NOW LIVE: IHG Rewards Club PointBreaks - 95 Hotels (5 in Canada) for only 5,000 to 15,000 points per night until May 31, 19


The latest IHG Rewards Club PointBreaks hotels are now available for booking! We didn't get any previews this time and this set has only 95 hotels that can now be booked for 5,000 points to 15,000 points per award night for stays until May 31, 2019.  For Canada we see a little jump from 2 hotels last time to 5 for this set.

Remember the PointBreaks rules are that a member can only book up to 2 reward reservations per hotel participating in the individual offer (ie 2 at PointBreaks hotels and 2 at Last Minute Reward Night hotels).  My tip to get around this would be to book 2 reservations with one IHG Rewards Club account and then have your spouse book 2 more etc. Of course this is dependent on both accounts having enough points to redeem for these awards.

Also be sure to book these ASAP as soon as the list comes out as once the allotted nights are booked at certain locations those hotels will fall off the list.

Why are IHG Rewards Club PointBreaks such a great deal? Because they offer reward nights at participating IHG hotels Worldwide for as little as 5,000 Rewards Club points. For those of you not to familiar with IHG Rewards Club , normal redemption rates for Rewards Club reward nights run from as low as 10,000 points for some Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express locations to 70,000 points for ultra-luxurious InterContinental locations and even these locations can participate in Pointbreaks.

PointBreaks now have multiple redemption levels where all hotels are not 5,000 points like they used to be pre-2018, some are now at that level but there are also hotels at 10,000 and 15,000 points. IHG states this allows them to provide more hotels for the promotion and so far that was holding true with each list being above 150 hotels compared to about 100 or so when the list used to only be 5,000 points. However this time we are below 100 hotels!

Remember as well there is a 75% purchase bonus for buying IHG Rewards Club points until February 28 With the bonus when you buy the most amount of points you can get up to 24 nights at IHG hotels if redeeming via the PointBreaks 5,000 point level, 12 nights at 10,000 and 8 nights at the 15,000 point level. Even at that highest level it is like you are buying each night for only US$86.

WestJet Rewards: Up to Double Elite Qualifying Spend on flights within Canada or between Canada and the U.S.


Here's a great new offer from WestJet Rewards! You can earn up to Double Qualifying Spend credit on flight you book with WestJet within Canada and to the U.S.. You must book Econo or higher fares by March 31 for travel until April 17. The bonuses vary based on the fare class you buy:

February 22 Update: Flair Airlines ending some U.S. routes early, IHG Rewards Club to test variable award pricing, Up to 30% off Jet Airways flights from Toronto

 

Flair Airlines is cutting service to Miami and St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport (near Tampa Bay) in Florida, and Palm Springs, California earlier than planned. The airline will contact you if you are booked on any of these flights. (Source Global News)

 

IHG Rewards Club is going to be testing out dynamic or variable award pricing for their free hotel award nights. Now common place among many loyalty programs, we here in Canada are most accustomed to Aeroplan's Market Fare Rewards where the amount of miles you need will depend on the price of the flight. However we don't know what they mean exactly by variable pricing. Will it be tied to price or will it be fixed variable like Marriott Bonvoy with Peak, Standard and Off-Peak pricing. We also don't know is how big this test will be as in if it will be across the board or only at select hotels. (Source IHG) HT Head for Points

February 21 Update: Accor Hotels changing loyalty program to Accor ALL in 2020, Air Canada launching Calgary-London ON flights and more


Accor Hotels (the relatively new owner of Canada's Fairmont Hotels) announced that they are changing their loyalty program again in 2020! In the 18 years of running this website there has not been one loyalty program that even comes close to the number of name or spelling changes that this hotel chain's program as gone through and those changes have only been since 2009 or so. It used to be A|Club then it went to Le Club accorhotels (all lower case) and then Le Club AccorHotels (capitalized now) and in 2020 it will become Accor ALL with the the ALL representing Accor Live Limitless. There aren't too many details yet about the new program other than the addition of one more elite status level, enriched benefits for elite members and new partnerships that will expand the experience side of the program. Air Canada announced today that they are going to provide summer seasonal service between Calgary and London Ontario. The daily flights will be operated with Air Canada Rouge A319 aircraft from late June to mid October. (Source Air Canada)

Special shout out to Anshul (Points Miles and Bling) for alerting us to this news. It appears that Aeroplan is now charging Carrier Surcharges (YQ) for award tickets on Air China to/from Canada. However for the time being those charges are not being levied for Air China flights to/from the U.S. so you may want to come up with some creative award routing and positioning flights to avoid those fees.

875 Free Coast Rewards Points for joining + 875 Coast Rewards Points on your first stay - enough for one free night


Here is a rare bonus from Canada's own Coast Hotels Coast Rewards. If you join the program by February 28th they will give you 875 points right off the bat. So everyone go out and join Coast Rewards now. Then complete one stay by April 30 and they'll award you another 875 Coast Rewards points. In total you'll now have 1,750 points (plus the base points you earn on the stay) which are enough for a free night award in a comfort room at any of their hotels including the Waimea Plantation Cottages in Hawaii! Or you could choose to have three room upgrades as those run only 500 points each.

February 19 Update: 7x Aeroplan Miles for Apple Store purchases (online), Wyndham Rewards abandoning the one flat rate award redemption and more!


You can earn 7x Aeroplan Miles when you shop the Apple Store via the Aeroplan eStore until February 21. This is a lot of miles if you need to buy some of the more expensive Apple stuff! Find out more here
Some mileage earning examples:
·         AirPods - retailing at $219 = 1,533 miles
·         iPhone Xs – starting at $1,379 = 9,653 miles
·         MacBook Pro – starting at $ 1,729 = 12,103 miles


And another Aeroplan eStore offer - this one is targeted so check your emails. I was targeted to receive a 200% bonus on my next purchase via the Aeroplan eStore. It doesn't say anything about only one bonus per transaction so I wonder if I can tie this in with the Apple offer above!

Once again another exclusive targeted offer - this one from AIR MILES so check your email to see if you got it as well. 100 bonus AIR MILES for a $25 Car Wash Product purchase - It says it can be earned 5x per day! Don't know if I really need that much product however!

 Looks like Wyndham Rewards' experiment of only having one point level for free night awards across the board may not be what they envisioned. The flat rate 15,000 points per night at any property will come to an end on April 2nd. As of the third there will be three levels, 7,500, 15,000 and 30,000 points. View from the Wing tells us about a third of the hotels will drop to 7,500 (that's a good thing) and about 200 hotels will jump to the 30,000 points (that's not good) You can learn more about the Wyndham Rewards changes here. There are some other updates to the program as well which we will cover more in-depth later this week.
