The U.S. Chase Aeroplan World Elite Mastercard Credit Card is now available

We don't discuss U.S. based credit cards very often here on Rewards Canada but one card that we have watched a little more closely and discussed here on Rewards Canada is Aeroplan's new U.S. co-brand card. That card, the Chase Aeroplan® World Elite Mastercard® Credit Card is officially here now and open to applications. So if you are a Canadian playing the U.S. credit card game you'll definitely want to check this card out as it brings several items to the table you won't get on Canadian Aeroplan co-brand cards like instant 25K  elite status.

Aeroplan joins Chase Ultimate Rewards + a waitlist bonus for the new Chase Aeroplan Card (U.S. only)

This post is for our readers from the U.S. and of course for our Canadian readers who play the U.S. credit card game!

In December 2020 Air Canada Aeroplan and Chase announced they would be launching a new partnership in 2021 that would see Chase issue an Aeroplan co-brand credit card for the U.S. market and see Aeroplan become a transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards. It is the latter that officially kicks off today as Aeroplan is now part of Chase Ultimate Rewards. While the co-brand card hasn't been released just yet they have opened up a special wait list offer for it that you can register for starting today.

Air Canada Aeroplan and Chase are launching a co-branded Mastercard in the U.S.

This post is for our readers from the U.S. and of course for our Canadian readers who play the U.S. credit card game! Air Canada just announced they will be partnering with Chase in the U.S. to offer an Air Canada Aeroplan Mastercard in the U.S. This will mark the airline program's reentry into the U.S. market and not only will there be an Aeroplan co-brand card with Chase, Aeroplan will also become a partner in Chase's Ultimate Rewards program.

August 9 Update: Chase Canada to forgive all debt owed on their Canadian Marriott & Amazon Visa cards

Early in 2018 Chase Canada completely shut down their credit card business. At the time they only had two cards left in their portfolio, their Marriott and Amazon Visa cards as the other cards they had issued previously were taken over other Canadian banks. Although Chase was no longer issuing cards here in Canada they still had cardholders who had outstanding balances from the two cards that were paying those balances off month to month. Well it was revealed yesterday in an article on CBC that Chase made the decision to forgive all the debt owed by Canadians on those cards. That's right - forgive all that debt. We are unsure of how much debt it is but in all likelihood it isn't an insane amount - rather something not much more than it costs Chase to continue to operate here. By forgiving this debt, Chase can fully exit our market and not have to worry about carrying the costs involved with their Canadian division. The CBC article which Rewards Canada is quoted in, states some people's accounts of $1,300 to over $6,000 being forgiving and I have this question to our readers: Are you one of these people who is having some debt forgiven? If so, let us know in the comments below and if you are willing to share, let us know how much is being forgiven! Deep down I feel it won't be many of you as I know most Rewards Canada readers are points & miles aficionados who tend to pay off their balances every month so as not to have to pay interest since it kills the value of the rewards.

[EXPIRED] One Week Left for the Exclusive offer for the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express for Chase Marriott Premier Cardholders

THIS OFFER HAS NOW EXPIRED

It has been nearly a month since the Chase Marriott Visa card exited our market but that doesn't mean Marriott Rewards members lose out on earning points in their favourite hotel program for everyday purchases. How so you may ask? How will I be able to earn points outside of Marriott stays? Well the answer to that is the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express. And for those of you who did have the Chase Marriott Visa you have one week left to get in on this exclusive offer for you for the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card.

If you have been collecting Marriott Rewards points and the program is your hotel program of choice then you should already know that Marriott owns Starwood and that you can link and convert points between the loyalty programs of both chains. This means you can use the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express to actually earn Marriott Rewards points. How so? The American Express card will earn Starpoints for your purchases and then you can link your Starwood Preferred Guest account with your Marriott Rewards account. Once you do this you can convert the SPG Starpoints to Marriott Rewards points at a rate of 1 to 3. That's right you are technically earning three Marriott Rewards points for every one Starpoint earned on the credit card.

So what should I do if I have the Chase Marriott Premier Visa Card?
The good news is if you have the Chase Marriott Visa card, American Express has come out with an exclusive offer for you for the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card as long as you have not had it before.

The offer sees the sign up bonus boosted by 5,000 Starpoints to 25,000 Starpoints (non-Marriott cardholders are offered 20,000 Starpoints) after meeting the minimum required spend on the card as well as a 8.99% balance transfer for the first 12 months, the latter of which I guess makes sense for anyone who has been carrying a balance on their Marriott Visa card.

Starpoints, the currency of Starwood Preferred Guest is one of the most valuable loyalty currencies on the market today and that extra 5,000 points is a sweet deal, adding at least $150 in value to the card. As we mentioned already, Starpoints easily convert to Marriott Rewards points, all you have to do is link your Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest accounts and then the transfers are easy. One Starpoint is worth three Marriott Rewards Points. What does that mean with the SPG Credit Card? That means the sign up bonus is equivalent to 75,000 Marriott Rewards points, the standard earn of 1 Starpoint per dollar spent is equal to 3 Marriott Rewards points and the 2 Starpoints per dollar spent at participating Marriott and Starwood Hotels is worth 6 Marriott Rewards points. The last offer of spend at their hotels has now been extended to July 31 from the previous end date of February 15.

Just so you know 75,000 Marriott Rewards is a really good sign up bonus! What can those points get you? It can get you at least 10 free nights at a Category 1 hotel within the Marriott Rewards program or even 2 nights at a Category 8 hotel if you catch a PointSavers Reward! Here is the Marriott Rewards free night chart:
The points can also be used at the higher Ritz-Carlton Hotels and 75,000 Points can score you one to three free nights at these posh hotels:

You can search all Marriott Hotels and their respective category placements here.

Of course you don't have to convert to Marriott Rewards right away, you can store the points in your SPG account for use at Starwood Hotels which once again, the sign up bonus of 25,000 Starpoints provides some huge value!

[EXPIRED] Exclusive offer for the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express for Chase Marriott Premier Cardholders

THIS OFFER HAS NOW EXPIRED

In a little over a week the Chase Marriott Visa card will come to a complete end. Now, there are two main types of people who have this card. Those who are Marriott Rewards members and were using it for the points and benefits that came with the card or those who got it for the no foreign transaction fee. If you are in the Marriott Rewards camp you may be asking how will I be able to earn points outside of Marriott stays after March 15? THIS OFFER HAS NOW EXPIRED

WestJet will be moving their summer seasonal Whitehorse service to Calgary from Vancouver for the upcoming summer. The four times weekly service will launch on June 29. (Source WestJet)
"WestJet has been serving Whitehorse with seasonal summer service to Vancouver since 2012," said Brian Znotins, WestJet Vice-President, Network Planning, Alliances and Corporate Development. "As we continue to expand our Calgary hub, it makes sense to move the service from Vancouver to Calgary to offer residents of Whitehorse more destinations via YYC Calgary International Airport. This is also an opportunity for residents to fly non-stop to Calgary, and this summer will also see an increase to our seasonal service from three times weekly to four times weekly."

As of today Canadians travelling to Brazil will be able to apply for their Brazillian Visitor Visa online. The cost US$44.24 per Visa and is a big step over the old process where you had to mail all documents in to receive your Visa. Find out more and apply for your Visa here (Source The Points Guy)

[EXPIRED] Chase Marriott Premier Cardholders receive exclusive offer for the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express

THIS OFFER HAS NOW EXPIRED

The news that broke earlier this week wasn't good. Chase Bank is deciding to leave to Canadian market which means their two credit cards that cardholders could still use, the Marriott and Amazon Visas are being discontinued.

The good news for those who hold the Chase Marriott Premier Visa is that Marriott has teamed up with American Express to provide an exclusive offer for Marriott Visa cardholders for the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express.

The offer sees the sign up bonus boosted by 5,000 Starpoints to 25,000 Starpoints after meeting the minimum required spend on the card as a 8.99% balance transfer for the first 12 months, which I guess makes sense for anyone who has been carrying a balance on their Marriott Visa card.

January 19 Update: All Chase Marriott Visa cardholders to receive free night award, 20x Shoppers Optimum points tomorrow and a trio of Aeroplan hotel bonuses

We reached out to Marriott for clarification on the Free Night and Elite Status Night credits that will be given to those who have the soon to end Chase Marriott Premier Visa card.  The clarification we were looking for is who would be getting the nights/credits as some people (my wife included) just got them not too long ago when the card hit the anniversary date late in 2017. The news is great:
All cardholders will be receiving their 2018 Annual Free Night Certificate and 15 Elite Night Credits regardless of when their anniversary is in 2018
Marriott wanted to soften the blow by the end of this card and this is a great way for the card to go out. Cheers to Marriott and Chase for doing this with some grace. And stay tuned for some more news tomorrow for Chase cardholders!

Wyndham Hotels announced they are buying La Quinta Hotels. The U.S. based chain has a very small presence in Canada with only 2 hotels but does have almost 900 hotels in the U.S. and Latin America. Of note for most Canadian is the La Quinta Returns program will be absorbed into Wyndham Rewards which means you 'll be able to use the latter to redeem for stays at La Quinta Hotels once the sale is approved and the programs are integrated.

Receive 100 bonus AIR MILES Reward miles when you spend $50 or more at Rexall today or tomorrow!

Or go shop at Shoppers Drug Mart tomorrow to earn 20X Shoppers Optimum Points when you spend $50 or more. Remember right now is the time you want to rack up as many Shoppers Optimum Points as come February 1st your points will convert to the new PC Optimum program and the more points you have the more value you'll get for them. Read more about that here.
