Hurry! New Amex offer for Amazon Prime - Spend at least $79 and Earn a $20 credit.

Another excellent Amex Offers offers was revealed this morning for Amazon Prime Memberships. When you spend $79 or more on the membership you'll get a $20 statement credit. In our household we received it on The Platinum Card. I say hurry in the post title as this offer is limited to the first 5,000 cardmembers who register for it.

You may wonder how does it work with the first month free. Basically the offer is open to December 4 for it to be charged to your registered card which gives enough time is you sign up on October 31 as you'll be billed at the end of November and it should show up on your account by December 4.

The other question is - what about existing members who can renew in that time and I don't know the answer yet. I'll reach out to American Express to find out but if I don't hear back I'll be able to report if it works as my Amazon Prime membership renews on October 26. Likewise if any of our readers are in the same situation and your membership renews earlier than mine please let us know if you get the credit.

If you are eligible you'll find this offer in your Amex account for you to register for. We also have them listed in our Guide to American Express Canada 'Amex Offers'

Here is our current list of offers pulled from our guide:

September 17 Update: WestJet providing refunds for cancelled Europe flights, Air Canada provides complimentary COVID-19 insurance coverage & Hawaii set to reopen on October 15

WestJet continues to make some headway in regaining consumer confidence as they are now providing refunds for travellers who had flights booked to or from Europe between March 1 and October 31. Europe makes up a very small portion of WestJet's overall traffic and with strict policies in place from the EU on cancelled flights WestJet probably realized it is best to go this route. Prior to this WestJet was already providing refunds for U.S. and U.K. travel. Still noticeably absent however are the lack of refunds for flights within Canada (which make up the biggest part of the revenue pie for WestJet) as well as Latin America and Sun Destinations (another major revenue source). (Source: The Star)

Here's some recommended reading or listening for you about refunds with WestJet: My experience getting a refund from WestJet for cancelled U.S. flights and Rewards Canada Podcast Episode 70 - August 10, 2020 COVID-19 and the airline refund situation in Canada

---

Air Canada has followed in the footsteps of WestJet and other airlines from around the globe in providing complimentary COVID-19 insurance coverage for international travellers. Just like we mentioned when WestJet starting offer it this insurance does not replace regular travel insurances as it is only specific to testing positive for COVID-19 while abroad. You 'll want to make sure that you test yourself before you travel (Within 15 days of depature) so that you have proof of being negative because if there is any proof of you showing any symptoms within 15 days of your departure and you test positive while being abroad you won't be covered. (Source Air Canada)

The Manulife COVID-19 Emergency Medical Certificate of Insurance (the "Plan") is available for new international, round-trip bookings made in Canada between September 17 and October 31, 2020, inclusive, for travel completed by April 12, 2021. If, when abroad, customers test positive for COVID-19, the Plan will provide eligible customers coverage that includes:

  • Up to CDN $200,000 per insured for COVID-19 treatment medical expenses.
  • Up to CDN $150 per person per day for quarantine costs (meals + accommodation); Up to CDN $300 per family per day up to a maximum of 14 days.
  • Up to CDN $500 for expenses related to return home if the advisory from the Canadian government goes from Level 3 to Level 4 while at destination.

For those of you who are flying to and or from the U.S. this will be welcome and exciting news for you. American Express Centurion lounges will begin to reopen in October (PHL & SEA are first on 10/5) with the Centurion Lounge Commitment incorporating new health and safety practices including served food instead of buffet style. On top of that they have announced they will be expanding and enhancing the lounges at New York La Guardia and Las Vegas airports. (Source American Express)

  • The Centurion Lounge at LGA will double in size and relocate to a space post-security within the airport’s brand-new, state-of-the-art Terminal B. The new lounge will feature a family room, additional workspaces, private telephone rooms, and views of the New York City skyline.
  • The footprint of the first-ever Centurion Lounge, opened at LAS in 2013, will be expanded from nearly 9,000 square feet to over 13,400 square feet. The newly designed lounge will feature additional multi-purpose areas, new private telephone rooms, newly designed reception and workspace areas and more.

In what may be welcome news to many of us Canucks, the Governor of Hawaii announced that the state is set to reopen on October 15. Travellers will have to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of arriving to avoid the mandatory 14 day quarantine period. (Source: Hawaii Governor's Office)

Pre-travel testing enables travelers to avoid a mandatory 14-day quarantine if they are tested no earlier than 72 hours before their flight arrives with an FDA-approved nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), performed using a nasal swab, and can show proof of negative test results from a CLIA certified laboratory. Travelers also will have their temperatures checked upon arrival and must fill out a travel and health form. Upon arrival in Hawai‘i, passengers unable to provide proof of an approved negative test will be required to go into quarantine for 14 days or until they can provide proof of negative test results.

From wineries to home decor stores we have another great update to confirmed multiplier locations for the American Express Cobalt Card

Another shout out to the Rewards Canada community for providing us even more merchants for our American Express Cobalt Card Confirmed Multiplier Locations feature. The list keeps growing every week and is a good way for you to check where you can earn the amazing 5x points per dollar on the Cobalt card but is also a good reference as to which places accept Amex in general. Even though this feature is for the Cobalt Card you can definitely extrapolate some of the merchants for the multipliers on the Platinum Card, Gold Rewards Card, Business Edge Card and Scotiabank Gold American Express card.

In this latest update we give props to FM and Christian for providing over a dozen new locations for the list.

FM has provided us with another good sized update for our Amex multipliers. Looks like they had some fun this past summer hitting up many wineries in BC! It is interesting to note how some of them show up as 5x multipliers but others are only 1x. All of the below locations that we list here are new to the feature:

5x points locations:

  • Poplar Grove Cheese
  • Mooded Merganser
  • Foxtrot Vineyards
  • Wesbert Winery
  • Sajiva Wellness
  • Roche Wines
  • The Black Antler
  • Naramata Inn
  • Hatching Post BBQ
  • BjornBar Bakery
  • TOCK
  • Singletree Wines
  • The Locavore

1x points locations:

  • Kidsbooks in the Village
  • Legends Haul
  • Ruby Blues Winery
  • Marichel Vineyard
  • Deep roots winery
  • Laughing stock winery
  • Tyler Harlton Wines
  • Lang Vineyards

Meanwhile Christian, who is also in BC, must have been doing some shopping for their home as they let us know about the following: (I assume they are all 1x)

  • Crate and Barrel
  • Muse & Merchant Home Collection
  • CB2

The feature itself is getting quite large in terms of the numbers of merchants listed on it and I simply present it as an alphabetical list for each multiplier so you may have to peruse it carefully to see if a specific merchant you are looking for is on the list. Since it is getting so big I am reaching out to our community again as I would love to hear your feedback as to how the information on this page can be presented. If you have any ideas on how to make it better please let me know in the comments below!

Update - Targeted offer: Amex, CIBC & TD Aeroplan co-brand credit cards will earn 10 Aeroplan Miles per dollar spent on aircanada.com along with a 15% discount

Late last night I posted about the 10 Aeroplan Miles per dollar spent offer for TD's Aeroplan co-brand credit cards for purchases made on aircanada.com. Turns out the offer is not just for TD's cards but is also good for American Express' and CIBC's Aeroplan co-brand credit cards. The extra miles offer is good for any purchases made by September 30 for targetted cardholders of the three banks.

They have a separate landing page on their site for each issuer with complete details of the offer:

Here's a recap of the post from last night modified to cover all the cards:

Here's a sweet offer for those of you who have an Aeroplan co-brand credit card and are lucky enough to be targetted for it! Keep an eye out for the email in your in-box to see if you are one of the lucky ones.  The offer which launches today (September 16th) offers select Aeroplan cardholders 10 Aeroplan Miles for every dollar spent at aircanada.com including Air Canada Vacations packages, car rentals, hotel bookings, and other third party partner products and services that can be purchased through aircanada.com. The extra miles offer is good for any purchases made by September 30 and is available to all Aeroplan co-brand credit card holders.

This is a huge bonus considering the normal earn rates for aircanada.com purchases range from as little a mile for $1.50 spent on the lower end versions of the cards to 1.5 miles per $1 spent higher end cards. That's an extra 9.33 miles per dollar spent for the lower cards and an extra 8.5 miles per dollar for the others.

Think about how much you can earn here - way you are required to travel every week between Toronto and Vancouver for your job and are able to purchase business class. Those flights range from $2,500 to over $3,000 per round trip. Book just four weeks worth of flights for $10,000 to $12,000 by September 30 on one of these co-brand cards and you have just earned 100,000 to 120,000 Aeroplan Miles! That's a lot of freaking miles! Book even more flights and those miles will just keep pouring in!

On top of the extra miles there is a promo code that is part of this promotion that will knock 15% off the base fares for flights originating in Canada to all destinations where Air Canada flies. It can be applied to Air-Canada published Economy, Premium Economy and Business Class base fare flights with travel dates between September 16, 2020 and June 15, 2021 (inclusive) that are booked by September 30.  The promo code offer is valid on flights operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge and Air Canada ExpressTM carriers and is also valid on certain codeshare flights only (includes Lufthansa Group, Swiss International Airlines Group, Austrian Airlines Group, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings)

We'd love to hear from you if you have been targetted for the offer and how many of you are going to move your Air Canada bookings to the next two weeks? Also curious as to how many of you who booked flights yesterday will be cancelling them within that 24 hour grace period and re-booking? I'd also love to hear how many flights you are planning to book and how many miles you'll earn thanks to this offer! Let us know in the comments section below

Top 5 Small Business Credit Card Sign Up offers for September - These cards provide the best value out of their welcome bonuses

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Small Business Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of September 2020!  This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards for small businesses that have very good acquisition (welcome/sign up) offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the just sign up bonus, but when some of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when you grab them strictly for the sign up rewards. This month we see three first year free cards on the list!

Here are our top 5 small business credit card sign up offers for September:

Minimum value: $357
This card had its welcome bonus boosted last week to 50,000 points when you spend $5,000 on the card in the first three months. On top of that they are waiving the $120 annual fee in the first year which means you get the full value out of those 50,000 points which when redeemed via bmorewards.com for travel will net you just over $357. This is the highest welcome bonus value out of all small business cards in Canada.

Minimum value: $350
This card awards 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points which are awarded after spending $1,500 on the card in three months. Those points are worth at least $500 in our minds which means after subtracting the annual fee you are coming out ahead by $350. In reality you can pull even more value out of the card (into four figures) as we outlined in our post A look at how The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card provides huge value!  Don't forget you get an annual free night with the card as well on the card anniversary date!

Minimum value: $330
Like the other BMO Business card on this list, this card comes with a first year annual fee waiver which means the 3,000 AIR MILES welcome bonus comes at no extra cost. You'll receive 1,000 bonus miles on your first purchase and 2,000 more miles if you spend $5,000 on the card in the first three months of having the card. We value AIR MILES Reward Miles at no less than 11 cents each when you redeem for travel so that puts this welcome bonus value at a minimum of $330.

If you went for all these cards you ultimately could end up with over $1,700 in travel credits but even if you only take on one or two you are helping your travel budget significantly at no cost other than regular credit card spend. We don't really recommend getting all five in one month unless you know you can meet the minimum spend for them all at once, rather you'd want to pick one or two right now, perhaps another next month and so on.

Great transfer bonus from Coast Rewards to Aeroplan - earn up to 300,000 Bonus Aeroplan Miles!

The Coast Hotels Coast Rewards awesome transfer bonus to Aeroplan has returned! Last seen in October of 2016 (at least that's the last time we posted about it here on RC) the bonus provides 4x the Aeroplan miles for every Coast Rewards points converted. This means you can get anywhere from 2,000 to 300,000 Bonus Aeroplan Miles when you convert those points. That's right, 300,000 bonus Aeroplan miles. This time around the offer is even better than the 2016 version as that time it was triple miles on all transfer levels and only quadruple on the highest redemption option. That's not the case this time as you'll get quadruple miles on all transfers!

These are transfer levels from Coast Rewards and the miles you'll get:
1,000 Coast Rewards Points = 4,000 Aeroplan Miles (1,000 base + 4,000 bonus)
1,500 Coast Rewards Points = 6,000 Aeroplan Miles (1,500 base + 4,500 bonus)
5,000 Coast Rewards Points = 20,000 Aeroplan Miles (5,000 base + 15,000 bonus)
10,000 Coast Rewards Points = 40,000 Aeroplan Miles (10,000 base + 30,000 bonus)
20,000 Coast Rewards Points = 80,000 Aeroplan Miles (20,000 base + 60,000 bonus)
50,000 Coast Rewards Points = 200,000 Aeroplan Miles (50,000 base + 150,000 bonus)
100,000 Coast Rewards Points = 400,000 Aeroplan Miles (100,000 base + 300,000 bonus)

I don't know how many of you out there have 100,000 Coast Rewards Points as there are only 35 hotels to earn points at with a 1 point to 1.5 point / dollar earn rate but I suspect there may be one or two of you who do have that many points and for you to get 400,000 Aeroplan Miles is pretty sweet. The website doesn't state an end date for the promotion but if 2016 is any indication this will only be around for a couple of weeks. Learn more about this promotion here.
