Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for May

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of May! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards that have very good acquisition offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the sign up bonus, but when most or all of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when not taking into account insurance packages and other non-reward benefits. In fact all of the cards on this list for May are first year free so you can try them out at no cost and decide later on if the card is right for you. All the while earning the sign up bonus which can be used to subsidize your travels!

We see one card change from the April list as we replaced the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card with the CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Card since it is first year free. Also the Scotia Gold American Express card is even better now with a 30,000 point sign up bonus worth $300

So here are our top 5 credit card sign up offers for May (in alphabetical order)

American Express Gold Rewards Card - 25,000 Points (Apply here)
A mainstay offer here on Rewards Canada and a card that really should be in everyone's wallets. The American Express Gold Rewards card has its first year fee of $150 waived and will award you 25,000 Membership Rewards points when you complete $1,500 in spending in the first three months. That 25,000 points is worth a $250 travel credit via Amex's Use Points for Purchases feature or can be converted to 25,000 Aeroplan Miles (1 Round trip Economy Award ticket within North America) or 25,000 British Airways Executive Club Avios (as much a 3 one way Economy Award tickets in North America, see this article for details.) Also see our post on how this sign up bonus can get you a free flight between Toronto and Dublin!!

Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Visa - 30,000 Points  (Apply here)
The best no foreign transaction fee card in Canada makes it to this list due to a very strong acquisition offer. I mean who can complain with 30,000 to 50,000 points awarded on approval all at no cost as the card has the annual fee waived in the first year! They also give you a 15 night credit into the mix which automatically provides you with Marriott Rewards Silver Elite status. Please note there is a 50,000 point offer floating around that is specific for Marriott Elite members and some people are reporting that they getting the points while some others are not. YMMV but no matter what you should get at least 30K.

CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite (Apply Here)
This card has never made the list before but now that it has a first year free offer it breaks into the ranks of some of the better sign up offers.  The card offers a 15,000 Aventura Points sign up bonus worth anywhere from $150 to $300 depending on what type of flight you redeem for and since the annual fee of $120 (and supplementary cards are waived as well) those 15,000 points come at no cost to you.

mbna Best Western Rewards MasterCard (Apply here)
Right now there is an offer for 40,000 Bonus Western Rewards points with this card! With no annual fee to boot! We detail the offer in this post that shows just how much value you can pull out of the card with this 40K bonus!

Scotiabank Gold American Express Card - 30,000 Points  (Apply here)
A very strong card in the earn category for Gas, Grocery and Dining/Entertainment purchases, the current sign up bonus for the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card is 30,000 points when you reach $750 in spending in the first three months. That 30,000 points is equal to a $300 travel credit and since this card is a book anywhere card you can book the travel how you want when you want and when the charge shows up on your account you can redeem the points against the charge. The card normally has a $99 annual fee but of course that is waived in the first year if you apply by July 31, 2017!

If you went for all these cards you ultimately could end up with over $1,000 in travel credits and hotel free nights but even if you only take on one or two you are helping your travel budget significantly at no cost other than regular credit card spend

Give A Mile Mother's/Father's Day Campaign - Donate miles to help moms & dads connect with loved ones

As you know Rewards Canada has partnered with Give A Mile, the miles and points crowd funding charity helping families fly to see loved ones who are ill. We detailed Give A Mile back in April here on the blog and are happy to give them more coverage for their latest campaign.

Right now Give A Mile us looking to raise miles and make flights happen for mothers and fathers to connect with their loved ones with their Mothers/Father’s day campaign.  This campaign runs May and June and we encourage you to help out! All you have to donate is 1,000 miles, points or even cash to make things happen. Visit Give A Mile today for more details!

Give A Mile provided us with this recent flight of compassion they provided that fits the bill perfectly for the Mother's Day campaign:

When Tracy wrote from Calgary to describe her mother-in-law Charlene, she talked about how important Grandma had been to their three boys, her boundless generosity towards others, and how much of an example of strength she had been for Tracy personally. Charlene had been battling cancer for 3 years when Tracy found a lump in her own breast, and her mother-in-law encouraged her through two surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Now Grandma Charlene’s own cancer had moved from her lungs to her chest and liver, had metastasised and was in her brain. In November 2016 the doctors in Ottawa suggested Charlene had a maximum 3 months to live. Tracy’s husband had lost his job in the Alberta oil field and was working in Calgary, the only bread-winner in the family so was not able to go. One of their three sons had moved back home to help out but was not yet working so Tracy reached out to Give A Mile for help to fly that grandson, Dillon, and herself to see Charlene for the last time.

Dillon and grandparents – Ottawa, ON (Dec ’16)
A Give A Mile flight of compassion was awarded which allowed Tracy and Dillon to spend several days in Ottawa visiting grandparents in December 2016. Once home in Calgary Tracy wrote expressing gratitude for the trip that she and Dillon were able to take saying that they tried not to dwell on the fact that this would be the last time they would see Charlene, and instead spent many happy hours sharing stories and looking at family photos. Each day they would leave the visit with a warm feeling and smiling. Dillon got to spend valuable time with his mother and grandparents, and say goodbye to his grandma.
We are praying that the cancer gives her [grandmother Charlene] more time but we are glad that we
got to say our good byes in case we don't make it back.

Thank you so much to your organization for this truly remarkable gift!
Founded in late 2012 by crowd-funding flights of compassion with unused travel miles, a 100% volunteer organization, Give A Mile celebrated a big “300 flights (and counting..)” milestone in early 2017. They have expanded the donation options and continue to build corporate partnerships and a volunteer base. Please donate or get involved with Give A Mile and allow important moments with mothers, grandmothers and other family members to occur when needed most.

RBC devalues Avion transfer rate to American AAdvantage by 30%

Rewards Canada reader Jeffrey alerted us to this change that came about today and it isn't good news! Holders of a RBC Avion Visa card will no longer get 1 American AAdvantage Miles for every 1 RBC Reward point transferred. The new transfer rate as of today is 7 AAdvantage Miles for every 10 RBC Rewards points. That's a 30% reduction which is huge! Here is how Jeffrey feels about it:

I was/am pretty unhappy about this, because it's
1) a major devaluation;
2) I wasn't given any heads up, although I'm on RBC Rewards' mailing list, because of which I receive the newsletter regularly. Yet that didn't mention anything about this;
3) on top of this, since my statement closes later in May, it will be too late to charge my credit card with the necessary spending in order meet the minimum 5,000 pts required to convert. (I already converted many points into BA miles).
I contacted RBC about my dissatisfaction, but they did not come up with any solution.
As I only use that card to convert the points into BA and AA miles, I told them I will stop using the card.

The new RBC Rewards website does a terrible job of detailing RBC Rewards Points transfers to other programs unless I guess you are a customer and log in. Seeing that I am not a customer I can't find any mention of the new redemption rate. The only details I can find are the actual RBC Rewards program terms and conditions which still state the old redemption rate:
Screen shot take May 2nd at 11:04am MST

So you may have a little recourse until those T&C's are updated to try and snag 1 Mile per point from RBC. Otherwise this AAdvantage mile earning option for Canadians just got worse. Your best bet for earning AAdvantage miles now in Canada is the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express.

Question to all of you Avion cardholders who hold this card primarily for AAdvantage miles. What are you planning to do now that the redemption rate has been lowered?

WestJet to purchase Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners

This press release came out early this morning across our desk (4am so I wasn't at my desk) but super exciting news from WestJet:
CALGARY, May 2, 2017 /CNW/ - WestJet announced today a definitive purchase agreement with The Boeing Company for up to 20 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. This agreement includes commitments for 10 Boeing 787-9 aircraft to be delivered between the first quarter of 2019 and December 2021, with options for an additional 10 aircraft to be delivered between 2020 and 2024. The airline also announced it has selected General Electric's GEnx-1B engine for the 787.

"This order represents an exciting new chapter in WestJet's history," said Gregg Saretsky, WestJet President and CEO. "We have carefully executed on our strategic plan, first launching WestJet Encore to connect smaller communities across Canada to our growing network followed by our successful venture into wide-body flying to Hawaii and London Gatwick. Now, with the most sophisticated commercial airliner available, we turn our attention to further growing our international presence and introducing even more travellers to our award-winning guest experience."

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is a state-of-the-art aircraft that is 20 per cent more fuel efficient than the Boeing 767 aircraft. With a range of more than 14,000 kilometres, the Dreamliner will give WestJet the ability to serve new destinations in Asia and South America, and to expand its service offerings into the European market.
This is big news for them, obviously despite some teething issues with their quarter century old 767s the long haul market seems to be working for WestJet. Next up according to the press release will be more European, South American and Asian routes. It looks like WestJet's route map will grow into resembling one of the airlines they helped knock off, Canadain Airlines!

Seeing that the planes will start to be delivered in under 2 years I wonder if this means WestJet will stick with their current 4 767's for the time being or if they are still planning on bringing on some of the old birds and then replace them with the 787.

Also we don't know what configuration WestJet will put in the planes? Will we see a true business class or will they stick with their economy/premium economy mix. If we look at Norwegian who flies the 787-9 out of Europe to the U.S. and other long haul destinations they only do premium economy and economy (35 and 309 seats respectively) so it is entirely possible WestJet will stick with what they know and do something similar to Norwegian.

What are your thoughts on WestJet's move to acquire the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner?

Lots of WestJet news for start of the month here on Rewards Canada! Check out the two great offers we posted yesterday:

WestJet Rewards: Earn up to 1,000 bonus dollars for flying across Canada!

Tomorrow WestJet will launch an amazing flight bonus offer for travel within Canada. We are particularly excited about it as it was nice to work with WestJet Rewards to develop the promotion! Rewards Canada (well our parent company, FFB Group Inc.) developed this bonus offer concept and pitched it to WestJet Rewards as a great promotion to use to celebrate Canada's 150th Birthday. WestJet worked the concept to fit perfectly with their needs and budget. Heck they even made it more rewarding than we originally proposed as WestJet will reward you with that flight back to your home province on your first round trip! I can say we did not have that in our proposal so be thankful WestJet wants to reward you with even more WestJet dollars!

On to the actual promotion!

To celebrate Canada's 150th Birthday, WestJet Rewards will reward you with lots of bonus dollars when you fly across Canada to different provinces. The more provinces you fly to the more dollars you earn. Make it to 10 provinces or territories and you'll earn a total of 1,000 WestJet dollars. That's right one thousand dollars. Since WestJet Rewards works like cash that's a hefty amount of dollars to use towards future flights. So all of you traveling salesmen, consultants and such who travel coast to coast to coast - now is the time to register and take advantage of a huge potential win fall on your travels! Even if you aren't that frequent of flyer you should register as you'll earn at least 25 WestJet dollars on one round trip flight within our great nation!
