American Airlines has announced new service between Los Angeles and Auckland New Zealand. You may be wondering why we are posting this on a Canadian site? The main reason why is that American Airlines is an AIR MILES preferred airline partner for redemptions and this comes on the heels of one of our readers sending us a complaint that they have saved up enough miles to fly to New Zealand but can't fathom the huge fees required on top of the miles to fly on Air New Zealand (also an AIR MILES partner). Well now that AA will fly to NZ this opens up the option to use those AIR MILES on these flights with a lot less fees as AA doesn't charge exorbitant carrier surcharges (nee Fuel Surcharges) HT View from the Wing

Canadians Pick their Top Travel Rewards Credit Cards for 2015 - Results of our Canada's Choice Vote!

For the fifth year in a row RewardsCanada.ca, the country’s leading source for frequent flyer and travel reward information, asked Canadians to rank their favourite travel reward credit cards as part of its ‘Canada’s Choice’ Awards.

More than 6,000 users of the popular website responded by choosing their favourite card from the more than 85 travel rewards credit cards available in Canada.

“RBC is Canada’s largest bank so it’s not surprising so many of their customers voted for their cards,” said Patrick Sojka of Rewards Canada. “I suspect many aren’t aware of the incredible amount of choice available in Canada.  When it comes to comes to maximizing travel rewards it really pays to get informed and shop around.”

When compared to Reward Canada’s annual ranking there are some surprising omissions in the Canada’s Choice results including the top ranked BMO World Elite MasterCard and TD’s Aeroplan Visa Infinite card. 

“While it may be convenient to pick a travel reward credit card associated with your bank it should really come down to matching up features and benefits to your needs,” add Sojka. “ For example, a family of four looking to travel the same time every year might place a premium on choice and flexibility.  Cards that are program agnostic and allow you to apply points to any airline offer the greatest amount of flexibility and are a great choice.

HigherEdPoints adds TD Rewards as a new redemption partner

Lately we've been discussing HigherEdPoints more here on Rewards Canada due in large part to our new Guide to miles and points for students. Now we have even more news on this company. As you may be aware the only miles you could redeem for education credits via HigherEdPoints were Aeroplan miles. Well as of last week a second program has joined in. TD Rewards.

This is great news for those who carry TD cards likes the TD First Class Visa Infinite Card, TD Platinum Travel or TD Classic Travel Visa card. All of these cards earn TD Rewards Points, the First Class and Platinum at 3 points per dollar while the Classic is 2 points per dollar spent. So how many TD Rewards Points does it take to receive an education credit at more than 75 post secondary institutions and two government student loan programs?

As you can see it is 62,500 points for $250 in education credits. If you take their top earning cards this equates to 20,833.33 in spending to get the credit. This is roughly a 1.2% return. The same as the new 'book any travel rate' that kicks in on November 15th but is lower than the 1.5% return for redeeming those points via Expedia for TD.  All in all this isn't that bad of option for TD Rewards points holders! If you are a numbers person this is definitely a better value than what is seen with Aeroplan redemptions.

Looking at Feb 9-16, 2016 in business class you can get the discounted rate between Vancouver & Berlin for 62,500 miles and C$706.80 in taxes and fees. To buy the miles will cost C$1731.66 (including 5% GST) and add in the taxes and fees on the award flight of C$706.80 for a total of C$2,438.46.

To buy the same tickets outright costs C$4,922.74. As you can see buying the miles can provide you a savings of nearly C$2,500 on these particular flights!

Some Other Options:
Vancouver - Paris Feb 9-16: To buy the same tickets outright costs C$3,875.76. Using the  buying the miles can provide you a savings of nearly C$1,800 on these particular flights!
Vancouver - Barcelona Feb 9-16: To buy the same tickets outright costs C$3,229.39. As you can see buying the miles can provide you a savings of just over C$850 on these particular flights!
Vancouver - Athens Feb 9-16: To buy the same tickets outright costs C$3,559.52. As you can see buying the miles can provide you a savings of nearly C$1,100 on these particular flights!

Remember you only have until November 13th the get the bonus on buying miles to take advantage of this offer!
