Rack up the Rewards: Canadians are loyal to Loyalty Rewards Programs
It seems that every few months we see surveys about the world of loyalty rewards in Canada. Each bank, credit card issuer and even loyalty programs themselves conduct interviews to get a feel of what are on Canadian's minds. One of the latest comes to us from TD and the survey confirms how entrenched Canadian's are with their loyalty programs. 72% of us have credit cards that offer some type of reward, which is great! Canada you're learning. If you are going to pay for something with a credit card why not be rewarded for it! 82% of you make it a priority when looking for a new credit card that it offers some type of reward. Good for you!
The survey results were compiled into an infographic which is featured below and we provided TD with the 5 tips on how to maximize your rewards on credit cards. Being big time Aeroplan mile and other loyalty program point earners, the Rewards Canada family definitely follows each of these steps.
The first, "Check under the hood" is just that, open it up and learn the mechanics of your reward program. Understand how the earning works and then how the redeeming works. The two go together and more often than not consumers only look at one or the other.
Related: Remember people it's all about the EARN and the BURN
The second, "Spring Forward"is making sure you maximize your earning. If you have a card that earns extra miles when buying groceries, use that card for your grocery purchases. At certain times of the year credit card companies may offer limited time bonuses on select purchases so keep an eye out for those. A good example are limited time bonuses offered by ExpediaForTD for any TD Rewards card holders. (First Class, Platinum, Classic)
The third tip, "Brush up on your goals" is for you to realize and make reward program goals. What do you want to do with your miles or points? Don't join a program or get a credit card blindly. While goals may change over time have an idea when you start with a program of where you want to get to. Want to be enthralled by the Lufthansa First Class experience? Check out how many Aeroplan Miles it takes to do so and then start planning on how you can reach that goal. Aeroplan will even help you out with their online goal setter tool (www.goals.aeroplan.com) which helps members set and track their progress.
Reaching that goal is our fourth step "Clear out the Clutter" and with Aeroplan one of the easiest ways to rack up those miles fast other than actual travelling is with credit card spend. Put all you spending on your credit card. It doesn’t matter what the amount is. Put it on the darn card. Then pay the card off so you are not paying interest. Scared that you may forget to pay it and use that cash elsewhere? It only takes a few minutes in the evening to log in to your online banking and make a payment to your card for all the purchases you made that day. There is no rule that you only have to pay the credit card company when your statement comes in. Personally I'm doing three to four payments to my credit cards each week.
The fifth tip is "Find Flexibility" and this plays more in hand with flexible point credit cards. Not stuck on travel but still want the option just in case. Some cards out there let you earn points that can be redeemed for travel like the TD First Class Infinite Visa. The points can be used toward travel redemptions via ExpediaForTD or for any travel purchase paid for with the card but can also be used for merchandise, education grants and more.

Official - American AAdvantage going revenue based on August 1st plus they detail some elite changes coming in 2017
We've known since last November that the American Airlines AAdvantage program was going to move to a revenue based earning system in the second half of 2016. We now know that date will be August 1st. The move places American AAdvantage to the same league as United MileagePlus and Delta SkyMiles who over the past 2 years already went revenue based. American even went so far to copy the exact earn rates for prices paid on tickets as United who in turn had copied Delta with the exact amounts. No creativity here at all nor any with any balls to at least take a chance at being more competitive in the revenue based market. That is being left to the benefits being provided to elite members who in the AAdvantage program will see some more changes coming in 2017 with today's announcement.
We detailed the major changes in the AAdvantage program back in November with the post:
and won't cover all those changes again. We knew at that time about the revenue based earning coming and knew the amounts. So as of August 1st here is how many AAdvantage Miles you'll earn:
- AAdvantage® member – 5 miles for every U.S. dollar
- Gold member – 7 miles for every U.S. dollar (40% bonus)
- Platinum member – 8 miles for every U.S. dollar (60% bonus)
- Executive Platinum member – 11 miles for every U.S. dollar (120% bonus)
How does this translate to less miles on a flight? Let's look at an American Airlines flight between New York and Orlando. We took a random week day flight for the 944 mile flight which priced out at $256.60 before taxes and fees for the roundtrip.
Under the old earning rate, this flight would earn 1,888 base AAdvantage Miles but under the new system of 5 miles per dollar on the base fare it will only earn 1,283 miles. So many members will be losing out on 600 miles on this flight.
As we've seen with United and Delta, this change isn't good for most travellers.
This is even worse for Canadian AAdvantage members as our AAdvantage award flights became more expensive in the changes announced in November and already in place since Canada is no longer part of the U.S. 48 section of the award chart but rather we are now categorized with Alaska. Gone are 25,000 mile round trip flights from Canada to the U.S. as they are now 30,000 for the round trip. So more miles to redeem, less to earn just makes the AAdvantage program less appealing to those of us north of the border. In fact those flying AA may be better offer using Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan or British Airways Executive Club as their program to credit American Airlines flights.
What other changes are coming to the program? These are elite program changes that will kick in on January 1st 2017.
The first is a new mid level elite status called Platinum Pro. Think of this as a match to Air Canada Altitude's Super Elite 75K. Still AAdvantage will only 4 levels compared to AC's 5. Here are all of AA's levels and requirements for qualification:
You'll notice that there also now EQDs or Elite Qualifying Dollars required. So just like Air Canada's Altitude program you can no longer achieve AAdvantage status based on miles or segments only. You now also have to have a spend component and reach one of the other two either the miles or segments requirement. The good thing is that Alaska Airlines flights plus all oneworld flights count towards the EQD requirement. The bad thing is that both United and Delta don't put this EQD requirement on Canadians.
The final two elite changes coming in 2017 have to do with upgrading. Upgrade priority will change to:
"The way your upgrade request is prioritized will change later in 2017. You’ll be listed according to your elite status level followed by the number of EQDs earned in the last 12 months."So the more you spend with AA the better your chances are at being upgraded. The last upgrade change coming is that Executive Platinum members will be able to "use their complimentary 500-mile upgrade benefits on AAdvantage award tickets for travel on American from Main Cabin to the next class."
That's all the changes in a nutshell! What are your thoughts? Are you a regular American Airlines flyer? We'd love to hear from you about the latest AAdvantage changes!

Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for June
Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of June! This is not a 'best' credit card
list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards that have very good acquisition offers. As always when choosing a card
you should always take other factors into account other than the sign
up bonus, but when most or all of these cards are first year free, they
can and
do pay off even when not taking into account insurance packages and
other non-reward benefits. In fact all the cards on this list for June are first year free so you can try many of them out at no cost, get
well over $1,000
in rewards and
decide later on if the card is right for you. All the while earning the
sign up bonus which can be used to subsidize your travels! Just ensure
you drop any cards you don't like before your 1st year anniversary.
This month the new Best Western 60K offer from mbna knocks out the Starwood card from Amex. The rest of the cards remain the same although the offer on the TD Aeroplan card is lower but somewhat alleviated by our exclusive offer on the card and the Amex Gold Rewards now requires $1,500 in spending instead of $500.
So here are our top 5 credit card sign up offers for June (in alphabetical order)
American Express Gold Rewards Card - 25,000 Points (Apply here)
A mainstay offer here on Rewards Canada, the American Express Gold Rewards card has its first year fee of $150 waived and will award you 25,000 Membership Rewards points when you complete $1,500 in spending in the first three months. That 25,000 points is worth a $250 travel credit via Amex's TripFlex feature or can be converted to 25,000 Aeroplan Miles (1 Round trip Economy Award ticket within North America) or 25,000 British Airways Executive Club Avios (as much a 3 one way Economy Award tickets in North America, see this post for details.)
American Express Air Miles Platinum Credit Card - 2,000 Reward Miles (Apply here)
A newcomer to our monthly Top 5 sign up offers, the American Express Air Miles Platinum card comes first year free and comes with a 2,000 Reward Miles sign up bonus when you complete $500 in spending in the first three months. Earn up to 20,000 Bonus Aeroplan Miles and a 100% rebate off your first year annual fee when you apply for and receive the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card. 15,000 Bonus miles awarded on first purchase. PLUS A REWARDS CANADA EXCLUSIVE - For every $1 spent on eligible gas, grocery, drugstore and aircanada.com Purchases with your Card5, earn double Aeroplan Miles for the first 90 days after Account approval – that’s 3 miles instead of 1.5 miles for every $1 spent on eligible Purchases. The 5,000 additional miles for the authorized user come with a $50 cost for that additional card.
If you went for all these cards you ultimately could end up with over $1000 in travel credits and hotel free nights but even if you only take on one or two you are helping your travel budget significantly at no cost other than regular credit card spend
That 2,000 Miles is worth anywhere from $220 to $300 in flight value when you get around to redeeming them.
Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Visa - 30,000 Points (Apply here)
The best no foreign transaction fee card in Canada makes it to this list due to a very strong acquisition offer. I mean who can complain with 30,000 points awarded on approval and a certificate for a free night stay at a Category 1-4 hotel for a potential of 5 free nights, all at no cost as the card has the annual fee waived in the first year! They also give you a 15 night credit into the mix which automatically provides you with Marriott Rewards Silver Elite status.
