As we mentioned earlier this fall, the partnership between Alaska Airlines and Icelandair returned. It started off with only being able to earn miles on each others flights along with reciprocal elite benefits but now you can once again redeem Mileage Plan miles for Icelandair flights. Seeing that Icelandair serves a decent amount of cities in Canada and that we have a Mileage Plan co-branded credit card this is good news. The more ways you get to use your miles the better.  Happy redeeming for those flights to Iceland and/or Europe!!  And it doesn't take a lot of miles to redeem. 22,500 miles is all that's needed for a one way economy class ticket (low season) between Canada and Iceland. Seeing that the Alaska Airlines World Elite MasterCard has a 25,000 mile sign up bonus you can achieve that flight for only the $75 annual fee and whatever taxes/fees are charged on the award ticket.  (Source View from the Wing)

If you are planning to use your British Airways Executive Club Avios to redeem for International Business Class seats (or economy) on TAM between Toronto and New York be warned that the route is dropping to only 2 flights per week instead of 3 between April and June of next year. Alaska Airlines and Icelandair partnership returns - great news for Canadians

With Icelandair's recent onslaught of Canadian flights we were super excited to see this news come across many U.S. blogs this morning! The Icelandair and Alaska Airlines partnership is back! This is great news for Canadians who fly on Icelandair out of Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax (and hopefully more soon like YOW and YYC) as crediting these flights to Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan makes more sense than Icelandiar's own Saga Club program. The Mileage Plan program is one of the best and most versatile out there so now with the renewed partnership that launches on October 1st you will be able to earn Mileage Plan miles on all Icelandair flights. Of course reciprocating you can also earn Icelandair Saga Club points on Alaska Airlines flights.

As well elite benefits will be extended between the two airlines

As an added benefit, starting Oct. 1 Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan MVP Gold and Gold 75K members will receive complimentary access to Icelandair's Saga Lounge at Keflavik International Airport in Reykjavik and Icelandair Saga Gold and Silver members will enjoy complimentary access to Alaska Board Room lounges in Seattle, Portland, Anchorage and Los Angeles.

What we don't know yet are the redemption details of the partnership. If and this is a big if the redemption levels for using Mileage Plan miles on Icelandair flights are reasonable the value of the Canadian mbna Alaska Airlines World Elite MasterCard just went up even more! (Read our review of the card here) Not only does Mileage Plan have relatively good awards on Alaska Airlines flights but offers decent award levels and one way award options on airlines American, Cathay Pacific, Air France KLM, Emirates and more! This program is the hidden gem for Canadians! Just because Alaska Airlines only flies to five cities in B.C. and Alberta it doesn't mean that those of you in Ontario, Quebec or other provinces shouldn't consider the program!

Icelandair is adding service to Montreal starting in May 2016! This will be the airline's 5th Canadian destination with four flights per week out of YUL. Not only is Icelandair a great way to get to Iceland but in many cases they have the best fares to get to mainland Europe! Icelandair does have their own frequent flyer program called Saga Club but outside of travel (flights, hotels, car rental) the only way to earn Icelandair Saga Club points in Canada is via Diners Club Club Rewards MasterCard, Hilton HHonors or points.com transfers. Yesterday Icelandair released their new inflight safety video on Youtube. It is already starting to get some attention on social media and rightfully so. Following in the footsteps of airline like Air New Zealand, who are vey famous for their various unconvential safety videos, Icelandair has produced their own non-convential video. Unlike Air New Zealand who go for more of a comedic approach, Icelandair has instead gone for a tourism approach by integrating highlights of Iceland in the video. Here it is for your enjoyment, I hope you like it as much as I did. Now the question is when will Air Canada do something like this with their inflight videos?

Mar 5 Update: Popular Travel Hacking method shut down, Icelandair check in bonus, great LifeMiles transfer bonus

Yesterday we lost a dear friend in the travel hacking world. The American Express Business Gold Rewards Card was 'refreshed' but in other terms went through a sort of devaluation for those who work the system, albeit without breaking any rules. This card used to offer 25,000 Bonus Membership Rewards Points as a sign up bonus when you spend $3,000 in the first three months but what made it a travel hacking favourite was the first year free option, which meant that other than regular card spend you would get those 25,000 Membership Rewards Points for free (translates to $250 travel credit, 25,000 Aeroplan Miles or 25,000 Avios). Well the first year free is gone which and the actual annual has been increased to $250 essentially wiping out the value of the sign up bonus which remains at 25,000 but which now requires $5,000 in spend in three months. The only added bonus in the card refresh is the ability to earn 1 bonus point (double points) for spending at select American Express merchants. There is a small list of participating merchants of which the cardholder chooses 3 to earn the double points at. Looks like they are taking a page out of the now defucnt conusmer Choice and ChoicePlus cards where you got to select 5 merchants for double points. This bonus on the Business Gold is capped at $250,000 in spend with those select merchants.

As we see too often with these travel hacks, they almost always come to an end and such is the case here as Amex has closed the door on this one. 

The 100% bonus on transferring LifeMiles is back. It is kind of like buying miles except you have to have the miles to start with and be able to transfer them to someone else. This works really well for family members who would redeem miles on behalf of their family anyways or if a friend is willing to have you transfer miles to their account and then back to you so you can ultimately buy miles twice. With the offer you are essentially buying the miles 1.5 cents per mile as the cost to transfer is US$15 per 1,000 miles. If you don't have LifeMiles you'll just have to wait for the next buy miles bonus that offers the miles at the same price. See the bonus offer section below for more details

Feb 19 Update: Icelandair succeeds in Edmonton, Lufthansa Business Class sale, Aeroplan bonus returns for the UPS Store

With the Olympics now in full swing and Canada at ten medals of the time of writing this its no wonder there isn't much news in the loyalty world right now.

Icelandair's Edmonton service doesn't start until early next month but the sheer success of bookings has led Icelandair to move the service from summer seasonal to year round along with additional flights which means that service will be as much as 5x weekly between YEG and KEF. (Source Icelandair). Icelandair does have their own frequent flyer program called Saga Club but outside of travel (flights, hotels, car rental) the only way to earn Icelandair Saga Club points in Canada is via Diners Club Club Rewards MasterCard or via points.com transfers.

In the bonus offer section be sure to check out the Aeroplan bonus for flights to Europe (just in case you missed it on the RC blog earlier today) but also the return of an Aeroplan bonus for joining UPS' Get More program and making your first purchase. This is an easy way to earn 700 Aeroplan miles (regular 500 mile sign up bonus + this 200 mile bonus) when you complete your first purchase and that first purchase needs only to be $1 before taxes. It's pretty rare to earn that many miles on such a little spend. Be sure that the UPS Store properly inputs your Get More and Aeroplan numbers as people have reported that it has not been done correctly by some of their employees!

Sep 3 Update: Lots of card changes from Amex and BMO, Icelandair announces Edmonton & Vancouver service, Aeroplan Best Western Fall offer

Lots happening today (and over the weekend) in the world of travel rewards and more in Canada!

As we mentioned a few times in August, expect lots of changes to travel rewards credit cards in Canada this September and they are appearing very quickly! If you missed it earlier today, we already covered the positive change to the American Express Gold Rewards Card and the BMO Rewards World Elite MasterCard. But those are not the only two cards changing, here is a list of other new offers or changes:

The American Express Platinum Air Miles has a limited time sign up bonus of 1,200 Air Miles reward miles when you charge a total of $500 in purchases to your Card within your first three months of Cardmemberhsip. Offer is valid until November 30, 2013.

The BMO Air Miles World MasterCard also has a new limited time sign up bonus of 2,000 Air Miles Reward Miles. Earn 1,000 Bonus AIR MILES reward miles after your first card purchase and earn 250 Bonus reward miles each month you spend $1,000 for the first four months.

In non-credit card news, Icelandair has announced new service between Edmonton and Reykjavik for Summer 2014. The flights will operate four times weekly from March 26 and continue until January 2015. They also announced Vancouver-Reykjavik service that will operate twice weekly from May 13 and continue until October 12. Always great to have more flights options to use points. You can always book their reasonably priced flights on a travel points credit card that you can redeem points for the charge or you can go the Icelandair Saga Club route. Outside of flying on Icelandair your best sources for Icelandair Saga Club points in Canada are via Hilton HHonors or the Diners Club Club Rewards MasterCard. (Route news Source: Icelandair)
