October 24 Update: Aeroplan accumulation changes on Thai Airways and convert hotel points to MileagePlus for a 25% bonus

Aeroplan has announced more accumulation changes. This time for flying on Thai Airways. The lowest economy fares have taken hits. (Source Aeroplan)

Effective for travel December 1, 2016, earn 50% of the miles you fly in booking classes T, K or S. For travel until November 30, 2016, earn 100%.

Effective for travel December 1, 2016, booking classes G, V and W will no longer be eligible for accumulation. For travel until November 30, 2016, earn 50%.

AIR MILES members can earn 60 bonus Reward Miles for spending $40 or more until the 27th at Rexall. Get the coupon here.

Japan Airlines Mileage Bank has announced some changes to their program. The good news is that they are moving to one way award tickets costing only 50% of the round trip cost for flights within Japan. There are some other minor changes including the move to expiring miles folllowing Japan Standard time rather than your timezone. JMB miles expire 36 months after the end of the month they are earned in. All these changes take effect April 1, 2017. Find out more here and here.

July 30 Update: WestJet to add 767s in 2015, Thai Airways reverses Award Chart devaluations, Starwood targeted bonuses return

WestJet confirms the purchase of widebody aircraft and a program that listened to their members!

Big news from the folks at WestJet! As we mentioned a few weeks ago, they were exploring adding widebody aircraft to their fleet and as of yesterday this has been confirmed! WestJet will be buying four 767-300ERW aircraft from Boeing (used planes that will be retrofitted) that will enter service in 2015. After flights within Canada and the U.S. the planes will be used on Alberta-Hawaii flights once they receive their ETOPS ratings and we can only assume that they will be used on Europe or other long haul International flights in the summer of 2016. Sometime ago we brought you the news that Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus was going to have a major award chart devaluation. Well it appears they have listened to all the customer complaints and reversed their decision to do so! I am sure that many of you are like me and wish the North American programs that have had devaluations over the past few years would have done the same! (Source View from the Wing)

More Aeroplan or Star Alliance flight earning and redemption options keep coming up. The latest is Air Canada adding flights between Montreal and Curacaoin January 2015. (Source: Airlineroute.net)

We reached out to TD mbna for some clarification on the end of their partnership with Choice Hotels for the mbna Choice Privileges MasterCard to see what happens to those cardholders who have the card or just applied by June 9th to get the larger sign up bonus. The good news is that it looks like you can keep the card until Sep 27 and also get the larger sign up bonus as long you meet the minimum spend by July as was requried int he promotion.

"Choice Hotel customers will have all the same benefits of the program up until the 27th of September. Any regular or bonus points they incur will be added to their account. All customers will receive a notification of the termination by August. This notification will explain the termination and what will be happening to their Choice Hotel points. The notification will also cover the terms and conditions of their new rewards program."

Thai Airways is making some drastic, negative changes to their Royal Orchid Plus flight awards this September. I know there aren't that many Canadian's using Royal Orchid Plus but for those of you who are should look at cashing out your miles before September 1st as many award flights are going up in price (as much as double, for example Bangkok-Los Angeles in First Class goes from 230,000 ROP miles to 460,000 ROP miles!) June 20 Update: Fast Track to SPG Gold Elite Status, Delta Hotels sale, Thai Airways discounted award tickets

I hope that everyone else in the YYC area are staying as dry as possible after our torrential downpour overnight and this morning. The sun is actually peaking through the clouds as I write this! Thoughts go out to those in Canmore, Black Diamond, Turner Valley and High River whose homes are being devastated by the flash flooding that is occurring.

Yesterday LoyaltyLobby passed along an offer for a fast track to Gold Elite Status with the Starwood Preferred Guest program. Now the offer is meant for World Elite and World MasterCard holders in the Asia Pacific region who register and complete one stay at a Starwood Hotel in the Asia Pacific region. However, similar to an offer from Hilton over a year ago you only need to input the first 6 digits of the credit card and these can be found on Google so there is a potential for anyone to take advantage of this new SPG offer. I did take advantage of the Hilton offer and am now Gold until early next year with the HHonors program, it worked for me but for some others it didn't. So if you have an upcoming stay in the Asia Pacific region you can try the same thing with this SPG promotion. There are no guarantees that it will work but it doesn't hurt to try.
