Hotel Review: The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas (Maui)

The Rewards Canada family has been hitting up Maui for the past 10 years and each time we've gone we have always stayed at the same resort - The Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas (read our reviews of that resort here and here) however in April of 2017 Westin opened up a sister resort just north of the KOR Villas and we had to try it out for what would possibly be our last trip to Maui for some time.

As you may have read in my other reviews about this trip, it was booked somewhat late and also for Easter Break which meant it would be busy and many good offers would be gone. One of those deals is that we normally book stays through Naomi at Maui Hawaii Vacations and she does have exclusive up to 50% off rates for the Nanea as she does for KOR. However Maui Hawaii Vacations books up quick, especially for all the popular breaks and of course they were already sold out for Easter Break. So what did I do to book a stay at the new Nanea Ocean Villas? I went to a trusted offer that is always out there for Starwood stays in Hawaii and French Polynesia - the Double Starpoints, 5th night free and up to 35% off offer. You'll have found it on our Starwood Bonus Points page for many years now but here it is just in case you aren't aware of it:
Double Starpoints, Up to 35% Off and 5th night free for stays in Hawaii, Tahiti or Bora Bora. Full Details & Online Booking
We used this offer last year as well and when you add up the 5th night free, the 35% off and the value of the double Starpoints it comes in slightly higher than the rate we could have received from Maui Hawaii Vacations (something like $30-$40 per night for this trip). On top of this the trip also gave additional bonus points thanks to other SPG promotions. I'll cover all those in a separate "Earning Stories" post

We booked ourselves a two bedroom resort view villa as that was all that was available at time of booking on Starwood's site. The difference between the Nanea and the older KOR villas is that the Nanea's two and three bedroom villas are true to that. They are not multiple connecting rooms (Studio + 1 bedroom) brought together to make up the two bedroom configuration.

Flying a different route to Maui this time brought us to the island around lunch time instead of the late evening arrival we were accustomed to with Air Canada. Even with picking up our rental car, getting lunch and making the ~40 minute drive to the new villas we were ahead of the regular check-in time of 4pm. We crossed our fingers our villa would be ready at check-in.  The check-in area of the new resort is vast and spacious and seeing that we were early there was no one else checking in. The good news was that our room was ready and the check-in process was smooth with the lady working the desk being super nice and pleasant. The best part was she advised us that thanks to my wife being SPG Platinum that we had been upgraded to a three bedroom ocean front villa! Thank you Platinum status!

The new resort is as nice as the older KOR villas and has a lot of the same feeling as the sister resort albeit newer.  The villa we were assigned was on the fourth floor of the Hula building and was near some stairs for easy access to the grounds and wasn't too far from the elevators. We were at the hotel just a week before it celebrated its first anniversary and for the most it still feels very new! Sure there's some wear and tear already but nothing disgusting or out of the ordinary for a site of this age and our room was in very good condition.

The space in the rooms are ample and they are all nicely appointed. Each villa has a kitchen, one or two bathrooms, washer & dryer and more. Really they have everything you would expect from booking a condo in Maui but the great addition of being a major hotel resort. That's one of the main things that has kept us coming back to these locations is that you get the best of both worlds. The kitchens are full sized in all the villas (versus Kitchenettes and Kitchens in the KOR Villas) and they have a great ensuite bathroom with separate tub and shower and dual vanity sinks.

The beds are Westin Heavenly beds (such nice beds!) and are all king size. All the villas also include a queen size pull out sofa which means you can sleep 4 in a one bedroom, 6 in a two bedroom and 8 in the three bedroom.

All villas have lanai's with furniture on them, typically two chairs and a table however the bigger the unit you get the more you get on your lanai. As we had the three bedroom our lanai was huge and had a full size table and chairs along with two more chairs with a side table! The lanai extended about 2/3 the length of the full three bedroom villa with access via sliding doors from the living room, the master bedroom smaller of the two additional bedrooms. The farthest additional bedroom had a window with the ocean view but the lanai stops short of it.

The resort grounds are beautiful and reminded us of the KOR Villas with ponds filled with Koi, lots of vegetation and pathways throughout. The pool area is not as spread out as you would find at the KOR Villas and we found this to make for a very crowded feel. Granted it was Easter Break but even outside of the break I think you would be hard pressed to find loungers around the pool or enjoy some space to yourself in the pool after 10am. On some days, to ensure privacy and full enjoyment we did rent some of the covered loungers that faced the ocean. Here is the view from those loungers:
There are also two plunge pools that are set back further to the North side of the resort, those were definitely quieter than the main pool.

The resort also rents out loungers for use on the beach however they do not rent umbrellas and if you have ever been to Maui it's hard to spend a whole day on the beach without any shade! Knowing that, on the days we did want to spend on the beach we actually went down to the KOR Villas since they do offer umbrellas for rent on the beach.

As to food options at the resort there are three. You have Kauhale Market which is resort store that sells a variety of food, has some Starbucks drink options and gifts. Then you have Inu Pool Bar serving all the drinks for around the pool along with a varied menu of appetizers, mains, and desserts. For the most part the drinks from Inu were awesome and a lot of the food was good as well, we did end up ordering food from here on several occasions to enjoy around the pool. Finally the 'fancier' restaurant on site is Mauka Makai. We ate breakfast here one morning to try it out since the rate we booked included a voucher for 35% off all food at Mauka Makai. I have to be completely honest here - it was our worst breakfast on the whole trip.  The hashbrowns had a really funky (not a good funky) taste to them - almost as if the oil being used was really old. The buffet items weren't much better. Suffice to say this breakfast turned us off the restaurant so we did not give it a try for dinner, especially with so many good options in Maui!

Pros
The villas are beautiful and roomy, super comfortable and great to unwind in after a full day in the sun. The resort is nice and gives you the best of all worlds with all the features of a condo but being in a resort setting. The service was outstanding from pretty much everyone we interacted with during our trip. What I also loved about this resort is how many towels they give you in the rooms! As you may know from my other hotel reviews a pet peeve of mine is not having enough towels for the number of people in the room. That's not the case here! There are always more than enough towels for everyone.

Cons
There aren't too many for the Nanea Ocean Villas and are more of my personal opinion with others thinking otherwise. The central pool location is tight and creates a very crowded feel. Some of you may like this and while it looks great and serves its purpose, when you are used to the KOR Villas it it just doesn't seem as enjoyable as the latter. The lack of having umbrellas for rent to use on the beach with the loungers and finally the main restaurant, Mauka Makai, I know we didn't enjoy it and if you look up reviews of it it gets pretty average ratings. That's it for cons!

Final thoughts
I think we were lucky to be upgraded to three bedroom ocean front villa and it really may be hit and miss for most elites to get one but you should know that most villas, whether they are 2 or 3 bedroom, all look the same and have the same amenities. The 1 bedrooms don't have as fancy of ensuite bathroom but should feel similar otherwise.  What you may not get is the huge lanai and the view we got. That of course will all depend on what you book and the actual location of the villa you get. No matter though  you shouldn't be disappointed with this resort. Overall the rooms are fantastic and the service is top notch. It is a great resort for families, couples, and really anyone else! This resort is most definitely a Rewards Canada recommended hotel!

30% Transfer Bonus for RBC Rewards (Avion only) to British Airways Executive Club is back until July 31

Many of you have been asking when this bonus would return as you took advantage of that great RBC Avion card sign up offer we had featured on our site for the past few months! We are happy to let you know this much loved transfer bonus from RBC Rewards to British Airways Executive Club is back.  Once again the not so good news is the bonus is only 30% versus the 50% we were always accustomed to.

The offer is for all of you RBC Avion cardholders (Infinite and Platinum) and runs until July 31. Despite the BA devaluations and only being 30%, this promotion is still a decent deal as BA Avios are a great option for flights to Asia (via Cathay Pacific), short to medium haul within North America  (short haul offer is great on Alaska Airlines or American Airlines see this post here) and even though huge surcharges are added to their UK/Europe redemptions they can still be an alright value because of this bonus based on your spend with the credit card (see my post about Earn & Burn for an explanation). As always though with any frequent flyer program you will have to be flexible in your options when redeeming due to seat availability issues (ie it may be hard to get tickets to Europe in Summer etc.) so take this into consideration before transferring.

Also consider reading our post on  How you can easily get a free flight between Toronto and Dublin, Ireland (pre taxes/fees) or 4 flights for $240+fees as this transfer bonus will work well with it. With the 30% you only have to transfer 20,000 RBC Rewards points to get to the 26,000 Avios level to redeem for these Dublin flights. Compare this to the 65,000 RBC Rewards points it would take to get the same flight and you can quickly see why there is value in the BA program. Heck if you have 65,000 RBC Rewards Points that's three flights to Dublin and back!

Full details on the transfer bonus can be found here

If you don't have the RBC Visa Infinite Avion card yet and this offer intrigues you we still have a special offer on the card where you can get up to 25,000 RBC Rewards points and the first year annual fee waived. Here are the details:

RBC Visa Infinite Avion

  •  Start Avioning Today! Get 15,000 welcome points & the 1st year annual fee waived upon approval†
    - Plus earn 10,000 extra RBC Rewards Points when you spend $1000 in the first 3 months, Plus an annual fee waiver for the first year
  • Earn 25% more RBC Rewards points on travel related purchases1
  • Book flights, hotel stays, cruises, vacation packages, car rentals with RBC Rewards site, powered by Orbitz
  • Transfer your RBC Rewards points towards other eligible loyalty programs (WestJet Rewards, British Airways Executive Club, American AAdvantage, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles. Look for the transfer bonuses to the airlines several times per year!)
  • Premium suite of insurances including trip cancellation3, trip interruption3, travel medical4, car rental insurance5
  • Redeem your points toward your credit card balance using Payback with Points2
  • Instantly save 3₵ per litre on fuel▲ & earn 20% more Petro-Points§ and RBC Rewards points** when you link your Petro-Points card to any RBC Card online.
  • Up to a 2.3% return on your spending depending on which reward ticket you book
  • Unwritten ability to redeem for Business Class tickets although at a lower rate of return when compared to the Avion Reward chart
Apply Now
The only caveat is that you may not get all the points in time to transfer to British Airways before July 31st. Don't fret though as this transfer bonus typically returns late in the Fall.

June 14 Update: 7-Eleven 7Rewards to implement 90 day inactivity rule, Double Points at the Best Western Cambridge and more!

Further to our feature of "Expiry and Inactivity Rules of Canadian Loyalty Programs" Rewards Canada reader Adam B. advised us that 7-Eleven 7Rewards points will expire after 90 days of inactivity as of July 6. That's one of the shortest periods we are aware of for a Canadian program (Spriit Airlines in the US is 90 days). At least with 7-Eleven it is pretty easy to earn or redeem. Find out more here.

Ampli, the newest Canadian loyalty program from RBC and WestJet

RBC and WestJet announced a new partnership between the two companies yesterday via a new loyalty platform called Ampli. Of course the two companies already have an existing relationship and this program will go beyond that. The program, Ampli  (a play on Amplify) is set to launch later this year. The digitally based program will have merchant offers, bonuses and options to use those rewards via their participating merchants and "members who spend on RBC cards and fly with WestJet will further amplify their rewards"

We know from the press release and the media event of this news that Petro-Canada and Chapters Indigo will be involved somehow - most likely as merchant partners. We know that the loyalty programs of all these merchants are not going away. The credit cards and other associated partners within each program will not change unless that programs chooses to change them (really the same day to day business that they have already been engaged in) This means Ampli will run over and above those programs. Since it is going to be digitally based, the first thought that came to my mind was Drop Rewards. It seems to be taking a page out of their book (and other similar app based rewards programs) but it also made me think of what American Express is doing in the U.S.. They killed off their short lived Plenti coalition program to move to the next generation of rewarding loyalty. They are piloting a program that rewards their cardholders with bonus Membership Rewards points for buying specific items from specific retailers - something we have seen from loyalty programs like AIR MILES (think Sobey's):
Customers will benefit by expanding the number of ways they can earn points. The program also helps Amex, by giving merchants another reason to keep accepting American Express cards, which tend to be the most expensive for merchants to process.

Credit card companies have long been able to reward spending at particular types of merchants, using what are known as merchant codes. That’s how credit cards are able to give extra points or cash back on gasoline, travel, hotels and other broad categories.

But targeting individual items on a store’s shelf was a tough barrier to break. Merchants’ inventory systems are different from company to company. AmEx says they were able to solve the problem using blockchain technology developed by Hyperledger. It enables AmEx and merchants to generate product-targeted offers while allowing merchants to keep their own inventory management systems. (Source Associated Press)

Whether Ampli will go the blockchain route will yet have to be seen but it does seem relevant to what they are trying to achieve. I have a feeling they aren't out to sell points like their main competitors - rather it's about collecting data, amplifying their own programs and keeping consumers within their circles with this additional marketing platform. We also know that they are out to capture the Aeroplan and AIR MILES disgruntees (not a real word but one I'll invent today) as can be gleaned directly from interviews with WestJet's Ed Sims and other media mentions. Overall it seems to be a hybrid of a coalition program (a mini-coalition program as we call them now, SCENE, Triangle etc.),  an app based program (think Drop) and perhaps they'll go the blockchain way like Amex is doing.

Do we need another program in Canada? No, not really but the reality is we are seeing the evolution of our market move from the several big players to the many smaller ones. Does it saturate our market? You bet it does. Will all the programs survive? Probably not. Will Canadians join them all? Yes they will, we like to be part of the all.

The good news is that for the next four to five years the Canadian consumer will be the winner. All this competition is good for us and all the programs want you to be part of them so there will be really good offers to lure you in. Then once Air Canada launches their own program in 2020 everyone will compete for a bit and settle down, by 2022 or 2023 we'll probably see these programs scale back their value and we'll all get mad and frustrated with them. We've seen it in the credit card market over the past few years. Everyone was out with amazing offers for everyday spend value or sign up bonuses and while there are a few outliers providing more value now (think Cobalt) most have been reducing the value of their rewards or sign up offers (BMO, TD, etc.) The same will happen with these programs. It's just the natural cycle of them.

Enough from me on this for now. I'd like to hear what are everyone else's initial thoughts on this new program?

IHG Rewards Club Buy Points Flash Sale - 100% bonus for the next 3 days!

It has been sometime since IHG Rewards Club has run a 100% bonus for buying their points! Well only about 4 months but still how dare they not have it any sooner! Anyways for the next three days you can score IHG Rewards Club points for only half a US cent each when you buy 26,000 or more points. The maximum number points you can buy depends on if you have bought any yet this year. If you haven't then you can buy 100,000 points and get 100,000 bonus points on top of that.

For example I can only buy 95,000 as 5,000 have already been bought earlier this year to keep my points from expiring:
This 100% bonus from IHG is always a good way to score some stays for really cheap, especially if you are redeeming for a PointBreaks hotel! Remember Canadians have to pay GST/HST on top of this amount since points.com is a Canadian company.

Here is an example of how this offer can save you some cash. The Holiday Inn & Suites Ottawa Kanata is part of the current PointBreaks so you only need 15,000 points to redeem for room in July. In this case you can actually redeem for a suite that costs $177.18 (non-refundable rate) or $194 (refundable rate) 15,000 points via the buy points deal costs about C$97.50+tax (about $102 to $110 total depending on which province you live in). That means you can save at least $65 for this stay.

100% Bonus IHG Rewards Club Points when you buy points online.  Minimum purchase of 5,000 points. Buy Points here Until Jun 15, 18

Summary of global hotel systemwide bonus points promotions - June Edition

One of the easiest ways to rack up lots of hotel points is to take advantage of the systemwide bonuses that come from many of the big chain programs and also from the lesser known programs. In fact, right now it should be rare for you NOT to earn a bonus. Unless you are staying at a boutique hotel or perhaps an Accor or Fairmont Hotel most other hotels out there have a bonus. So take advantage of it! These systemwide bonuses simply require you to register beforehand and they do not affect hotel pricing as long as you book a point eligible rate which are most rates out there. Of course booking through a third party site like Expedia or Rocketmiles does not count as most chains only award points on bookings that are made directly with them.  Without further ado here are all the current promotions that are available to everyone:

June 12 Update: Starbucks Rewards Stars can expire, contest for 60K IHG Rewards Club Points & targeted Air Canada flight offer for up to 200% bonus AP miles

Looking to boost your IHG Rewards Club balance? You may just be able to if you enter Money We Have's contest for a chance to win 60,000 IHG Rewards Club points. Very fitting for our readers! Simply go to Barry's site and comment on what your Canadian Bucket List travel destination is!

On our feature of "Expiry and Inactivity Rules of Canadian Loyalty Programs" Rewards Canada reader Harry B. let us know that as of April 1st Starbucks Rewards Stars will expire. We looked deeper into Ontario's legislation for the banning of expiring of loyalty points and yes there is a clause that if a program has no one reward option with a value of $50 or more they can expire their currency. Since Starbucks Stars can only be redeemed at 125 for a single drink or food item they have no reward option over $50 hence they can expire them. Use them up if you've been hoarding them. In reality, Starbucks is a reward program where hoarding is really necessary due to speed they can be earned and ease of redeeming. Personally I do hold onto to them for a bit of time, not long, but when I buy food items I redeem for them since it is a better return than redeeming for a drink. For example their new power bowls run over $8 and are a great item to use your free drink/food reward for!

Check your email for the latest targeted Air Canada flight offer - or use the link below in our bonus offers section and input your Aeroplan number to see if you are eligible to earn up to 200% bonus Aeroplan miles for premium class flights on select routes worldwide. Of course our next Air Canada flight is included and we're flying business class but it was booked before the promotion came out and as we all know all flight offers from AC/Aeroplan only count for new bookings. Darn that rule!

Typically by this time of each month we have posted the latest Miles & More bargain award ticket offers but this month there are not any for departures from Canada! Check back next month!

Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for June

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of June! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards that have very good acquisition (sign up) offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the just sign up bonus, but when most or all of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when you grab them strictly for the sign up rewards. In fact all of the cards on this list are first year free so you can try them out at no cost and decide later on if the card is right for you. All the while you earn the sign up bonus which can be used to subsidize your travels!

Come on card issuers give us something new and exciting - that's just me thinking out loud as there are no change once again this month in the cards that are in this Top 5 list, however the 25,000 point offer for the RBC Visa Infinite Avion card has changed slightly. Read more about that offer here.

Here are our top 5 credit card sign up offers for June (in alphabetical order)
BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard - 3,000 Miles  (Apply here)
The best ever sign up bonus for an AIR MILES co-branded card continues to be in the Top 5 sign up list thanks to its 3,000 miles sign up bonus (worth ~$300 or more) and no annual fee in the first year! Even if you aren't a fan of AIR MILES the fact you can get 3,000 miles and them use them as cash rewards for no cost to you should be enough to go out and get this card.

BMO Rewards Mastercard- 20,000 Points  (Apply here)
Included in the revamped BMO Rewards program that essentially sees the program devalued the BMO Rewards Mastercard has never been on this list before. It now makes the list because it actually has a limited time sign up bonus and the card has no annual fee so these 20,000 points (worth ~$142) come to you at no charge.  10,000 points are awarded after the 1st purchase and then 10,000 more if you can hit $1,000 in spending in the first three months.

BMO BMO Rewards World Elite Mastercard- 35,000 Points  (Apply here)
Revamped on January 15th with a reward program that is less rewards on your day to day spend the card still graces this list thanks to its sign bonus and first year free offer. The card now offer a 35,000 point sign up bonus that is worth $250 in travel and since the card is first year free right now (they bill you $150 and then rebate after several months) that means your $250 in travel is free and yes you even get the Priority Pass access and 4 lounge passes included in that first year free.

CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite - 20,000 Points (Apply Here)
The CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite card now offers up to a 20,000 Aventura Points sign up bonus worth up to $400 in travel depending on what type of flight you redeem for and since the annual fee of $120 (and supplementary cards are waived as well) those 20,000 points come at no cost to you.

RBC Visa Infinite Avion Card - 25,000 Points (Apply here)
THIS OFFER IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE
A new version of the 25,000 point offer is out now. Before it was an easy 25,000 points. Now it's 15,000 points + 10,000 more when you spend $1,000 in three months with no annual fee in the first year. Still a great offer even with the spend requirement and it still means you can get 25,000 RBC Rewards points at literally no cost to use towards flights via the RBC airline redemption program or convert to other programs like WestJet (it's 250 WestJet dollars!), British Airways or Cathay Pacific.

If you went for all these cards you ultimately could end up with $1,300 or so in travel credits but even if you only take on one or two you are helping your travel budget significantly at no cost other than regular credit card spend
