WestJet Rewards elite tier status tweaks went live today & our interview with WestJet about it!

Back on December 1st we let you know about changes coming to the WestJet Rewards Elite Status tiers and those changes officially went live today.

We had the pleasure of talking to WestJet’s Senior Vice President of Marketing & Digital, Marshall Wilmot about these changes and the future of WestJet Rewards on today's podcast. You can access the interview via our podcast page at www.rewardscanada.ca/podcast with links to iTunes, Google Play and Soundcloud where you can download and listen to the episode!

As of today these are the requirements to earn status as well as the new earn rates for each level:

First off you can see that now to reach Silver Elite status you only need to spend $3,000 with WestJet on flights within a 12 month period. That's down $1,000 from the current requirement. This should allow more people to hit the lower elite level status sooner.

Teal or regular WestJet Rewards members are the ones who take the loss with these new changes. Gone is the increased WestJet dollars earn rate after hitting $1,500 as is the 35 WestJet dollars bonus when hitting the $1,500 Milestone award level.

Silver Members also see a reduced earn rate of 3% instead of 5% leaving only Gold members earning 5% on spend. There is one big caveat with this however, when you have Silver or Gold Status and you hit your 12 months reset date on spending you earn rate will not drop down to 1% anymore. As long as you have Silver status you will always earn 3% and if you are Gold you will always earn 5%.

WestJet provides the following chart showing the reduced 3% earn rate will actually earn you more since you earn it on all spend and not just on the portion above $4,000 in the current requirement:

This in reality only works well for those in that $4,000 - $5,500 range, spend more than that and you'll actually earn less until you hit that Gold Elite status at $6,000.

For example if you spend $5,800 with WestJet, current Silver members would earn 180 WestJet dollars while under the new earn rate you would earn 174 WestJet dollars. This means a small portion of people in that $5,500 to $5,999 range will earn slightly less.

The good news is that if you were already a WestJet Rewards member that joined before February 6, 2017 they are extending the current earn rates if you are Teal or Silver:
To show our appreciation to our valued members and transition them into the new earn rate structure, we will be temporarily honouring the higher earn rates on WestJet flights for members enrolled in the program prior to February 6, as follows:
  1. Effective February 6, 2017 and until January 31, 2018 Teal members with qualifying flight spend between $1,500 and $2,999 will receive 3% earn on that portion of spend, which is the earn rate they would have received had the change not occurred.
  2. Effective February 6, 2017 and until January 31, 2018 Silver members with qualifying flight spend between $4,000 and $5,999 will receive 5% earn on that portion of spend for their current qualifying year, which is the earn rate they would have received had the change not occurred. Silver members who requalify for Silver when their qualifying year ends will automatically earn the constant 3% under the new program rules instead of the 1% they would have previously started with had the change not occurred.
Members who enroll any time after changes come into effect on February 6, 2017 will be immediately subject to the earn rates.
Overall these changes are primarily good as the constant higher earn rate when you hold Elite status will mean you will be earning more WestJet dollars towards those future redemptions (except for that 5,500 to 5,999 spread for Silver) and the fact that you can hit Silver status with only $3,000 in spending will definitely see the ranks of that level expand and more people should enjoy the benefits of Silver like first checked bag free, 4 airport lounge vouchers and 4 advance seat selection vouchers. However a good proportion of flyers who won't reach those elite levels will take a hit as Teal member if they are in that 1,500 to 2,999 spend range with the loss of the Milestone benefit and the increased earn rate. To me it looks like a move to get those semi-frequent WestJet travellers who won't hit elite status to get on board with the WestJet RBC MasterCard as it provides some of the benefits seen in Silver (first checked bag free). Heck they even put it in the FAQ of these new changes:

As a current Gold Elite member I am looking forward to keeping my earn rate at 5% for the whole year. How about you? What do you think of the changes?

February 2 Update: New American Express Centurion Lounge in Hong Kong, Air France seat sale, Top 5 Credit Card offers

News, Tips & Tricks
American Express is opening yet another Centurion Lounge. This one will be located in Hong Kong (lots of us Canadians do travel there!) and will apparently be a full service Centurion Lounge like those found in the U.S. and less like the several other international Centurion Lounges. This lounge is set to open in the third quarter of this year. If you hold a Centurion or Platinum American Express card you get into Centurion Lounges for free while other Amex cardholders can pay a fee to enter. Now the question we all are asking, when and where will Amex build their first Centurion Lounge in Canada?

Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for February

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of February! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards that have very good acquisition offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the sign up bonus, but when most or all of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when not taking into account insurance packages and other non-reward benefits. In fact all of the cards on this list for February are first year free so you can try them all at no cost, get over $1,000 in rewards and decide later on if the card is right for you. All the while you'll be earning the sign up bonus which can be used to subsidize your travels!  Just ensure you drop any cards you don't like before your 1st year anniversary so you don't pay the annual fee for the second year

No changes this month from January! Note that this is the last month on the first year free offer for the Scotiabank Gold American Express card so if you have been thinking about it you should grab it soon!

So here are our top 5 credit card sign up offers for February (in alphabetical order)

American Express Gold Rewards Card - 25,000 Points (Apply here)
A mainstay offer here on Rewards Canada, the American Express Gold Rewards card has its first year fee of $150 waived and will award you 25,000 Membership Rewards points when you complete $1,500 in spending in the first three months. That 25,000 points is worth a $250 travel credit via Amex's TripFlex feature or can be converted to 25,000 Aeroplan Miles (1 Round trip Economy Award ticket within North America) or 25,000 British Airways Executive Club Avios (as much a 3 one way Economy Award tickets in North America, see this article for details.) Also see our new post on how this sign up bonus can get you a free flight between Toronto and Dublin!!

Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Visa - 30,000 Points  (Apply here)
The best no foreign transaction fee card in Canada makes it to this list due to a very strong acquisition offer. I mean who can complain with 30,000 to 50,000 points awarded on approval all at no cost as the card has the annual fee waived in the first year! They also give you a 15 night credit into the mix which automatically provides you with Marriott Rewards Silver Elite status. Please note there is a 50,000 point offer floating around that is specific for Marriott Elite members and some people are reporting that they getting the points while some others are not. YMMV but no matter what you should get at least 30K.

mbna Best Western Rewards MasterCard (Apply here)
Right now there is an offer for 40,000 Bonus Western Rewards points with this card! With no annual fee to boot! We detail the offer in this post that shows just how much value you can pull out of the card with this 40K bonus!

Scotiabank Gold American Express Card - 20,000 Points  (Apply here)
A very strong card in the earn category for Gas, Grocery and Dining/Entertainment purchases, the current sign up bonus for the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card is 20,000 points when you reach $750 in spending in the first three months. That 20,000 points is equal to a $200 travel credit and since this card is a book anywhere card you can book the travel how you want when you want and when the charge shows up on your account you can redeem the points against the charge. The card normally has a $99 annual fee but of course that is waived in the first year if you apply by January 31, 2017!

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card - 15,000 Miles (Apply here)
Earn 15,000 Bonus Aeroplan Miles and a 100% rebate off your first year annual fee when you apply for and receive the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card. You can earn an additional 5,000 miles if you hold onto the card for a year however you'll then have to pay the annual fee unless you have a TD All Inclusive Banking Plan which means you would get all 20,000 miles at no cost to you!

If you went for all these cards you ultimately could end up with over $1,000 in travel credits and hotel free nights but even if you only take on one or two you are helping your travel budget significantly at no cost other than regular credit card spend

BMO CashBack MasterCards now offer 4% cash back on all purchases in the first 4 months

The sign up offers for BMO's CashBack cards changed yesterday. They have replaced the set dollar sign up bonus with increased earn on your spending in the first four months of having the cards. Both the World Elite and standard versions now offer 4% cash back on all eligible purchases for the first four months.  There are caps to the maximum you can earn, $250 for the World Elite and $125 for the standard card.  This means you'll want to spend at least $6,250 on the WE card or $3,125 on the standard card. If you are just out for the bonus and won't use the card past 4 months and don't need the insurance benefits, go for the standard card as it has no annual fee. If you count the annual fee into the bonus for the WE card you actually only come out with $130 which is only $5 more than the standard card.

Here are the card details:

RBC British Airways Visa cardholders can earn 25% Bonus Avios on hotel stays booked with Kaligo

This bonus offer surprised me a little but hey its a bonus and its good for those who have the card. What is it? Its this Kaligo Hotels booking bonus for those of you who hold the RBC British Airways Visa Infinite card. There aren't many of you, we know that but whatever. If you have the card and need to book a hotel for the next year and a half be sure to check out this Kaligo offer. Kaligo is one of those third party hotel booking sites that offers miles for booking through them. You'll want to shop around to double check pricing but it really offers a decent way to earn miles or point on hotels that aren't part of a major chain program or is from one of those majors you don't frequent enough to worry about the benefits and earning from booking direct with that chain. With this 25% bonus you can see up to 20 Avios per C$1.60 spend with Kaligo, that's pretty good but the 20 Avios will come on the higher priced hotels, lower priced hotels will see a lower earn. You have until January of next year to book for stays until July of 2018!

Offer details:
25% Bonus Avios on all hotel stays booked via Kaligo. Full details and online booking Book by Jan 31, 18 for stays until Jul 31, 18 For Canadian RBC British Airways Visa Infinite cardholders only.

Hilton makes changes to the HHonors program - now spelled Honors, no more award categories, variable points+cash & more

Yesterday news broke that Hilton is making changes to their reward program. First off, the name gets a slight change, they are doing away with the second H in HHonors so the program is now known as Hilton Honors. Not big but definitely makes Auto Correct correct now. The other changes are more profound with award categories going the way of the dodo, fixed points+cash moving to variable points+cash, points pooling and several other changes.

Doing away with award categories
The Hilton Honors award chart we are all used to is going away. Rewards will be priced dynamically based on demand, cash rate for the room and more. Hilton claims that awards for standard rooms won't eclipse the maximum that was in the chart when these changes come into play later this month. Depending on when and what hotel you book you may actually pay less in points for that award night with the new dynamic pricing.

Current Award chart:
You can get an idea of what hotels will cost with this page on the Honors site.

Points and Money Redemptions
Similar to airline point and money redemption rather than other hotel points plus cash options, Hilton Honors will have a slider allowing you to redeem variable amounts of points and cash for a stay. This is really good for those who may not earn enough points with Hilton to redeem for a full night but want to get rid of a few thousand points that may be sitting in your account.

Points Pooling
You'll be able to share/pool points with up to 10 family members or friends. Now is the time to get everyone in your family signed up for E-Rewards surveys so you can redeem for HHonors points and them funnel them into one account!

Use Points at Amazon
You'll be able to use points to shop at Amazon.com. Not sure if it will work for us Canadians yet, presumably it will if that seller or product qualifies for shipping to Canada.

Diamond Status Extension
If you have held Diamond Status for three years and have 250 nights or have accumulated 500,000 points you can request a one-time no questions asked extension to your Diamond Status if you don't requalify.

Hilton Honors - 2,000 Bonus per night for all stays Worldwide until April 30

We gave you a heads up last week on the newest Hilton Honors promotion which has now gone live as of today. A simple 2,000 bonus points per night is a decent promo, for some of you the double points/triple points seen through most of 2016 was better but for those of you staying at the lower priced hotels this 2,000 bonus points per night may end up being more lucrative as it doesn't matter if you are spending $80 or $600 per night you get the same bonus. The bonus also pays out on award night stays as long as you have incidental spending on your folio.

Offer details
2,000 Bonus Honors Points per night on all eligible stays at any Hilton Hotels Worldwide. Full details, online registration and booking (Registration is required) Until Apr 30, 17

Air France KLM Flying Blue Promo Awards - Save 25% on award tickets between Montreal or Toronto & Europe

The newest set of Air France KLM's Promo Awards went live today and for us Canadians this set has two cities they serve in our great country! With promo awards the discount ranges from 25 to 50% off the regular amount of miles required to redeem for these flights. As you can see just by the discount this can be a very good offer if you get 50% off for Business Class! However for us here in Canada we don't get any 50% offers once again but we do get 25% off which can definitely be utilized by some! So while 25% isn't as good as 50% of course, it still is something to look at if you were planning travel in the first two months of the year.

Offer Details:
February Promo Awards - Save 20% to 50% on the Award Miles usually required for an award ticket. Destinations vary by each promotional period. Full Details Book by Feb 28  for travel Apr 1 - May 31, 17

Here are the Canadian offers available for booking this month for travel in April & May:

Don't have all the miles? You could always consider transferring Starpoints earned via the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express to Flying Blue. The card has a 20,000 Starpoint bonus right now which translates to 25,000 Flying Blue miles! More than enough miles for a one way flight in Economy between Vancouver and Europe. You can add in even more miles with the Marriott Rewards Premier Visa card, its 30,000 point sign up bonus translates to 10,000 Starpoints which means another 10,000 Flying Blue miles.
