September 5 Update: Air Canada Cafe set to open tomorrow at YYZ, Sandman Hotels extends bonus stamps offer and more!

Air Canada will be opening up their first Air Canada Cafe in the domestic gate area of Toronto Pearson International tomorrow. This is reminiscent of the Maple Leaf Lounge Express they opened up earlier this year in the U.S. departures section!

Air Canada is serving up its newest offering for premium customers with the opening of the Air Canada Café at Toronto Pearson International Airport. Conveniently located in the domestic gate area, the café will offer customers a wide selection of specialty beverages to Grab & Go or to be enjoyed with complimentary Wi-fi in a relaxed, bistro-type setting.
"We are thrilled to unveil this innovative product, one we are sure will create buzz not only for our customers, but the entire industry. Air Canada's premium clientele will have access to this new Café, revolutionizing the coffee shop experience at Toronto Pearson. It will offer a wide selection of beverages and food that can be taken to go," said Andrew Yiu, Vice President, Product at Air Canada.
Passengers will be able to visit the Barista Station for freshly squeezed orange juice, a wide selection of Lavazza Coffee, cold brew mocktails, specialty hot drinks or Lavazza Cold Brew. A self-serve station will offer Greenhouse Juice products such as kombuchas and a variety of organic, cold-press juices available in individual-size bottles, coffee, tea, flavoured waters, soft drinks and other non-alcoholic beverages.  Other items such as Lindt truffle chocolates, OKA fine cheese and Gouter premium pastries will also be offered.

Before 11 a.m., passengers will be able to enjoy a selection of breakfast foods such as yogurt, fresh fruits and pastries. After 11 a.m., the Café will offer an assortment of freshly prepared salads, sandwiches, cheeses and more. It will offer complimentary Wi-fi and access to digital newspapers and magazines in partnership with PressReader, which makes the content of more than 7,000 newspapers and magazines in 60 languages.

A highlight of the Café will be a large mural by Canadian artist Shawn Evans of the places he has lived and travelled. The painting draws upon his memories to evoke the deep and immense spaces found under the prairie sky, to the mountainous regions of the West, to the streetscapes of Toronto.
The Air Canada Café officially opens on Friday, Sept 6 and will complement the existing Maple Leaf Lounges at Toronto Pearson International Airport. It is located at gate D20 and will be open all day seven days a week. It offers comfortable seating for 109 customers, power and USB ports throughout the Café, washrooms and a customer service desk staffed by Premium Agents.
Are you planning on visiting this cafe anytime soon? Let us know! We'd love to have one of the Rewards Canada community review it for us (and just so you know - we pay for the reviews!) (Source Air Canada)

Debunking the myth of American Express Cards not being widely accepted

This post was sponsored by Amex Bank of Canada. The views and opinions expressed in this blog, however, are purely my own.

One comment I hear time and time again from our readers is that they don’t want an American Express card because the cards aren’t widely accepted. They come to us for advice on getting a new credit card and this is one of the statements that I usually find in their initial email to us. I then proceed to help educate them on the truth surrounding the cards and that they should really consider an American Express. Two of the main reasons why are that American Express cards are some of the most rewarding cards in Canada - if you are looking to rack up lots of points that have value and are flexible to use, you want to go with American Express and the second reason is increased acceptance.

Over the past few years American Express has been aggressive in adding new merchants to their portfolio. In 2017 alone, American Express are added over 70,000 retailers and this was topped in 2018 with over 96,000 new retailers in Canada starting to accept the cards. This is not even limited to brick and mortar stores - most online retailers or small business using third party payment processing to accept cards, accept American Express. I can speak from personal experience that when I am at my daughters' sporting events, the companies taking and selling the photos and videos, have all accepted American Express via their card reader attached to their iPad or iPhone thanks to those third party payment processors! Here are some stats provided by American Express breaking down some of the 96,000+ new retailers added in 2018:
  • Over 47,000 Service provider locations in Canada started accepting American Express® Cards in 2018.
  • Over 27,000 Shopping locations in the Canada started accepting American Express® Cards in 2018.
  • Over 16,500 Dining locations in Canada started accepting American Express® Cards in 2018.
and by major city
  • Over 20,000 places in the Toronto area started accepting American Express® Cards in 2018
  • Over 10,000 places in the Montreal area started accepting American Express® Cards in 2018.
  • Over 9,000 places in the Vancouver area started accepting American Express® Cards in 2018
  • Over 5,000 places in the Calgary area started accepting American Express® Cards in 2018.
To further educate cardmembers about card acceptance and encourage them to use their cards at non major retailers, American Express also has their Shop Small program, which is a map based feature on the American Express website that allows you to find small merchants who accept the cards. I find myself regularly looking at the map to see who accepts the cards. You'd be surprised at the type of merchants who do accept the cards - my daughters were out shopping (they are additional cardholders under my wife's accounts) and were able to even use an American Express card at a second hand vintage clothing store.

Continuing on personal experience of using the cards I would say close to 95% of all of the purchases that the Rewards Canada household has, are placed on our American Express cards. From dining to cell phone bills to travel, almost all of our spending is put on American Express cards. We have four different Amex cards in our family and here is a breakdown of how we utilize them for our purchases:
If you want to learn more about the various American Express cards that are available to Canadians I would suggest you start with our American Express summary page as this lists all the cards with all their features. If you don't currently have an American Express card but are thinking of getting one, I would recommend starting with any one of these three cards first and then adding more once you are up to speed with them:
  • American Express Cobalt™ Card In your first year as a new Cobalt Cardmember, you can earn 2,500 Membership Rewards® points for each monthly billing period in which you spend $500 in net purchases on your Card. This could add up to 30,000 points in a year.
  • American Express Gold Rewards Card
New American Express® Gold Rewards Cardmembers can earn a Welcome Bonus of 25,000 Membership Rewards® points just by making $1,500 in purchases in the first three months of Cardmembership.
  • SimplyCash Preferred Card from American Express
New SimplyCashTM Preferred Card from American Express Cardmembers can earn 5% cash back on all eligible purchases (up to $300 cash back) for the first 6 months of Cardmembership.

HSBC World Elite Mastercard - Up to 60,000 bonus points + first year annual fee waived (90,000 points + annual fee for Quebec)

HSBC's latest offer for their World Elite Mastercard is now out. This offer is very similar to the offer we saw on the card earlier this year in that a portion of the bonus is based on spending but instead of only 2x points you'll earn 3x points which means you can get to maximum welcome bonus faster.

A little background on this card - this is not their 'Premier World Elite' which is meant for people who bank at HSBC but rather this card is for any Canadian and it is essentially the same as the Premier version. When HSBC launched this card last year it became obvious they didn't want to only market their credit cards to those who bank with them, rather they wanted to get into the entire lucrative Canadian credit card market.  To learn more about this card outside of this bonus offer I would recommend reading our review of the card

From now until December 16th you can apply for the HSBC World Elite Mastercard and get up to 60,000 bonus HSBC Rewards Points along with having the first year $149 annual fee waived on the primary card.  The bonus is awarded as follows:
  • 20,000 Point Welcome Bonus on your first purchses
  • Earn 3X points on all purchases for the first 3 months up to a maximum earn of 40,000 Points
The 60,000 points once achieved are worth $300 in travel rewards but this card isn't just a travel points card, it is actually a Hybrid Card. This means points can also be converted to partners outside of HSBC Rewards. In this card's case, they can be transferred to British Airways Executive Club, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles or Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. The points convert as follows:
  • 2.5 points to 1 Avios
  • 3 points to 1.35 KrisFlyer Miles
  • 3 points to 1.2 Asia Miles
This means the sign up bonus is worth 24,000 Avios in British Airways' Executive Club which if you have followed us for sometime now know that is a good amount for a lot of various redemptions.

Here are some options to check out
The sign up bonus isn't the only good feature about this card however. It is one of only eight cards in Canada that has No Foreign Transaction fees, it also comes with a $100 annual travel enhancement credit (to use on bag fees, seat selection etc) and like most World Elite Mastercards in Canada it has airport lounge access membership via LoungeKey.

Related: No Foreign Transaction Fee Credit Cards for Canadians

Also note the first year free waiver option is not available for Quebec residents so instead they offer up to 90,000 bonus points for getting the card and simple holding on to it:

Now we have heard from a handful of our readers who have applied for this card in the past that the credit limits HSBC gives new customers tends to be on the low side which for some can make it difficult to be able to spend enough on the card to max out the spend portion.

Receive 50% Bonus Miles when you convert Radisson Rewards points to Aeroplan

Transfer bonuses from Radisson Rewards to Aeroplan now seem to happen with some regularity. This time it is a 50% bonus that runs until the end of the month. With the bonus you’ll get 300 Aeroplan Miles for every 2,000 Radisson Rewards points transferred. I would only recommend transferring at this time if you need to top off for an award that you will be redeeming for right away as history has shown that sometimes Radisson will give a bonus when Aeroplan runs their hotel transfer bonus (ie back in March 2019 the combination of the two bonuses equaled 60%)

Offer details:
50% Bonus Aeroplan Miles when you convert Radisson Rewards points to Aeroplan miles. Full details. Until Sep 30, 19

Can’t make use of this offer or want even more ideas on earning more miles? Check these out:

OFFER EXPIRED Best ever offer for TD First Class Visa Infinite Card - Up to 90,000 welcome points + first year free

TD's proprietary reward card and Aeroplan card portfolios were refreshed with new offers today. Many of the offers are the best that have ever been seen from TD and that includes this new offer for the TD First Class Visa Infinite Card. The welcome offer now has a maximum bonus of 90,000 points which is 10,000 more than the highest ever offer before! What makes this deal even better is that it still has first year free limited time benefit attached to it! These 90,000 points translate to $360 worth of travel credits for any travel booking or $450 worth of travel for bookings made via Expedia For TD.

Now before you jump on the offer you should be aware that the requirements to reach 90,000 points are a bit tougher than the 80,000 point offer earlier in the year. When you receive the card you will be awarded with 20,000 TD Rewards Points on the first purchase made. Then you will receive double points on eligible purchases in the first three months, up to 60,000 points, for a total of 80,000 points  This is all with the first year annual fee of $120 waived on the primary card. You can also earn an additional 10,000 points when you add an authorized user to your account (an additional card, formerly known as supplementary card). The latter however is still subject to the $50 annual fee. Of course if you have a TD All Inclusive Banking plan you don't ever pay fees on the primary or first additional card. Even if you don't get the additional card (you're single or don't want to pay the $50) the 80,000 points you can earn at no cost other than your credit card spend is no less than any other bonus we have seen on the card before.

Now, what you need to consider is how you go about getting the most miles possible because to earn 80,000 points you need to max out your spend on the card in the first three months to take advantage of the double TD Rewards points. If we take the 60,000 point maximum earn for double points it will take $3,333.34 to $10,000 in card spend to get all the points possible. That means you need to budget just over $1,100 to $3,334 in spending per month.  The range in spend is due to the earn rates on the card, the card earns 9 points per eligible dollar spent on ExpediaForTD online purchases which translates to 18 points per dollar during the double point earning period. That drops to 6 points for phone in purchases with ExpediaForTD (12 points during the 3 month period) and all other purchases earn 3 points per dollar which doubles to 6 per dollar during those first three months. If you have been planning some home renos, booking a vacation, buying a car, etc. this would be the time to do it and put that spend on this card to get you the most points.

If you are wondering if this offer is right for you, you do have some time to consider it as it is open for new applications until December 1st. Find out more and apply for the card here.

Save 25% on business class reward tickets between Toronto and Europe with Air France-KLM's September Promo Rewards

The newest set of Air France KLM’s Promo Rewards are now out!  This month we see fewer options for flying out of Canada when compared to August. With promo rewards the discount ranges from 20 to 50% off the regular amount of miles required to redeem for these flights. As you can see just by the discount this can be a very good offer if you get 50% off for Business Class! This month sees only one Canadian city in the mix. You can save 25% off business class reward tickets to Europe from Toronto on Air France or KLM.

Offer details
September Promo Rewards – Save 20% to 50% on the Award Miles usually required for an award ticket. Destinations vary by each promotional period. Full Details  Book by Sep 30 for travel Nov 1 – Dec 31, 19
This month's Canadian cities:
Toronto - 25% off business class on Air France or KLM

Here are the mileage requirements for flying from Toronto to Amsterdam or Paris (the mileage amount will vary for other cities in Europe). As you can see Toronto is a real good deal even at 25% off!

And an example of some of the business class availability from Toronto to Paris in November:

 And return flights:

Total miles and fees come to 90,000 miles and 486.90EUR:

And a few more options that fall below the 90,000 mileage mark (all in business class):

Remember one way flights are exactly half of the above mileage amounts.

If you don't have enough miles for a Promo Reward your best bet is to convert Marriott Bonvoy points to Flying Blue on a 3:1 basis. Remember you'll earn 5,000 bonus miles when you convert 60,000 points at a time (a total of 25,000 miles per 60,000 points) That means 120,000 points will get you to 50,000 miles which is enough to cover a one way flight between Canada and Europe in Business Class!

If you don't have any Marriott Rewards Points you can always look at getting the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card to top off your account. Currently the card comes with a 50,000 point sign up bonus when you spend $1,500 on the card and then you could also grab the Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card as it also has 50,000 point sign up bonus. You would then ultimately be able to have 100,000 points which can be converted 3 to 1 to Flying Blue Miles plus Marriott will kick in an additional 5,000 miles for every 60,000 points transferred.  Of course timing of getting the card(s) now, spending and getting the points will likely not happen for this month but it sets you up for future offers.  Need to grab two tickets for an itinerary? You could choose to get one Marriott card for yourself and one for your partner or spouse and you'll have a lot more points!

September 4 Update: Up to 5x Aeroplan Miles with the eStore Fall Fashion Event, 55,000 bonus PC Optimum points for online purchases & a WestJet seat sale!

Today only you can earn 55,000 Bonus PC Optimum points if you spend $175 or more online at Shoppers Drug Mart. Find out more here.

RBC Avion Cardholders: 20% Bonus Miles when you convert RBC Rewards Points to American AAdvantage

https://www.rbcrewards.com/#!/whats-new/20190903AAmiles

We see the first of RBC's fall transfer bonus offers emerge this month. This one is for transfers to American AAdvantage and while it's nice to have a 20% bonus it still doesn't make up for the change in the conversion ratio we saw a few years ago. The transfer ratio to American AAdvantage is 1 RBC Reward Point = 0.7 American AAdvantage Miles (used to 1:1 back in the day) and with this bonus it jumps to 0.84 AAdvantage Miles per RBC Reward point. If and only if AAdvantage is your main frequent flyer program and you can use these miles to top off for an award (or get a full award at good value) would you want to convert your points.  This offer is only available to Avion cardholders.

Convert Diners Club Club Rewards Points to British Airways Executive Club Avios and receive a 40% bonus

Last seen in November of last year, the Diners Club to British Airways conversion bonus is back and is once again a 40% bonus.

If you are thinking of redeeming soon for travel on British Airways or any of their oneworld partners this may be the time to transfer. This one is for those select few of us who have held onto to our Diners Club Mastercards as the card isn't technically available for new applications. The regular transfer rate is 1,250 Club Rewards Points to 1,000 Avios so with this bonus that equates to 1,400 Avios. That equates to 1.12 Avios per dollar spent on the card. Nothing special and it's not great like the 2+ Avios you can earn on eats and drinks (convert to Marriott to BA) with the American Express Cobalt Card or the category bonuses of 2 Avios per dollar with The American Express Gold Rewards Card and that doesn't take into account the transfer bonuses that Amex also runs from time to time. No matter what for Diners Club it is still better than the regular transfer rate so this is a good time to transfer! I may end up transferring some of my Club Rewards points to BA however it may work out better if I transfer to Alaska Airlines instead of BA, just have to do some research. (hopefully Diners runs an Alaska Airlines transfer bonus!)

Remember you can use British Airways Executive Club to fly to many destinations in the U.S. from Canada for between 15,000 and 25,000 Avios round trip (See here for details on that)
