Fairmont Hotels Air Canada Altitude Member offer - Room upgrade, $50 hotel credit and daily breakfast for 2

Yet another Fairmont Hotels offer to pass along! This offer is for those who are Air Canada Altitude 25K and 35K members, I mean you can try to book it without being one they may not check your credentials at check in but that's a risk you must but willing to take should they do ask.

This offer provides a room upgrade (based on availability at check in), daily complimentary breakfast for 2 and a $50 hotel credit on stays of 2 or more nights.. It is valid at most Fairmont locations in Canada and lots of locations in the Caribbean, US and Mexico.

The offer must be booked by December 31 for stays until March 31, 2021

Here's a look at the rates for the Air Canada Altitude offer at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier:

And here are the CAA rates (note this hotel isn't part of the CAA offer we posted about just over a week ago)

That's $57 less per night for the CAA rate, or $114 total for a 2 night stay. Compare this to the Air Canada Altitude offer that provide a $50 credit and daily breakfast for 2 and you might come out slightly ahead. If you don't have CAA then of course the AC Altitude offer is the better bet. As well we only look at one hotel here, this offer might be even better or worse depending on the location and the dates of travel.

The Rewards Canada Weekly Wind Up for October 3 to 9, 2020

Today we are starting a new feature here on Rewards Canada that seems to a popular blog thing to do and that is to provide a recap, roundup or in our case we'll call it a wind up of all the posts from the week. The reason behind such posts is that it provides a resource for readers to catch up on posts they may have missed. Sites like ours do tend to post a lot during the week and many readers can miss those posts as they tend to get buried on the next page of the blog or way down the list in the case of RSS readers like Feedly.

I would also recommend subscribing to our newsletter as that is your other way to get your summary of what has happened on  Rewards Canada during the week and it tends to have even more information as it also covers our bonus offers posted etc.

Aer Lingus Flash Sale - Fly from Canada to Ireland for as little as $299 round trip including all fees

A day late with this offer since it actually came out yesterday but there are still about 7 hours left if you are for a last minute booking to travel to Ireland next year between January and May. Aer Lingus has a 48 hour sale for their flights between Canada and Ireland starting at $299 including all taxes and fees - and that's for a round trip flight! You need to book by midnight tonight.

All this being said the sale is for their bare bones tickets with the most restrictions and only one carry on bag. You'll have to pay extra if you check luggage and that starts at $54.99 for a small lighter bag each direction. So that's where their next fare up can make more sense as it is $50 more each way and includes one checked bag up to 50lbs, advance seat selection and a complimentary meal.

Here's an example of the cheap no baggage fare for January:

And the same flights with the next fare up with the free bag, seat selection and meal:

As you can see it is $99.98 more for the round trip flight with the extras. If you know you are going to check luggage you will most definitely want to book this higher fare class.

October 9 Update: Purchase Give A Mile's limited edition Pilsner to help fund flights of compassion, Amex Centurion Lounge in JFK now open & Turkish Airlines further delays Vancouver launch

Shout to our friends at Give A Mile who sent us their limited edition Reservoir Pigs Pilsner brewed by Calgary's Village Brewery. A portion of each sale of this beer goes to Give A Miles to help provide their flights of compassion. As you may or may not know we have been partnered with Give A Mile for several years now and super proud to support them in any way we can and we do have to thank our readers as well who have donated miles or cash to them to help fund their fligths of compassion. The charity recently provided their 712th flight of compassion which is a huge accomplishment considering they were at 300 flights when we starting working together. Be sure to order some of this brew to help them out! Learn more about and order the beer here

American Express opened up their newest Centurion Lounge today. Their new flagship lounge is open at New York's JFK airport. It's located in Terminal 4 and that's the terminal that WestJet is in so this is good news for those who hold The Platinum Card from American Express as you'll be able to access this lounge once WestJest resumes flights to JFK. Learn more about the lounge here. And check out this video on twitter of the very first person to visit the new lounge.

It has been awhile since we provided HNN's hotel occupancy statistics for Canada. Now that we are in fall and starting to see higher rates of COVID-19 cases the overall occupancy rates are dropping again. We peaked in the 40% range back in August but the latest stats for September 27 to October 3 show occupancy down to 34%! (Source HNN)

For the week ending with 3 October, British Columbia (43.2%) was the only province to reach or surpass a 40% occupancy level.

Among the major markets, Vancouver saw the highest occupancy level (34.2%).

The lowest occupancy among provinces was reported in Quebec (19.7%). At the market level, the lowest occupancy was reported in Montreal (16.0%).

Top 7 Cash Back Credit Card Sign Up offers for October - These cards provide the best value out of their welcome bonuses

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 7 Cash Back Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of October 2020! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Cash Back Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards that have very good acquisition (welcome/sign up) offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the just sign up bonus, but when some of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when you grab them strictly for the sign up rewards. This month we see six of the seven cards offering the first year free. Oh and this month we had to go with 7 cards instead of our usual 5 cards due to the four of them all offering the same welcome bonus.

Here are our top 7 cash back credit card sign up offers for October (in order of value)

SimplyCash™ Preferred Card from American Express - 10% cash back on all purchases up to $4,000 (Apply here)
Welcome offer cash back value: $301 ($400 - $99 annual fee) This card is offering 10% cash back on all spending during the first four months of having the card. The 10% is capped at $4,000 of spending for a maximum return of $400 cash back as your welcome bonus. This is the only card on the list that does not have its first year annual fee waived. That fee is $99 hence the welcome bonus sign up value of $301. Cash back on this card is awarded once per year as a statement credit.
Minimum Income: N/A

HSBC World Elite Mastercard - 100,000 points (Apply here)
Minimum value: $300

This card offers a welcome bonus of 100,000 points, split between 20,000 on first purchase and 80,000 more when you spend $5,000 within 180 days of getting the card. The annual fee of $149 is waived in the first year as well meaning these points come to you at no cost other than card spend. The card has a lot of other good benefits like no foreign transaction fees to consider as well! Those 100,000 points are worth $300 in cash back rewards but those points can also be used for $500 on travel credits or converted to British Airways Executive Club, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles or Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer.
Minimum Income: $80,000 personal or $150,000 household or $400,000 in assets at any Canadian Financial Institution

ManulifeMONEY+ Visa  Infinite  - 10% cash back on grocery purchases up to $2,500 (Apply here)
Welcome offer cash back value: $250
This card is offering 10% cash back on grocery spending during the first three months of having the card. The 10% is capped at $2,500 of spending for a maximum return of $250 cash back as your welcome bonus. The card does come with a first year annual fee waiver on the primary card. Cash back on this card is awarded quarterly as a statement credit.
Minimum Income: $60,000 (individual) or $100,000 (household)

BMO CashBack World Elite Mastercard  - 10% cash back on all purchases up to $2,000
(Apply here)
Welcome offer cash back value: $200
This card is offering 10% cash back on all spending during the first three months of having the card. The 10% is capped at $2,000 of spending for a maximum return of $200 cash back as your welcome bonus. The card does come with a first year annual fee waiver on the primary card and allows to redeem as little as $1 cash back at anytime for a statement credit.
Minimum Income: $80,000 (individual) or $150,000 (household)

CIBC Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card - 10% cash back on all purchases up to $2,000 (Apply here)
Welcome offer cash back value: $200
This card is offering 10% cash back on all spending during the first four billing cycles of having the card. The 10% is capped at $2,000 of spending for a maximum return of $200 cash back as your welcome bonus. The card does come with a first year annual fee waiver on the primary card and up to three additional cards. Cash back on this card is awarded once per year as a statement credit.
Minimum Income: $60,000 (individual) or $100,000 (household)

Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite Card
- 10% cash back on all purchases up to $2,000
(Apply here)
Welcome offer cash back value: $200
This card is offering 10% cash back on all spending during the first three months of having the card. The 10% is capped at $2,000 of spending for a maximum return of $200 cash back as your welcome bonus. The card does come with a first year annual fee waiver on the primary card and supplementary cards. Cash back on this card is awarded once per year as a statement credit.
Minimum Income: $60,000 (individual) or $100,000 (household)

TD Cash Back Visa Infinite* Card - 10% cash back on all purchases up to $2,000
Welcome offer cash back value: $200
This card is offering 10% cash back on all spending during the first three months of having the card. The 10% is capped at $2,000 of spending for a maximum return of $200 cash back as your welcome bonus. The card does come with a first year annual fee waiver on the primary card and the first additional card. Cash back on this card can be redeemed at anytime for a statement credit as long as your cash back rewards balance is $25. This limited time offer ends September 8, 2020.
Minimum Income: $60,000 (individual) or $100,000 (household)

Between these seven cards there is over $1,650 in cash back welcome bonus rewards! However even if you only take on one or two you are helping your finances at no cost other than regular credit card spend. We don't really recommend getting all five in one month unless you know you can meet the minimum spend for them all at once, rather you'd want to pick one or two right now, perhaps another next month and so on.

Have credit with Alaska Airlines? You might be targeted to convert it to Mileage Plan miles at an amazing rate!

Today Alaska Airlines launched an initiative similar to Air Canada when you can convert Alaska Airlines wallet credit to Mileage Plan miles. Think of it as Air Canada's option that allows you cancel tickets you have bought and convert them to Aeroplan miles. Aeroplan gives you a 65% bonus on the miles you receive based on their standard buy miles rate which works out to buying those Aeroplan miles for well under 2 cents per mile. This Alaska offer is just as generous if not more - there isn't a bonus but what they are doing is giving qualifying members 10,000 miles for every $100 in Alaska Airlines wallet credit. This means you are buying those very lucrative Mileage Plan Miles for only 1 cent (US$) each!

Here are the terms of this offer:

Offer valid through October 12, 2020 11:59 pm (PT): Qualifying members who receive this offer directly from Alaska Airlines via email can exchange Alaska wallet funds in increments of 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% of their current wallet balance for Mileage Plan bonus miles at an exchange rate of 100 miles per $1. Bonus miles are redeemable for award travel, but do not count toward elite status qualification. All wallet exchanges for miles are final, and wallet credit once redeemed is not refundable. If wallet balance at the time of debit is below what is needed to cover the exchange, the exchange will be canceled. Offer cannot be combined with any other offer. All Mileage Plan terms and conditions apply. Mileage Plan miles do not expire, but if a Mileage Plan account is inactive for 2 years, Alaska Airlines may close the account; miles in a closed account can be reinstated for a fee for up to 1 year after closure. Exchanging wallet credit for Mileage Plan miles pursuant to this offer does qualify as account activity, so your Mileage Plan account will remain active for at least 2 years after the effective date of the exchange.

If you are one who gets this offer in your email you should really consider jumping on it considering Alaska Airlines are flying very few of their Canadian routes! For example if you have $500 in your Alaska Airlines wallet you would get 50,000 Mileage Plan miles. Those miles are worth way more than $500! We value Mileage Plan miles at no less than 1.5 cents (US$) each so you would be coming out well ahead and as long as you keep your Mileage Plan account active you can have those miles banked for as long as you need.

Top 5 Small Business Credit Card Sign Up offers for October - These cards provide the best value out of their welcome bonuses

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Small Business Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of October 2020!  This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards for small businesses that have very good acquisition (welcome/sign up) offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the just sign up bonus, but when some of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when you grab them strictly for the sign up rewards. This month we see four first year free cards on the list! And remember this list is based on minimum value towards travel which we calculate as the minimum value of the welcome bonus less the annual fee. It is entirely possible to receive more value out of the welcome bonuses on some the cards below namely those like Aeroplan and Marriott.

I should note there is one other business card to take a look at and that is the Business Platinum Card from American Express. If you know someone who can refer you to it you can get a pretty big bonus of 75,000 points when you spend $7,000 on the card. The card does have a $499 annual fee so it's minimum travel value is $251 but you can boost that by converting to Aeroplan which would give a minimum $401 value.

Here are our top 5 small business credit card sign up offers for October:

Minimum value: $357
This card is offering 50,000 points when you spend $5,000 on the card in the first three months. On top of that they are waiving the $120 annual fee in the first year which means you get the full value out of those 50,000 points which when redeemed via bmorewards.com for travel will net you just over $357.

Minimum value: $350
This card awards 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points which are awarded after spending $1,500 on the card in three months. Those points are worth at least $500 in our minds which means after subtracting the annual fee you are coming out ahead by $350. In reality you can pull even more value out of the card (into four figures) as we outlined in our post A look at how The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card provides huge value!  Don't forget you get an annual free night with the card as well on the card anniversary date!

Minimum value: $330
Like the other BMO Business card on this list, this card comes with a first year annual fee waiver which means the 3,000 AIR MILES welcome bonus comes at no extra cost. You'll receive 1,000 bonus miles on your first purchase and 2,000 more miles if you spend $5,000 on the card in the first three months of having the card. We value AIR MILES Reward Miles at no less than 11 cents each when you redeem for travel so that puts this welcome bonus value at a minimum of $330.

If you went for all these cards you ultimately could end up with over $1,700 in travel credits but even if you only take on one or two you are helping your travel budget significantly at no cost other than regular credit card spend. We don't really recommend getting all five in one month unless you know you can meet the minimum spend for them all at once, rather you'd want to pick one or two right now, perhaps another next month and so on.

Marriott Bonvoy Week of Wonders - Hotels pricing at off-peak award night rates when you book by October 15

Marriott Bonvoy is celebrating its members and kicking off a Week of Wonders starting today through October 15, 2020. The Week of Wonders provided numerous promotions that Marriott Bonvoy members can take advantage of - some of which are already ongoing like Marriott Bonvoy Escapes, the 50% bonus for buying Marriott points and 2,500 bonus points on stays until October 18. The new offers being provided as of today are the award night sale (which this post mostly focuses on), a sale on items purchased from the Marriott store and a free night when you book stays via Homes & Villas by Marriott International.

The promotion that is most attention worthy is the award night sale and here's what Marriott tells us about it:

Members can discover more of the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio by being able to book rooms with points for up to 33% less than standard rates at more than 7,000 participating hotels and resorts worldwide for stays through November 30, 2020.

That's right hotels around the world are being offered at their Off-Peak price for stays until the end of November when you book by October 15.  All 261 of Marriott's properties in Canada are participating. As a reminder here is the award night points requirement chart for Marriott Bonvoy (click to make larger):

Since the offer is valid for stays until the end of November most of us will be looking at stays here in Canada. I did a random search of about half a dozen hotels across Canada in various categories and they were all pricing at the off-peak price right through to the 30th of November. This can be a good time to use up some of those points you've earned off the Marriott Bonvoy American Express card and other promotions! You'll recall that when you book a five night award night stay you get one night free (the one night that prices at the lowest rate is free) so you can stay at a Category 1 hotel for 5 nights for as little as 20,000 points, a Category 2 for 40,000 and so on. And if you are lucky enough some hotels will be pricing at Off-Peak PointsSavers rates which are even less! Here's the Four Points by Sheraton Edmonton South for 5 nights in November:

It's pricing at Category 1 Off-Peak PointSavers so it is only 4,000 points per night and with one night free on a five night stay you would only have to redeem 16,000 points. The cash rate for that same stay is $480 (includes taxes and fees) which equates to a return of 3 cents per point. Take that redemption value of the 50,000 point welcome bonus on the Marriott Bonvoy American Express card and you have $1,380 value ($1500 points value minus $120 annual fee)

That brings me to the annual free night certificate from that card and with Off-Peak pricing in effect you could have a better chance right now to use that free night at a Category 6 hotel since they price out at 35,000 points for Off-Peak Pointsavers. For example here is the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre which is a category 6 hotel:

It has many nights available in November at the Off-Peak PointSavers rate of 35,000 points meaning you can use your certificate here.

October 7 Update: Double Miles & More Miles on all Lufthansa flights, 50,000 bonus PC Optimum points when you spend $150 with Shoppers online & 9 new bonus offers

As you know a big part of Rewards Canada and pretty much 99.9% of our global site FrequentFlyerBonuses.com is tracking and the posting of bonus offers from all the various travel loyalty programs around the world. One type of bonus that was a rarity up until a few months ago was systemwide bonus for flying on an airline. Pre-COVID airlines were in pretty good shape so they didn't have to entice customers to fly with mileage promotions. Now that's changed due to the pandemic and airlines are doing anything and everything to get butts in seats - or at the very least sway those who are going to fly from competing airlines to their own. So we've seen the re-emergence of systemwide flight bonuses from many airlines around the world and one of the latest to do so is Lufthansa. Right now they are offering double miles on all flights in all bookings classes as long as your register for the offer and then book by October 31 for travel November 1 to December 31. Lufthansa are flying several flights per week to Canada so if you are needing to travel and Lufthansa was on your radar for those flights and you don't credit to another frequent flyer program this promotion is for you! Register online for the promotion (Registration is required then book your tickets online at Lufthansa.com

You can earn 50,000 bonus PC Optimum points when you spend $150 or more online with Shoppers Drug Mart until Oct 11. Learn more about this offer here.
