Summary of global hotel systemwide bonus points promotions - April Edition

One of the easiest ways to rack up lots of hotel points is to take advantage of the systemwide bonuses that come from many of the big chain programs and also from the lesser known programs. In fact, right now it should be rare for you NOT to earn a bonus. Unless you are staying at a boutique hotel or perhaps an independent hotel most other hotels out there have a bonus. So take advantage of it! These systemwide bonuses simply require you to register beforehand and they do not affect hotel pricing as long as you book a point eligible rate which are most rates out there. Of course booking through a third party site like Expedia or Rocketmiles does not count as most chains only award points on bookings that are made directly with them.  Without further ado here are all the current promotions that are available to everyone:

April 10 Update: More confirmed American Express Multiplier locations, Amtrak Guest Rewards changes inactivity policy without notice & more!

We have completed another update to our American Express Cobalt Card Confirmed Multiplier Locations. Despite the not so good news from earlier this week that the 5x points on Eats & Drinks will be capped at $30K spending annually you'll still want to know where you can earn those 5x or 2x or even 1x points. So this feature will not go away, and in fact, even though we named it the Cobalt Confirmed Multiplier locations it in reality can be used for other Amex cards that have dining bonuses like the 3x points that was recently added to The Platinum Card from American Express or even the 4x points for the Scotiabank Gold American Express card. You can visit the feature here and see new additions from Toronto, Calgary and the Palm Springs area. Thanks again to all of our readers who have been contributing to this piece!

Heads up if you use Amtrak's services from Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver and are a member of their Guest Rewards program. Without notice they have changed the expiration of their points from 36 months to 24 months. This is an inactivity rule that is, as long as you have qualifying activity in your account once every 24 months you are good to go and is inline with lots of programs out there but still to change this without any notice to its members is not a good way to keep your program in the good books. April 9 Update: Alaska Airlines increasing mileage redemption rates for Icelandair economy class, bonus Petro-Points for RBC linked cards and 4x Aeroplan miles at Costco.ca

Alaska Airlines is raising the mileage requirements for redeeming Mileage Plan miles on Icelandair flights as of April 15. Below are the old and new rates for redeeming between Canada and Europe on Icelandair. As you can see it is only Economy class being affected but that is where the majority of redemptions happen. As always compare cash pricing versus miles when booking - especially on a carrier like Icelandair who are known for lower economy class fares to begin with, in many cases you may be better off using cash and saving the miles for a different redemption that provides bigger cash savings.

If you have linked your RBC credit card to your Petro-Points account check your inbox for this email offer of up to 5,000 bonus Petro-Points when buying fuel at Petro-Canada. There is a link in the email for you to load offer so be sure you don't just read it, click through to register.

Coming to you a little late with this Aeroplan offer. You can earn 4x Aeroplan miles for Costco.ca purchases until April 14. Find out more here.

Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for April - These cards provide some of the best value out of their welcome bonuses

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of April! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards that have very good acquisition (sign up) offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the just sign up bonus, but when most or all of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when you grab them strictly for the sign up rewards.  This month we're back to adding one annual fee card into the mix along with four cards that offer first year free waivers.

This month the list has the same cards as we saw in March although one card has seen a slight decrease in value, the BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard. The card no longer offers the companion flight benefit we have seen for the past few months. There were other cards we consider this month such as the HSBC World Elite Mastercard since it is first year free and offers up a higher sign up bonus of up to 60,000 points but it has quite a large amount of spend required to get the full bonus. We also considered the CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Card with its current $120 travel credit offer on top of the sign up bonus but if you don't use that credit you are out the $120 annual fee.

Here are our top 5 credit card sign up offers for April (in alphabetical order)

BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard - 3,000 Miles  (Apply here)
This almost best ever sign up bonus for an AIR MILES co-branded card continues on our Top 5 sign up list thanks to its 3,000 miles sign up bonus (worth ~$300 or more) and no annual fee in the first year! The only difference from last month is the loss of the companion flight offer. Even if you aren't a fan of AIR MILES the fact you can get 3,000 miles and them use them as cash rewards for no cost to you should be enough to go out and get this card. Please note: new Collectors have Miles automatically deposited into their Dream Account, not their Cash account. Minimum Income: $80,000 Personal or $150,000 Household

BMO BMO World Elite Mastercard - 35,000 Points  (Apply here)
The card offers a 35,000 point sign up bonus that is worth $250 in travel and since the card is first year free right now (they bill you $150 and then rebate after several months) that means your $250 in travel is free and yes you even get the LoungeKey access and 4 lounge passes included in that first year free.  Minimum Income: $80,000 Personal or $150,000 Household
Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card - 60,000 Points (Apply here)
First time on the list as a Marriott Card but not actually since the SPG Amex was featured here many a time! This is the only card on the list that has an annual fee right of the bat but the sign up bonus and other benefits more than make up for it. The 60,000 points, awarded after spending $1,500 on the card in three months are worth at least $600 in our minds which means after subtracting the annual fee you are coming out ahead by $480. In reality you can pull even more value out of the card (into four figures) as we outlined in our post A look at how The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card provides huge value!   Minimum Income: N/A

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card - 30,000 Miles (Apply here)
One of the more popular offers on our site right now with card offering up to  30,000 Aeroplan miles and the annual fee rebated in the first year! This is one of the richest offers yet for this card. The bonus is awarded as follows: 15,000 Aeroplan Miles when you make your first Purchase with your Card + 15,000 Aeroplan Miles when you spend $1,000 within 90 days of Account opening. Depending on how you redeem those Aeroplan miles should be worth no less than $450 but more likely closer to $600 or more! Minimum Income: $60,000 Personal or $100,000 Household

TD First Class Visa Infinite Card - 80,000 Points (Apply here)
We continue with the best offer we've ever seen for this card! You get the standard sign up bonus of 20,000 points after the first purchase made on the card and another 60,000 if you spend $1,000 on the card in first 90 days having it. And all of this with a first year annual fee rebate! Those 80,000 points translate to $320 worth of travel credits for any travel booking or $400 worth of travel for bookings made via Expedia For TD. Minimum Income: $60,000 Personal or $100,000 Household

If you went for all these cards you ultimately could end up with nearly $1,900 in travel credits but even if you only take on one or two you are helping your travel budget significantly at no cost other than regular credit card spend. We don't really recommend getting all five in one month unless you know you can meet the minimum spend for them all at once, rather you'd want to pick one or two right now, perhaps another next month and so on.

American Express Cobalt Card to have 5x points on Eats & Drinks capped at $30,000 per year starting this August

If you follow Rewards Canada on Twitter you'll have seen this news late last week. On Thursday Anshul at Points, Miles and Bling alerted us to a Reddit thread where someone who just received a new American Express Cobalt Card and the welcome package contained an insert. This insert stated that as of August 20, 2019 the card would earn 5x points on the Eats & Drinks for annual spending up to $30,000. After that amount the earn rate drops to 1 point per dollar. and the $30,000 annual cap resets to zero on the card anniversary date. I emailed American Express on Thursday night and received a response around the same time the American Express social media team on Twitter confirmed this change.

This is not the news any of us like to hear that what was once heralded as unlimited earning and a major reason this card is ranked number one in Canada, is now being curtailed. I did wonder, as many others did, how could American Express offer 5x unlimited points on the eats and drinks category and many speculated it wouldn't last and they were right. At least the category rate has not been cut, it stays at 5x points but like some of this card's competitors there is now a spending cap for that category. Or if you take the example of the Capital One Aspire World Elite Mastercard, at least the card isn't being totally discontinued since the economics of even 2% back on all spending for that card was too much for them.

If you can take it as such, the good news is that the spending cap will reset/start on August 20th. So if you have already spent $30,000 on the card in this category or will before August 20, you get to start at zero that day and spend to your heart's content until you hit $30,000 to ensure you are earning the most points possible.

As I mentioned on Twitter, I believe this won't affect the majority of the cardholders and the target demographic for the card and some on Twitter agree while others disagree:

Both of the above tweets are valid - neither is wrong. When American Express came out with this card in 2017 it was being targeted to the Millennial demographic based on the points earning system, the welcome bonus split monthly and the annual fee also being charged on a monthly basis. The mistake they made is that the strength of the earn wasn't lost on all the other demographics. Heck, we touted it as a great card for anyone and everyone, not just Millennials, that's why we ranked it number one. I pushed this card on families as there many out there who spend a lot of money on eats and drinks and they can easily break the $30,000 level. I know we do here at the Rewards Canada family. I also believe it wasn't only gamers of the system who may have forced this change but all of us Baby Boomers and Gen X'ers who can spend and do spend on a lot in this famed category.  Still I would believe we probably only make up 20-30% of the Cobalt cardholders out there but as Jake states, we are losing out even for using the card properly. Add in the Millennials who do play the points and miles game and it has become too much.

So what should you do if you have the card or are considering the card? Here are my recommendations:
  1. Don't do anything - if you don't spend more than $30,000 annually in the Eats and Drinks category this change doesn't affect you
  2. Get a second card - My wife and I each have our own Cobalt accounts which means we will each have a $30,000 cap effectively allowing us to spend $60,000 per year on Eats and Drinks and get the 5x points on all that spending.
  3. Get the Platinum Card from American Express - it earns 3x points per dollar on Dining only (no grocery stores) and that isn't capped and it earns the top end Membership Rewards points versus Membership Rewards Select (in reality this only matters for those converting to Aeroplan, British Airways or their other airline partners)
  4. If you spend more than $40,000 in the eats and drinks category and don't convert points to Marriott, get the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card, it earns 4x points on dining, entertainment and groceries and above 40,000 you'll be ahead of the Cobalt card. Here are some spending and points earning examples (not taking into account annual fees or welcome bonuses)
    • $30,000 per year - Cobalt Card earns 150,000 points (worth $1,500 min.) while Scotia's Gold Amex will earn 120,000 points (worth $1,200)
    • $40,000 per year - both cards earn 160,000 points (worth $1,600)
    • $50,000+ per year - Cobalt Card earns 170,000 points (worth $1,700) while Scotia earns 200,000 points (worth $2,000) and will stay $300 ahead of Cobalt after $50,000 when the Scotia card drops to 1 point as well
(Please note that this is only looking at Eats and drinks and doesn't take into account other points earning like 2x on Travel/Transit for the Cobalt Card and 4x for Scotia for Gas etc.)
Ultimately you will need to run your numbers and see what works best for you. I believe most Canadians, at least the demographic that is targeted by this card, which are Millennials won't be affected by this change. Who will be affected are those of us who do spend lots on the card, either with legitimate purchases or those gaming the system. It's all about give and take, American Express gave and some really took to maximize their earning and now it's changing. This is the vicious cycle we are part of in the wacky world of loyalty.

Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below! Will you be keeping the card? Moving to another? Maybe keeping it to spend to $30,000 and then getting another card for more spending? Let us know below!
