The world of loyalty is remaining quiet this month but that is typical for August and summer in general. Watch for lots of news, program changes, enhancements and devaluations to come this September. The good news is that bonus offers never stop and we have two really good new offers to tell you about today.

Marriott Rewards has decided to return to its roots as their next systemwide promotion is once again called MegaBonus instead of the Getaway Bonus as the previous iteration was called. No matter what the name is the bonus is essentially the same and just like the previous Getaway Bonus offer there aren't any free night certificate options only bonus points. The offer is definitely weaker without the free nights option that we used to see as you typically would get a free night at either a Cat 1-4 or Cat 1-5 hotel after only two stays. It was a great reward that was easily achievable. Nonetheless bonus points are a still very valuable but it will take you more stays to get to the equivalent free night. It is a somewhat surprising move as the Free Night offer provides a higher percentage of breakage versus the bonus point offers.

The other big bonus comes to us from SAS EuroBonus and it is to celebrate their new all business class Stavanger to Houston flight. The offer provides Gold Elite status after one round trip on the new route and Diamond Status after two trips. Granted I don't think too many of us Canucks will jump on this but then again if you aren't going to reach status with Air Canada or other Star Aliiance members it might be worthwhile to jump on a cheap flight or a North American award to ticket to Houston to get yourself status via the new SAS flight.

Earning Stories: 7,280 Starpoints on a 4 Night Stay at the Westin Desert Willow Villas

 

We continue the newest feature here on Rewards Canada, Earning Stories. For years we have provided you with the details on earning points and miles (both regular earning and bonus opportunities) but we haven't really shown those actual offers in action. That is where Earning Stories comes in. We are showing you the actual earning process and how valuable these earning opportunities can be.

This post continues with everything we earned and redeemed with my family's recent trip to Palm Springs. Here are the posts already up on the blog for our earn and burn:

Our stay was at the Westin Desert Willow Villas in Palm Desert on a AAA with resort credit rate.  I booked it using this promotion we had listed on Rewards Canada's SPG Bonus Starpoints page:

The Earn Away Get Away promotion was Starwood Preferred Guest's recent systemwide promotion and since our stay included a Sunday night we earned the Triple Starpoints on the entire stay.

Even more points were earned as I hold Starwood Gold Elite Status, a 50% bonus on the base points plus I choose the 250 Starpoints SPG Gold amenity over the free drink at the bar. If you don't stay frequently enough at Starwood Hotels to earn Elite Status you can also get it with the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express Card (when you spend $30,000 in a year) or automatically with The Platinum Card from American Express to get the elite bonuses.

We also chose to use the Go Green option of not receiving housekeeping and in return we got 500 Starpoints per day (excluding check out day)

Overall the stay earned 7,280 Starpoints which are enough points for a standard room free night award at a Category 3 Hotel or for a cash+points redemption at a Category 5 Hotel. Since I don't have any SPG award nights planned at this time these points are going to be held in my account for the time being.

As you can see by registering and taking advantage of this bonus offer along with the Go Green option, we earned quite a few Starpoints on a stay that we were going to do no matter what! Everyday people have stays like this that are not earning any bonus points or even in some cases no points at all since the people aren't part of the hotel's program! We cannot reiterate enough that not only should you join a hotel program to earn points (or airline miles) but always register for bonus point promotions even if you think that you may not use it.

Tips for Hotel Stays
- Watch the rates that include bonus miles - If there is a bonus most of my stays do earn those extra points but a lot of hotel offers for bonus points also come with higher rates so be sure to check other rates like AAA, Senior Rates, etc. as those could be a better deal than the paying for the extra points. For a complete list of hotel bonus offers see this page on the main Rewards Canada site.
- Read the fine print - When a bonus offer is available be sure that your stay meets the criteria. Those criteria can include certain rates, select days of the week or multiple night stays.
- If you are staying at a hotel/hotel chain that isn't your primary program chain you may be better off posting that stay to a preferred airline rather than earning the hotel points. You'll still have to join that hotel chains program but set your earning preference to your preferred airline.

In the bonus offers section you'll see that the sign up bonus for the Cathay Pacific Asia Miles Platinum Card from RBC has been increased to 15,000 miles from the usual 10,000 miles. Even with the extra miles this is a relatively weak sign up bonus and the card itself is in the middle to lower end of the pack for airline cards in Canada. Really the card is very specific to those who fly on Cathay Pacific lots and have Asia Miles as their primary frequent flyer program.

Earning Stories: 5,200 Aeroplan Miles & 250 Gold Plus Rewards Points on a 4 day Hertz Car Rental

Today we start a new feature on Rewards Canada called Earning Stories. Similar to our Redemption Stories which we have run for a few years these Earning Stories will look at select mileage/points earning actions that we ourselves and also our readers have accomplished that are worth sharing. There are so many ways to earn miles and points that if we covered them all there would hundreds of posts each day so these Earning Stories will look at those significant ones that usually involve a bonus offer promotion or perhaps a free miles/points offer that we weren't sure would post but did end up receiving. If you are a miles/points rookie be sure to keep an eye on these stories as they are another great way to learn on how to maximize your miles and points and to help fulfill our mission of being Canada's Gateway to more Miles more Points and more Rewards.

There have already been a few posts surrounding our recent trip to Palm Springs and this one is for our car rental. We rented a standard SUV for 4 days with a final cost around US$280.  I booked it using this promotion we had listed on Rewards Canada's Aeroplan Bonus Miles page:

There is another similar offer on our page that offered 1,000 miles per day but that would have only been a 4,000 mile bonus versus the 5,000 that this offer provided on rentals of 3 or more days. The rate was as good or better than the no bonus mile rates and I was also surprised to see that Hertz was cheaper than most other car rental companies for this type of vehicle which made booking this offer a no brainer! The booking was simple via Hertz and I also provided my Hertz Gold Plus Rewards number so that we could the typically shorter line for members at the PSP car rental counter.

At the outset of the rental we ended up earning the 200 base Aeroplan Miles plus the 5,000 bonus miles from the offer and also since I provided my Hertz Gold Plus Rewards number we also earned 250 points in that program for this rental.

Overall I think this was a great earning action for the rental and for what we paid. We like to rent SUVs but I could see people getting an even better return on a promotion like this by renting a smaller vehicle that does not cost as much!

Tips for Car Rentals
- Watch the rates that include bonus miles - For us it is about 50/50 in terms of earning bonuses on rentals, many times rates are out there that are quite a bit cheaper and provide more value versus paying more and earning more miles. - Read the fine print - When a bonus offer is available be sure that your rental meets the criteria. Those are primarily minimum number of rental days and vehicle type. There are many promotions that don't get awarded on the smallest/cheapest vehicles.
- Join the Car Rental company's program - Hertz Gold Plus Rewards, National Emerald Club and others all provide great benefits such as dedicated check in counters, bypass check in counters and more.
