All routes are 40% off and on top of that you'll earn double Aurora Rewards points. Remember that with Canadian North you can double dip and earn Aeroplan Miles as well as your Aurora Rewards points, although the Aeroplan Miles are not doubled with this promotion.

London Drugs LDExtras - Canada's latest loyalty program

This past October London Drugs, the Western Canadian drug store chain launched their own loyalty program called LDExtras. It seemed to launch without much fanfare outside of their own stores. We were in fact made aware of the program when Canadian Grocer magazine contacted us for an interview about the program! Since that time, my family has joined the program as we shop at London Drugs semi-frequently and if you work the program right the return can be pretty decent.

The program is quite simple, you simply create an account either online, in-store or via the app and utilize your phone number as your account number. There is no plastic card to carry which is nice these days!

The program has no points to collect, rather they track your 'visits' and a visit is anytime you spend $10 or more on eligible products each day at a London Drugs store.

Once you collect enough 'visits' you unlock your Extras, hence the name LDExtras!
The best part out of the extras is the $5 Gift Voucher you earn with every 10 visits. This is where your math skills come in. 10 visits at $10 each means you have to spend $100 to get the $5 voucher. That is a 5% return. That's a pretty decent return and does not include any points or miles you earn on the credit card you use for those purchases. We'd recommend cards that have a drug store multiplier like the American Express Gold Rewards Card, TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card or the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite Card (and a host of others).  If you grab prescriptions at London Drugs then you'll accelerate that earn with the bonus visit when you fill it. Of course if you spend more than $10 each day your return is eroded but chances are you are buying things you need and would have bought anyways at London Drugs so it is nice to get something back no matter the rate of return.

Of course there are other benefits that worth noting like the $5 voucher awarded on your birthday, the extended returns (a la TJX Style) and the photolab discounts. The remainder of the Extras are kind of meh like computer virus checks and camera firmware upgrades.

It is nice to see London Drugs join the loyalty space but we don't know how popular this will be. Years ago when Rexall left Aeroplan we along with some of our readers had hoped that perhaps London Drugs would become an Aeroplan partner but that is obviously not the case now! There are pros and cons of launching your own loyalty program versus joining a coalition program like Aeroplan. Looks like London Drugs has done their due diligence and thought it best to move ahead with their own program with cash back as its primary reward.

What do you think of London Drugs new program? Are you utilizing it already or if not are you going to check it out and join? Let us know!

The WestJet RBC World Elite MasterCard is the co-brand card for the WestJet Rewards frequent flyer program. The card issued by RBC has been around for several years now and has always been a decent travel rewards card option for WestJet travel. It is the ideal card for individuals who travel on WestJet regularly and for couples or families who travel on WestJet at least once per year.

American Express Fixed Points Travel Program is here to stay as a full fledged redemption option

We have covered this American Express feature a few times over the past year or so. At those times it was essentially a pilot program, testing out whether American Express Cardholders enjoyed a fixed redemption chart for flight redemptions. It appears they did as American Express has launched a full blown Fixed Points Travel Program that does not have an expiry date. In fact it is here to stay. It is set to officially launch tomorrow or Friday but existing cardholders got advance notice via email today and here is our coverage of it!

The great news is that nothing else in the Membership Rewards program changes. All the other options are also here. The Use Points for Purchases (formerly known as TripFlex) is still there with a 1:1 redemption option for travel purchases. The addition of the Fixed Points Travel Program is a boon for anyone who holds an American Express card that earns Membership Rewards points as it provides you with an potential option to redeem less points for certain flights than you would need to with the Use Points for Purchases program. Ultimately, with Fixed Points you redeem a set amount of points for a flight within a certain region. Think Aeroplan award chart, Avion & Aventura award charts etc. Within those regions there is a maximum ticket price you can redeem for so to maximize your value you'll want to get a ticket as close to that max ticket price as possible. For example a 15,000 point redemption on popular short haul routes has a maximum ticket price of $300 before taxes and fees. You'll want to try to redeem for a ticket at $300. That provides a 2% return if you earned those points at one point per dollar but the return can actually be pushed to 4% if you only earned Membership Rewards points with the 2 points category bonuses on the American Express Gold Rewards card.

What makes Amex's Fixed Points program different than RBC's or CIBC's is that they also have a business class award chart! RBC and CIBC do not. You can technically redeem RBC and CIBC points for business class tickets at a 100 points to $1 ratio (1 to 1.5% return) where as the Amex chart can provide more value.

Here are the current award charts for the American Express Fixed Points Travel Program

So the question is do you use the Fixed Points program or the Use Points for Purchases program. That all depends on what the ticket cost is! Chances are you may even end up using both on one ticket purchase since the Fixed Points does not cover taxes and fees but Use Points for Purchases does.

For example you find a long haul flight within North America for $375 ($300 base fare and $75 taxes/fees) If you use the Fixed Points Program you need to redeem 40,000 Points plus still cover the $75 with cash or points. So you would look at needing 47,500 points to cover it all. However with Use Points for Purchase you only need 37,500 points to cover the full $375. On the other hand if the flight within North America is $780 ($700 base fare + $80 in taxes and fees) the Use Points for Purchase will require 78,000 points while the Fixed Points program only requires the 40,000 points plus 7,500 for the taxes and fees. So you see where this program can provide some huge value!

Here is an example of where Use Points for Purchase would work better:
29,667 points or 53,168 points. I know which option I would take!
and an option where the Fixed Points works better:
56,586 Points or 83,984 Points?

Now some of you may say that you are better off converting those membership rewards points to Aeroplan and utilizing them that way. And your right... some of the time. What if that YYZ-FAT flight isn't available on Aeroplan at the Classic Flight level? Since Air Canada doesn't fly to Fresno you can't redeem Market Fare so you could be screwed and when we looked at the exact dates as the search above, there was no availability.

As you can see right now you can only redeem for round trip flights however when I spoke to American Express last week about this new option they did say they are exploring one way options for the future. Also you can book right up to the day ahead or even shorter to redeem at any of the above point levels unlike RBC Avion's 14 day advance booking requirement. Remember as well that these are revenue tickets so you will still earn frequent flyer miles/points on these flights as long as they a mile/point eligible fare class.

Some more notes:
  • If you don't have enough points for a Fixed Points redemption you won't be shown that option.
  • Fixed Points is only available via American Express Travel
  • You can still book any travel anywhere else but then you have to use the Use Points for Purchases option if you want to redeem
  • One way flights are being explored but not available at this time
These are the eligible Membership Rewards Enrolled Card Products:
American Express® Card, American Express® Gold Rewards Card, The Platinum Card®, Centurion® Card from American Express, American Express® Business Gold Rewards Card, and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express.

Click here for more details on the Fixed Points Program

What do you think of this redemption option now that is has become a full fledged regular redemption option?

Depending on the offer you have from Dec 1st through to the 8th to bid on them. You can learn more about these Exclusives and bid on them here.

40% Bonus Avios when you convert Diners Club Club Rewards Points to British Airways Executive Club

This offer is for a dying breed of cardholders out there. Since Diners Club is no longer offered to new applicants in Canada this promotion is only really of note to those of us who still hold onto this card. I know that those numbers are down to the five figures now from previous six figures or more. Really too bad but what can you do. If BMO offered up the Diners Club card to the open market it would dilute the value of their own BMO Rewards World Elite MasterCard as the Diners Card is a better card that costs less. Anyways back to the offer!

Until Dec 16th, Diners Club cardholders members can convert their Club Rewards points to British Airways Executive Club and receive a 40% bonus Avios. For us Canadians it normally it costs 1,250 CR points for 1,000 Avios which means with this promo members will receive 1,400 Avios for the 1,250 points. A little over 1 Avios per dollar spent on the card which is OK but when compared to your regular transfer option now is the time to transfer if you want to take advantage of it! I'm only sitting a small balance of around 12,500 points so I could boost my Executive Club account by 14,000 Avios. Not sure if I will yet but will definitely decide before the 16th if I want to.

Complete details on the offer can be found here

WestJet partners with McDonald's to offer McCafe Coffee on their flights

Air Canada has Second Cup. Porter has Starbucks. Now WestJet has McDonald's McCafe. That's right the news that was in our in-box yesterday from WestJet was this new partnership to offer McCafe coffee on board WestJet flights. The first offering was between Toronto and Calgary yesterday and it should be fully rolled out by December 1st on all flights except WestJet Encore flights. Encore will follow sometime in the future.

Facts on the partnership:

  • With more than 140 aircraft, the partnership will serve approximately 30,000 cups of McCafé Premium Roast coffee to WestJet guests, every day.
  • Coffee on board WestJet aircraft is served in a McCafé signature double-walled cup, which will have the same highly popular on-cup rewards collector card and peelable sticker, redeemable upon completion at participating Canadian McDonald's restaurants.
  • The unique cups feature a special McCafé and WestJet design and will be offered for the first time on-board with a lid as a courtesy on request.
  • With McDonald's Canada, WestJet found a Canadian partner that shares a focus on community, including through an existing and strong relationship with Ronald McDonald House Charities® Canada.
  • Both companies are consistently among Canada's Top Employers.
  • McCafé Premium Roast Brewed coffee is made with 100 per cent Arabica beans. (For more information about McCafé's sustainability commitments, please visit here.)
  • Complimentary beverages are available on most WestJet flights and may include water, soft drinks, juice, tea, and McCafé Premium Roast coffee.
Of note in those facts above is this line:
"which will have the same highly popular on-cup rewards collector card and peelable sticker, redeemable upon completion at participating Canadian McDonald's restaurants."

This means that these on board coffees can be used easily to boost your way to that next free coffee at McDonald's. As you may or may not know for every seven McCafe beverages you get one free. So think about it, flying between Calgary and Toronto typically sees two beverage services, if you get coffee both times and fly round trip you have four more stickers to add to your McCafe card. Small potatoes but better than not getting any at all. Now all we need to see is the ability to earn WestJet Rewards on McDonald's purchases!
