Alaska Airlines new partner airline flight bonus is one Canadians should really consider - earn 10,000 miles on round trip flights

Alaska Airlines released a new flight bonus offer earlier this week that us Canadian's should take a closer look at. This offer is for all of Alaska’s non-U.S. based partner airlines that fly beyond North America. Meaning out of Canada (or the U.S.) to Europe, Asia, Australia etc. You get the picture. And most of the airlines participating do serve Canada. Save for Fiji Airways, Latam and Singapore Airlines you have 12 airlines that this bonus will work with for flights out of Canada. (See the list of airlines below).

This bonus itself is interesting as it is a bonus that will add miles to whatever you earn on a flight so that you reach 5,000 miles earned in total each way as long as you fly between North America and a non-North America destination on one of the participating partner airlines. That means round trip flights will earn 10,000 miles in total. This is a really good bonus especially if you are flying in a fare class that may only earn 25% of the mileage. For example, if you fly the lowest economy fare class on Aer Lingus between Toronto and Dublin and credit it to Mileage Plan you'd only earn 25% of the flown miles or about 1,639 earned miles round trip. So with this bonus Alaska Airlines will throw in an additional 8,361 miles to get you to that 10,000 miles. That's a pretty sweet bonus! What is also great about this offer is that it is valid all year starting March 1st and you don’t even have to register for it. Simply credit the flight to Mileage Plan that is flown between March 1 and December 31 and the bonuses are yours.

Offer details:
Earn a minimum 10,000 Mileage Plan Miles when you fly on eligible Mileage Plan Global Partner flights between North America and a non-North America destinations. Full details. Mar 1 – Dec 31, 20

Earn a minimum of 5,000 total miles each way on Aer Lingus, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Condor, EL AL Israel Airlines, Emirates, Fiji Airways, Finnair, Hainan Airlines, Icelandair, Japan Airlines, Korean Air, LATAM Airlines, Qantas and Singapore Airlines flights between North America and a non-North America destination between March 1 and December 31, 2020. North America is defined as the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Any bonus miles added to reach the 5,000 mile minimum do not count toward elite status qualification. Please allow four to six weeks for miles to be credited to your Mileage Plan account.

February 5 Update: Turkish Airlines Vancouver route now open for reservations, new Amex Offer for Wayfair and 10 new bonus offers

Back in October Turkish Airlines revealed they will start flying to Vancouver from Istanbul in 2020. We now know the schedule and aircraft for the route and that it is now open for reservations (at least for cash bookings). The first flight will take place on June 9 and operate 3x weekly with a Boeing 787-9. Turkish Airlines is a Star Alliance member which means it is a great option for Aeroplan members to utilize for flights to Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. In fact, maybe you've seen Turkish's recent Super Bowl commercial that reiterates the airlines flies to more countries worldwide than any other airline. However at the time of posting this flight was not showing up at all in some Aeroplan and United MileagePlus searches we conducted. All routing from YVR to IST had the routes connecting via Montreal. It is possible if you call in that Aeroplan may be able to find it but with the system switch over there are still super long wait times to get ahold of an agent. (Source Routesonline)
Schedule per Routesonline:

TK076 YVR1720 – 1450+1IST 789 247

Marriott's 2020 hotel category changes are here and they aren't pretty globally - not as bad here in Canada

It's the time of year where we start getting news from all the hotel chains about their hotel category changes. That is, not changes to award charts or amounts but rather where individual hotels fall into for those categories. Some hotels move up categories, that is become more expensive in terms of the number of points required to redeem for free night, while others go down in price and become cheaper to redeem for.

Today, one of the most popular hotel chains and frequent guest programs, Marriott Bonvoy revealed their changes for 2020. These changes will take effect on March 4 and a total of 29% of their hotels worldwide will be changing categories. That's a lot of hotels! And how is that 29% broken out? 22% will go up in price while only 7% will drop down. What this  means is that over 1,500 hotels will be more expensive come March.

Here in Canada a total of 76 properties out of 255 will be changing categories and we do a lot better number wise compared to the global numbers. 42 of our hotels are actually going down a category while 34 are moving up, a 55-45% split.  Vancouver gets the worst of it with many of their hotels moving up while the opposite is happening in Alberta with lots of hotels going down - a sign of the times I guess!

Some of the notable changes in Canada
  • Calgary Airport Marriott In-Terminal Hotel moves down to Category 4 from 5
  • JW Marriott Parq Vancouver moves up from Category 6 to 7
  • The Algonquin Resort St. Andrews by-the-Sea, Autograph Collection moves up from Category 4 to 5
  • The Westin Grand, Vancouver moves up from Category 5 to 6
  • Le Westin Resort & Spa, Tremblant, Quebec moves up from Category 6 to 7
A quick look around the globe shows popular locations in French Polynesia, Maldives etc. aren't changing (they could only go down since most are Category 8). A lot of hotels in Hawaii are going up a category - not all of them, but quite a few. Same for California, Arizona and other popular sun destinations for Canadians - a lot of locations moving up in price.

As we always advise when these changes are announced you should book now for hotels that are going up in price and hold off on booking if a hotel you are eyeing will go down in points cost.

You can check out all the changes happening to 2,185 hotels globally here(They have a search box where you can filter the results to put in a specific hotel, city or country.)

Price increase coming to WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard companion vouchers, base level card voucher to be expanded to include the U.S.

One of the most popular benefits on Canada's number one airline credit card will be taking a hit come April 1. The coveted Companion Voucher benefit on the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard will become more expensive for two of three options starting on April 1st.

Screenshot from WestJet

Here is the current companion voucher pricing:
  • round trip travel in Canada and Continental U.S.: $99 plus taxes & fees
  • round-trip travel to/from Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and Hawaii: $299 plus taxes and fees
  • round-trip travel to/from rest of WestJet network: $399 plus taxes and fees
As of April 1st the pricing will be as follows:
  • round trip travel in Canada and Continental U.S.: $119 plus taxes & fees
  • round-trip travel to/from Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and Hawaii: $399 plus taxes and fees
  • round-trip travel to/from rest of WestJet network: $399 plus taxes and fees
As you can see flights within Canada and to the U.S. will be jumping by $20 but a much larger hit takes place for sun destinations as those are going up a full $100 to be the same as Europe flights at $399 each. So we are seeing 20% to 33+% increases in those categories - those are pretty significant!

None of us like to see rewards or benefits devalued - especially when it is one of the most popular benefits but I suspect that is what has led to this increase. The vouchers and this credit card are a victim of their own success. The two most popular redemption options are costing WestJet and they need to recoup some of that money. Based on what reward programs tell us in terms of reward popularity we can safely assume most companion passes are redeemed for travel within Canada and to the continental U.S. which means that WestJet will now earn 20% more cash on those voucher redemptions. Closely followed by Sun Destinations - WestJet does serve many sun destinations so again another popular redemption channel for the vouchers but a 33% increase? That's big and will really make some people reconsider the card if this is the main redemption option they look at. Many times you can get round trip flights to sun destinations that have a base fare at or below that $399 level so it may not make sense to even redeem a voucher for those flights. Europe of course is unaffected as the frequency of flights and number of destinations makes up such a small portion of WestJet's network that voucher redemption volume would match this - and add in the fact that WestJet has shifted their European pricing that the base fare is always quite low to begin with that it may not make sense to redeem the voucher for Economy class flights.

All that being said I still see some big value in the vouchers. That value comes from last minute bookings and premium class bookings. If you are someone who only books seat sale fares or months ahead of time the vouchers will definitely have less value to you now. However if you are like the Rewards Canada family and tend to be spontaneous and book flights on whim at last minute - the vouchers can provide some huge savings. In the past they have saved us literally four figures on last minute flights since both my wife and I have our own cards meaning two vouchers to use. We pay $1000 each for our tickets but our two kids flew those same tickets for $99 plus the taxes and fees.  Now that will jump to $119 for the same situation but I'll gladly pay $119+fees for a $1,000 ticket.

Recommended reading: Why my wife and I each grabbed our own WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercards

The other valuable option for the voucher that remains and this is for all of the options like North America, Sun Destinations and Europe is redeeming the voucher for Premium Economy. The price you pay with a companion voucher doesn't change if you book Premium Economy so this is where the vouchers can really come in handy. With flights to Europe or Maui on WestJet's 787 Dreamliner easily pricing over $2,000 round trip in Premium Economy getting that second ticket for $399 can provide significant savings.

On a plus note - the base level WestJet RBC Mastercard is seeing it's voucher benefit get better come April 1st. The benefit that was just added to the card last year has been available for flights within Canada only and that is being expanded to the continental U.S. as well come April 1st. The price of $199 for the companion does not change with this enhancement.

Ultimately it's really unfortunate that we are seeing this change to the vouchers from the World Elite version of the card and I suspect some of you may really consider dropping the card now - primarily those flying economy class to sun destinations - but don't forget that the card does have other benefits, namely the first checked bag free which is a huge $$$ saver as well for the lower fare class buyers.

What do you think of these changes? Will it make you reconsider having the card? Let us know in the comments below!

Why The Platinum Card from American Express is the best card to use for booking WestJet flights

Earlier this year I let you know about how we used The Platinum Card from American Express to save thousands of dollars on some last minute WestJet flights, read all about that there. At the time of booking those flights I thought this is a pretty good deal - even if we didn’t redeem points. Then after I wrote the redemption story it really confirmed in my mind that The Platinum Card is the best card on the market for booking WestJet flights with - yes even better than the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard. Don’t get me wrong - the WestJet Card is an amazing Card that both my wife and I hold in our wallets thanks to its benefits but outside of select scenarios we’ll stick to using the Platinum Card for booking WestJet flights via American Express Travel.

Here’s why the card is best the to book WestJet flights with:

One of the benefits of the Platinum Card from American is the International Airline Program. This benefit provides discounts for premium travel on a whole bunch of airlines including WestJet. Those airlines are:

This discount is extended to the cardholder and up to seven guests travelling on the same itinerary.

As mentioned above the discount is mainly for premium classes like Premium Economy, Business and First class. WestJet however differs as the discount seems to work on regular economy class fares as well. This does not include the absolute lowest Basic Economy fares which we as a family don't book anyways. The last flights we booked with WestJet (in the redemption story) were last minute economy class flights and the Platinum Card provided $800 in savings just from the discount alone. This was before using points to redeem via Amex’s Fixed Points for Travel Program and our $200 annual travel credit to bring the price down another $3,000.

I reached out to American Express to see if there is a set discount rate with WestJet but there isn't. It actually varies based on fare class, dates, etc.

I thought I would see what the pricing would look like on other WestJet flights by utilizing the Platinum Card's International Airline program via American Express Travel and follow with examples below.

To be sure you are getting the discount you'll want to make sure your search results show "International Airline Program - Platinum Cardmember Benefit" in the results:

Economy Class booking examples:

Calgary to Toronto April 8 to 12

American Express Travel with the Platinum Discount:

And via WestJet:

As you can see it is just over $14 cheaper per person for the same flights when booking with the Platinum Card via American Express travel. Not a huge difference but still some savings to be had.

However when you look at last minute bookings the savings can become more significant:

Calgary to Toronto February 12 - 15, 2020

American Express Travel with the Platinum Discount:

WestJet:

It's when you get to the premium classes that the discount becomes even more visible:

Premium Economy Booking Example:

Toronto - London Gatwick April 22 - 29, 2020

American Express Travel with the Platinum Discount:

WestJet:

As you can see it is $124 cheaper with American Express Travel for this flight in Premium Economy.

And here's where the discount really makes a difference:

Business Class Booking Example:

Toronto - London Gatwick April 22 - 29, 2020

American Express Travel with the Platinum Discount:

WestJet:

The same flights, times, etc. but $572 cheaper when you use the Platinum Card from American Express via American Express Travel. Are you starting to see why this card is one of the best for booking WestJet flights?

Sure the Platinum card has a $699 annual fee but that can be more than made up for in one booking alone depending on your fare class, number of travellers and more. Our own experience of saving over $800 in one booking is just one great example! You can then also choose to use the your $200 annual credit off the card as well for these flights.

On top of the discounts there are other factors to take into account that make this method of booking very attractive. First off is Membership Rewards Points earning - the Platinum Card earns 2 points per dollar spend on travel so these bookings will earn that amount. You can also choose to redeem points against these bookings with either the Fixed Points for Travel program or  Use points for purchases options. Both of which you'll still earn the 2 points per dollar on the full travel booking amount:

We earned the full amount of Membership Rewards points despite using points and the travel credit against these charges

What about WestJet rewards earn and elite status benefits? Those are all intact even when you book via American Express Travel. On our last flights we enjoyed our full WestJet dollars earn (5% for being Gold):
WestJet dollars earned on that recent Amex Travel booking

And even our qualifying spend was applied:

You can also call up WestJet after you book your flights via American Express Travel  to easily apply any seat selection vouchers that you may have. You'll also enjoy any WestJet elite status benefits that you may have so long as you have added your WestJet Rewards member number to your reservation. Amex Travel lets you easily add it during the booking process. If you do hold the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard then by making sure you have your WestJet Rewards membership number on the booking made via Amex you'll still enjoy the first bag free benefit.

Now there are some scenarios where I would book direct with WestJet and not use the American Express Travel / Platinum Card combination.

Those scenarios are:
  • Member exclusive fares - these are the set fare rates for select routes that you can book with WestJet and have to pay for with your WestJet Rewards dollars.
  • Companion vouchers - The vouchers that come with the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard can only be redeemed via WestJet (call in or online)
  • WestJet dollar redemption  - you can only redeem your WestJet dollars towards flights via WestJet directly (call in or online)
  • Sale Promo/Coupon codes offered by WestJet - these are those promo codes you'll find at certain times of the year that come in your email or are featured on their seat sale pages. You cannot use these codes via American Express Travel. There is also a promo code from Perkopolis that some people use (technically you are supposed to be a Perkopolis member to take advantage of it) which provides similar discounts on Economy or Premium Economy flights as seen above from Amex however their code does not appear to work on Business Class.
Personally, outside of the four options listed above I think I am going to be booking all my WestJet flights via Amex travel with the Platinum Card from American Express to make sure I am saving some money on those flights!

How about you - do you book your WestJet flights via American Express Travel and use The Platinum Card from American Express to take advantage of the savings? If not, tell us why! If you do, give us some examples of how it did save you some cash! Let us know in the comments section below.

February 4 Update: Aeroplan Costco partnership ending, Rexall launching own loyalty program and will drop AIR MILES, save up to $1,000 on Air Transat packages

The partnership between Costco and Aeroplan will come to an end on April 30. We also noticed that Primus is gone as an Aeroplan partner as well. Air Canada does really seem to be going back to it roots with Aeroplan (or whatever the new program will be called) and moving it back to a frequent flyer program rather than a coalition program as the number of non-travel or non-credit card partners is really being whittled down. Find out more about Costco and Aeroplan here
Please note that you will still be able to redeem Aeroplan Miles for Costco gift cards beyond April 30.

Also on the loyalty program news front - Rexall is going to launch their own loyalty program on May 1st. As of that date they will no longer participate in the AIR MILES program. This just reiterates what we said in our podcast episode 63 and here on the blog that it really appears the model for coalition loyalty programs is past it's peak. For many retailers now it makes more sense to run your own loyalty program as the costs associated with doing so have really come down from years ago. Anyways, you can pre-register for Rexall's new program and if you are one of the first 100,000 to do so they will give you 10,000 points which are worth $4. Right away this tells me the program has the potential to be confusing! Why $4 for 10,000 points? You're already making it complicated Rexall. Find out more and pre-register for the program here.

Rewards Canada has a new booking partner that you can find on our travel booking page - Austrian Airlines has returned to the mix. See our Book Travel (how to support Rewards Canada) page here

Yesterday we brought you details of IHG Rewards Club's new global promotion of up to 4x points for stays at their hotels worldwide. They had some issues with letting members register for the offer but that does appear to be fixed now. Find out more about the offer here.

25% Off Business Class Award Tickets or Air France KLM between Calgary or Toronto & Europe

The newest set of Air France KLM’s Promo Rewards were released over the weekend and some Canadian cities are back on the list after a month without any.  With promo rewards the discount ranges from 20 to 50% off the regular amount of miles required to redeem for these flights. As you can see just by the discount this can be a very good offer if you get 50% off for Business Class and that's the case for flights on KLM out of Edmonton! For Calgary and Toronto the discount is 25% off business class.

Offer details
February Promo Rewards – Save 20% to 50% on the Award Miles usually required for an award ticket. Destinations vary by each promotional period. Full Details  Book by Feb 29 for travel Apr 1 – May 31, 20

This month's Canadian cities:
Calgary - 25% off business class on KLM
Toronto - 25% off business class on Air France or KLM

Here are the mileage requirements for flying from Canada to Amsterdam or Paris (the mileage amount will vary for other cities in Europe).

And an example of some of the availability from Toronto to Paris in April:
 And return flights:

Here is an example of a round trip booking:

Even with the taxes and fees at that amount this is a decent redemption as business class flights on these routes will cost you over $4,100.

Normally at this point in the post we look at some  other city options that price out at the same amount or even less miles however we can't find any. In fact all the usual cities that used to price out less than Paris or Amsterdam like Brussels and Milan are all pricing at 53,000 miles each way (106,000 round trip). It appears that Flying Blue may have fixed their pricing where flights beyond their hubs were pricing out cheaper? We'll have to keep checking to see if this is the case.

And for Calgary? I couldn't find any promo rewards pricing out at the 45,375 mile level to Amsterdam or beyond. I found a few days you could get to Zurich for 53,000 miles, Amsterdam was pricing over 60,000 miles and Rome was 58,000 miles. Not so great for those in Southern Alberta!

If you don't have enough miles for a Promo Reward your best bet is to convert Marriott Bonvoy points to Flying Blue on a 3:1 basis. Remember you'll earn 5,000 bonus miles when you convert 60,000 points at a time (a total of 25,000 miles per 60,000 points) That means 120,000 points will get you to 50,000 miles which can cover a one way flight in business class

If you don't have any Marriott Rewards Points you can always look at getting the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card to top off your account. Currently the card comes with a 50,000 point sign up bonus when you spend $1,500 on the card and then you could also grab the Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card as it also has 50,000 point sign up bonus. You would then ultimately be able to have 100,000 points which can be converted 3 to 1 to Flying Blue Miles plus Marriott will kick in an additional 5,000 miles for every 60,000 points transferred.  Of course timing of getting the card(s) now, spending and getting the points will likely not happen for this month but it sets you up for future offers.  Need to grab two tickets for an itinerary? You could choose to get one Marriott card for yourself and one for your partner or spouse and you'll have a lot more points!
