We updated our general credit card page on Rewards Canada. We've kept the breakdown by category of card but now we provide full descriptions with the cards rather than just list the sign up bonus. You can find the page here and over the next month or so it will be populated with many more cards!

Miles & More Award Ticket Sale - Save up to 50% on award tickets to Europe from Montreal and Toronto

As we do each month we bring you the latest set Miles & More "Meilenschnaeppchen" discounted mileage awards!  This month we see both Economy Class and Business Class options for flying out of Toronto from Lufthansa, Economy Class also on LH out of Montreal and a 50% discount on economy class travel on Austrian Airlines between Toronto and Austria. The Lufthansa offers are for travel between Jun 1 and Jul 15, 16 (must be booked by Feb 29) while the Austrian offers are good for booking and travel until Mar 31, 16

You can redeem Miles & More miles for round trip tickets on Lufthansa from Montreal to Europe for only 30,000 miles. This is a 50% discount off the normal Economy Class award ticket price of 60,000 miles. The Austrian Airlines option out of Toronto is also a full 50% discount on economy class. Granted all these tickets will also have fuel surcharges but this is still a pretty good deal when you look at it as a whole in terms of miles+cash outlay.



For business class between Toronto and Europe on Lufthansa, the discount is a bit below 50% as you need to redeem 55,000 miles for round trip flights that normally cost 105,000 miles.

The crazy thing is that you can actually get the round trip economy class tickets for only $5,000 in credit card spend (and a $120 annual fee). How so? As we usually mention in this post you can boost your Miles & More account with the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express. Currently the card comes with a 20,000 Starpoint sign up bonus. When you convert those 20,000 Starpoints to Miles & More SPG will award you an additional 5,000 miles. Which gives you 25,000 miles but if you spend $5,000 on the card you'll have 25,000 Starpoints and the 5,000 Miles bonus giving you the 30,000 miles required for this flight. Of course fuel surcharges and taxes are extra.

Simply book the offers seen here by February 29 (Lufthansa) or March 31st (Austrian).

February 5 Update: New Rewards Canada series: Ultimate Credit Card Portfolios; Aeroplan Choice Hotels bonus and WestJet Fast Track to Silver

Today we are pleased to bring our the newest series on Rewards Canada: Ultimate Credit Card Portfolios! This series will look at the ultimate three card wallet (1 Visa, 1 MasterCard, 1 Amex) for a variety of loyalty programs, spending habits, travel habits and more. The first porfolio in the series is for the program most popular on Rewards Canada and for most Canadian travellers, Aeroplan. Air Canada announced earlier this week that they will be launching new service between Montreal and Hamilton. The flights will operate twice daily except for Saturdays. The new route launches on May 24 and will be a good option for those needing to get to the western Toronto area and Niagara region but not having to go downtown. (Source Air Canada)

Best Western has just revealed the details of their Spring systemwide promotion. It is the return of their BW Travel Card promotion that awards a $25 Travel Card when you complete 2 separate stays. Just like their last bonus 500 points per stay, it is a relatively weak offer especially considering it requires 2 stays to achieve the travel card. For many you are probably better off taking advantage of the 8x Aeroplan Miles offer for BW stays unless those stays are outside of the U.S., Canada or Caribbean. Then you should at the Miles & More offer of Triple Miles Worldwide.

WestJet Rewards: Fast Track to Silver Elite Status

WestJet is at it again with another Fast Track elite status offer! Unlike previous offers that pushed you to Gold Status this one boosts your status to Silver. Granted it takes less spend than the Fast Track to Gold offers we have seen and really should be achievable by many of you as long as you have 2 or 3 round trips planned over the next two months!

Receive WestJet Rewards Silver Elite Status with a minimum $700 qualifying flight spend on flights flown (or minimum 5 WestJet flights flown). Register online (Registration is required) Until Apr 3, 16

What does Silver Elite Status with WestJet provide:

• First checked bag free 
• Four airport lounge vouchers 
• Four advance seat selection vouchers

Normally you don't hit Silver status until you spend $4,000 with WestJet (before taxes and fees) so this is pretty decent offer in that you only have to spend $700 to get it. Also I like that WestJet has added a flight component as an option so if you fly 5 really cheap WestJet segments you can also get the Silver Elite status.

Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for February

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of February! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards that have very good acquisition offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the sign up bonus, but when most or all of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when not taking into account insurance packages and other non-reward benefits. In fact all 5 cards on this list for February are first year free so you can try them out at no cost, get over $1,000 in rewards and decide later on if the card is right for you. All the while earning the sign up bonus which can be used to subsidize your travels!
   
No change this month from January. Same 5 cards. Hopefully someone steps up next month with something big and more attractive so this list can change!

A mainstay offer here on Rewards Canada, the American Express Gold Rewards card has its first year fee of $150 waived and will award you 25,000 Membership Rewards points when you complete $500 in spending in the first three months. That 25,000 points is worth a $250 travel credit via Amex's TripFlex feature or can be converted to 25,000 Aeroplan Miles (1 Round trip Economy Award ticket within North America) or 25,000 British Airways Executive Club Avios (as much a 3 one way Economy Award tickets in North America, see this post for details.)


American Express Air Miles Platinum Credit Card - 2,000 Reward Miles (Apply here)
A newcomer to our monthly Top 5 sign up offers, the American Express Air Miles Platinum card comes first year free and comes with a 2,000 Reward Miles sign up bonus when you complete $500 in spending in the first three months. That 2,000 Miles is worth anywhere from $220 to $300 in flight value when you get around to redeeming them.

Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Visa - 30,000 Points  (Apply here)
The best no foreign transaction fee card in Canada makes it to this list due to a very strong acquisition offer. I mean who can complain with 30,000 points awarded on approval and a certificate for a free night stay at a Category 1-4 hotel for a potential of 5 free nights, all at no cost as the card has the annual fee waived in the first year! They also give you a 15 night credit into the mix which automatically provides you with Marriott Rewards Silver Elite status. There is also a 50,000 Point offer meant only for Marriott Elite members which many non-elites have had success with when they apply for it. (You may or may not get the full 50k and if they find out you are not Elite you may only receive the 30k)

Scotiabank Gold American Express Card - 20,000 Points  (Apply here)
A very strong card in the earn category for Gas, Grocery and Dining/Entertainment purchases, the current sign up bonus for the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card is 20,000 points when you reach $500 in spending in the first three months. That 20,000 points is equal to a $200 travel credit and since this card is a book anywhere card you can book the travel how you want when you want and when the charge shows up on your account you can redeem the points against the charge. The card normally has a $99 annual fee but of course that is waived in the first year!

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card - 15,000 Miles (Apply here)
Back to its standard sign up bonus of 15,000 miles the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card remains here since it still has the first year fee waived. That means those 15,000 are free and worth well over $200 and you'll save the $120 fee in the first year.

News around the Calgary area yesterday surrounded the slashed of prices for flights from Alberta by WestJet. Called the 'Alberta Effect', WestJet has seen a sharp drop in bookings all of the sudden showing that our economy here is still tanking and people don't have the money or don't want the spend the money to fly. They are hoping the 'Alberta Effect' doesn't spread to other provinces! Airlineroute.net recently posted a list of flights being reduced or cancelled by WestJet here in Alberta:
