You can now book Singapore Airlines award tickets with Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan

This is an update to news that goes back over two years where we detailed the news of a partnership between Alaska Airlines and Singapore Airlines (Read that post here). At the time the partnership allowed members of both airline's programs earn miles on each others flights. Fast forward to October 2019 and you can finally redeem Mileage Plan miles for flights on Singapore Airlines. The news is great since Alaska Airlines seems to have negotiated something great with Singapore Airlines as they have great access to award seats that isn't even seen with SQ's Star Alliance partners.

This new development with their partnership does see Alaska Airlines members being able to redeem on Singapore Airlines' flights out of the U.S. to Singapore and from Singapore to Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and more.

Here is the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan award chart for Singapore Airlines flights from the U.S. to Asia.

View Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan Award charts here

This is the most relevant chart for us Canadians as Alaska doesn't publish a specific Singapore Airlines chart from Canada since Singapore Airlines doesn't serve Canada.  You can however search (and have combined awards) from Alaska's Canadian gateways to the U.S. and fly on Singapore Airlines:
Example out of Vancouver to get the Singapore the main leg on SQ

Example of Calgary to Singapore

There does appear to be lots of availability on SQ from their U.S. gateways.  Here is just one example of business class from LAX to SIN:

All reports so far show that Alaska Airlines has virtually the same access to seats that Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer members do. Some people apparently also found the odd first class seats for redemption but those all seem to be gone now! But it is something to keep in mind.

Also, what you'll want to be aware of is that on a miles to miles basis Singapore's own KrisFlyer program does charge less mile than Alaska for many of these redemptions. This is something you'll want to keep in mind if you are converting hotel points (ie Marriott Bonvoy) to either of these programs for a redemption on Singapore. If you are, you'll of course get more value from the KrisFlyer program. This does not take into account your existing balances, earning potential from other sources and so on. What I mean by this is if you earn a decent amount of Mileage Plan miles from various sources it is probably better to convert less points from a hotel program to Mileage Plan then to convert a larger amount to KrisFlyer where you may have no previous balance at all. Just food for thought!

For us Canadians the best way to earn Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles outside of actual flights with them and their partners is the Alaska Airlines World Elite® Mastercard® from mbna. The card comes with a welcome bonus of 30,000 Mileage Plan miles and a host of other benefits. Another great way is with Marriott Bonvoy since the points transfer 3:1 to Alaska which means you can utilize the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card and the American Express Cobalt Card to earn even more Mileage Plan miles. If you are also lucky enough to still hold a Diners Club Mastercard you can also convert to Mileage Plan with that card.

What do you all think of this great development? Has anyone booked any flights with SQ yet using your Mileage Plan miles? Let us know in the comments below!

Aeroplan Availability Alert: Lie flat business class seats between Toronto and Halifax for the Christmas season

For the Christmas season Air Canada is flying an internationally configured Boeing 777 once a day between Toronto and Halifax. If you have never flown international business class before then this is a good opportunity to do so. Sure it's only just 2 to 2.5 hours of flying but for 25,000 miles one way + about $90 in taxes you experience a lie flat seat. The same revenue ticket is $634, which gives you about a value just under 2.2 cents per mile redeemed. Not as high as a lot of other redemption options but not bad as well! If you think you would never get enough Aeroplan miles to try business class on a long haul flight then this is your other option to say you have tried a lie flat seat! This is especially the case for those living in Halifax and the surrounding area since aircraft with lie flat seats are a rarity!

The Boeing 777 will only be flying the route once per day in each direction from December 14 to January 8. The flight numbers to look for are AC619 (YHZ-YYZ) and AC614 (YYZ-YHZ)

Here is the one way example:

Round trip you are looking at 50,000 miles + $173 in taxes for a ticket that would cost you $1265.94. Again giving you just under 2.2 cents in value per mile redeemed:

When searching other key dates for Christmas we found at least 4 business class seats available on the Halifax-Toronto flight (AC619) every day from December 14 through to the 25. Toronto to Halifax (AC614) availability was pretty much the same except right before Christmas where the 19th, 20th and 22nd had no availability at all, the 23rd only had two seats but the 24th through to the 30th have at least 4 each day.

You can check availability and/or book these flights online at aeroplan.com. You can also check availability using services like ExpertFlyer.com

One of the easiest ways to earn enough Aeroplan Miles for redemptions like those listed above is to grab a co-branded Aeroplan credit card. You could look at the American Express Gold Rewards card - it offers a 25,000 Membership Rewards points welcome bonus which can then be converted to Aeroplan almost instantaneously at a 1:1 rate which would give you enough miles for a one way redemption on this route. Or it is enough miles to redeem for this flight in round trip in Economy class. Also with the Gold Rewards card you don't have to wait until the end of your billing period to receive your welcome bonus after you've met the minimum spend. There are numerous other card options to earn Aeroplan Miles which you can find listed on our Aeroplan Bonus Miles page.

Hotel Review: Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa

Earlier this year the Rewards Canada family spent an awesome 5 days at the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa in the Palm Springs area. With short direct flights from Calgary, Palm Springs is a regular destination for us however each time we've gone we've always stay in Marriott/Starwood branded hotels. We thought we'd change it up this time and move further out from Palm Springs by staying in Indian Wells at the Hyatt Regency.

The hotel is beautiful with a nicely landscaped entrance area, a main building with regular rooms and also several dozen one and two bedroom villas. The nicely manicured grounds include several pools, lots of space for lounging and lots of pathways to enjoy the resort. For this stay we booked one of the two bedroom villas. Now that our kids are older and travelling with more stuff (they are teenage girls!) we are finding that we are booking two rooms for our family for almost every stay and when we compared the prices of two regular rooms to this villa, it wasn't that much more so we went for it! Add in the privacy of the villa and the space it would afford we couldn't go wrong with booking it.

Our flight from Calgary arrived in Palm Springs around noon so we asked for early check in knowing we would be at the hotel around 1:30pm. Without Hyatt status this was perhaps a long shot and such was the case. We did not get early check in so we went for lunch at Agave Sunset which is one of the hotel's dining options and then walked around the resort to become acquainted. Returning to the lobby to check in at the actual 4 pm check in time we were told the villa wasn’t ready yet and it should only be about 10 more minutes. We waited those 10 minutes and prior to going back to the check in desks a manager happened to be walking past us and overheard us as a family discussing our villa not being ready yet and he went to find out what was going on. About 10 minutes later he came back saying it’s still wasn’t ready but it should only be about 10-15 minutes more. It was close to 30 minutes. Not sure if he really pulled any strings but we were a little surprised he didn’t offer some drinks while we waited as many hotels tend to do when your room isn’t ready. In the end we didn’t get into the villa until close to 5pm.

When you stay in one of the villas at this resort one of the included benefits is butler service and this starts right from the time you check in. Once we received the keys to our villa one of the butlers on duty drove us in golf cart around the resort to our villa. He then brought our luggage to us shortly after that.

On to the actual two bedroom villa!

First off all I can say is there is lots of room! In fact tons of room! Our two bedroom villa was one that had a single king in each bedroom and a pull out sofa. You can also get two bedroom villas that have one king and two queens.  Included in the villa were a fridge, microwave, fireplace, hot tub, and two very large bathrooms. The 600 series of villas while seeming to have older hot tubs were recently renovated and look nicer and fresher than the 700 series which have waterfalls cascading into some of their hot tubs. Some of the villas also have fire pits or private plunge pools instead of hot tubs.

Here is main living room which has the fridge, microwave, fireplace, dining table and pull out sofa:

The hallways off the main entrance each have a closet complete with robes before entering each bedroom:

Here is bedroom number one:

Bedroom number two is exactly the same except mirrored:

There are two full size and as I mentioned before, very large bathrooms. Each one is situated off the hallway to each bedroom:

Each bedroom has their own patio door going out to the villa's private yard. First a panoramic view:

And more views of the outside:

As I mentioned above our hot tub  wasn't one of the cascading water fall ones you may see in photos of the hotel online. I guess that's the trade off from what I can tell - the villa we had had an updated interior versus an updated exterior which is what we'd rather have.

Also as I mentioned previously, all villas come with butler service. We didn’t use the service very much at all. We simply called in on occasion to have them bring up some soft drinks and waters as those are all included with the villas. I don't about you, but for us humble beginnings people things like butler service just seems weird. We are more the type that like to do things on our and get them done on our own. Heck, if we knew where they stocked the drinks we would have never called upon the butler. Even at check out, we didn't call upon them to drive us the check out in their golf card. We walked it and why not - the weather and resort are so nice it would have been a shame not to!

If you have read other reviews of Rewards Canada family stays you'll know one of our biggest pet peeves with a lot of the higher end hotels and resorts is that they only have valet parking. Well you don't have to worry about that here as the Hyatt has both self and valet parking option. It was nice to have self parking as we tend to come and go a lot and it really gets annoying having to call down to valet to always get our car ready (not to mention tipping!) For us, valet service is kind of like the butler service, not something we really take advantage of.

The resort itself is beautiful with lots of winding pathways lined with native trees and shrubs. There are multiple pools including an adult only one and for the most part they didn't feel very busy thanks to size of the pool areas. Word is they are going to construct a large water park that should appeal to older kids! Look for it to open late in 2020.

We ate several meals at the hotel's restaurants and for the most part the food was pretty good. Nothing spectacular but far from being bad as well. It was especially good by the pool and the pool cocktails were delectable

Overall the villa was awesome and if we'd stayed at this resort again I don't think we'd be able to stay in a regular hotel room, it would have to be in one of the villas!

October 8 Update: 20% Bonus for converting hotel points to Etihad Guest, Double Avios on all Accor Hotel stays Worldwide including Fairmont & more bonus offers

Today was primarily a bonus offer day on our websites! There are definitely a couple you may want to check out.

The first offer is more so for our mileage and program maximizers as it is quite program specific. It is the return of Etihad Guest's transfer bonus offer. This is similar in vain to Aeroplan's hotel transfer bonus offers we often feature on here. With this bonus you'll get 20% bonus Etihad Guest miles when you convert points from hotel and financial partners (unfortunately Amex Canada is not participating this time) As with almost all these transfer bonuses your best bet is transferring points from Marriott Bonvoy. When you convert 60,000 Bonvoy Points Marriott will kick in an additional 5,000 miles. In this case that means you can get 30,000 Etihad Guest miles for the 60,000 Bonvoy points (25,000 + 20%). Etihad isn't a program overly utilized by many Canadians but they do have sweet spots in their program such as redeeming miles to fly Business Class between Prague and Seoul on Czech Airlines. This redemption is only 25,610 Etihad Guest miles one way! Learn more about the transfer offer here.

---

The second bonus you may want to check out is the new Iberia Plus bonus offer for stays at Accor Hotels Worldwide including our coveted Fairmont Hotels. The reason you may want to pay more attention to this offer is that Iberia Plus has the best earn rates (conversion rates that is) with Accor Hotels out of all the hotel's airline partners. Basically the points convert 1:1 and you may think why would I want to credit to Iberia instead of Aeroplan as I use the latter program more. The main reason why is that Iberia Plus' currency is Avios. Yes the same currency as British Airways Executive Club and you can transfer the Avios from Iberia to British Airways so long as you have your accounts linked for 90 days. BA's own earn rate at Accor is 2:1 so you would earn half the normal amount of points compared to the earn rate with Iberia (not taking into account this bonus!) Learn more about the bonus here!

October 7 Update: Maximizing the elite status benefits from The Platinum Card from American Express and YYC's Chinook Lounge will close down when WestJet's lounge opens

Back in 2016 and again in 2018 we wrote some blog posts that highlight how you can use the elite status benefits from The Platinum American Express Card to get yourself even more status memberships. The posts are very popular but tend to get buried in quickly in the flurry of blog posts that we do have on the Rewards Canada blog so today we officially launched it as it's own feature on the mian Rewards Canada website! You'll be able to find it at http://rwrds.ca/AmexPlatinumStatus so be sure to book mark as that will be one we will consistently update. Even if you have read the other two posts I would recommend re-reading the new feature as we have expanded the details of the status matches and made sure everything in the feature is current as of today. You'll even notice that one hotel status, that of Choice Privileges has changed - it is no longer a straight up status match, you now need to have one Cambria Hotel stay to receive it. You can read the entire feature here.

As you know, last week we detailed the news from WestJet on their first Flagship lounge that will be opening in Calgary. We were left with a  question that we now have the answer to. The question was what is going to happen to the Chinook Lounge that WestJet took over earlier this year. I reached out to the Calgary Airport Authority and they told me that lounge will close down for good when the new WestJet lounge opens. They did state that there is always the possibility a third party lounge provider may come in and open a domestic lounge but at the time of writing this that is not the case. It does make sense however since the majority of domestic flights out of YYC are on WestJet and Air Canada and both have their own lounges. Plus you have the transborder and international Aspire lounges. This does mean there is the potential for there being no lounges to access at YYC on the domestic side with programs like Priority Pass. I did reach out to WestJet about the possibility of their lounge be open to these third party programs and for the time being they are not confirming which, if any at all, will have access to the lounge. WestJet will reveal those details in the future as the opening of the lounge approaches. To learn more about Priority Pass and other lounge access providers visit Rewards Canada's Guide to Business Class Lounge Access
