WestJet 787 Dreamliner Photo Tour

On February 14th we had the pleasure of attending WestJet's 787 Show & Shine event at their Calgary home base. The media, select elite members and #avgeeks got to have a sneak peek at the plane that will start flying next week. The plane ushers in a new era at WestJet as they grow their presence not only as an international airline but also as a leisure right through to premium service airline. The plane has their first true business class with lie flat pods and they hope to differentiate from their main competitor by offering extras like turn down service.

WestJet took delivery of this first 787 (Fin 901 and named after the founder of WestJet, Clive Beddoe) a few weeks ago and after a quick overnight stop in Calgary it went out to Toronto for training and familiarization as YYZ has a hanger that can accommodate it. The 787 hanger in Calgary is not complete yet (it should be in April) hence for this show and shine we were told to wear our winter jackets as they would only have the nose of the plane peeking into their 737 hangers. The airline is slated to receive two more Dreamliners by April and seven more over the next couple of years. The first revenue flight is on February 20th from Toronto to Calgary (and return that day as well) The plane will fly daily between the two cities until April 28 when it will takeover the Calgary - London Gatwick route from the 767. The other two aircraft will start international flights on May 17th Calgary to Paris and June 1st Calgary to Dublin.

What follows is a photo tour from this is event highlighting the new era of aircraft for WestJet:

Great new offer for the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card - Up to 30,000 bonus miles & first year free

TD has just released one of the richest offers to date for their TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card! The new offer that is available here and only some other select digital channels (it will go live with TD in March) provides an awesome welcome bonus of up to 30,000 Aeroplan Miles and a first year annual fee rebate for the primary card.

The 30,000 Aeroplan Miles welcome bonus is split as 15,000 miles upon your first purchase and another 15,000 miles when you spend $1,000 on the card within the first 90 days of opening your account. For most people this shouldn't be too hard as that will equate to $333.33 in spending per month.

Here is just a small example what 30,000 Aeroplan Miles can get you:
  • 2 round trip economy class short haul flights in Canada & Continental USA
  • 1 round trip or 2 one way economy class long haul flights in Canada & Continental USA
  • 1 one way economy class ticket from Canada to Hawaii, Mexico, Caribbean, Central America, South America or Europe
  • 1 round trip business class short haul flight in Canada & Continental USA
  • 1 one way business class long haul flights in Canada & Continental USA, or to Mexico, Caribbean or Central America
If you meet the minimum income requirements for this card I would most definitely recommend getting it as it 30,000 Aeroplan Miles for no cost other than $1,000 in spending is an amazing deal. On average we value Aeroplan miles at a minimum of 1.8 cents each which would make the 30,000 miles worth no less than $540. This is now one of the richest card offers out there! You have until June 2 to jump on this card as that is posted end date for the offer.

Finally here are all the details of the current offer and the card itself:

The Platinum Card from American Express gets revamped - Metal Card, Earning Changes (up to 3x points) and no increase to annual fee

One the best high end, ultra premium cards in Canada got a makeover today. The Platinum Card from American Express has been a mainstay in many people's wallets thanks to its earning potential and travel benefits. It has been sometime since it last received a makeover and we are pleased to bring you the details of the newly updated Platinum Card. There are only two significant changes and everything else on the card remains the same - even the annual fee.

The first change is on the card's earn rates for spending. Up until yesterday the card earned 1.25 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent across the board. That now changes to the following:
  • 3 points for every $1 in Card purchases on eligible dining in Canada
  • 2 points for every $1 in Card purchases on eligible travel
  • 1 point for every $1 in all other Card purchases
As you can see two categories are getting increased earn while all other spending will now earn .25 points less. I'm not 100% sure how I feel about this change, the 3x points for dining is great and just like the Cobalt card, American Express has to legally word it 'in Canada' as that is all they can control but as long as a restaurant outside of Canada codes properly as dining you will earn the 3x points (this has been confirmed from Amex). I would recommend reading the following for this topic:
Next it will earn 2 Points per dollar on travel spending - this should be global like the Gold Rewards Card and again it is a welcome increase.

The remainder of the spending does unfortunately drop to 1 point per dollar. I do a lot of shopping on my Platinum card to earn the 1.25 points where other cards don't have category bonuses and I will now have to reevaluate that spending.

I was told by American Express that they did lots of research and their numbers do show most spending on the Platinum Card is for dining and travel so for most people this should be a boon. Even you don't have other cards and get 1 point per dollar, when you average out with your other spending you will most likely still be getting 1.25 points per dollar or more.

When you redeem Membership Rewards points for their great Use Point for Purchases Travel option this means you'll be getting a 3% return on Dining, 2% return on Travel and a 1% return on all other purchases.

Related: Membership Rewards Use Points for Purchases explained

The points can also be used for the Membership Rewards Fixed Points for Travel option that works like traditional frequent flyer programs with set point amount for tickets.

Related:  A closer look at the Membership Rewards Fixed Points Travel program

Now let's continue on the earn side - the 3 points per dollar is also like earning 3 Aeroplan Miles or 3 British Airways Avios per dollar since Membership Rewards points transfer to those programs 1:1! That's huge and remember Amex typically offers a bonus once per year for transferring to British Airways so that 3 per dollar could go as high as 3.75 or higher depending on the bonus! No other cards can get you that many Aeroplan Miles or Avios on dining spend. For the 2 points per dollar on travel, this is the same as the Gold Rewards Card which means you can earn 2 Aeroplan Miles or Avios on travel spending, once again the highest earn for all around travel for those programs in Canada.

The second change to the card is strictly aesthetic but I know a lot of people have wanted this. And that is the Metal Card. Prevalent in the U.S., metal cards evoke even more prestige and people want it. We've had many a reader ask us if Amex Canada was ever planning on bringing the metal card to our market and now they have done so.

The great news about today's changes is that nothing else is changing on the card. The annual fee of $699 remains the same. Additional cards remain $175. The hotel and car rental elite statuses remain. The $200 annual travel credit? Still there. The insurance benefits remain and so on.  The 50,000 points welcome bonus also goes unchanged.

Related: Get elite status with ten hotel reward programs, one airline and one cruise program with The Platinum Card from American Express

So for the most part, this is an enhancement to the Platinum Card and should make most of the current and future cardholders happy. I know we'll be keeping the Platinum Card in our family and keep using right beside our Gold Rewards Cards, Cobalt Cards and Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card. Yes we have a lot of Amex cards in our wallets and some spending on them will be adjusted - depending on the reward travel we are looking for, dining may now be split between the Cobalt Card and Platinum card whereas prior to today it was all on the Cobalt Card. Really it all depends if we need a push for Aeroplan Miles or Avios or a boost to the Membership Rewards Select balance on the Cobalt card for some travel anywhere redemptions or to boost our Marriott Bonvoy balance.

What about you? What do you think of the changes? Will this be enough for you to get the card now if you were unsure of it before? Will you keep it if you already have it and use it more now? Let us know!

Here are all the details of the card:

New Hyatt Hotel Openings in Canada for 2019 - 3 hotels confirmed

Continuing on with our new hotel openings in Canada series we now take a look at what Hyatt has planned for 2019.

Out of the major hotel chains, Hyatt Hotels are one of the smallest with less then 1,000 hotels globally and there presence in Canada reflects that with only nine hotels operating here.  This number is changing relatively fast, I recall only a couple of years ago when they only had four hotels across our country.

The Hyatt family of hotels include the following brands of which you'll currently find Park Hyatt, Hyatt Regency, Andaz and Hyatt Place in Canada

For 2019 we have three more confirmed Hyatt openings including the first Hyatt House in Canada:
There are also another 5 hotels in the works that are listed in Hyatt's communications for 2019 openings but in our discussions with Hyatt these hotels may not actually be opening this year:
  • Hyatt Place Brampton (123 guestrooms) in Brampton, Ontario
  • Hyatt Place Kelowna (161 guestrooms) in Kelowna, British Columbia
  • Hyatt Place Moncton (120 guestrooms) in Moncton, New Brunswick
  • Hyatt Place Winnipeg Downtown (144 guestrooms) in Winnipeg, Manitoba
  • Hyatt House Hamilton/McMaster University (135 guestrooms) in Hamilton, Ontario
Along with that there are four more hotels in the works for 2020:
  • Hyatt Place Toronto International Airport (196 guestrooms) in Toronto, Ontario
  • Hyatt Place Toronto Airport Corporate Centre and Hyatt House Toronto Airport Corporate Centre (250 guestrooms) in Toronto, Ontario
  • Hyatt Place Vancouver Airport (97 guestrooms) in Vancouver, British Columbia
With all these slated hotel opening over the next year or two Hyatt will effectively be more than doubling there presence here in Canada from the current 9 hotels (well 10 if included the Park Hyatt Toronto which is currently closed for renovations) to 21 hotels.

It is nice to see Hyatt expanding there presence here in Canada by adding these hotels. There presence will still be on the lower end when compared to other major chains but nonetheless we are excited to see them grow. It will give all us Canadian World Of Hyatt members more places to earn points that aren't off in far flung destinations!

Remember to take advantage of all the possible World Of Hyatt bonus points offers if you plan on staying at any of these new Hyatt hotels or any other Hyatt hotels for that matter! You can find all the promotions listed on our World Of Hyatt Bonus Points page.

Are you excited about any of the new Hyatt hotels opening up this year? Are there any locations or brands you'd like to see in your neck of the woods? Let us know in the comments below.

World Of Hyatt Hotel Category Changes for 2019 - 259 hotels affected globally, 1 in Canada

The list of hotel chains releasing their hotel category changes for 2019 continues to grow. Hyatt and their World Of Hyatt program are now in the fray. They follow Marriott, IHG, and Radisson who have already announced their changes for this year.  Between the four hotel chains there are now a total 42 hotels in Canada changing award night categories.

Hyatt's changes will take place on March 18 and affect a total of 259 hotels around the globe. The split in locations is pretty even with 130 hotels moving up in category and 129 going down. Only one of the nine hotels they have in Canada is changing and that is Spirit Ridge in Osoyoos B.C. Good news for this change is the hotel is one of those going down!

World Of Hyatt isn't as major of a player in our market like the other big chain loyalty programs since they don't have a lot of hotels here and have no credit card option (unless you still hold the Diners Club Mastercard!) but I do know a fair bit of our readers do utilize the program thanks to Hyatt's foot print in major cities worldwide. So if you are a World of Hyatt member take a look at the complete list of hotels changing categories if you have had some redemptions in mind and take our usual advice of booking before March 18 for any hotel that is going up and the good news with Hyatt is that you don't have to wait to book hotels going down as Hyatt will automatically refund you the difference in points after March 18.

Of note some of the more aspirational properties that are moving up that you may want to lock in now are:
  • Andaz Maui - Category 6 to 7
  • Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa - Category 5 to 6
  • Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi - Category 5 to 6
  • Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa - Category 6 to 7
We'd love to hear from those of you who are World Of Hyatt members here in Canada and are using the program regularly - what do you think of the changes?
