Today was extremely quiet here at Rewards Canada when considering the craziness that happened yesterday with the whole TD-CIBC-Aeroplan storm!

Rewards Canada reader Bill W. forwarded this new Starwood initiative to me. He was selected as part of group of SPG members to participate in Aloft Hotels new Smart Check-in program. Right now it is an exclusive program at select Aloft locations in the U.S. which provides a way to bypass checking in at the front desk. Here is an excerpt from the email:

• You'll be sent a special Aloft-brand SPG® card that will double as a room key, allowing you to bypass the front desk and go straight to your room whenever you stay at participating Aloft hotels.

• On the day of your arrival, we'll send a message to your mobile device containing your room number.

• When you arrive at your participating Aloft hotel, skip the front desk and go directly to your room. Just touch your Aloft-brand SPG card to the door to unlock it — you'll be checked in automatically and have full access to the Aloft front desk throughout your stay.

The U.S. government has filed an anti-trust case against the merger of American Airlines and US Airways. At this time it doesn't affect either airlines Frequent Flyer programs and if anything will only delay the merger or if it does stop the merger both programs will likely continue business as usual and then we should at least see the ever popular bonus on buying US Airways Dividend Miles stay alive.

It's Official! TD Bank Group and Aimia (Aeroplan) confirm agreement; TD to be the new primary issuer of Aeroplan credit cards

Here is the an excerpt from today's press release from TD Bank confirming what I have (and most other people) have thought would happen:

TD Bank Group and Aimia confirm agreement

• Enhances TD's position as a leading North American credit card provider
• Offers more travel rewards choices for customers
• Will add significant growth to the premium travel segment of TD's credit card portfolio
• Discussions are underway regarding current portfolio of Aeroplan credit card accounts

TORONTO, Aug. 12, 2013 /CNW/ - TD Bank Group (TD) (TSX and NYSE: TD) and Aimia Inc. (Aimia) (TSX: AIM) today announced that TD will become the primary credit card issuer for Aeroplan, a loyalty program owned by Aimia, starting on January 1, 2014.

New choices for customers
"We are thrilled to have this opportunity to work with Aeroplan to offer even more choice to our customers, and to grow the premium travel segment of our credit card portfolio," said Michael Rhodes, Executive Vice President, North American Credit Cards and Merchant Services, TD Bank Group. "The co-branded Aeroplan credit cards will complement TD's already strong line-up of cards, and allow our customers to select from an even wider range of options for earning great travel rewards."
Beginning in January 2014, TD will offer a full suite of co-branded Aeroplan Visa credit cards, giving customers several ways to earn miles for flights and enjoy other features and benefits of the Aeroplan program, including benefits within Aeroplan's new Distinction recognition program that launches in January. Customers will be able to choose from enhanced premium, premium and mid-market co-branded Aeroplan credit cards, each providing different benefits and earn rates. It is expected that the new co-branded credit card line-up will also include a credit card for U.S. residents and a credit card for Canadian small business owners.
"The new suite of co-branded credit cards will bring together Aeroplan's premier loyalty program with TD's award-winning customer service and convenience to build on our position as a leading North American credit card provider," added Rhodes. "We look forward to providing more information about these cards in early 2014."

Ongoing Discussions
There are ongoing active discussions among TD, Aimia and CIBC about a broad framework that would see CIBC retain cards held by their franchise banking customers which are about half the portfolio and TD acquire the remainder. The parties will work vigorously to try to reach agreement, complete due diligence and finalize definitive documentation by August 26, 2013. There can be no assurances that an agreement will be reached.
TD previously advised that the Aeroplan arrangement would not have a material impact on 2014 earnings and would make a solid contribution to 2015 earnings. TD does not expect a significant change in that outlook as a result of the proposed deal but will provide additional disclosure if an arrangement is reached.

Now we just need to wait and see as to what TD's offerings will be on these new cards! Based on this line "enhanced premium, premium and mid-market co-branded Aeroplan credit cards" it is likely we'll see a Visa Infinite, Visa Platinum and base level Visa Aeroplan card.  There will also be a new card for the US market which I can only assume will replace the current MBNA Aeroplan card offered to US residents.

The big news in the Canadian loyalty space continues to be speculation on what is going to happen today with the whole CIBC/Aeroplan/TD love triangle. RBC sent out a press release stating that they believe their RBC Avion card will be the big winner when and if the change to TD happens. The Montreal Gazette ran a piece this morning about while other media outlets will likely have coverage today as well. I don't think we'll here anything until late tonight but more than likely earyl next week. Stay tuned though as we here at Rewards Canada will keep you up to date on this story.

Aug 8 Update: One day left for a CIBC response to Aeroplan/TD, 4x MileagePlus miles with Avis, next Volia Hotel Rewards systemwide bonus

Another day of adding lots of new bonus offers!

I am starting to get a few phone calls from the media and other inquiries regarding the potential split of CIBC and Aeroplan as the deadline for CIBC to respond to the Aeroplan and TD agreement is tomorrow. While I don't have a crystal ball as to what is going to happen I am going to wager a guess that the split will happen. CIBC is investing heavily in a new credit card product to come out later this year or early next year and would have to put up even more cash to match the Aeroplan/TD agreement. That is a lot of capital to outlay even though CIBC could afford it but why would they want to further dilute their credit card portfolio by keeping Aeroplan and adding a new card to the mix? That is unless the new card being planned replaced the current Aventura cards. Ultimately we will have to wait until tomorrow or even early next week to see what transpires unless one of our Aimia/Aeroplan contacts/readers wants to share the details sooner. Coast Hotels: 50% off award nights, upgrades and parking

Coast Hotels is the small Western Canadian based hotel chain with properties in four Canadian provinces and territories and four western U.S. states. Their loyalty program, Coast Rewards, is running a nice summer award sale that is offering 50% of award nights (Comfort/Superior rooms), room upgrades and/or free parking. The offer is available for stays until Sep 18 and judging by the info in the email you have to call them for the redemption to be able to get the 50% off as there is no mention of it on their website nor does it show up when you try to redeem online. Get a free lounge pass when you book flights via KLM mobile

KLM is offering a set amount of free lounge passes to the KLM Crowne Lounge in Amsterdam when you book your KLM flight via KLM mobile. All you have to do is visit KLM Mobile on your phone or mobile device and book a flight by August 13th to get a free lounge pass. At time of posting there were only 142 passes left to give away so your best bet is to book sooner than later to snag one of these passes. Full details can be found here

American: Earn 2,000 Bonus AAdvantage Miles and save up to 25% when you purchase AAdvantage miles

Every month it seems like American AAdvantage is releasing a different buy miles offer. This time it is a small bonus but the miles come at a discounted price. If you purchase the maximum amount of 60,000 Miles you will end up paying 2.06 cents pre tax (2.2 incl tax) per mile which isn't too bad for an AAdvantage mile purchase but when you consider you can buy US Airways Dividend Miles for around 1.75 cents and likely be able to convert those to AAdvantage in the near future it doesn't look that good.

500 Free Points in the new Preferred Hotel Group iPrefer program

John over at LoyaltyLobby has done a great job of covering the upcoming changes to the iPrefer program from the Preferred Hotel Group and thanks to him we found out about this offer.
