If you are a member of Air France KLM's Flying Blue program and happened to fly KLM within Europe (not connecting from Canada) you'll know that your membership in their FFP waived checked luggage fees. That is all changing on October 1st of this year. Unless you hold elite status with FB this is what you'll be paying for checking luggage on those Intra-Europe flights (Source KLM)

For bookings on or after 1 October 2014, Ivory members will receive a 50% discount on the first piece of check-in baggage when travelling within Europe on a KLM Economy Class ticket.

What’s new?

• Ivory members can book one bag for €7.50 (one-way) by arranging it before arrival at the airport. The fare for checking in baggage at the airport without booking in advance is €15 (one-way)

Delta SkyMiles has changed the amount of miles you earn Hertz Rentals. Previously it was 100 SkyMiles per day now the earn rate is 500 SkyMiles per rental. Good news for those of you who rent for short periods and of course not so good news on those weekly or longer rentals you credit to SkyMiles. SkyMiles Medallion members will now earn between 1,000 and 1,250 per rental. (not entirely sure when this change happened, could be old, might be new but anyways we thougth we'd pass along the news!)\

The one question I have been asked the most over the past few months via email, the blog, twitter and more has been "Do you know when the Amex bonus for transferring Membership Rewards Points to British Airways will return?"

I talked to Amex and their response is "there are no transfer bonuses in the works." What this means is anyone's best guess. I personally don't think we'll see one in the short term ( 1-3 months) but who knows I could be wrong! I'm hoping they haven't killed the bonus as like many of you I'm sitting on a lot of points waiting to be transferred to BA. I recently took advantage of the Diners Club Club Rewards 30% transfer bonus to BA for a small transfer (4 - Avios 9,000 RT flights) but that bonus just nets out a little above an Avios per dollar whereas the Amex transfer with a 50% bonus would net out closer to 3 Avios per dollar for me. Here's to keeping our fingers crossed that it will be around sometime this year! On another Amex question note, some readers have asked when and if the 20K sign up bonus for the SPG Amex will return and same answer, no plans at the moment for that bonus. We usually see it twice a year so my guess is that it will be sometime this fall.

We reached out to TD mbna for some clarification on the end of their partnership with Choice Hotels for the mbna Choice Privileges MasterCard to see what happens to those cardholders who have the card or just applied by June 9th to get the larger sign up bonus. The good news is that it looks like you can keep the card until Sep 27 and also get the larger sign up bonus as long you meet the minimum spend by July as was requried int he promotion.

"Choice Hotel customers will have all the same benefits of the program up until the 27th of September. Any regular or bonus points they incur will be added to their account. All customers will receive a notification of the termination by August. This notification will explain the termination and what will be happening to their Choice Hotel points. The notification will also cover the terms and conditions of their new rewards program."

Thai Airways is making some drastic, negative changes to their Royal Orchid Plus flight awards this September. I know there aren't that many Canadian's using Royal Orchid Plus but for those of you who are should look at cashing out your miles before September 1st as many award flights are going up in price (as much as double, for example Bangkok-Los Angeles in First Class goes from 230,000 ROP miles to 460,000 ROP miles!) Cathay Pacific has launched a new program called "Enhance" where passengers booked in Economy or Premium Economy will be able to 'bid' for upgrades on their flights. It is in a trial period right now but we mention this to you as Toronto is included in the list 9 trial cities. Here is how 'Enhance' works:

During the trial period, we invite passengers booked on Economy Class and Premium Economy Class to place an offer for a chance to upgrade, with the following criteria:

• Passengers travelling on 1 of our 9 selected routes: Perth, Toronto, Newark, Moscow, Paris, London, Surabaya, Cebu or Seoul.
• Enhance is only available for selected flights and applicable fare classes on these routes where tickets are issued at specific countries/regions.

Aeroplan Connections - Earn up to 15,000 Bonus Aeroplan Miles for referring new members (Targeted offer, join the conga)

Last week Aeroplan began emailing some of their members (us included) with a new acqusition campaign called Aeroplan Connections. The offer is targeted but if for some reason you missed the email or it went to your junk mail folder here is the link.

Simply input your Aeroplan number and it will let you know if you were a targeted member or not.

Essentially this promo is a refer a friend bonus that awards the referred with bonus Aeroplan miles, up to 15,000 (enough for a short haul flight) for getting people to join Aeroplan and fly on Air Canada. If you were targetted, the first 1,000 miles is super easy, you'll get that for simply sending an email to friends or family asking them to join.

The next 7,000 miles are a little harder but not that hard if the people you refer have not joined Aeroplan yet as you'll get 1,000 miles per person who joins up to a maximum of 7 times. The final 7,000 can be much harder as you need those 7 connections you referred to complete flights on Air Canada to earn more bonus miles and those flights have to be booked by August 24th with all travel confirmed by November 30th. Only real news today was the split between TD mbna and Choice Hotels. The Choice Privileges MasterCard is no longer available. Read all about it here. If there was a category that stood NOT to lose a card it is the hotel category as there aren't too many option for Canadians. Now we could definitely use a thinning out of the Travel Points category but that is unlikely to happen, in fact it seems that it will only continue to grow.
