Applications no longer being accepted for the Chase Amazon.ca Rewards Visa

Chase Canada's credit card portfolio is sure shrinking fast. Sure the card hasn't been discontinued but as of April 3rd applications were no longer being accepted for the Chase Amazon.ca Rewards Visa card. We first saw it reported on Rewardscardcanada.com (yes, yes we know it's a play on our name and advantageous for their SEO but the gentleman behind it is a good guy) and we also mentioned it on our twitter feed yesterday. Now that this card is no longer available it leaves only the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Visa card as the only publicly available card from Chase. It also makes the Marriott Visa card the only one in Canada with no foreign transaction fee as the Amazon card also had this feature.

I have reached out to Chase to get more details on whether the card will actually be discontinued for those who hold the card or if they will get to continue using it indefinitely. Typically however when applications close it means the card will eventually disappear as well (think Delta and IHG cards of the past!)

I know a lot of you love this card because of the no annual fee tied in with no foreign transaction fees. If the card is discontinued what do you think you'll replace it with?

Tangerine Money Back MasterCard losing value on April 29th

Lots of buzz surrounding the news that came out last week about the Tangerine Money Back Credit Card. The card that sort of stormed onto the market last year already had one change where its coveted 4% back in select categories for the first three months of having the card was removed earlier this year and now the following is happening on April 29th:
  • All spend that doesn't fall under your 2 or 3 selected bonus categories drops from 1% to 0.5%. That's right, half a percent
  • The foreign transaction fee moves from 1.5% to 2.5%. Making it equal to most cards in Canada
  • Some other fees are also being affected, here is the whole list of changes:
This card has quickly turned from being one of the better ones out there to just an average cash back card. It is really unfortunate to see this change especially when some other cards are being enhanced to provide better cash back rewards. When considering a cash back card you should always refer to our Cash Back Comparison chart to see what card will work best for you.

Here is what remains the same on the card:

What are everyone's thoughts? Do you currently have the card and will you keep it after these changes?

You can now redeem WestJet Rewards dollars on select Delta flights

Although it hasn't been officially announced Officially announced now by WestJet, news broke last week about WestJet Rewards' first airline redemption partner! You will now be able to redeem WestJet Rewards dollars for select flights on none other than Delta Airlines. It has been in the works for quite a few months and WestJet has alluded to it for sometime now. Some thought it may have been Qantas first (based on their press release from last year) but WestJet and Delta have a relationship going back quite a few years now so it only makes sense for the Atlanta based airline to be WJR's first airline redemption partner. On the flip side you can now also redeem Delta SkyMiles for flights on WestJet (info on that will come in a separate post)

Unlike redemptions on WestJet where one WestJet dollar equals one Canadian dollar towards airfare, the WestJet Rewards redemptions for travel on Delta are a flat rate award chart style. To start the redemption portion of the partnership there are only a few select Delta routes where you will be able to redeem WestJet dollars for and you will only be able to redeem for economy class at this time.

These are the cities that Delta serves that you will be able to redeem for with WestJet Rewards
  • Paris, France
  • Rome, Italy
  • Madrid, Spain
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • Hong Kong, China
  • Shanghai, China
  • Sydney, Australia
Here are the WestJet dollar requirements for each area:
  • Canada to Europe: 400 WestJet dollars each way (800 round trip)
  • Canada to Japan or China: 640 each way (1,280 round trip)
  • Canada to Australia: 750 each way (1,500 round trip)
All the above do not include taxes or fees
Above rates are subject to change when this new redemption feature is fully rolled out
The above rates are valid from any Canadian city that WestJet serves which can make this very valuable in those cities where fares tend to be high, for example redeeming 1,500 WestJet dollars between Vancouver and Sydney may not be the most ideal but redeeming that amount from Gander or Halifax can prove to be a great deal.

Here is are some examples of Delta redemption options we found on WestJet's site:

We spoke with WestJet a few weeks ago about the new options and the rates appear to be tied into the credit card earn rate with WestJet while using Aeroplan as their primary comparison focus rather than many of the travel anywhere credit cards that are available. They also advised us that the redemption rates showing on their website are subject to change when this redemption option is officially announced and rolled out completely.

With that said let's compare what it takes you to get that round trip economy class ticket between WestJet and Aeroplan, strictly with credit card spend on their most popular credit cards:

WestJet RBC World Elite
MasterCard
TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite
Canada to Europe
Minimum spend: $40,000 $40,000
Maximum spend: $53,334 $60,000
Canada to Japan or China
Minimum spend: $64,000 $50,000
Maximum spend: $85,334 $75,000
Canada to Australia
Minimum spend: $75,000 $60,000
Maximum spend: $100,000 $90,000

As you can see the WestJet card comes out ahead for their flights on Delta to Europe but for Japan or China and Australia you come out behind in spend requirements. Remember though this is just a baseline comparison for credit card spend and does not take into account other earning from flights and partners or even other potential credit cards. You also have to take into account fees and surcharges that will be tacked onto these flights so for a proper comparison you should look at United flights with Aeroplan since those will route via the U.S. like WestJet's flights with Delta and both airlines will have comparable taxes and fees.

Overall this is great news for WestJet Rewards members. The more options you have to use your dollars the better. It will be nice to see if more Delta flights are added for cities within the U.S., South America and even Africa. Also don't expect this to be the only redemption partner added this year, as we already know Qantas is coming down the line but there is at least one more very exciting partner that will be also be added!

In-Store AIR MILES Cash redemption to resume on April 5th

Great news for AIR MILES Cash collectors - you'll once again be able to use your miles for in-store redemption starting this Wednesday.

Here is a major excerpt from today's press release:

TORONTO, April 3, 2017 /CNW/ - Today, the AIR MILES® Reward Program announced that in-store AIR MILES Cash redemptions will resume on Wednesday, April 5th at 5:00 a.m. EST. Collector Account security is a top priority for AIR MILES, which is why the company is also announcing a series of additional fraud management policies that will help to enhance Account security for all Collectors.
AIR MILES believes that the policies outlined below, which are a combination of existing and new processes, will help to mitigate fraud risk for Collectors, while enhancing Collector Account security and delivering a user-friendly in-store Collector experience:
Mitigating Fraud In-Store – effective April 5, 2017
  • Collectors will now have a daily cap of $50 for in-store AIR MILES Cash redemptions across all Partners, per Collector Cash Account, per day. This translates to a maximum redemption of 475 Cash Miles per day.
  • In-store AIR MILES Cash redemptions will exclude gift cards and near-cash products (i.e. pre-paid credit cards).
Collector Account Management
  • To access Collector Cash and Dream balances on www.airmiles.ca, Collectors must log in to their Account using their Personal Information Number (PIN).
  • Collectors who forget their PIN are encouraged to use the self-serve tool located on the company's website to create or reset their PIN.
Existing Fraud Detection Activities
  • In-store redemption of AIR MILES Cash prompts an email to the Collector to inform them of the transaction while also providing instructions on what to do if the Collector was not the party who used Cash Miles in-store.
  • AIR MILES' Anti-Fraud Team will continue to monitor patterns of redemption in order to spot irregularities and suspicious activity as quickly as possible.
  • The company will continue to proactively communicate to Collectors if fraud is suspected and will take action to protect their Account.
Additional steps Collectors can take to protect their AIR MILES Cash Account
  • For extra protection, Collectors are encouraged to "lock" their Cash Account. While Cash Accounts are locked, Collectors can continue to get Miles, but no AIR MILES Cash redemptions are possible. Collectors who choose to lock their Cash Account can unlock it quickly, prior to conducting an in-store Cash redemption by using the PIN associated with their Account via www.airmiles.ca/cashlock, the AIR MILES App, or by using our Customer Care automated phone system.
  • Collectors should ensure their email address on file at AIR MILES is up-to-date, enabling the company to send AIR MILES Cash redemption confirmations.
More Customer Service for any additional Collector questions
  • AIR MILES added 30 additional Customer Care Agents and another 30 agents will be added as of Wednesday, April 5th to support Collectors with these changes.
  • As previously announced, the company introduced 24/7 customer support through its Facebook and Twitter social media accounts.
Glad to see this option return so quickly and we are also very happy to see the additional steps brought in by the AIR MILES program to ensure the safety of their member's miles.

Two big take away points from above:

"To access Collector Cash and Dream balances on www.airmiles.ca, Collectors must log in to their Account using their Personal Information Number (PIN)."

Finally! Can't say 100% we were the reason behind this but we addressed this as the biggest issue in our media interviews two weeks ago and in our post on the halting of Cash Redemptions. To quote ourselves:
"And I hope, really hope that AIR MILES does away with the simple input a number and get your balance on their website, make all users type in their PIN before showing the account is valid and has a balance."
This made it very easy for potential thieves to input random collector numbers into the website and see who had big enough cash balances for them to go to a store to redeem them.

"For extra protection, Collectors are encouraged to "lock" their Cash Account. While Cash Accounts are locked, Collectors can continue to get Miles, but no AIR MILES Cash redemptions are possible."

This is a nice feature for collectors, now before heading out to a merchant you can unlock your cash account so that you can redeem and then lock it again afterwards.  Might be a bit of a pain to do this each time but at least you know that your Cash account should be safe

Earn up to 7x Aeroplan Miles for eStore purchases until April 16

Aeroplan has launched a great new bonus for your online shopping! If you funnel your purchases through the Aeroplan eStore until April 16th you'll earn no less than 5x the regular miles normally awarded for each purchase. Of course if you hold Aeroplan status you'll earn more, Silver & Black members will each get 6x the miles while Diamond members get 7x miles.

Of course you have to ensure you triple dip on your purchases by using a points earning credit card for them such as the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card to boost your Aeroplan miles but then we would recommend using a card like the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Visa card for those retailers charging in USD since the card has no foreign transaction fee.

Whether shopping for yourself or someone else (Mother's day is only a month away!) don't wait to get it done, you might as well do it now to score lots more miles! Visit the Aeroplan eStore today to take advantage of this offer!
