April 21 Update: Air Canada temporarily suspends transborder U.S. flights, 2x cash back at Rakuten, Emirates pushes back re-launch of flights to July 1

Air Canada has announced the suspension of all U.S. transborder flights as of April 26. This is in response to the extension of the closure of the Canada-U.S. border to non-essential travel for another 30 days. Air Canada has been flying limited flights between Canada and the U.S. since the middle of March primarily for the repatriation of Canadians who were in the U.S. The suspension of flights to the U.S. is currently set to run until May 22.  And how quickly things change - yesterday we let you know about getting 3x cash back at Rakuten but that has dropped back down to 2x now at select retailers for Earth Week. Looking at the offers however shows some retailers are still at 3x or even more. Find out more here.

Emirates has once again pushed back the launch of passenger flights. They are now slated to start up on July 1st, yes not until July! If everything holds true they will start to fly to Toronto once again with a 5x weekly schedule. Chances are that this schedule will change again before then. (Source RoutesOnline)

Limited Time Offer: Increased value in American Express Use Points for Purchases (1,000 points = up to $20!)

On April 17 American Express Canada started new promotions for redeeming Membership Rewards points on non-travel purchases. In light of the current global situation with COVID-19 American Express wanted to continue to provide value to their cardmembers and with virtually no one redeeming or being able to redeem for travel they came out with this offer. The offer, which is a limited time one (we don't know the end date yet) sees the redemption of points for the Use Points for Purchases boosted by nearly 43% to 1,000 points for a $10 statement credit for Membership Rewards Select cards like the American Express Cobalt Card or as high as 1,000 points for a $20 statement credit for Membership Rewards cards like the Platinum Card.

If you are unfamiliar with Amex's Use Points for Purchases, it is their redemption option where you can redeem points for any eligible purchase made on a card that earns Membership Rewards points or Membership Rewards Select points. Typically the rate is 1,000 points for a $7 credit while the rate for travel was 1,000 points for a $10 credit. The topic of being able to use points for any purchases, which is basically a cash back redemption option, has been discussed frequently here on Rewards Canada since early March due to the huge shift away from travel in loyalty programs for the vast majority of Canadians. With families out of work or working reduced hours many have seen their cash flows severely hampered and need avenues to supplement what little income they may have. That's where the shift from travel to cash or cash equivalents rewards comes in. I'm not going to into deep discussion on it in this post since we have covered the topic previously, instead here are the links to the articles should you want to research it further:

Now back to this offer - as already mentioned Amex has increased the redemption value of their points for any purchase you make on your card.  What this means is that on a card like the American Express Cobalt Card you are receiving up to 5% cash back return as the card earns 5 points per dollar on eats and drinks. This move just shot the card further up in the rankings of cards in Canada - not that it can get much higher seeing that it is the best overall card in Canada to begin with. While cards like the Platinum Card now peak at up to 6% cash back return!

Remember as well that you only need to have that 1,000 points to redeem or in the case of the Cobalt Card as little as $200 in spending. Not many cards have this low of minimum points requirement to redeem. You could literally receive the Cobalt card on a Monday, spend $200 by Wednesday and be able to redeem those 1,000 points for $10 by the following Monday.

Here are the Amex cards that you can utilize this promotion with and the equivalent cash back rate of return:
To redeem the points for any purchase you simply have to log in to your Amex account online and click on Use Points for Purchase or via the Amex app and click on the transaction you would like to redeem points for.

Here is a screenshot of being able to redeem 1,000 points for $20 from my Platinum Card:

And a screenshot from my Cobalt Card taken off the mobile app:

I also have the Gold Rewards Card and I can redeem points at 1,000 for $20 for those purchases however the points earned on this card get pooled with the points earned on The Platinum Card so I'm not 100% sure if the 1,000 for $20 rate holds true if you only have the Gold Rewards Card. My guess is that it does but perhaps one of our readers can let us know if this is the case or not. I am also awaiting a response back from American Express as to when we can expect this offer to end.

What do you think of this latest initiative from American Express? Does it give you enough incentive to redeem for non-travel purchases or will you hold out until you can redeem for travel again? Let us know below in the comments!

April 20 Update: Amex Platinum cardmembers to receive annual travel credit replacement, WestJet removes more domestic flights for May, up to 3x cash back with Rakuten

An email was sent out to The Platinum Card from American Express cardmembers late Friday afternoon with their first news about extending benefits that aren't really usable right now. This first bit of news lets cardmembers know that if they haven't used their $200 annual travel credit and it was set to expire between January and September of this year you'll receive a replacement credit. Cardmembers don't have to do anything as American Express will reach out with details on how the replacement will be added to your account.

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan Buy Miles Mystery Bonus – 40% to 60% bonus reported

Alaska Airlines has revealed their next buy miles promotion for the Mileage Plan program that runs until May 31. The bonus varies by member and will be revealed to you after you log in to buy miles. I received a maximum bonus of 40% while OMAAT reports an offer of up to 60%. If you received the latter consider yourself lucky as that is the highest bonus ever seen for buying Mileage Plan miles!! The 40% bonus is pretty typical from Alaska although we do see 50% quite often as well. The 60% however is new and if you get that offer you’ll be buying Mileage Plan miles for as little as 1.72 US cents each. If you received a different bonus from the 40 or 60% please let us know the details in the comments below and we’ll add it to the post.

Reminder: This is definitely a speculative buy as we don’t know when full fledged travel will resume but if I were to buy any type of miles or points it would be Mileage Plan miles as they are some of the most valuable in the world. Short term – they would be used for domestic flights to/from/within the U.S. but long term speculators will be grabbing them for flights on Cathay Pacific, JAL and more. If you get the 60% offer this is most definitely a speculative buy I would jump on.

Offer details:
Earn up to a 60% bonus when you buy Mileage Plan miles. Bonus varies by member and will be revealed after you log in. Buy Alaska Miles Here  Until May 31, 20

Receive Air Canada Altitude Prestige 25K status when you earn 50,000 Aeroplan Miles via everyday activities

Air Canada Aeroplan revealed another great stay at home promotion for their members today. Following in the footsteps of their previous promotion where you can receive Altitude Qualifying Status Miles for donating Aeroplan miles you can now earn your way to an actual Altitude status level with this newest promotion. Simply earn 50,000 Aeroplan Miles by May 31 and you will receive Altitude Prestige 25K status that valid through 2021. And it appears that virtually an method of earning miles will count towards that 50,000 level. Sign up for a new Aeroplan card, convert hotel points, convert American Express Membership Reward points, shop online via the eStore and of course earn Aeroplan miles directly via your Aeroplan affiliated credit card!

Here are the details as provided to us by Air Canada Aeroplan:

Between today (Apr 20) and May 31st, when a member earns 50,000 Aeroplan Miles through everyday Travel at home activities (including miles earned via an Aeroplan-affiliated credit card), the member will receive Altitude Prestige 25K status valid through 2021. Members will need to register for this promotion.
* Altitude members can earn towards their next status level - Between April 20 and May 31st, members earn more when they earn Aeroplan Miles, including Bonus Altitude Qualifying Miles (AQM) and the potential for a one-time Altitude status tier upgrade up to a maximum award of Elite 75K.
How can members achieve this?

* As announced earlier, members can earn miles for every five Aeroplan Miles they donate to a charity fighting the COVID-19 crisis, they'll receive one Altitude Qualifying Mile (AQM).
* Convert points from hotels and credit cards - an easy way to earn towards an Altitude status would be to convert points like your Marriott Bonvoy or AMEX Membership Rewards.
* Use an Aeroplan affiliated credit card or apply for one and the initial welcome bonus will count!
* Shop online via the 170+ brands on the Aeroplan eStore. There will be weekly bonuses released, specifically for everyday purchases from favourite brands like Gap, Sephora, Well.ca, Indigo and more.

Air Canada's promotion development team have really kicked things into high gear to have their members engaged and earning miles in the program and I can foresee a lot of our readers pushing their way to earn that 50,000 miles by the end of May. I know for a lot of you this won't be hard - you are sitting on decent amounts of Membership Rewards points and Marriott Bonvoy points where you can hit that 50K mark in one fell swoop. I know I'll consider it for both my wife and I with conversions from American Express and/or Marriott.

What does Altitude 25K get you? It gets you Priority Check In and Priority Boarding, 2 Maple Leaf Lounge passes, 20 eUpgrade credits, Star Alliance Silver and more.

If you are looking for ways to earn more Aeroplan miles to reach this bonus you can look at their Point #3 - The initial welcome bonus from an Aeroplan affiliated credit card will count so without much further ado here are your best options if you want to grab a new card to help reach that 50K:

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card
- Earn up to 30,000 Aeroplan Miles (equivalent to 2 economy short-haul roundtrip flight rewards)1 and first year no Annual Fee for the Primary and 1st Additional Cardholder1. Conditions Apply. Must apply by May 31, 2020.
The key with this card is that you'll get 15,000 miles on first purchase while the other 15K have to be spread out over 3 months. So for this promotion you may be able to squeak out 20K via this card. The good news is the annual fee is rebated in the first year so these miles come to you at no extra cost outside of your everyday spend. Learn more about and apply for the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card here

CIBC Aerogold Visa Infinite Card
- Earn up to 35,000 Aeroplan Miles Plus, get a first-year annual fee rebate. Must apply by July 5, 2020
The key with this card is that you'll get 20,000 miles on first purchase while the other 15K come a year later on your anniversary if you hit $10,000 in spending. That means for this promotion you may can easily just go for the 20K first purchase bonus. And like the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite card this card also has no annual fee in the first year. Between the two you could have 35,000 Aeroplan in a short minute. Learn more about and apply for the CIBC Aerogold Visa Infinite Card here

The Platinum Card
- New Platinum Cardmembers, earn 50,000 welcome bonus Membership Rewards® points when you charge $3,000 in purchases to your Card in your first three months of Cardmembership. Plus, you can receive an additional 10,000 Membership Rewards® points after six months of Cardmembership.
So with this card you do have to spend quite a bit and you'll have to do it quick but the good news with Amex Membership Rewards points is they post really quick - you don't have to wait until the end of your billing cycle and then when you convert them to Aeroplan miles it is virtually an instant transfer. And with 50,000 points converting 1:1 to Aeroplan you have the number of miles required to get that Altitude 25K. Learn more about and apply for The Platinum Card here

American Express Gold Rewards Card
- New American Express® Gold Rewards Cardmembers can earn a Welcome Bonus of 25,000 Membership Rewards® points when you charge $1,500 in purchases to your Card in your first 3 months of Cardmembership .
This card will get you half way to that 50K as the 25,000 welcome bonus points convert 1:1 to Aeroplan. Like the Platinum Card you don't have to wait until the end of your billing cycle to receive your points.  Learn more about and apply for the American Express Gold Rewards Card here

I would consider the above cards your best bets but you also have other card options as like the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card, CIBC Aerogold Visa Infinite Privilege Card and the Marriott Bonvoy American Express card to consider for this promotion.

Like mentioned above if you already have enough points with American Express Membership Rewards simply convert away and you'll have that status PDQ. Same goes for Marriott Bonvoy - if you have 120,000 Marriott Bonvoy points you'll hit that 50K no problem. Bonvoy points convert at a 3:1 ratio so 120,000 points gets you 40,000 Aeroplan Miles and you may be saying  that's not enough! However Marriott provides an additional 5,000 miles for every 60,000 points converted which means when you convert 120,000 points they give you an additional 10,000 miles and that's how you get 50K Aeroplan Miles. Learn more about converting Marriott points here. You can also convert points from other hotel programs - albeit at not as good of a conversion ratio however if you have stranded hotel points that you'll never use have at it and convert them over to Aeroplan to help you get to the 50,000 mile level.

As pointed out by Aeroplan you have other ways as well to reach the 50K. If you already have an Aeroplan affiliated credit card spend away to get those miles and then funnel all your online shopping via the Aeroplan eStore as those miles will count as well.
Recommend reading: Rewards Canada's ultimate guide to earning miles, points, and cash back for online shopping and food delivery services

Finally if you already have Altitude status you are not forgotten with this promotion. You can earn additional AQMs, eCredits and more for your earning:

It's great to see Aeroplan come out with this promotion as so many of us aren't travelling and earning miles via that route and this will definitely encourage many to focus on Aeroplan over other programs for the next 6 weeks or so!

Learn more about and register for the Aeroplan Travel at Home to accelerate your status promotion here

Government of Canada makes it a requirement to wear masks when flying as of April 20

Canada's Minister of Transport, Marc Garneau announced today that everyone traveling by air will be required to wear a mask. Meanwhile if you are travelling by boat, bus or rail you may be required or asked to do so as well:

Today, the Minister of Transport, the Honourable Marc Garneau, announced new measures requiring all air passengers to have a non-medical mask or face covering to cover their mouth and nose during travel. These measures come into effect at noon EDT on April 20, 2020.

When travelling by air, travellers will be asked to cover their mouth and nose:

  • at Canadian airport screening checkpoints, where the screeners cannot always keep two metres of separation between themselves and the traveller;
  • when they cannot physically distance from others, or as directed by the airline employees; and
  • when directed to do so by a public health order or public health official.
Aviation passengers on all flights departing or arriving at Canadian airports will also be required to demonstrate they have the necessary non-medical mask or face covering during the boarding process otherwise they will not be allowed to continue on their journey.  Passengers should follow the current Public Health Agency of Canada’s guidance on face coverings.

When travelling by marine modes of transportation, travellers are encouraged to wear non-medical masks or face coverings whenever possible. In addition, operators of ferries and essential passenger vessels will, when feasible:

  • provide public messaging to travellers about the need to have a non-medical mask or face covering to cover their mouth and nose during their journey when they cannot maintain physical distance from others, and that passengers could be subject to denial of boarding should they fail to comply.
Passengers travelling by rail or motor carrier/bus modes of transportation are also strongly encouraged to wear non-medical masks or face coverings as much as possible. Passengers may be asked by the transportation operator to cover their noses and mouths when physical distancing is not possible.

Learn mor about the new measures here.

AIR MILES extends Gold and Onyx elite status to 2021 and further extends travel change fee waiver

Over the past few weeks we have been passing along the news of many airline and hotel loyalty programs extending the elite status for their members and now AIR MILES has followed suit. The program reached out to us today to pass along the news that Gold and Onyx elite status members will have their status extended to the end of 2021. AIR MILES has also extended the period of their travel change fee waiver to the end of May.

Here are the details that AIR MILES provided to us:

AIR MILES GOLD® and Onyx® Status Extension

For Collectors who achieved AIR MILES GOLD® or Onyx® Collector status in 2019, their status has been automatically extended for an entire year – until December 31, 2021. Given the current circumstances, AIR MILES understands that it may be hard to re-qualify for status in 2020 and wanted to provide our Collectors with the assurance that your status and benefits are secure.

Travel change fee extension

Additionally, AIR MILES is extending its one-time waiver of all AIR MILES change fees until May 31, 2020 for all bookings with travel dates between March 13, 2020 and May 31, 2020. This one-time waiver applies to changes on existing bookings made through AIR MILES. Cancellations, however, are facilitated by AIR MILES in accordance with the policies put in place by individual airlines, travel Partners and providers.

As you can see the travel change fee waiver has been pushed back by a month as that was originally set for April 30. For the extension of status you can see it is for those who achieved status in 2019. I have asked AIR MILES about those who qualified in 2020 as technically their status would end in March 2021. At this time I am still awaiting a response but once I get the answer I'll update the post. Be sure to check back through out the day for that update!

UPDATE 9:59am MT: AIR MILES has confirmed that if you earn status in 2020 it will also be extended to the end of 2021!
