December 15 Update: WestJet & American part ways, Up to 3,000 Bonus Points on your next IHG stay, changes to Aeroplan earning on First Air

WestJet Rewards will be losing their first ever airline partner next year. American Airlines and WestJet will part ways at the end of July 2018. The partnership has been around since June of 2012 but with the announcement last week that WestJet and Delta are looking at forming a Joint Venture it is no wonder the partnership with AA will come to an end.

Check out this IHG Rewards Club bonus - it is meant for Miles & More members but you can choose to earn IHG Rewards Club points instead. If you aren't a member you'll earn 3,000 bonus IHG Rewards Club Points (or 1,000 Mile & More miles if you choose) on your next stay. If you are already a member you just need to register for the offer and you can score 1,500 bonus IHG Rewards Club points (or 500 Miles & More miles) Find out more here

CORRECTION - Thanks to Nunavut Wolf for pointing out that earning is going up not down!

Aeroplan earn rates for flying on First Air changed at the beginning of December just like they did for Canadian North. Once again the amount of miles earned is going down in most fare classes. Is Aeroplan prepping their non Star Alliance airlines that will likely remain partners with them post 2020 to help their revenues?
Changing course here since we totally read it wrong, so apologies to our readers and to Aeroplan. Kudos for increasing the earn rates on First Air instead of lowering them as was seen with Canadian North!  (Source Aeroplan)
- Continue to earn 100% of the miles in booking class Y.
- Earn 100% of the miles in booking class C, M . For travel until November 30, 2017, earn 75%.
- Continue to earn 75% of the miles in booking class B.
- Earn 75% in booking class H. For travel until November 30, 2017 earn 50%.
- Earn 75% in booking class N. For travel until November 30, 2017 earn 25%.
- Earn 50% of the miles in booking class G. For travel until November 30, 2017 earn 25%.
- Continue to earn 25% of the miles you fly in booking class Q.
- Earn 25% in new booking class A.

We don't mention new routes that start outside of Canada very often unless they will have some bearing for us in terms of rewards and one route announced this week that should be of interest to a lot of Star Alliance collectors is United Airlines' new San Francisco to Tahiti route. This route will launch in October of 2018 and be winter seasonal to start but it now allows for the possibilty of using Aeroplan, MileagePlus and other Star Alliance miles to get to Tahiti! The route is only 3x weekly so there will be lots of competition for those award seats but if you do snag them, especially in business class, you'll enjoy the comfort on United's 787-8 aircraft!

Just a reminder to check out our American Express Cobalt Card Confirmed Multiplier Locations as the list is growing on a near daily basis. Click here to find which locations you'll earn 5 to 10x points at!

We're going to keep this reminder going in each update until Christmas:
Check out the Give A Mile Flight Hero campaign! The charity can really use donations of miles to help provide flights to those who otherwise would be unable to travel to visit terminally ill or critically sick family and friends. Rewards Canada has pledged to raise 100,000 miles and we are half way there! We are putting the call out to all of our fans, readers and even new visitors, if you can give please do so. It can be as little as 1,000 miles! You can find out more and donate here.

Hotel Review: Manitou Springs Resort, Watrous, SK

We welcome another hotel review from Rewards Canada contributor Bill Wheatley:

I had the occasion to spend a couple of days at the Manitou Springs Resort & Mineral Spa.
This is an older hotel, but is kept in good condition. In fact, it was under renovation during my stay. The renovation work in no way interfered with my stay as it was being carried out during the day. Even though the lobby floor was part of the renovations, there was no disruption to either the check-in or check-out process.

The room was quite comfortable, with the usual amenities (coffee machine, fridge, hair dryer, ironing board, and the usual toiletries. There was also a bottle of red and a bottle of white wine available in the room (though these were not complimentary), but the convenience factor was nice if you cared to indulge. There was also a safe available for use, but as it was not bolted down to anything (just sitting on the table), I don’t think it was of much use. Granted, it would be difficult for anyone to get at the contents once locked, but it could be easily carried out of the room to open at leisure offsite.

The bed was very comfortable, sleep was not an issue. Water pressure and temperature in the shower was fine, no issues with either.  The hotel was very quiet, though this is the off season, so the occupancy rate was not high. The only downside to the stay was the wireless Internet; it was very poor which was a surprise as there were very few guests in the hotel (I was 1 of only 5). However, this was mentioned to the Front Desk and I am certain they will look into improving it.

They had an on-site Waters Edge restaurant & lounge which I utilized both nights. It has been a long time since I have seen a salad bar, but it was nice to be able to choose your own salad fixings. The food was very good; I had the ribs (choice of 4 flavors) one night and the lasagna the other. Portion size was very good, no question about value for your money. Service was great, attentive staff.  The lounge had 3 VLT’s if you felt like taking a chance with Lady Luck…..
The hotel itself is located right across the street from Lake Manitou, known as the Dead Sea of Canada due to its high salt content. It was, of course, partially frozen at this time of year.

The big claim to fame for this Hotel is the spa and mineral waters that they are able to utilize from the lake.  There is a very large pool area, but as it was part of the renovations, I am unable to offer an opinion on it.

Overall, I would recommend staying at this Hotel when you are in the Watrous Area. With all the health benefits available from the mineral waters, it is a good place to rest (and relieve) your aches and pains.

A closer look at the Membership Rewards Fixed Points Travel program

This post is the third and final part of a closer look at American Express' Membership Rewards program. Since 2014 Rewards Canada has rated it as the number one loyalty currency for Canadians, and while the program has evolved over time, innovative new features keep the program at the top of our list. One of the most recent additions is the Fixed Points Travel Program. The Fixed Points Travel Program is a take on traditional reward flights from frequent flyer programs. That is, you use a set amount of points to travel within, or to, certain regions without typically worrying about the price.

Booking flights using fixed points can come handy, especially during peak seasons when market fares are quite high. Amex’s Fixed Points Travel Program doesn’t limit specific airlines you need to book with. You can literally fly any airline, any time to any destination!

This provides a lot more flexibility than your traditional reward program, where typically the biggest complaint is a lack of flight availability!

Here are the points grids from Amex’s Fixed Point Travel Program:

The portfolio of Membership Rewards’ earning cards provides various earning options, from 1 point per dollar spent to up to 5 points per dollar, which means you can fly for as little as $3,000 in spending depending on what card you have. You won’t get that with any other card in Canada!

Even business class to Europe is an amazing deal, only $28,000 in spending at 5x points (the American Express Cobalt card is your 5x card!) gets you that round trip flight to Europe. It would cost almost double for most other cards in Canada!

Let's now look at how you can pull some real value out of the Fixed Points Travel Program.

We searched a flight from Toronto to Los Angeles from March 15 to 18, 2018. For those dates, you can fly direct on Air Canada (ticketed by United) for $699.97. This price was confirmed on the American Express Travel website and on United's site as well.

When you search on American Express Travel and select the flights you’d like, you'll have the option to choose between the Fixed Points Travel program or the Flexible Points Travel Program. When you select either option, it will adjust the screen to tell you how many points you need.

The Fixed Points Travel option only covers the base fare, so you still have to pay for the taxes, fees and charges. You do have the option to pay with cash, or you can use points to cover some or all of the taxes using the handy slider:

If you wanted to pay for this flight using only points you can see that the Fixed Points Program is your better option, as it would run you 54,799 points versus 69,997 with the Flexible Points option.

What happens if your flight exceeds the maximum amount allowed in the Fixed Points Program? You simply pay the difference with cash or points. Here is Toronto to San Francisco from January 4 to 7, 2018:

The maximum ticket price allowed for a long haul North America flight is $700 which is covered by the 40,000 points. The remaining $259.97 plus taxes and fees of $168.39 can be paid with cash or using the slider once again to use points against those additional amounts.

Overall, the Fixed Points Travel Program is a great option for travel bookings when you have flights that approach that maximum ticket amount allotted to each category. If there is a seat sale, you may be better off with the Flexible Points option. That's where even the American Express Travel booking engine comes out ahead. You don't have to do multiple searches to decide whether Fixed or Flexible would be the better option. Just toggle between the 2 buttons once you search your itinerary and see which one gives you better value! Simple as that!

Finally, you should note as well that these are actual revenue tickets for flights on these airlines. They are not your typical award tickets seen from your traditional frequent flyer programs. What does that mean? It means, in most cases, you'll earn frequent flyer miles for these flights with the respective program of your choice. For the examples above, you could credit these flights and still earn miles from Aeroplan, United MileagePlus, or virtually any other Star Alliance program.

By having this very versatile option, American Express is giving their Cardmembers every possible route to getting the most out of their points. Whether it's the Fixed Points option, Flexible Points option, or even transferring points to a partner program, all of which could be used for the flight examples above, you get to make the choice that represents the best value for you. Most other proprietary credit card programs or even traditional frequent flyer programs do not give this many options for booking travel.

December 12 Update: Delta SkyMiles lowers earning rates on partner airlines, World of Hyatt category changes, Air France Seat Sale

Delta SkyMiles is lowering the amount of SkyMiles earned on many of their partner airlines in select fare classes. For example, here is a comparison of what you earn flying on WestJet now and after the changes take effect on January 1. The good news is that WestJet flights will now count towards Medallion qualifying status. You can find all the changes listed here.

Last week we let you know that the partnership between Alaska Airlines and Air France KLM will be ending in 2018. Mileage Plan members can earn miles until the end of April 2018 but what is interesting is Flying Blue members will lose earning privileges on April 1st. (Source Flying Blue)

Hyatt Hotels announced their annual category changes for hotels in their World of Hyatt of program. Only 9 hotels are changing this year - 8 are going up in category while 1 is going down. None of their hotels in Canada are affected by these changes. These changes take affect at 12:01am Central time on December 13 (tonight really!) (Source One Mile at a Time)

We're going to keep this reminder going in each update until Christmas:

It's Official - Fairmont President's Club will end on July 2, 2018, to be integrated into Le Club AccorHotels

Last week we were discussing the fact that Visa Infinite Privilege cards were losing the Fairmont Elite Status benefit tied into the cards and one of our readers mentioned the same thing is happening for the Platinum Card from American Express. We speculated the reasoning behind it was due to the fact that Fairmont President's Club may soon be absorbed into its parent company's program Le Club AccorHotels.

We now have confirmation that this will happen from the email sent to us today from Fairmont:

Fairmont President’s Club has enjoyed the pleasure of welcoming members to our family of hotels for nearly 20 years. Today we are delighted to share the news that as of July 2018, Le Club AccorHotels will welcome us into its world, an award-winning program with a remarkable collection of luxury brands, including Raffles, Sofitel, Swissôtel, MGallery, and Pullman.

On July 2, 2018, your membership in Fairmont President’s Club will merge with your existing Le Club AccorHotels membership, making your member experience even more rewarding than it is today. With the simplicity of one loyalty card, you will soon have more earning power, more benefits and more rewards.

Rest assured that while your loyalty program is changing, the personal recognition and familiar perks you have come to appreciate while staying at Fairmont Hotels & Resorts will not change. We are committed to exceeding your expectations on each and every stay.

It is important to know that between now and July 2, 2018, your Fairmont President’s Club program will not change. Your annual membership status will renew as usual on March 1, 2018, based on your 2017 activity and stay history. Your status in Le Club AccorHotels will be updated to reflect the integration of your Fairmont President’s Club status (as of March 1, 2018) and boosted by your qualifying nights and stays with both programs in 2018.

This means that as of July 2, 2018 Fairmont President's Club will come to an end. It will be the first of two hotel programs that will disappear over the next few years - SPG will be next when it is combined with Marriott Rewards in 2019.

Here is the timeline of the integration of the programs:

The biggest question that most Fairmont President's Club members will have will be around elite status. Many of us have thanks to the accelerated offers from our Platinum Card from Amex or Visa Infinite Privilege cards. Your status will be matched in Le Club AccorHotels as follows:

Also if you have status with Le Club AccorHotel's they'll look at the combination of status between the two programs to offer status as follows:
The big winner in that list seems to be FPC Premier + Le Club Gold as they get boosted to Platinum status!

One of the beloved benefits of having status with Fairmont President's Club was all the free room and upgrade certificates you'd get each year that you qualified for status. Those will be awarded for one more year, 2018, after which they appear to disappear based on the charts of benefits:

When reading the FAQ's of the integration this is confirmed:
Basically they are saying you'll get an upgrade if you have Le Club AccorHotels Gold or Platinum status if there is availability - but only to the next best room, not suites like FPC offered.

Stays at Fairmont Hotels after July 2nd will earn Le Club AccorHotels points at the currently published earn rate:

Classic members earn 25 points per €10
Silver members earn 31 points per €10
Gold members earn 37 points per €10
Platinum members earn 44 points per €10

If you are familiar with the FPC program you'll know it wasn't points based however they would award airline miles from several airline programs for your stays - typically 500 miles per stay.  Le Club AccorHotels is partnered with many more airlines than FPC and do have Aeroplan as one of those partners. This will mean that you will more than likely be able to earn more miles in the new program at Fairmont Hotels, especially for stays with more than one night. Most conversions to airlines run at 4,000 Le Club AccorHotels Points to 2,000 airline miles. This means spending 160EUR at Fairmont hotels which, depending on the location, could be achieved with a one night stay so the airline mileage earning definitely gets boosted with the integration.

Overall the integration seems pretty straight forward with status matching and stand alone benefits outside of what was awarded each year by FPC. Those will be greatly missed by all elite FPC members, especially the suite upgrades however there is the distinct possibility that elite members may come out ahead with more upgrades since you won't be limited to the several certificates that Fairmont provided.

Learn more about the integration here.

You can now redeem WestJet Rewards dollars for flights on Qantas

It was told to us in a press release early this year that you could expect a Qantas redemption option with WestJet Rewards by the end of 2017. Well it's here now! As of today you are now be able to redeem WestJet Rewards dollars for flights on Qantas! This marks the fourth major airline that WestJet has added to their roster for redemption. First we had Delta, then Air France and KLM and now Qantas. You are able to redeem for flights on Qantas to Australia, New Zealand and beyond.

Qantas does only serve one city in Canada, Vancouver, but when you go to redeem for flights on Qantas many routes will take you on WestJet to one of Qantas' U.S. gateways for the flights across the Pacific. The primary connecting points are Dallas (DFW), Honolulu (HNL), Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO) and Vancouver (YVR) to Sydney (SYD), Brisbane (BNE) and Melbourne (MEL). Be aware that there is a limit of three segments per itinerary; therefore, you may notice in your searches that availability for itineraries past SYD, BNE or MEL will only be available for those origin cities that have a direct WS flight to one of QF's North American connection cities. For example, Calgary to Cairns with connections in LAX and SYD (ie.  YYC-LAX-SYD-CNS).

Unlike your standard redemption on Econo, Flex or Plus fares, where WestJet dollars act like cash towards the base fare;  WestJet dollar redemption for travel on Qantas are a flat rate known as Member Exclusive fares, which require you to redeem the full amount (100%) in WestJet dollars. And, similar to Delta, Air France and KLM you will only be able to redeem WestJet dollars for economy class at this time.

Here are the WestJet dollar requirements for flights on Qantas to areas they fly to:

  • Canada to Australia & New Zealand: from 629 WestJet dollars each way (1258 round trip)

All the above do not include taxes or fees
Above rates are subject to change when this new redemption feature is fully rolled out
The above rates are valid from any Canadian city that WestJet serves which can make this very valuable in those cities where fares tend to be high like Whitehorse or Deer Lake!

Here is are some examples of Qantas redemption options we found on WestJet's site:

And just a small list of the cities now available that you book with Qantas

Availability looks pretty good!

Once again great news for WestJet Rewards members! What a year of growth it has been for this program as now you have even more options to use your WestJet dollars with. As we said before all that remains is redemption for Business or First Class (which we hope will come when WestJet adds their own Business Class), more non-airline partners likes hotels and car rental companies and this program will be a full fledged frequent flyer program!

Summary of global hotel systemwide bonus points promotions - December Edition

One of the easiest ways to rack up lots of hotel points is to take advantage of the systemwide bonuses that come from many of the big chain programs and also from the lesser known programs. In fact, right now it should be rare for you NOT to earn a bonus. Unless you are staying at a boutique hotel or perhaps an Accor or Fairmont Hotel most other hotels out there have a bonus. So take advantage of it! These systemwide bonuses simply require you to register beforehand and they do not affect hotel pricing as long as you book a point eligible rate which are most rates out there. Of course booking through a third party site like Expedia or Rocketmiles does not count as most chains only award points on bookings that are made directly with them.  Without further ado here are all the current promotions that are available to everyone:
