paper holder didn’t hold the roll well and it pretty much fell off every time it was used. In all honesty I was surprised the room was considered concierge level.

Here are a few shots of the room, I didn't take too many as we were pretty tired and just wanted to get to bed!

The views from this room however are an avgeek's dream as it faced onto the waterfront and the parallel approach for runways 28R and 28L.

The M Club lounge is on the main floor at the end of the lobby and was very busy when we went in for breakfast. We did take the last four seat area in the lounge as all the other possibly tables for 4 people were already occupied. The food options were decent with a wide selection of cold and hot options including some breakfast tacos that our oldest daughter really enjoyed.

Maybe we've been spoiled by some of the other Marriott hotels we have stayed at and were expecting similar quality to those as all four of us were a little disappointed in the hotel. We had it booked for our transit back to Calgary but cancelled that booking and decided we would try out the Aloft hotel a few blocks away. Watch for that review to come soon!

Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for April

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of April! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards that have very good acquisition (sign up) offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the just sign up bonus, but when most or all of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when you grab them strictly for the sign up rewards. In fact all of the cards on this list are first year free so you can try them out at no cost and decide later on if the card is right for you. All the while you earn the sign up bonus which can be used to subsidize your travels!

No change this month in the cards in this Top 5 list but you should know that this is the last month that you can get the really good RBC Avion offer. Read more about that offer here.

Here are our top 5 credit card sign up offers for April (in alphabetical order)
BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard - 3,000 Miles  (Apply here)
The best ever sign up bonus for an AIR MILES co-branded card continues to be in the Top 5 sign up list thanks to its 3,000 miles sign up bonus (worth ~$300 or more) and no annual fee in the first year! Even if you aren't a fan of AIR MILES the fact you can get 3,000 miles and them use them as cash rewards for no cost to you should be enough to go out and get this card.

BMO Rewards Mastercard- 20,000 Points  (Apply here)
Included in the revamped BMO Rewards program that essentially sees the program devalued the BMO Rewards Mastercard has never been on this list before. It now makes the list because it actually has a limited time sign up bonus and the card has no annual fee so these 20,000 points (worth ~$142) come to you at no charge.  10,000 points are awarded after the 1st purchase and then 10,000 more if you can hit $1,000 in spending in the first three months.

BMO BMO Rewards World Elite Mastercard- 35,000 Points  (Apply here)
Revamped on January 15th with a reward program that is less rewards on your day to day spend the card still graces this list thanks to its sign bonus and first year free offer. The card now offer a 35,000 point sign up bonus that is worth $250 in travel and since the card is first year free right now (they bill you $150 and then rebate after several months) that means your $250 in travel is free and yes you even get the Priority Pass access and 4 lounge passes included in that first year free.

CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite - 20,000 Points (Apply Here)
The CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite card now offers up to a 20,000 Aventura Points sign up bonus worth up to $400 in travel depending on what type of flight you redeem for and since the annual fee of $120 (and supplementary cards are waived as well) those 20,000 points come at no cost to you.

RBC Visa Infinite Avion Card - 25,000 Points (Apply here)
A card not known for straying too far from its standard sign bonus comes out huge this month with a bonus that's 10,000 points higher than normal and offers the first year free! That means you can get 25,000 RBC Rewards points at literally no cost to use towards flights via the RBC airline redemption program or convert to other programs like WestJet (it's 250 WestJet dollars!), British Airways or Cathay Pacific.

If you went for all these cards you ultimately could end up with $1,300 or so in travel credits but even if you only take on one or two you are helping your travel budget significantly at no cost other than regular credit card spend

IHG Rewards Club Accelerate returns for Spring 2018 - Earn lots of bonus points for your IHG stays!

We brought you the initial details of the new IHG Accelerate offer yesterday but the registration page was glitching and not showing all the Accelerate offers you need to achieve to reach your various bonuses. That's now been fixed and you'll be able to go into your accelerate page to see what is being offered for you.

Here is my Accelerate offer:

Once again based on what I believe our travels will be during the promotional period I am not going to go out of my way to achieve the whole amount. Even staying 5 nights in total for 5,000 points would be tough. In all likelihood I'll maybe achieve the stay once bonus of 1,000 points and that's about it.

Let us know what offer you get in the comments below!

Offer details
IHG Rewards Club Accelerate: Earn 500 to 30,000 or more Bonus IHG Rewards Club Points when you complete stays at IHG Hotels Worldwide. Bonus varies by member  Full details, online registration and booking (Registration is required) May 1 - Jul 31, 18

Registration now open for the next IHG Rewards Club Accelerate promotion from May 1 to July 31

The Winter Accelerate bonus isn't over yet as it goes until the end of April but if you don't have any IHG stays planned until May or later  don't fret as the latest Accelerate offer for the second quarter of 2018 has been released! As we have seen each Accelerate promotion they come out with new personalized offers for each member. The total bonus available per member ranges from a minimum of 30,000 points to well past 100,000. You can register for Accelerate here. (HT View from the Wing)

As Gary from VFTW noted there are issues with the registration page for the time being and you cannot see what steps you have to take to earn the various bonus points. It does appear the my offer jumps to 51,600 points from 41,000 points for the Winter - although it shows that 51,600 as nights not points! I'm not sure I'll be able to achieve that many nights in 109 days!!

This offer will be available for stay from May 1 to July 31, 2018.

[EXPIRED] One Week Left for the Exclusive offer for the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express for Chase Marriott Premier Cardholders

THIS OFFER HAS NOW EXPIRED

It has been nearly a month since the Chase Marriott Visa card exited our market but that doesn't mean Marriott Rewards members lose out on earning points in their favourite hotel program for everyday purchases. How so you may ask? How will I be able to earn points outside of Marriott stays? Well the answer to that is the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express. And for those of you who did have the Chase Marriott Visa you have one week left to get in on this exclusive offer for you for the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card.

If you have been collecting Marriott Rewards points and the program is your hotel program of choice then you should already know that Marriott owns Starwood and that you can link and convert points between the loyalty programs of both chains. This means you can use the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express to actually earn Marriott Rewards points. How so? The American Express card will earn Starpoints for your purchases and then you can link your Starwood Preferred Guest account with your Marriott Rewards account. Once you do this you can convert the SPG Starpoints to Marriott Rewards points at a rate of 1 to 3. That's right you are technically earning three Marriott Rewards points for every one Starpoint earned on the credit card.

So what should I do if I have the Chase Marriott Premier Visa Card?
The good news is if you have the Chase Marriott Visa card, American Express has come out with an exclusive offer for you for the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card as long as you have not had it before.

The offer sees the sign up bonus boosted by 5,000 Starpoints to 25,000 Starpoints (non-Marriott cardholders are offered 20,000 Starpoints) after meeting the minimum required spend on the card as well as a 8.99% balance transfer for the first 12 months, the latter of which I guess makes sense for anyone who has been carrying a balance on their Marriott Visa card.

Starpoints, the currency of Starwood Preferred Guest is one of the most valuable loyalty currencies on the market today and that extra 5,000 points is a sweet deal, adding at least $150 in value to the card. As we mentioned already, Starpoints easily convert to Marriott Rewards points, all you have to do is link your Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest accounts and then the transfers are easy. One Starpoint is worth three Marriott Rewards Points. What does that mean with the SPG Credit Card? That means the sign up bonus is equivalent to 75,000 Marriott Rewards points, the standard earn of 1 Starpoint per dollar spent is equal to 3 Marriott Rewards points and the 2 Starpoints per dollar spent at participating Marriott and Starwood Hotels is worth 6 Marriott Rewards points. The last offer of spend at their hotels has now been extended to July 31 from the previous end date of February 15.

Just so you know 75,000 Marriott Rewards is a really good sign up bonus! What can those points get you? It can get you at least 10 free nights at a Category 1 hotel within the Marriott Rewards program or even 2 nights at a Category 8 hotel if you catch a PointSavers Reward! Here is the Marriott Rewards free night chart:
The points can also be used at the higher Ritz-Carlton Hotels and 75,000 Points can score you one to three free nights at these posh hotels:

You can search all Marriott Hotels and their respective category placements here.

Of course you don't have to convert to Marriott Rewards right away, you can store the points in your SPG account for use at Starwood Hotels which once again, the sign up bonus of 25,000 Starpoints provides some huge value!
