Vancouver's Fairmont Pacific Rim now part of Stay Close Buy 1 night get 1 free offer!

Late last night Fairmont Hotels added yet another hotel to their amazing Stay Close offer that provides every 2nd night or 2nd room free for stays at select hotels in Canada and the United States.
Here is our previous coverage of the offers:

The hotel that was added is the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel in Vancouver. If you want to take advantage of the offer here the booking window isn't very long - you have until June 16 to book but their window for stays is much longer than the rest of the hotels - you can book stays until June 30, 2021 for this hotel!

Here's a quick look at the rates for the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotels (July 10-12):

Just like all the other hotels this deal is exactly 50% off the daily rate and is also significantly cheaper than other special rates. The rates must be prepaid in advance however they are fully refundable as long as you cancel in advance. The Fairmont Pacific Rim is showing a cancellation policy of only 24 hours before so there is lots of flexibility compared to the 7 day cancellation policy at the Canadian mountain resorts!

There no black out dates specified for this hotel.

Remember that Fairmont Hotels is now part of the ALL Accor Live Limitless program so stays at Fairmont Hotels will rack up points in that program.

For more details or to book this offer you can do so via these links:

Here are the terms & conditions of the offer for the Pacific Rim Hotel:
Buy one night and receive a complimentary second night during the same stay. A 1 night prepaid fully-refundable deposit is required. This promotion is subject to availability and may not be combined with any other offers, promotions or packages. For stays through June 30, 2021. Blackout dates may apply.

*You may also use your complimentary night as a second room on the same night. Should you wish to do so, please book a two night stay and then you must call the hotel directly to amend the reservation. The reservation will be amended to have two rooms in the same room category for the price of one for one night.

ALL Rewards points may not be redeemed to cover the cost of any charges associated with stays booked on the “Stay Close” offer either at time of booking or during the stay. This includes, but is not limited to charges for room rate/restaurant/in-room dining/spa/golf. Members who book through the “Stay Close” offer will receive the on-property benefits associated with their tier level at time of stay. Members will earn points at standard earn rates for room charges and all eligible spend that is charged to their room during the stay.

Receive a 20% bonus when you buy Best Western Travel Cards for future travel

The offers for future travel just keep on coming! The first one for today comes from Best Western and they are offering a 20% bonus on Best Western Travel/Gift Cards. When you buy a $100 gift card they will give you a $20 bonus card to use. You can buy up to $500 worth of gift cards with this promotion to receive $100 in bonus cards. You also have the choice to buy the cards in CAD or USD which is great for us Canadians seeing that most will be travelling within our own borders this year. Note the terminology difference in the cards – the travel/gift card is a true gift card – that is it has no expiry date as they can’t put one on them due to laws against it in countries like the U.S. and Canada. However the bonus card is not considered as such since it is an incentive and you are not paying cash for it. That means they can put an expiry on the bonus card and have done so. Any bonus cards you receive are only valid until December 31, 2020. Nonetheless if you think you’ll be traveling and staying at Best Western hotels this year then by all means avail of this offer to garner those savings!

Offer details:
Receive a $20 Best Western Bonus Card for every $100 Best Western Travel/Gift Card you purchase. The bonus card is awarded for purchases of up to $500 of gift cards. Learn more and purchase gift cards here. Until Sep 30, 20

June 3 Update: TurboTax offer for RBC cardholders, Amex offer for Pink Martini Queen Street and Canadian Alaska Airlines Mastercards will not see elite benefits like the U.S.

There is a new RBC Offers special out for TurboTax where you can get 20% off Standard, Premier, Self-Employed, Assist & Review, or Assist & Review Self Employed products. See our Guide to RBC Royal Bank 'RBC Offers' for more details. The offer runs until June 30 and I received it on the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard.

American Express also has a new Amex Offers deal for those in the GTA region for shopping at Pink Martini Collection Queen Street. If you spend at least $100 you will earn a $15 credit. Unlike a lot of this offers which are one time only this one can be earned up to 5 times. See our Guide to American Express Canada 'Amex Offers' for more details

I have confirmation from MBNA that we will not be seeing any enhanced offers on the Alaska Airlines World Elite Mastercard like has been seen for Alaska Airlines credit cards in the U.S.. See this post of ours for background info on the limited time offers Alaska is providing.

Aeroplan officially adds Etihad Airways as an airline partner

You may recall that back in April of 2019 news came out that Etihad Airways would become a partner of Aeroplan as of May 1, 2019. Well that was news that was accidentally released as the partnership was not set to launch at that time. Well we can pass along the news that it is finally official as Etihad is now an airline partner of Aeroplan. This brings the total number of airlines that you can earn and redeem Aeroplan miles on to 35.

Here are some key points provided by Aeroplan on the new partnership with Etihad
* Etihad flights will be subject to the Fixed Mileage Flight Reward chart, available here
* Members will be able to book Etihad flights online at aeroplan.com, as well as via their Contact Centre.
* Etihad flights can be combined with flights operated by Air Canada and other international partners.
* Fuel surcharges will not apply on Etihad operated flights.

When you fly Etihad Airways on eligible paid tickets you will earn Aeroplan miles as follows:
It's great to see this partnership come to fruition as Etihad connects Toronto to hundreds of global destinations via Abu Dhabi and gives Aeroplan members that many more choices to redeem their miles on for award flights. Note point four above that fuel surcharges do not apply to Etihad flights! The partnership however does not provide recognition of elite status benefits nor do Etihad flights count towards Air Canada Altitude elite status.

Aeroplan also let us know that more partners are going to be added in the coming weeks in preparation of the launch of the new Aeroplan program.

Learn more about the Etihad Aeroplan partnership here.

June 2 Update: TAP Air Portugal ready to go with flight specials out of Toronto and British Airways Executive Club changes terms so you can't sue them

TAP Air Portugal is starting to promote the return of their flights out of Toronto for travel in July and beyond. It does appear for the most part that Portugal will begin opening up on July 1 to international travel (their beaches are set to open June 6!) but there will be some restrictions in place (see below for the current requirements of the Azores as an example but this could change). I would recommend reading this page on Visit Portugal to learn more about their opening plans and what it will entail as a Canadian travelling to Portugal. The airline will operate 1 flight per week between Toronto and Lisbon and 2 flights per week between Toronto and Ponta Delgada for the month of July. Flights start at C$309 one way or 29,000 Miles&Go Miles. Of course it is entirely possible that you will have to self-isolate upon return dependent on what transpires with Canadian regulations over the next few weeks and months. And of course due to current lack of travel there is Aeroplan availability on a lot of these flights in both economy and business class. You can learn more and book TAP Air Portugal flights here

Passengers flying to the Azores archipelago will be subject to one of the following options:
1. Submit proof of testing to COVID-19 up to 72 hours prior to flight departure;
2. Perform test on arrival and stay in prophylactic isolation until the result is obtained;
3. Perform voluntary quarantine for a period of 14 days in a hotel indicated for the purpose;
4. Return to the destination of origin or travel to any destination outside the Region, fulfilling, until the time of the flight, prophylactic isolation in a hotel indicated for this purpose.
More information at https://covid19.azores.gov.pt

You may have received an email from British Airways Executive Club outlining changes to the program. Specifically they have added in a term that will not allow you to take British Airways to court over issues arising from the loyalty program or to participate in a class action lawsuit against them. Rather they will use arbitration to resolve each issue individually. As this is a change in the loyalty program and not the flights I assume you can't sue them when your Avios expire, you can't challenge earning or redemption changes etc. However probably the biggest that will arise will be on award tickets and if things go awry with them. Gary at View from the Wing raises the question of the legality of this move and if he is right it is entirely possible BAEC will have to change their terms and conditions again. (Thanks to Rewards Canada reader Andrew S. for reminding me to write about this!)

Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for June - These cards provide some of the best value out of their welcome bonuses

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of June 2020! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards that have very good acquisition (welcome/sign up) offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the just sign up bonus, but when some of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when you grab them strictly for the sign up rewards. This month we see three first year free cards on the list!

A major shift in this monthly feature as TD pulled back on their welcome bonus offers for their travel related products. As well the Platinum Card from American Express also saw its welcome bonus reduced so it left the list in mid-May. That brings the Marriott Bonvoy American Express card back to the top of the list and sees the HSBC World Elite Mastercard, BMO World Elite Mastercard and CIBC Aerogold Visa Infinite Cards jump into the top 5.

Editor's Note:
As travel is curtailed right now these offers are more forward looking and can and should be used towards your long term travel plans - whether that's later this year, next year or even beyond. Getting the cards now allows you to achieve the sign up bonuses as you wish and then continue to spend to build up those points and miles balances to make those future vacations that much better. - Or in the case of all the cards except the Alaska Airlines Mastercard you can also look at cash back or cash back equivalents like gift cards from each program if you are looking at short term financial help. If you are going for the latter focus on the cards that have no fee in the first year so that you can maximize your value.

Remember as well that you will find this list smack dab in the middle of the Rewards Canada homepage for easy reference!

Here are our top 5 credit card sign up offers for June (in order of welcome bonus value, calculated as minimum mile/points value minus annual fee)

Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card - 50,000 Points (Apply here)
Minimum value: $380
No changes to this card means it stays put on the list The 50,000 points, awarded after spending $1,500 on the card in three months are worth at least $500 in our minds which means after subtracting the annual fee you are coming out ahead by $380. In reality you can pull even more value out of the card (into four figures) as we outlined in our post A look at how The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card provides huge value!  Don't forget you get an annual free night with the card as well on the card anniversary date!
Minimum Income: N/A

Alaska Airlines World Elite Mastercard - 30,000 Miles (Apply here)
Minimum value: $330
This card offers a welcome bonus of 30,000 miles when you spend $1,000 on the card in the first three months of having it. This is one of the easiest bonuses to achieve and this card is one of the most churnable in Canada. There are really no problems in getting it 2-4 times in one year alone! Those 30,000 miles are worth no less than $330 when redeeming for economy class flights and just go up from there like the TD Aeroplan card.
Minimum Income: $80,000 Personal or $150,000 Household

HSBC World Elite Mastercard - 60,000 points (Apply here)
Minimum value: $300
This card offers a welcome bonus of 60,000 points, split between 20,000 on first purchase and 40,000 more when you spend $6,000 within 180 days of getting the card. The annual fee of $149 is waived in the first year as well meaning these points come to you at no cost other than card spend. The card has a lot of other good benefits like no foreign transaction fees to consider as well! Those 60,000 points are worth $300 in travel rewards but those points can also be converted to British Airways Executive Club, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles or Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer.
Minimum Income: $80,000 personal or $150,000 household or $400,000 in assets at any Canadian Financial Institution

BMO World Elite Mastercard - 35,000 points (Apply here)
Minimum value: $250
This card offers a welcome bonus of 35,000 points which is awarded when you spend $3,000 in your first 3 months. The annual fee of $150 is waived in the first year as well meaning these points come to you at no cost other than card spend. The card also has one of if not the best travel insurance coverage of all cards in Canada.! Those 35,000 points are worth $250 when they are redeemed for travel via BMO Rewards.
Minimum Income: $80,000 personal or $150,000 household

CIBC Aerogold Visa Infinite Card - 20,000 Miles (Apply here)
Minimum value: $240
The bonus is awarded as follows: 15,000 Aeroplan Miles when you make your first Purchase with your Card + 5,000 Aeroplan Miles when you spend $3,000 or more in the first four billing periods. Plus your first year annual fee is waived! Depending on how you redeem those Aeroplan miles should be worth no less than $240 but more likely closer to $500 or more! In fact if you take the per mile value from our post from late July 2019 this welcome bonus would be worth $1,500 or more.
Minimum Income: $60,000 Personal or $100,000

If you went for all these cards you ultimately could end up with anywhere from $1,500 to over $2,500 in travel value. However even if you only take on one or two you are helping your travel budget significantly at no cost other than regular credit card spend. We don't really recommend getting all five in one month unless you know you can meet the minimum spend for them all at once, rather you'd want to pick one or two right now, perhaps another next month and so on.

[OFFER EXPIRED] New Welcome Offer for the CIBC Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card - 10% cash back on all purchases up to $2,000 and a first year annual fee rebate

This offer has expired

CIBC recently launched an excellent new offer for their premium cash back card the CIBC Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card. The card has a welcome offer of 10% cash back on all purchases up to $2,000 made during the first four monthly statement periods. The offer doesn’t end there however as new cardholders will also get their first year annual fee rebated which means you can try this card out at no cost to you other than your actual credit card spending.

The 10% cash back on all purchases of up to $2,000 will translate to up to $200 cash back which is a decent welcome bonus for a cash back card and matches many that are in market right now. Once you have hit that $2,000 in spending or have had the card for four statement periods your cash back earning will revert to the standard rates as follows:

· 4% cash back on eligible gas and grocery purchases
· 2% cash back on Tim Hortons® and TELUS® purchases
· 1% cash back on all other purchases

The accelerated earn rates of 4% and 2% are awarded on the first $20,000 spent in those categories or when you reach $80,000 in total purchases in your account, whichever comes first. Once that limit is reached you’ll earn 1% cash back on all purchases. All cash back earned on the CIBC Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card accumulates during the year and is paid out as a credit on your December statement. This is the only drawback on this card as we have recently seen many cash back cards move to an instant or monthly redemption model for cash back rather than the old school yearly credit. Granted, two of this card’s biggest competitors are no different and only pay out once per year as well so it isn’t alone. If you are OK with getting one big lump sum reward at the end of the year this offer and card is one you should consider.

The card also features a very good insurance and benefits packages that includes Out of Province Emergency Travel Medical Insurance, Trip Interruption Insurance, Flight Delay and Baggage Insurance, Purchase Security and Extended Protection Insurance, $500,000 Common Carrier Accident Insurance, and Auto Rental and loss Damage Insurance

It’s nice to see CIBC bump up the welcome offer for their Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card and Dividend Platinum® Visa* Card to compete with other cards in the market offering similar incentives. With much of the Canadian marketplace eyeing cash back or cash equivalent rewards instead of travel right now there is no better time to offer a sweet welcome bonus like this one and provide that nice incentive to switch to cash back.

Learn more about this offer and apply for the CIBC Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card here.

If your income is below the required amount for the CIBC Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card this exact same welcome bonus is also available on the CIBC Dividend Platinum® Visa* Card

The most current offer for this card is shown below:

100% bonus when you buy Radisson Rewards points until June 30 with annual limit increased to 120K points

I have been waiting for this one – not to buy myself but in terms of so many other airline and hotel chains having offered buy miles and points bonuses over the past few months I figured it was only time before Radisson did so as well. Now they have revealed an offer for this month and the offer is their usual one at 100% bonus points. Good news is they have also provided a boost to the limit of the number of points you can buy annually to 120,000 points from 80,000. This means you can buy 240,000 points for US$840:

At that amount you are paying US 0.35 cents per point which is the mid-point of what most people place their point value at for the program. There are definitely opportunities where you can exceed that 0.35 cents per point when you redeem at some of the higher end or more expensive hotels.

Offer details:
100% Bonus Radisson Rewards Points when you buy points. Buy points here. Until Jun 30, 20

And remember that you can earn 2,500 bonus Radisson Rewards points on stays in Canada and worldwide with their Dream Deals offer.
